Slow download speed on my macbook pro compared to windows.
Hello,
When i use my macbook pro to download a file i hit very slow download speeds (50 kb/s tops), compared to fast download speeds in vista using boot camp (300 kb/s tops) and the same when i use my brothers PC.
Anyone know how i can fix this or why it might be happening?
thanks
Common strategies:
* Use ethernet instead of wireless.
* Get a better/upgraded ISP.
* Get a better/upgraded router.

Macbook Pro compared to Windows Laptop
Hi,
I'm a long-time windows user and I'm looking for a new laptop pc. My main uses are 3d studio max 2009, autocad 2009, photoshop, premiere and various other windows software. I don't have any exotic peripherals beyond usb card readers, external hard drive and usb mouse.
The last time I bought my Vaio laptop, I was looking at getting a macbook, but bootcamp was in beta, and I felt that jumping to the MBP at that time could have been an expensive gamble.
Fast forward to October 2009, and the MBP now has some good graphics hardware and bootcamp appears to be a more mature product. I like the glossy screen, which seems to be as good as the dual-lamp screen of the Vaio FW11ZU which I am considering as a PC alternative to the 2.4ghz macbook pro.
I REALLY need to use certain PC-only software for the forseeable future, and would also like to take advantage of the gaming possibilities of the laptop, so my question is this (I got there eventually!!):
Is the macbook pro, when running in windows vista (via bootcamp) simnply a (beautiful) windows compatible machine? Are there any things which just don't work? Can I buy the MBP safe in the knowledge that the windows side of things will work as if I have a windows pc?
Any advice/links would be appreciated.
Cheers.Hi snarffmax
I'm also a long-time Windows (& Mac) user. You would be fine getting a MBP to run all your Windows software with Apple's Boot Camp drivers. Basically, the Intel Macs are posh PCs, with v little difference in the hardware except they don't have a BIOS - EFI replaces it, and does the job of booting both OS X and Windows. Boot Camp was at v. 2 with Leopard, but earlier in the year Apple released an update, which is no doubt on the DVD the comes with the new unibody machines.
The only thing I would advise is as big a hard disk as you can afford for both the OSs. 250 GB is a bare minimum. When you get the machine, run the Boot Camp Assistant in the Utilities folder (in the Applications folder). Partition the hard disk, & then install Vista in the normal way. (You may need to format the partition as NTFS once in the Vista setup). As soon as you've logged into Windows for the first time, put the DVD that came with the Mac back into the drive & let Windows install the Boot Camp drivers. Once it's done this & rebooted, immediately install virus software. I use avast! free Home version which is extremely good. (The firewall with Vista is perfectly adequate. No replacement is needed).
Good luck, let us know how you get on.

Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
I'd use the advice in this thread to investigate the signal and noise levels that your MacBook Pro sees:

If it sees a weak signal or a lot of noise, that could explain the speed problem. -

Extremely Slow Download Speeds Compared To Pc
My PC when downloads the same file at 100+ kb/s when my MacBook downloads at maximum of 25-30 kb/s.
How can I speed it up.I'm getting a slow download speed, what can I do to improve it?
If you are using a firewall or router, be sure that ports 6112, 3724, and 6881 through 6999 are open and forwarded to your computer and only your computer. Refer to your firewall/router's documentation for instructions on opening ports and setting up port forwarding. Also, make sure that no other programs that use bandwidth are running while using the Blizzard Downloader.

Very slow download speeds with ATT U-Verse
Hello,
Experiencing very slow download speeds with Macbook Pro 2011, on Lion, and ATT UVerse Max, which should allow for an avg. 11-12 MBPS speed. Instead, I get a fluctuating 60-370 kbps speed. I am not experiencing this problem on my Windows machines (Laptop running Windows 7 and Desktop on XP), it is only affecting the Macbook pro. I wonder if this issue is a known problem with ATT U-Verse and Macs, I spent hours yesterday with their support online and they couldn't help me, stating that from their side all settings were OK; the first representative from ATT re-booted the router remotely and that seemed to work for about 10 minutes, and then it went back to a crawling speed...
Any suggestions welcome!
ThanksDo you have QOS enabled in your router? Did you try plugging the win7 laptop directly and check the speed?

Internet Speed Issues w/ MacBook Pro
I've been having problems with my internet connection and speed using my MacBook Pro. Using speedtest.net, and connected directly to my modem, the highest download speed I've reached is 4.03 Mbps. Connecting using my wireless router (D-Link DIR 655) I only get 2.33 Mbps. Using my roommates new unibody MacBook Pro, I was able to reach 18 Mbps, wirelessly 15.03. I called my service provider, Rogers, and they said the line to my house is fine. Their tests indicated that my download speed should be approximately 10 Mbps. Regularly, I have to turn airport on and off in order to get things working properly. Occasionally, I have to reset my modem. I'm trying to understand why there would be a difference between the two MacBooks. Clearly there is an issue with mine. Can anyone recommend possible remedies for this issue, or at least some things I could try out? Thanks very much.

Slower download speeds from Arch
Hello,
I am getting slower download speeds from Arch Linux than from my other distros. I have googled and applied the following "fixes" but they don't improve the download speed.
1. I shut off ipv6:
# /etc/modprobe.conf
alias net-pf-10 off
alias ipv6 off
2. I shut off ipv6 in firefox.
3. Here's my /etc/rc.conf:
DAEMONS=(syslog-ng iptables dhcpcd network netfs portmap ntp crond alsa gpm kdm cpufreq)
lo="lo 127.0.0.1"
eth0="dhcp"
INTERFACES=(lo eth0)
4. Here's Arch compared with Zenwalk:
Arch vs Zenwalk download and upload speeds by
http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/
Arch 17719 kbs down 2049 kbs up
Zenwalk 21537 kbs down 2779 kbs up
5. Ping tests are equal:
Arch: 64 bytes from 64.233.167.99: icmp_seq=1 ttl=242 time=41.2 ms
Zenwalk: 64 bytes from py-in-f99.google.com (64.233.167.99): icmp_seq=34
ttl=242 time=40.5 ms
6. I also tried a different browser, and tried stopping iptables.
Can anyone help?

Thank You,
I was just about to ask about kernel modules/drivers. forcedeth is the nic driver, I think. But i have no idea how to correct something that's compiled in. I will stay with what I have for now. until I learn somemore. I like Arch Linux and plan to stay with it.

iTunes won't open after downloading software update. Macbook Pro OSX10.6.8 Simple solution? And by the way, this is apparently a common problem and Apple has completely failed to warn in advance or offer a quick straightforward solution - used to be a good company, but it's becoming just another crappy screw-the-consumer corporation.
It would help to know versions here. I'm guessing your update put an older version of something into a place where a newer version of something iTunes put in there existed. Updating an earlier OSX version to 10.6.8 is still only updating to system software that was issued several years ago. If you are running some slightly newer version of iTunes issued subsequent to 10.6.8 and you just updated to 10.6.8 you may have put in an older version of something iTunes uses. Anyway, I'm guessing here until we know exactly what you did.

After downloading Maverick on the MacBook Pro that I bought in 2011, I am unable to open iPhoto. The message says "You can't use this version of the application "iPhoto" with this version of OS X. You have "iPhoto" 9.2.3" What??? That is ridiculous. Why doesn't Maverick download everything? I've tried the "fixes" I found on this forum, but none of them work for me, because there is no workaround via the library. I can't access the library.
I have an old iPhoto version and it still works with Mavericks, the version before yours, that is puzzling.

Went through this step-by-step, but alas it did not solve the problem. For some reason I can download mail on my Macbook Pro and iPhone, but no my iMac. Connection Doctor shows all green lights. This started today when I was prompted to re-enter incoming mail server passwords. I re-entered passowrds yet again to make sure they were correct. Rebuilt the inBox. Connection Doctor continues to show all green lights, but am still unable to download mail to the inbox. Has anyone else ever run into this problem?
I have the exact same problem trying to use the Remote app on both my iPhone 3gs and iPad 2 with either my Mac or ATV2. My Remote app used to work on my phone - I can't recall if I ever actually used it with my iPad, but when I tried today, I got all the same results as you did (on both iPad, and then iPhone). I was using my ATV2 to play music from iTunes on my Mac and wanted to use the Remote app, but it would not connect to either device no matter what I did.
