Slow download, high ping

Hi
I'm seeing very slow download speeds and very high ping numbers recently. Mostly evenings. This evening is bad. For example 0.12 mbits download and 2012ms ping. Does anyone have any ideas? I had similar a couple of years ago and it was my profile. But profile is at 7 figure on current Bt wholesale speed tests.

Thanks, yes results below:
Download speedachieved during the test was - 0.99 Mbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 0.6 Mbps-7.15 Mbps.

• Very Slow Internet + High Ping

I am on a Sager laptop running Windows 7 and using an Airport Extreme Base Station as my router. I don't know how the router is set up or even how to access the router from my computer. My roommate set up the internet before I moved in. I have already contacted my internet provider and they believe my slow service + extremely high pings when I try to play any online game are a result of my router.
I am just looking for a way to correct my issue. I would also like to know how I can even access my router from my computer. Thanks.

+Is there any way for the owner of the device to limit the amount of bandwidth I am receiving??+
No.
+but I really don't understand why my internet is so crummy.+
Interference from other wireless networks or cordless phones is usually the cause of issues like this. If you have a cordless phone there, turn it off for an hour or so to see if things improve. Unfortunately, there's not much you can do about a neighbor's cordless phone causing problems or another wireless network.
+If I could access the utility what would you suggest I check?+
You can access AirPort Utility by going to the Downloads link on the main forum page. But, you won't be able to access any of the settings on the AirPort Extreme unless you have the device password, which is different than the wireless password. The first thing to do is try different channel settings for the wireless to see if you can find some clear airspace.

• Slow Speeds/High Ping During Evening

Just signed up for Comcast this week.  Noticed bad lag while gaming and speed tests indicate slow download speeds (<10 Mbps when I should be getting 75 Mbps) and high ping (200-300ms).  Checked everything hardware related on my end and couldn't find an issue.  Finally, did some trace routing and discovered high ping on Comcast servers in San Jose and Great Oaks.  See tracert results below. These issues seem to occur during the evenings (8pm to midnight PST), but the few checks I did during the day seemed fine.  It may be related to streaming volume at night.  In any event, it's ruining my internet experience.  How can this be resolved? Tracing route to e10905.dspb.akamaiedge.net [23.211.8.171]

The same thing is happening for me. I live in Houston, Texas and my ping to a game called LoL was around 80 now its at 90. It's not a huge difference and I don't notice anything when gaming. I'm just curious as to why this has happened?

• Slow Speeds + High Ping!

Hello BT community.
I've had a problem the last couple of days what's completely stumped me, and by the looks of it stumped 'technical support' (which let's be honest isn't that hard anyway).
What's happening is, quite simply my speed is about 0.50mb/s when It should be about 1.5-2.0mb/s.
And our ping is well around 300-1200.
When I reset the router the connection is fine for about 10 minutes of browsing or pretty much as soon as I go to play an online game - at which time the speed shoots down and the ping flies up, until reset at which time it just does this again.
I've tried all manner of fixes, I've changed router, phoned up technical support to which availed to a line check, and apprently nothing(?) is wrong.
I would upload some screenshots but I'm not lying when I physically can't. The speed is that low, it simply times out whenever it starts uploading to Tinypic/Imageshack.
HELP ME!

The line test was silent, no interferrance at all.
I have attached my ADSL stats as well as a ping test I've been running.
Speedtest results:
Download speedachieved during the test was - 1.01 Mbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 0.4 Mbps-2 Mbps.
     Additional Information:
     Your DSL Connection Rate :1.7 Mbps(DOWN-STREAM), 0.45 Mbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 1.25 Mbps
The speed seems fine, however the ping as you can see below makes the service unusable.

• High Packet Loss, High Ping and Slow Connection Ov...

Hi There,
I have been a customer with the BT unlimited broadband package for a little under two years and up until recently have had no real issues with the service. This was until around 3/4 weeks ago I noticed that the internet was very slow and certain online games or applications like Netflix would lose all of its quality or stop completely. At first I thought nothing of it and simply reset my BT Home hub router, and sure enough everything was back to normal. However after around 2-3 hours of moderate use (gaming online or watching Netflix) the problem surfaced again.
Now I am lucky if I can get the entire way through a 40 minute TV episode before the quality drops and/or the service requires buffering. I have already contacted BT via the helpline and the service lady ran through the obligatory steps (turn off, wait 5 minutes, reset the home hub etc.) but she failed to understand that although rebooting the home hub does alleviate the problem initially, the symptoms of a slow connection, high packet loss and high ping always return within an hour.
Four the last couple of weeks I have been trying to investigate the problem myself and I have done the following things:
Tested the line using the master socket (no difference)
Opened the ports on my firewall within the home hub (no difference)
Directly wired in the computer instead of relying on the wifi (no difference)
Tested for interference from neighbours wifi using inSSIDider office (it wasn’t, operating on different channels)
Switched every device that requires internet off apart from the PC (no difference)
So with all that in mind I am fairly confident that it is nothing within my house that has caused a significant reduction in internet quality.
Now I have tried my best to display the problem I am having by recording the connection quality for the last 24 hours. The table below represents the condition and quality of the connection after leaving it a period of time without resetting:

I have also checked if the bell wire was attached and it is not. My socket is of the new type with the inclusion of an inductor on the faceplate. My ADSL filters and modem cable already have the middle connecting pins removed so I don’t think it is a wiring problem, at least in my apartment anyway. I have also searched for problems with the exchange and they are showing green for my area. (Liverpool Central)
I have just rang the quiet line and I do not appear to have any noise on the line. However, all I have is a cordless phone and I know that is not ideal for determining noise due to the radio frequency interfering with the phone speaker.
Again thank you for you time on this issue.
Regards,
Richard

• What causes ipad/iphones wireless slow download and high upload?

Does anyone know what causes ipad/iphones wireless to have slow download and high upload? Tried using linksys e3000 and linksys ea6500 and ipads/iphones get approximatly 1Mbps Down and about 5Mbps Up. Macbook pro gets 46Mbps down and 5Mbps Up and is consistent. Does anyone have any wireless settings such as channel width and frequency that works best?

I have no idea, but i would not buy another apple device as of now.  I have 2 iphones (3GS, 4) and an iPad 2 on my home wifi.  They usually get between 1-5mb speeds on wifi (i have a 50mb connection).  I tested my laptop, 50+mb, my android phone 25mb+, yet every apple device on its best moment gets 5...usually 3 or lower.
I've tried everything...Different channels, WMM/QOS on/off, Wireless N only, Wireless G/N, i have a wireless N Verizon Fios router, i've shut wireless off on that and hooked up a D-link 655...tried everything, and still the sucky speeds.  It's set to WPA2/AES.  I can not even watch an HD youtube video without it pausing every few seconds.
Apple is no help, Verizon is no help...i'm completely out of ideas.

• High Pings, slow performance. Good line stats. P...

Hi
I am suffering from very high ping times and variable download speeds.  I normally get about 15ms ping and 12-15Mb download.  I am currently getting 200-500ms ping times and 1Mb-6Mb download and significant packet loss.  Ping test gives me a server in holland as fastest server!
My line stats look fine - problem doesn't seem to be the local loop.
I swapped the ECI modem for a Hauwei from eBay in case that was causing an issue (and so I could access the stats) but it didn't improve things.  Any clue?  Do you know how to get to someone in BT  that I can have a sensible conversation with?  I am preparing myself for the usual long drawn out fight with the helpdesk and hours on the phone.

• BT Infinity High Pings (eh .. I mean really High)

Greetings, Are BT Infinity witch is in the Lisburn Area is getting really high pings, slowing down the speed of are Broadband . I'd like to know whats going on right now? How is this even happening :s

Ignore it, is everything working as it should? Gaming, You tube(you said u Tube, must read posts more thoroughly), surfing, downloading?
If yes then, enjoy.
If no, then reboot the openreach modem (power off) & do the same with your router for 5 mins, power on the modem ist, wait for the dsl light, power on the router (god forbid you're using a homehub.....half Jk ) & test again.
Peace.

• Very slow upload, high packet discards - Pittsburgh

I´ve had Verizon DSL in a Pittsburgh suburb for about 8 years without problems until a few days ago.
My plan is 3 Mbps down/768Kbps up and my modem is a Westell 2200. I used to measure
speed consistently at about 2.8 Mbps down and 700 Kbps up. Sites used to load within seconds.
The first symptom of my current trouble is that I am unable to send email with a 300 KB attachment
via Yahoo. Some sites take forever to load. Speed measurements on dslreports and speedtest.net now usually give the expected download speed but sometimes give extremely high ping times and upload speed measurements always HANG / never finish or get aborted.
I called Verizon support and they suggested connecting the computer directly to the modem
with an Ethernet cable. I did that but it doesn´t help.
Modem statistics show the expected speeds with SNR ratio 20 dB down and 12 dB up. Ethernet and WAN packet errors and discards are none EXCEPT the WAN interface has a very large number of OUT PACKET DISCARDS (more than half of out packets sent).
High WAN out packet discards explain slow upload speeds, but what could be the cause?
It seems that the WAN line is OK given the SNR ratios, no errors or discards in and no errors out.
The problems is specifically high WAN out discards.
How can I get Verizon to verify the port and congestion on their side? That would seem a likely
cause, right?
Solved!
Go to Solution.

Step one: Visit http://www.giganews.com/line_info.html and post up the Traceroute the page shows, if you wish. Be aware that the final hop (bottom-most line of the trace)  might contain a hop with your IP address in it. Remove that line. What I'm looking for is a line that mentions "ERX" in it's name towards the end. If for some reason the trace does not complete (two lines full of Stars), keep the trace route intact.
Step two: Can you provide the Transceiver Statistics from your modem?
Which means..
Visit http://192.168.1.1/ for me and do the following:
a) If you see a Blue and White Westell page, mouse over Troubleshooting, go to DSL, and choose Transceiver Statistics. Copy and paste the information on that page.
b) If using the Red and Black Firmware: Go to System Monitoring > Advanced Monitors > Transceiver Statistics. Copy and paste the information on that page.
c) Try visiting http://192.168.1.1/transtat.htm which is a direct link to the Stats on older modems.
d) If you need a Username and Password, try the following:
admin/password
admin/password1
admin/admin
admin/admin1
admin/Serial Number.
By Serial Number, I don't mean type in the words Serial Number. I mean find and type in the serial number found on the bottom of this router.

• BT Infinity 2 and high ping rate

I am having a problem with my BT Infinity2.  I am getting high ping rates some as high as 181 ms.  I have download speeds of 15 meg and 8-9 meg upload.  This is through the router wired to my computer.  I was told that I should be able to get somewhere in the region of 77 meg.  This is nowhere near and needs to be sorted out.
It doesn't matter what time of day I do the speed test it is always the same.  If I try and play my Football Manager 2012 game online I can't as my connection just kicks me back off the steam server.  If I try and watch a programme on Iplayer or ITV player ther programmes are fuzzy, blocking and unwatchable, also with the buffering is beyond a joke.

micksea173 not good and you have my sympathy
Try rebooting both the hub and the modem. Run the BT Speedtester to get your IP Profiles and  http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/ to get an accurate speed test. Pings are very dependant on the site you are measuring a ping of 181 for a server in LA could be quite good! If you know how also run a tracert to bbc.co.uk. Post agin with the results and somebody can make an educated guess as to where the problem lies.

• Having really high pings, packet loss and been on ...

Hi. I've been on to BT 4-5 times in the last few weeks. Everytime its the same thing I do all their checks and run the speed test. Its the same thing over and over. When i try to explain to them the problems i,m having they said your speed is within the acceptable range. I,m at a loss with dealing with BT. The customer server is terrible.
Basically the problems i,m having is really high pings. Even doing the BTwholesale speedtest my pings was usally in the 30ms range now they are 70 on average now. I play alot of online games. And Everything is unplayable. I know there is definitely something wrong. Either with the routing or some of the nodes on bt.
Today I was trying to play Diablo 3, the lag spikes was huge every 2-3 seconds jumping to 1-2k ms latency. I ran some winMTR tests and i,m having alot of packet loss. I tried to explain that to BT on the phone. But its like the dont have a clue what i,m talking about or wont attempt to help me with the issue. All game companies usally tell me ISPs are always willing to help with these problems. But BT seem to refuse to help with latency ping issues, just your speed is fine etc .
I,ve also noticed people in the BT forums saying something about G.INP and people needing HH5 Type B. Can someone explain to me what this is or if its something happening to my cabinate. I,m using the BT HH5 type A. From what i see the about the G.INP sounds like the issues i,m currently facing.
Can some Mod please help me. I,m really losing hope with BT.

Hi Guys.
Still facing these issues. Is BT not going to do anything about it? Here is a WinMTR test to a game server i,m playing.

217.41.216.109 seems to be an issue with this. Getting packet loss of 7% and the the ping shoots up to almost 400 while the average is around 30.
I,ve tried everything BT have told me, i've phoned loads and loads of times to seek help. I dont know what else to do. Pings and latency is horrible. And i dont just mean little lag. Every online game is unplayable. Webpage loading slowing or broken images .

• Painfully slow download rate - 0.13 Mbps

Hello all, I've experienced a very slow download rate of late, 0.13Mbps. In the summer my connect was fine, around 5/6 Mbps and gradually the speed is grinding to a standstill. Most pages don't load these days and those that do, usually drop over time.
The BTW speed test results are as follows:
Download speed (Mbps): 0.13
Upload Speed (Mbps): 0.33
Ping Latency (ms): 61.25
The further diagnostics are as follows:
Download speed achieved during the test was - 0.13 Mbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 0.05 Mbps-0.25 Mbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :5.41 Mbps(DOWN-STREAM), 0.45 Mbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 0.14 Mbps
I have done the quiet line test, 17070, and there is no noise.
Help would be gratefully received.

welcome to the BT community forum where customers help customers and only BT employees are the forum mods
in order for the forum members to help please can you post the adsl stats from your router you may need to 'show detail' to get all stats (if hub enter 192.168.1.254 in your browser and navigate to adsl or if HH4/5 then go to troubleshooting then logs and you are looking for 2 line together when hub last connected to internet and they will show your connection speed and noise margin or if netgear enter 192.168.0.1).
The problem is althought you have. 5mb connection speed your profle is rock bottom at 0.14mb probably due to your router dropping connection or manual resets trying to get speed back or a combination of both. Your profile will return to normal automatically provided you can maintain connection 24/7 for 3/5 days with not resets
are you connected directly via a filter to the NTE5 master or test socket or to somewhere else? Is the master the only phone socket in your home?
Someone may then be able to offer help/assistance/suggestions to your problem

• Slow downloading of video

I sometimes have problems with slow downloading of video. I have DSL, and the speed and quality usually chek out on speed testing. If I am watching a Youtube video it is annoying to have it go to buffering. I think someone wrote a song about that.
glaber

You tube and trailers are not only different qualities (hence datarates) as you are aware but they also come from different sources which helps explain why you have trouble with one but not the other.
One thing to note is that when the blue line has fully extended across the screen representing loading, it is not the whole of the file that has loaded, not sure how much, it might be something like 30 seconds worth, once it's played that 30(?) seconds worth the tv expects to have downloaded more of the file and hence to be able to play interrupted. This explains why it stutters even though you thought it had downloaded everything, this is important since it rules a problem with the tv itself.
Do you have any issues streaming video to the tv from itunes, this might indicate an issue within your network, a full strength signal does not mean that you can't be experiencing interference. Your own videos on itunes are likely (but not necessarily) higher quality than the trailers and if you don't have an issue streaming them, then the problem could well lie with your internet connection.
If the problem is on the internet and if as you say you can start to watch trailers immediately on your laptop it would appear it's not your internet connection speed that's a problem although you don't say what speed it is, however there are other things on the internet side of things such as proxy servers etc that could cause a problem.
With all that in mind you need to try to narrow down were the problem might be before taking a more specific look at any particular area.

• Extremely high pings

Hello, I'm new in Sky, I changed from my previous provided because for the last month or so I've been experiecing high pings while playing and slow browser navigation during peak hours. I just find out that probably this wasn't because the provider... so I probably made the wrong decission. The problem I've now is that I have even higher pings. To be honest, I've been just 1 day using Sky but since it's the same problem that I was previously having with my previous provider I assume it won't be magically fixed. The ping, in ms, is not as much as with my previous provider (before it went up to 700) but last longer, while before it was 5 seconds every 30, now seems to be 1 minute every 2, longer periods and more constant but pings of about 350-400 Below are some details in case this is not due to congestion (hopefully is not)  and you could have other ideas (by the way, it happens with ethernet cable and wifi, the channel I have is also the most uncommon in the area) Broadband LinkDownstreamUpstreamConnection Speed20238 kbps1295 kbpsLine Attenuation22.0 dB14.0 dBNoise Margin6.1 dB9.9 dB Thank you, will keep informed on how this goes tomorrow

That's true the ping with the router was too high and that I did the test with wifi but I've the same problem with the cable, and also a few things to consider 1. The problem is only happening on peak hours (even if is with Wifi, it should then be the whole day)2. The router is new, received it last week3. The laptop was 1 meter from the router at the time of testing Considering all the above, I should still have a decent ping, as I do in the morning as I've always had with other providers.
Tracert right now, with Wifi, exact same setting and distance from router.  Will do another one tomorrow with the ethernet cable at peak time and send it over  C:\Users\ProvoS>tracert bbc.co.uk

• Extremely high ping times only fixed via restart

I have 2 BR350 in bridge to a remote tower that has an AP350 providing access to customers. The customers will call in with complaints of very slow access. I have been onsite to see that a user can login to the AP350(web) fine but the BR350 at the tower is slow and the BR350 at the far tower is for most purposes dead. The link still shows up around 65% to 75% signal strength. By restarting either BR350 the link will come back fine. I have been using Ping Plotter to keep track of the ping times and see that the response times sometime slow grow or instantly grow to around 2000ms to 4000ms. Ping times from the customer to the AP350 on the tower remain below 10ms during all of this.
I have had a similar problem with an AP350 in another city thats ping time do the same thing and require a reboot. It's ping time from the client side can range form 4ms to 800ms on regular usage as well. This customer has an average of 80% signal strength from the Workgroup Bridge.
How can I find out what is causing that strange high ping time on these situations.
All units running firmware 12.00
Thanks for the help.

Normally ,the first thing to do is to check the software version used. Here,in your case you are using the latest software release(12.00T). So now the problem can be isolated to other issues. Bridge software provides tools to show you the types of problems and where the bridge is encountering the problems. Two of the most helpful tools are the Throughput statistics and the Error statistics screen. You can get the procedure for collecting the error statistics using the following URLs:
http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/102/wlan/br-ts-22950.shtml#conn
