Slow download performance

Hi
Have previously posted this under the podcast discussion forum but decided to post it here as well as this one is more active.
I've just changed ISP (due to house move) and itunes radio, podcasts and music store are either very slow or do not work at all. Previously I was using a 2Mbps service from my local cable company but as they do not offer broadband at my new address I've opted for Tiscali.co.uk. They can only deliver 512kbps ADSL until my local exchange is upgraded. When I moved ISP I also had to change my router.
Prior to the change of ISP itunes worked fine, no problems with anything. Now I find I can't download podcasts quickly and if I try to listen to any streamed music all I get is a "rebuffering" message displayed. Surfing etc (even at 512kbps) is fine and speed tests that I run suggest that I'm getting 476kbps. Streaming using Realplayer seems to be ok as does Window Media Player.
The problems have only started since I moved ISP and changed router. The router is a Netgear DG834PN. I don't believe the problem is caused by only having 512kbps (Realplayer and Windows Media Player work ok)
Any ideas why itunes is performing so badly?
Thanks
Mark

Download the new itunes 6.4, that should help! !)
Hi
Thanks for the suggestion, I'm already running the latest version of itunes.
Cheers

  • Slow download performance with windows 7 on Cisco 2960S

has someone experience with the the windows 7 on Cisco 2960S.
One customer had the issue with very slow download rate ( 500kByte) with 100MB / full duplex and  default tcp paramenter under win 7 with IOS 12.2.55SE1.
    No error was seen.
The change of follwing in windows improve the performance a litte bit to 1-2 MByte.
no compression, no tcp windowing, no received side scaling, no windows side heuristic, no checksum offloading and a smaller MTU size than default.
After update the Switch to 12.2.55.SE2 the performance imporve to 4-12 MByte.
Has someone an idea about the chances in IOS 12.2.55SE2. I cant find anything in RN about this issue.
    Best regards
    Steffen

I have the same issues in WS-C2960G-48TC-L  . my downloads dropped in my lan from 2 mb/s to 100kb/s in all operating systems including linux workstations . my ios version is 12.2(44)SE5 in 2960 switches .
i have 2 x 4503-E L3 and 14 2960-48TC-L switches but i can not access the new ios versions to test if the issue is coming from ios version because of end of support .
can someone ensure that the new ios remove this issue ?

  • My Take on the Reception and Slow Download Speed Issue

I seriously believe that the reception problems are a result of something that AT&T has done... Here's why. I started having issues with reception variation and very slow download performance BEFORE the release of iPhone 4 or iOS4. I went to AT&T and got a new SIM. No improvement. I complained at the Apple Store about the variable reception, and the fact that when downloading, the phone got extremely hot to the touch. Because I have been a good Apple customer, the Genius replaced the phone. No improvement. I only upgraded to iOS4 after getting the refurbed "new" phone-- the new OS hasn't really done anything for me other than shorten my battery life..... I am getting pretty tired of sitting in one physical spot, and watching my signal strength go from 5-bars 3G to 1-bar EDGE to "no service" in the span of a few minutes.... Somebody had better do something about this issue, or it's back to Sprint with the new HTC Evo 4G..... Never had reception issues with them!!

It could be a bit of a design flaw but it could also be affected by iOS4.. any phone with an ariel when hold against skin makes the signal drop period! The only reason its more news worthy is because its actully part of the case.
It certainly does need fixing but a software update could help improve it for both iphone 4 and 3G/3GS. Ive heard the older models have been suffering this too.
The reception issue didnt really bother me that much I hold it naturally in my right hand and I dont get a signal issue mainly because I noticed my finger doesnt make contact with the space between the two antennas but then if I apply a finger over the space seprating the antennas the signal does indeed drop its like the two seperated antennas cancel eachother out.
But I know having to buy a case is a bit stupid when it should work without it but for a phone that cost 500-600 why the **** wouldnt you want to protect it?
Personally I love the phone the camera is awesome especially the quality of the front facing camera it looks amazing as good as the 3 mega pixel camera on the 3GS.
The best thing though is definatly the retina display, it looks beautiful. The main thing I liked about the screen tho wasnt the shapeness and quality but the fact that I found it hard to tell the difference between the black colour of the case and the blackness of the screen especially when watching a video with the black bars on the sides of the video, the contrast ratio alone is pretty epic.

  • Anyone else notice poor WiFi performance on iPhone 4 after IOS5 update? I have two iPhone 4 at home, slow slow downloads. One of them I've tested WiFi at work, Same issue. e.g. Apps take forever to download over WiFi compared to a AT

I have two iPhone 4 at home, slow slow downloads. One of them I've tested WiFi at work, Same issue. e.g. Apps take forever to download over WiFi compared to a AT&T-3G connection.

I have only just got an iphone 4 which I immediately updated to ios7 so have nothing to compare it with. But it doesn't even see networks that come up clear on the macbook. Same thing for a colleague in the same spot. previously I had an android phone which picked up just fine.

  • Sigh slow download speeds iPad

Is anyone having problems with slower download speeds on iPads and if so  any suggestions to fix? Also some videos on my laptop, ex: like twitter mobile uploads I'm trying to view, are slow. Come to think of it, some youtube things slow to download on laptop, too, so not the sites' faults..  Is it Verizon's?  Why is the download speed erratic to non-exisitent on certain videos with Fios?

The first thing that needs to be checked first is the FiOS connection. Go to http://measurementlab.net/measurement-lab-tools#tool1 and perform a speed test using a computer connected via Ethernet and see if the results match what you should be getting on your connection. Additionally on the iPad, visit testmy.net and perform their download speed test. If you have any additional PCs in the home that can use Wireless, perform a speed test over Wireless using the Measurement Lab address.

  • Extremely slow download from Itunes store when on NAS

    Hi All,
Since the latest Itunes update 10.6 I've been experiencing extremely slow download from the store. Set up is as follows (with all the latest firmware and software upgrades done on everything)
ITunes DB and XML locally stored on HDD
Itunes Media Folder stored on NAS DNS-323
DNS 323 NAS hardwired to network by 1000 Gb LAN Connection
         Cabled Internet connection at 60Mbps
There is no issue running Itunes from the NAS to MAC / APPLETV and other devices across the network wirelessly or hardwired, except when downloading purchases from the ITunes Store. One HD tv show takes 4 hours to download and averages 1Mbps speed.
After running some test with various configuration it seems that the fact that the Downloads folder located within the ITunes Media folder (now stored on the NAS) is causing the poor download speed. When the Download folder is local on a HDD  it's got no problem reaching 60Mbps.
Unfortunately there is no way to tell ITunes to keep the Downloads folder local and the ITunes Media folder on NAS, it always stays within the Itunes Media folder no matter where this folder is located.
Permitting Itunes to keep the Downloads folder locally while downloading files and transferring the files to the ITunes Media folder (wherever it's located) once it's fully downloaded might be the simple solution to this common problem.
How about testing this out Apple!

I have some information to add to this.  I've been seeing these problems for quite some time since I started downloading in HD.  My library is rather large so I too decided to use another drive.  My case is different though I have and extra 2 TB internal drive and my media folder is on it.  This rules out all Wifi, network, or USB bottlenecks as a cause of the problem.  I have noted a few oddities about this behavior and I will mention them here although I am not sure what they mean.
    1.  If I set up a long list of downloads it seems to crawl on all downloads.  If I kill the "apple push" process the top two seem to speed up.  I have to maintain the list and only enable two downloads at a time to get anywhere near reasonble speeds but this method is great for one or two downloads at a time.
    2.  I was curious about this problem after watching it download for hours on a 24MBPS connection for just a few shows.  When I did yet another search I finally found this thread so I thought checking something out might be interesting.  I set up some HD movies to download on my secondary system that only has one hard drive.  Although not at full speed they began downloading much faster.  Three movies are all downloading on the single drive system faster than the one alone on the system with the Itunes media folder on a different drive.
Both systems are hard wired to the internet.
Finding this thread made me very curious I was wondering if there would be a performance boost if I uninstalled Itunes, and re-installed it on the media drive.  I really wanted that drive to be storage only but it makes me wonder if it would give different results or the same problem from not being on the OS drive.
Both systems are running Windows 7, and both are able to download streaming content, large files, or movies from other sites relatively instantly.

  • Slow Download Speed on macbook pro

I just bought a new 15 inch macbook pro and i'm having trouble downloading anything. i tried downloading software updates and it would be between 2kbps and about 600bps. the time remaining until the download finished started off at about 4 hours then went up to more than a day. i also attempted to install a computer game which is also downloading very slowly.

I'm very unhappy with the last 12 Mac Computers i5's we have put into production. There Download performance is terrible it starts of fast and then stalls out. The Snow Leopard Mac's 10.6.3 and 10.6.4 have cost me many hours of support and network trouble shooting! Here's the Deal, We have a 20/20 mb fiber line coming into our office, Can watch the graph in and out! not maxed out by any means. Even tried it after hours no better. we have about 50 other mac's in the same office running 10.5.x..... No issue downloads and uploads are fast and steady. Windows XP and 7 pc's run at the same pace no issues great download and great up. The problem has happened in these new snowleopard macs 10.6.3. example Just got a MacBookPro 15inch in today took it out of the box hooked it up loaded the screen got it up and running.... FRESH From Apple! started downloads took off good. 4 hrs later i was at 261.1 mb completed this was at 1:58 pm it is now 4 p.m. 2 hrs late and im at 274.7 MB less than 14mb. nothing is wrong with the network all other computers MAC or PC are working fine but all the MAC's we have put into place in the last 4 months are having the same issue! I tested it out i have my PC, my G5 (10.5.x), my IMac i5, and my MAC Pro i7 all sitting at desk all on a gigibit network connection piped into my 20mb line nothing else going on this switch. 500mb file download from the internet from another remote location... Started the Imac and the Mac Pro first. then my g5 and my Pc (HP 8710p). G5 and the PC, took right around 15 min to download the other two "NEW" computers are still going 4 and a 1/2 hours later they say they have 20 min remaining if you have a Fix for this apple please let me know! Fyi in my trouble shooting... if you go bop around on the slow Mac's on the internet for a bit it seem's to speed up the process a bit !?!?!?!?

  • Slow download speed on Macbook and Macbook Pro

So I'm running download and upload speed tests today because I just switched ISP's and got a faster pla
The results are puzzling: I get 20 Mbps on my iMac when it's plugged in via ethernet, I get about 16Mbps when it's on wifi, My Macbook just got 7Mbps via wifi, and my Macbook pro got 4Mbps on wifi.  Why the huge difference? My little Nexus 7 tablet got 20Mbps on the same wifi from the same location.  How come the Macs are so slow?
These results are typical and averaged over the last few hours.
Is there something in the settings I need to change?

  • Very slow download speed with intermittent halts

    Need some help.
I run Apple os/x latest version and have since yesterday begun to experience constant very slow download speeds.
I have rebooted the router and I have reset it. I have tested with wireless and wired into router. No real change.
The results are below and are pretty consistent no matter when or with what computer I test it with.
This is very frustrating and I would like to know if anyone has experienced this and if there is anything I can do before calling for service.

  • Continued SLOW online performance after two Archive & Installs

    Hi.
I have been living with slow online performance – pages slow to load, movies very slow to load, movies don't play back smoothly, constant buffering – for some 3-4 months before trying to do something about it... (this timeline coincides with a potential Security Update 2008-006 issue discussed here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1730909&tstart=0 , but I don't have enough savvy to know if that's the problem.)
Equivalent slow performance in both Safari and Firefox... I've compared the same sites I visit on other peoples workstations, PC and Mac, various ISPs – all of their pages and movies light up and play instantly.
Tried to research and do as much as I could before coming here, but I don't have great diagnostic skills... here's what I've got so far:
By late November, I managed to eliminate the ISP (Earthlink) as a cause of the problem... however, due to their direction to change DNS numbers, I can no longer automatically connect online upon booting, but must repeatedly connect via Internet Connect (separate issue?)... via these forums, I've reset the DNS to 208.67.220.220, 208.67.222.222.
Neither hard drive is even half full.
I did an initial Disk and Permissions Repair prior to first A&I... they needed repair then, but subsequent verifications check out clean.
After the first A&I (using the original OS X 10.4 install disk), I downloaded a complete full 10.4.11 update, including all current Security Updates... performance wound up much the same as before.
After the second A&I, and before any updating, I tested online performance – still slow... this time I downloaded only the Mac OS X 10.4.11 Combined Update from November 07, looking to avoid the 2008-006 Security Update... general browsing speed is slightly improved, but any site with a movie or rich graphics behaves like dial-up, as before... Mail is just ok – not fast, but not problematic.
Otherwise, the Mac works well enough, but it's never been a real speed-burner, imo... mainstream graphics apps (Adobe CS2, Quark 6)... the only atypical thing I might have is a Wacom graphics tablet (Intuos 3), but it's always worked fine... no games or brand-X playtime software.
The only other thing I'd be suspicious of is Network Settings, after getting the runaround at Earthlink... but the fact that I can get online at all might rule that out.
I've been at this for days, and am out of ideas... little help?
    Thanx.

OK, network settings is the scary stuff that I DO NOT understand...

    I found the PPPoE subpane.
Made the New location, it seemed to work briefly, then didn't, then I fumbled my way back to prior settings... I'm willing to try it again, BUT...
What scared me was that after setting New Location, the browser window opened to something called *Internet Configurator*, never seen this before... it asked for my email and password... is this normal?... I've got major privacy and security concerns and DO NOT want to put that password out there if I don't have to.
Please advise before I do this... thanks.

    iPhone 6 plus 124GB
My home line is optical fiber performance measured when iphone software update 8.1 is very slow download = Announced 14h00:
Download measured at the same time = 94.4 Mbps
Upload measured at the same time = 95.3 Mbps
What's going on? Is it the Apple server performance?

  • T520 - 42435gg / Sound stutter and slow Graphic performance with Intel Rapid Storage AHCI Driver

    Hi everybody,
I have serious Problems with my 42435gg
Any time I install the Intel Storage AHCI Driver (I've tried plenty of different versions) which is suggested by System Update I experience a horrible Sound stutter and slow Graphic performance in Windows 7 64-Bit.
The funny thing in this case: If the external e-sata port is connected the problems do not occur. If the port is unused again, the stutter begins immediately.
The only thing I can do is using the Windows internal Storage Driver with which I am not able to use my DVD recorder for example.
The device was sent to lenovo for hardware testing with no result. It was sent back without any repairing.
    Anybody experience on this?
    Kind regards,
    Daniel

  • More Than One Computer Trying to Access Web = Very Slow Download Speeds?

We have Verizon DSL with a basic Westell modem, which supposedly is only a modem with no router capabilities. We have an Airport Extreme Snow Base Station that acts as a WDS Main, with one other AEB Snow as a WDS Remote. All computers have unique ip addresses in the 10.0.1.X range as provided by the WDS Main's DHCP.
When only one computer connects to the internet to download web pages, software updates, etc., there seems to be no problem at all. When I do a speed check I get results that seem to be in the correct range, and it doesn't matter which computer I use for the test.
However, if we try to access the internet with more than one computer at the same time, everything slows to a crawl. Such as, if one computer is downloading software updates, the other CPUs have super slow web page downloads, slow to the point of connection time-outs at times. Or if two of the computers are simply trying to download web pages at the same time, one or the other has super slow downloads.
I feel like there is some kind of routing problem with the Base Station but for the life of me I cannot figure it out.
What could the problem be? Where could it originate, and what, if any, advice could someone give me to help trace the problem?
    Thanks in advance.

... the one computer I am looking at right now shows DNS servers as 10.0.1.1, which is the internal ip address of the AEB. Could this be part of the problem?
That is normal and shouldn't cause a problem. Essentially it tells the computer to ask the snow AirPort base station (ABS) for DNS information. The ABS will then provide the DNS information which it currently received from the ISP.
Would it help if I manually entered the DNS numbers that appear on the AEB on each machine's Network Preferences?
Probably not. A busy DNS server or faulty DNS info won't affect download speeds. That only affects browsing since that requires the computer to convert human readable addresses to numbers that the computer can use.
Remember that the snow ABS only operates at 802.11b (11 Mbps) speeds. Then when you use WDS it cuts your available wireless bandwidth in half.

Hello, I have a Macbook Pro 13 running mountain lion 10.8.4 has a very slow download on safari and i don't know why it is like this. Any help with this please.

1.Download speed depends on the Internet Service Provider.
2.Power off the router. Wait awhile. Power it back on. Wait until all the lights are lit up properly.
       It will take a while.
       Restart the computer.

Thanks for the pointers folks. Yeah, 1.5GB is pretty poor isn't it? There are other suppliers, but you have to get a their phone line installed to access the internet so it's an £85 setup fee plus a day off work for a guy to come round and drill a hole in your wall before you even get to the monthly costs.
Don't get me wrong though - I'm certainly not an Apple basher, but am equally frustrated with both them and the ISP.
Virgin Media spend all kinds of money advertising their broadband as the fastest in the UK, but don't tell you (up front anyway) that you'll be cut off if you actually try and use it.
Apple on the other hand carry on with their 'it just works' mantra, but with Apple TV this only applies if you meet certain criteria (again, not mentioned up front).
I guess it aint a biggie, as i was gifted my Apple TV, and love all the other stuff it does, but from the number of posts on this forum can see that there's a lot of angry customers out there who want explanations as to why they're having similar problems to me.
Will be very interesting to see if Apple release any kind of software update that turns the flash drive from a buffer to permanent storage, to at least ease some of the pain...
