Slow Download on new iMac Fast on old Ti Book

I have three computers on a AEBS, iMac 2.4 802.11N, MacBook 2.2 802.11N and an old Ti Book 400 with a Belkin USB wireless modem 802.11G. While trying to download the OSX 10.5.2 combo 343 megs the other day, I noticed that it was going to take 14 hours on my IMac 802.11N and when I checked out the TI book using Speed download, it was going to take 1 hour 20 mins for 340 meg file. The upgrade was downloading at 85 kbps on the Ti Book and 6 kbps on the iMac 802.11N I downloaded it on the Ti Book and indeed it took just less than two hours. I tried downloading the 10.5.2 on the iMac twice and it would get to 289 megs both times and quit after an all night run.
Must be set up wrong or the Belkin USB wireless device is a super piece of equipment. Any one seen this problem?

Thanks for all the help I have received from everyone out there in cyberlandia, like it was alot.
I solved my problem on my own and what a feeling. I tweaked the IPv4 settings by ending the numbers in an even number instead of an odd number (.172, .174 ,.176 etc). Sort of stumbled onto this but it worked as my download speeds were 6kbps when I started and went up to 750 kbps shortly afterwards. I am in South America and our internet connections are slow compared to the States. Wish I could get a 5 meg download speed but that is not going to happen. 750kbps (@ $90 per month) is a joy compared to the dial up I had.

  • Slow wireless downloads on new iMac

I just picked up the new iMac and downloads are EXTREMELY slow and the router is only 10 feet away from the Mac.  Any ideas what could be wrong?

I run into the same problem when I got my new i7 imac in December 2012.
It run 10 times slower via wireless on speedtest.net vs my 3 years old macbook pro.
I soon as I plug in the network cable it runs super fast, but wireless is just beyond terrible.
I did test new iMac vs my old Macbook Pro parallerly many times, same network, same time of the day. I did reset the router, modem, wireless card, you name it,
I called apple and they first tried to repair my brand new computer?!!? They did the speed tests via phone and couldn't figure out the issue.
After an hour or so on the phone, and being transfered from one person to another they finally agreed to ship me a replacement iMac.
So now I waited 1 month for my custom ordered replacement iMac.
Now check this out....The new one just arrived today and it has the same issue?!?!
I think we need Steve back to get this straightened out. Someone help please.

You shouldn't disable Spotlight completely; Apple's App Store relies on it to keep track of updates to software you've downloaded and permit you to update them when they're available. Instead, in Spotlight preferences, uncheck everything in "Search Results." Spotlight will still run for OS and App Store purposes but won't be useful for your search needs any longer. Instead, check out EasyFind in the App Store. It's fast, flexible, and will search external drives Spotlight hasn't indexed.

  • New imac faster at handling RAW than my MacPro

I had a play around with a new iMac yesterday and tried Aperture with some Apple installed RAW (Nikon) imaged files. I was surprised to find Aperture snappier and Using the loupe is noticeably faster on the iMac.
Why is the new iMac faster when handling/manipulating RAW files in Aperture?
Some are saying (in the MacPro forum) the ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT video card is actually a little slower than my stock Nvidia 7300GT so it can't be video performance.
So what could be the issue?

A properly configured MP is far superior to any iMac for Aperture performance. As to why the described MP is slow:
The stock 7300GT card is very limiting to Aperture on a MP and should be replaced with an 8800GT when retrofit cards are available.
3 GB RAM on a MP is limiting. RAM is inexpensive now, so IMO MPs should have more RAM, adding two 2-GB sized DIMMs as a minimum add. For heavy apps like Adobe CS or Aperture I recommend adding 8 GB RAM, always minimum 2-GB sized DIMMs to avoid wasting limited slots. IMO RAM is the cheapest performance enhancer and most of us handling heavy graphics will want even more RAM, all slots, over the life of a new MP.
I would recommend buying 4-GB sized DIMMs except that they currently cost much more per GB.
Of course there are also lots of non-hardware issues that also affect performance. Steve Weller, builder of the excellent <http://www.bagelturf.com/index.html> Aperture website, discusses speed improvements here:
    <http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1273934&tstart=75>
Immediately prior to and immediately after every installation of any kind (essentially anything that asks for sysadmin password) I recommend repairing Permissions. Note that repairing Permissions at other times does not have the same effect as immediately prior to and immediately after installations. Repairing Permissions is routine maintenance, not a magic fix.
On the Photoshop forums for years there have been many instances of some folks getting poor or unstable performance out of setups that other folks get good performance out of. We see the same thing here on the Aperture forums. The suggested protocol of repairing Permissions before/after installs is one of the routines that many of us with long term good Adobe performance have tended to follow.
There are many tens of thousands of files with Permissions settings. IMO maintaining them in a consistent state immediately before and after each installation of any kind is a potentially useful protocol with no down side risk.
System and application setup and maintenance apparently become particularly important on boxes used for heavy graphics. All apps and the OS should be in synch, version wise. Hard drives should not be allowed to become too full. Many folks run Cocktail routinely; I just let OS X do its own routine maintenance. Read the forums like MacFixit to be aware of know apps conflicts.

But old product key entered is not recognised.
    How to solve problem?

There is nothing to resolve. Serial numbers are platform specific, but platform swaps only apply to current versions, meaning CS&. Your CS4 is not eligible for an upgrade, so your only option is to buy a new CS6 license or sign up for Creative Cloud.

I have icloud and downloaded new CDs on my 2nd computer.  How do I download the new music into my old computers iTunes using icloud.

For your computer first get iTunes to see it by:
iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows
    or
iPhone, iPad, iPod touch: Device not recognized in iTunes for Mac OS X
    - The transfer iTunes purchases
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer
    - Or redownload them by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
    - Transfer other music by using a third-party program like one of those discussed here:
    newer copy
    - Connect the iPod to your compute and make a backup by right clicking on the iPod under Devices in iTunes and select Back Up
    - Restore the iPod from that backup
Note that the backup that iTunes makes does not included synced media like apps and music.

This is an international community.  Prices vary from country, state, city, etc.
You should call the repair shop of your choice and ask for an estimate.  Make sure the estimate includes taxes, labor costs, etc.
Remember, no one can give you an exact figure until the repair techs physically examine & run diagnostics on your computer to confirm what is wrong w/it.

  • Brand new iMac- Appleworks from 'old' mac

Hello! I just bought a brand new Intel iMac. (love it) I just dragged the Appleworks application folder across to the 'new' iMac from my old G-4.
It seems to be working beautifully on my new iMac. It just seemed TOO EASY. Is there something I'm missing? I didn't expect it to work.
    Anyone have experience with this?
    Thanks, Daniel

  • HP Photosmart Studio running SLOW on my new iMac w/Leopard

We just became Mac users with our new iMac less than a month ago. We got the HP 4400 all in one with the computer as well. I unloaded pics from my camera's card today and used the editing software for the first time....it was incredibly slow. Is there a reason for that? Is it like a PC....could I be running other programs that I'm not aware of that could have been slowing it down? It actually "locked up" at one point which was extremely frustrating to me with a new computer. I used the unloading and editing software with my old PC and old HP printer with no problems, so I was very surprised when the "new stuff" was sub par today.
Anyone out there that can suggest something or help me out?

I also am a new Mac user and have purchased a C7280 printer with all the accompanying software. I have experienced exactly the same problem and looking at the Activity Monitor the PhotosmartStudio application is making a large number of Unix calls. I have already uninstalled and re-installed the Software and this has made no difference. The silly part of this whole saga is that I would much prefer to download direct into iPhoto, but I am not sure how to separate the applications and discontinue using Photosmart. I think it might be simpler to purchase another printer!

  • Slow download on network with fast upload.

I just recently purchased a 24" iMac and I'm having networking issues. I connect to my PC server and see all the files just fine. The problem is, when I try and copy anything off of the server or read files off the server in programs like InDesign CS4, the network slows down completely. When I take a 500mb file and upload it to the same server, it uploads it at the normal gigabit speeds. Taking that same 500mb file and try and copy it back off, it takes hours.
I also have a Mac based ftp server running Rumpus. If I connect to the ftp mac directly and download a file, it's very slow, but if I use Cyberduck or the web-based downloader, it downloads at Gigabit speeds.
It seems anything I try and copy directly off the servers, or work on files that reside on the server it is very, very slow. I have an older Intel iMac 20" right next to the new one and it still reads the network just fine. Copies and uploads very fast to the same server. I set up the custom IP address, DNS servers, etc. the same on both machines and this new iMac is not working well on the network.
A couple of years ago I purchased another Intel iMac 20" that had similar problems on the network. After weeks of the Apple Store checking it out, they told me that the network controller chip went bad. Could this possibly happen again on another iMac?
I could really use some help on this. If I need to take this new iMac to the Apple Store to get checked out I will, but if it might be just a setting somewhere I'm missing, I'd rather deal with that.
    Thanks

  • Slow performance, brand new iMac!

    Hello!
First, excuse my rusty English.. I hope you manage to read it
Main problem.. Adobe, PhaseOne and other intensive applications is veeeery slow on a high specced brand new iMac! Lightroom 5, PS CC and Capture One Pro 7 is what I use mostly.
I just got my brand new iMac 2014.2 (3.5/3.9 GHz, 32 GB RAM, 512GB flash disk and GTX780M), and its quite a lot slower than my other Win7 workstation. Other workstation specs: i7 4.2 GHz, 16GB RAM, 128GB SSD, GTX 580. I'm working on the same Raid-5 drive (USB-3) too, so I don't know why it's slower..
    What I experience:
Changing from "current" raw to next raw (while culling) takes several seconds, and my Raid-5 is done chewing long before I see the result on my monitor. I get the spinning beach ball while waiting for preview. I always render 1:1 on import and 1:1+standard size in menu, just to be sure. Adjustment brush is like dodging in PS v1.0 (NOT CS) when computers had less disk-space than we have cpu-cache today, awfully slow, and it "stutters". Moving/panning in 1:1 is very choppy, and sometimes I get the spinning beach ball while panning.. This happens in LR and CO.. Photoshop CC stutters or have to "think" when I try panning. These problems happens in 6 Mpix, 12 Mpix or 25 Mpix RAW files, and actually in some JPEGs too!
    I have done following:
I've tried 2003 and 2010 processing in LR, small change. Fixed permissions in OS X. Removed preferences for LR, CO and PS CC. Reinstalled LR/cloud apps and Capture One Pro 7. Increased camera raw cache from 15 to 50 GB. Followed Adobe's guide to make LR faster. Followed Capture One guides. Reinstalled (clean install) of OS X. I've tried all tips I could find in the forums around.. I have also tried placing RAW files on internal 512 GB disk to see if that helps on performance, but no change. Same story with camera raw cache, doesn't matter where it is.
Additional things.. I’ve also diagnosed the iMac with checkdisk, memcheck, logs, etc.. No problems as far as I can see.
I just changed my workflow from Win to OS X and I depend on this to work.. I currently have 4000 files from my last job waiting to be worked on, and I'm not finished until Christmas in this tempo :-(
If I can't get this working very soon, then I have to return this very expensive iMac and buy a new PC again..
