Slow download speed through Time Capsule

My download speed with my MacBook Pro directly connected to my modem is 24 Mbps, my download speed using Time Capsule as a wireless router .86 Mbps - Any ideas???

Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
I'd use the advice in this thread to investigate the signal and noise levels that your MacBook Pro sees:

If it sees a weak signal or a lot of noise, that could explain the speed problem.

  • Internet Speed Through Time Capsule Much Slower than Direct Ethernet

My internet download and streaming speed is pitifully slow. I'm connected by an 802.11n wireless network based in my 1TB Time Capsule. I swear it used to be faster, and has been slowing down. When I'm connected directly to my cable modem via ethernet, I'm getting T1 speeds. But through the TC, I'm getting bad DSL speeds. I originally set up my network automatic defaults. I've tried setting static DNS settings (according to a discussion thread that seems to have worked for others), changing airport channels, rebooting, etc., and nothing helps.
I haven't located much about this problem in other discussions; any threads I have found are mainly unanswered. Am I missing something? Can anyone help?

That may be due to a weak WiFi signal. To provide a third data point, connect your MacBook Pro to the a LAN port of the Time Capsule with an Ethernet cable, turn off your Mac's AirPort circuitry, and rerun your speed tests. That will allow you to separate the effect of a wireless connection from the effect of the Time Capsule.
I'd also investigate the signal strength and noise of your wireless connection as described in this post:

  • Slow reading speed on Time Capsule disk

I get terribly slow TC disk speed when measured with Black Magic tool using Wifi and even slower on Ethernet.
I get low speeds on Wifi but even lower speeds on Ethernet connection. See attached pics below.
    Wifi:
My TC is on Wifi using N network and 5ghz and it seems the speed I get over the Wifi is reasonable. Based on Pondini blog, here are approximate speeds for USB, ethernet and Wifi:
    http://pondini.org/TM/29.html
Pondini's figures don't seem to take into consideration a 5Ghz Wifi connection, which should be about 2x faster than 2.4ghz (144Mbps vs 300Mbps). So I am assuming the transfer would be around 20-40 GB per hour which was roughly what I experienced when doing testing using file transfers (and slightly below USB 2.0). TC will not operate on this maximum speed as there are other factors, such as overhead, internet connection and TC hardware itself.
It seems to be reasonable, it takes me about 4-6 hours to backup 100GB Time Machine backup. Is this amount of time normal? I assume yes.
    Ethernet:
Recently I needed to restore a file from TimeMachine. I started to browse but the browsing using the TimeMachine app was horribly slow. So I thought using Ethernet cable instead of Wifi would make things better. No way. So I tested the speed of the hard drive using the Black Magic tool and below is what I get - the speed of Reading on Ethernet is much slower than Wifi.
If I interpret the numbers correctly, the Black Magic tool shows MB/s, in which case 11-15MB/s should be about 80-120 mbps, which is roughly the G speed on Wifi and roughly about 50% of the maximum speed of N network?
    Are these calculations correct?
If these numbers are correct, the results are acceptable, as I would not expect the Time Capsule Hard Disk to reach the maximum speeds provided through the Ethernet or Wifi connection.
However, what concerns me is why is the reading speed through Ethernet so slow. It's only 3.5 MB/s.
Activity monitor is not much help, it's hard to figure out where is the issue.
    My Setup:
MacBook 2012, Mavericks 10.9.4, Time Capsule 2012, Ethernet, Wifi N 5Ghz. No other machines or appliances active. Internet and network seems to operate fine, no issues.
    This is ETHERNET:
    THIS IS WIFI:

    OSX:
Yes there are many issues with Mavericks, it almost feels like OSX 11.0 and not 10.9.5 from the bugginess. I can't speak for how the system is changing from inside but most of it doesn't affect me, so it's mostly the annoying things that pop up and the good things that just go away because Apple keep "dummy-fying" the OS.
I was considering downgrade to Snow Leopard couple of months back but it would not support the hardware. It wasn't so much editing the supported hardware list to installation but the drivers are missing for newer hardware in SL. I used to mess around with Windows but I am not ready to mess OSX yet. I still keep Snow Leopard on one of my machines and I always like to go back to it as it feels consistent and light.
    Speed:
    You found the reason.
    1. Yes I turned off wireless and ethernet when testing one or the other.
    2. Ethernet is 100baseTX and grayed out.. because..
    3. I should have realized it's because I use USB ethernet Apple adapter. But given the USB has 480Mbs speed, after taking into account some overhead, the speed should still be higher than Wifi. Or maybe not.. I made assumption it should be fast enough so I didn't even consider that could be bottleneck on it's own.
    TC:
If your TC is 2012 then it is Gen4.. .... recommend you downgrade the firmware to 7.6.1.....
Yes, I upgraded to latest firmware. Yes, it's TC Gen 4. By mistake, I didn't know there are issues. But soon I realized for instance Apple has removed the setting in Airport to force "N" radio for network only. To simplify things, you get now combined N, B, G whether you like it or now. Now things may interfere with your other networks and if you happen to use non-apple clients connecting to AirPort, you end up with hodge-podge N and B/G connectivity that slows down the network even more.
If Apple releases the BASH update, it probably needs to be upgraded anyways? I assume their software on Airport is also Unix / Linux flavour?

  • Broadband Speed through Time Capsule or Airport Express.

    Dear forum.
Question about broadbandspeeds via wireless. Does it has speed limitations in relation to cable.
I have a Timecapsule and 2 pcs. the Airport Express to extend the wireless network. I have cable my iMac via Time Capsule, and this can have max. download speed of 44000 kbit/s and upload at 40000 kbit/s. When I do a speed test via wireless on my 3 laptops (Windows) and iphone, so I do not get more than 18,000 kbit/s download and 18000 kbit/s upload. Is there anyone who can tell me if Time C. and Airport E. can be modified to run the same speed as cable or is that just a limitation here. I've been looking like crazy but could not find an answer here on.
    Thank you in advance .
    Henrik

Hello H Salk. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Enabling NAT on any Internet router, not just the AirPort & Time Capsule, will affect data transfer rates (in both directions) to devices connected either by wire or wireless to that router.

  • Slow transfer speed on time capsule

First of all im new to this whole MAC thing. I have a new IMac that can communicate with an attached Time Capsule. I can send files to and from the Time Capsule on the IMac at a decent rate.
I am having trouble with the Win & PC that I have also got on the same network. It can see the Time Capsule OK and can also send files to and get files from the Time Capsule OK, but the speed at which it does so is very slow as compared to the MAC.
I am getting about 2.5 MB/sec. I have a wireless N card on the WIN machine and by all apparent standards WIN shows the wireless connection at 802.11N with all signal bars with a connection speed of 144Mbps
Is there something I can do to speed this up ?
    Thank you, Erich

The mac is at 195 - 250 on a regular basis.
To get that speed the mac is connecting on the 5ghz band.. The Mac also auto swaps bands.. PC cannot do that.
Apple restrict 2.4ghz to max 150mbps which will be 130 or 144mbps you are getting.
The best idea is to force the TC to give out different names for the two bands.. in the wireless setup give 5ghz a different name.. force the PC to join 5ghz.
The  connection over 5Ghz is at a solid 300 on the PC and 450 on the Mac. Again, why cant they both connect at the same if they are using the same standards?
They are not connecting at the same standard.. PC is using a 300mbps card .. if you want 450mbps you will have to buy a compliant 450mbps card. This is new and really not part of the N standard.
And I tried to change the wireless channel on the PC USB adaptor but cant find an option for that under wireless properties. There are a lot of things to change, just not that.
You change channel on Tx.. not the Rx.. ie the host not the client.. all changes to wireless channels are made on the TC.

  • Slow downloads when using Time Capsule

When I connect directly to my modem, I can get speed up to 30Mbps.  When I plug my modem into my Time Capsule, my download speeds go way down to under 7Mbps.  Is there any way to increase my speed?

The TC is  model number A1254 and is at least 3 years old.  i honestly can't remember when I bought it, but it may just be old.
Yes, that is the Gen1 TC and is old. We have found they get unreliable even if the power supply keeps going after about 3years.
    Anyway.. do some tests..
    1. Factory reset the TC. If you haven't done it already it is worth taking it back to scratch.
    2. Force the speed of the WAN port to 100mbps.
Your current speed is below the 10mbps everything goes to when things go bad. So check the ethernet cable is good. When you setup WAN, there is option to set the WAN speed. (It is probably missing in v6 airport utility of course).
    3. Check the ethernet cables are good just use them between LAN port of the TC and Mac..
    4. Apple keep trying to update everything all the time but IMO v7.6.1 firmware on the old TC may not be the best.. hold down the option key when you update firmware to choose 7.5.2 firmware and see how that goes.
But you could just be up for a replacement. If you do get another TC make sure you get it on 7day return as the issue could happen again even with the latest one.
Use v5 utility. In your profile you are using Lion.. just download and install it.

  • How many thousands of Apple TV users have to scream their complaints before Apple will respond to the fury over the impossibly slow download speeds of movies bought through iTunes??????

How many thousands of Apple TV users have to scream their complaints before Apple will respond to the fury over the impossibly slow download speeds of movies bought through iTunes?

As jules says, your rate (currently at least) may be slow.
If it used to be good I wonder is your ISP is slowing ('throttling') your speed after you've used so many GB of a quota each day or month - check what they think you should be getting as a download speed.
While Apple's servers do occasionally play up, it's generally the ISP being slow not Apple.
If you're using Google's DNS servers that has caused issues for some.
Recommended speeds for near instant playback:
    SD         2.5Mbps
    720p      6 Mbps
    1080p    8 Mbps
Is your speed test from somewhere like speedtest.net?
It might be helpful to post Mbps to ensure we/you are not confusing speeds by using different units to those measured.

  • My Canon MF4100 works connected direct to iMac, but not through Time Capsule

Hello, I cant seem to get my canon laser printer to work when connected to the time capsule.  It works fine when connected directly to the Mac.  I have downloaded the most recent drivers from the Canon website.  I have tried almost every solution I can find: deleted all printers, reinstalled, installed connected directly to the Mac then try to add through time capsule, restarted time capsule, reset time capsule, etc and nothing seems to work.
I also have a PC connected to the time capsule as well and the printer is not visible to add on the PC but I believe once I can get it to work on the Mac the PC will work.  I am assuming I have a printer that is not compatible but it works perfectly well and dont want to spend another 300 on a printer.  Very frustrated please help.  Thanks!

You need to install Bonjour Print Services on the PC to make it work.
The MF4100 might not be TC compatible. You might be able to use a powered USB hub with the TC, or use a WiFi print server (these can be found quite cheaply).

  • Extremely Slow Download Speeds Compared To Pc

My PC when downloads the same file at 100+ kb/s when my MacBook downloads at maximum of 25-30 kb/s.
How can I speed it up.

I'm getting a slow download speed, what can I do to improve it?
If you are using a firewall or router, be sure that ports 6112, 3724, and 6881 through 6999 are open and forwarded to your computer and only your computer. Refer to your firewall/router's documentation for instructions on opening ports and setting up port forwarding. Also, make sure that no other programs that use bandwidth are running while using the Blizzard Downloader.
Please consult our Slow Download Speeds page for more information:

  • E1200 router: very slow download speeds, ok uploady got

I recently set up a new E1200 router to replace my old one. We are having problems with very slow download speeds (often <0.10 Mbps) even while the upload speeds are OK (8-10 Mbps). Our previous download speed over wifi was 10-15 Mbps.
When I first set it up, the download speed was very poor on the initial computer. After fooling around, it was fine. I don't know what I did that made it speed up. However, my wife's computer has had very poor download speeds. After rebooting my computer, the download speed has also dropped bak to <0.10. I was able to stream Hulu on my Wii just fine an hour ago.
    What could the problem be?

So we could have this isolated, check how much speed you’re getting straight to the modem so we’ll have some point of comparison that from your internet provider. If through the router, you have struggles with not getting an acceptable value for download speed especially if it only happens with the wireless connection, you can try these: change the wireless channel and the wireless security on the router. If on the router, you have the channel set to auto by default change it to (3,6,9,11), just have to play around with it. Moreover, for the wireless security, select WPA2 Personal. If that doesn’t make any difference, update the firmware of the router, reset and have it reconfigured.

  • Slower download speeds from Arch

    Hello,
I am getting slower download speeds from Arch Linux than from my other distros. I have googled and applied  the following "fixes" but they don't improve the download speed.

  • Sigh slow download speeds iPad

Is anyone having problems with slower download speeds on iPads and if so  any suggestions to fix? Also some videos on my laptop, ex: like twitter mobile uploads I'm trying to view, are slow. Come to think of it, some youtube things slow to download on laptop, too, so not the sites' faults..  Is it Verizon's?  Why is the download speed erratic to non-exisitent on certain videos with Fios?

The first thing that needs to be checked first is the FiOS connection. Go to http://measurementlab.net/measurement-lab-tools#tool1 and perform a speed test using a computer connected via Ethernet and see if the results match what you should be getting on your connection. Additionally on the iPad, visit testmy.net and perform their download speed test. If you have any additional PCs in the home that can use Wireless, perform a speed test over Wireless using the Measurement Lab address.
