Slow downloading from iTunes

Any idea why it takes 3 hours to download one 45 minute episode from iTunes? Do I need to change something in my settings?
Thanks, Tracy

In my case, at least, it has nothing to do with ISP throttling. I am able to download at from everywhere except the iTunes store. The problem is on their end, and it's ridiculous - especially when they advertise so heavily about the instantly availability of movies and music from iTunes store. They're unable to deliver the service they've advertised. It's no different than going to Blockbuster on a Saturday evening and finding them closed for no reason. And Apple will suffer the same fate Blockbuster did if they keep up providing crappy service.

  • Extremely slow download from Itunes store when on NAS

    Hi All,
Since the latest Itunes update 10.6 I've been experiencing extremely slow download from the store. Set up is as follows (with all the latest firmware and software upgrades done on everything)
ITunes DB and XML locally stored on HDD
Itunes Media Folder stored on NAS DNS-323
DNS 323 NAS hardwired to network by 1000 Gb LAN Connection
         Cabled Internet connection at 60Mbps
There is no issue running Itunes from the NAS to MAC / APPLETV and other devices across the network wirelessly or hardwired, except when downloading purchases from the ITunes Store. One HD tv show takes 4 hours to download and averages 1Mbps speed.
After running some test with various configuration it seems that the fact that the Downloads folder located within the ITunes Media folder (now stored on the NAS) is causing the poor download speed. When the Download folder is local on a HDD  it's got no problem reaching 60Mbps.
Unfortunately there is no way to tell ITunes to keep the Downloads folder local and the ITunes Media folder on NAS, it always stays within the Itunes Media folder no matter where this folder is located.
Permitting Itunes to keep the Downloads folder locally while downloading files and transferring the files to the ITunes Media folder (wherever it's located) once it's fully downloaded might be the simple solution to this common problem.
How about testing this out Apple!

I have some information to add to this.  I've been seeing these problems for quite some time since I started downloading in HD.  My library is rather large so I too decided to use another drive.  My case is different though I have and extra 2 TB internal drive and my media folder is on it.  This rules out all Wifi, network, or USB bottlenecks as a cause of the problem.  I have noted a few oddities about this behavior and I will mention them here although I am not sure what they mean.
    1.  If I set up a long list of downloads it seems to crawl on all downloads.  If I kill the "apple push" process the top two seem to speed up.  I have to maintain the list and only enable two downloads at a time to get anywhere near reasonble speeds but this method is great for one or two downloads at a time.
    2.  I was curious about this problem after watching it download for hours on a 24MBPS connection for just a few shows.  When I did yet another search I finally found this thread so I thought checking something out might be interesting.  I set up some HD movies to download on my secondary system that only has one hard drive.  Although not at full speed they began downloading much faster.  Three movies are all downloading on the single drive system faster than the one alone on the system with the Itunes media folder on a different drive.
Both systems are hard wired to the internet.
Finding this thread made me very curious I was wondering if there would be a performance boost if I uninstalled Itunes, and re-installed it on the media drive.  I really wanted that drive to be storage only but it makes me wonder if it would give different results or the same problem from not being on the OS drive.
Both systems are running Windows 7, and both are able to download streaming content, large files, or movies from other sites relatively instantly.

  • Very Slow Downloading from iTunes on iPad Mini

    Hello:
Having just spent almost £550 on a wifi & cellular 64 gb iPad mini, I thought I was getting something that was state of the art !
However, I discover that the very first movie I pay for and want to download using my wifi connection from iTunes simply will not download on to my iPad mini in anything that one would expect to be a reasonable time.  As I write it is Sunday evening and the  iTunes download indicator is telling me it will be over 36 hours until I finish downloading this 3 gb movie !
Using the same wifi connection and within a few minutes after giving up with the iPad mini I am able to download the exact same movie on to my MacBook Air in under 30 minutes.
So, I conclude this has nothing to do with the my wifi download speed or anthing else, other than the fact that the iPad mini connection simply does not work at anything approximating to an acceptable standard.
The reason I have purchased the 64 gb iPad mini is so that I can download movies and watch them when travelling. It looks like this is not going to be possible if it is going to take hours and hours to download each movie !
So, other than some kind of self-administered help (which I would be happy to hear about if anybody has solved this problem for themselves), and after having spent a great deal of money on an item which is advertised as being iTunes compatible and being sold as something to watch tv and movies on, I wonder if Apple has yet twigged this glaring inadequacy and are thinking of doing something about it ?
After all, I have spent a lot of money on something that is not doing what I had expected it to do and which it is advertised as being able to do.
Please help me out, Apple, or I might have to return this to you and ask for my money back.  Or go to Trading Standards about misleading advertising ?  I mean it is wifi, it has iTunes, it has Videos - but I can't really use them in any acceptable way.  Why would I spend all that money for something that doesn't do what it says on the can ?
    Thanks.
    Chris

  • Very slow download from iTunes to iPod

    Hi,
It takes about 2 minutes to download a cd from iTunes (4.7.1) to my iPod click wheel. Software is updated (3.1.1). I tried to restore the iPod, reinstall iTunes, but nothing seems to work. I use firewire. If I transfer the whole library, it eventually stops after a while. My other iPod (dock connector) works fine. The click wheel one used to work fine until I updated Mac OS (10.2.8) and reinstalled everything.
    Help!!!
    G4   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

Play the song on iTunes for a few seconds while connected to the Internet and enter your account details when prompted; this will complete the authorization process and enable you to transfer the song to your iPod.

  • Slow downloads from iTunes

OK I figured it might have been my own fault. After installing iTunes 10 (installed OK) I started to download a 1gb movie 2 DAYS later it still has 8 hours remaining - and that includes overnight, on/off peak times for UK and USA. I put this down to all the iTunes 10 software being pushed out, etc.
But I have just downloaded the latest iOS 4.1 SDK seed (2.94gb) in 9 minutes (around 5.5 to 5.7MB/sec - I'm on a 50mb cable connection). So it isn't my connection and it's film about aviation - so not going to be downloaded by the masses.
Something wrong with itunes 10 - has anyone else had movie/download speed problems with iTunes 10?

I've just spent a lot of time with tech support to get an answer. Not sure it's THE answer, but seems to have worked for me. I was asked to remove the following from Mac HD > Library > Preferences > SystemConfiguration:
    com.apple.airport.preferences.plist
    com.apple.network.identification.plist
    NetworkInterfaces.plist
    preferences.plist
I restarted the computer & re-chose my own wi-fi network. VOILA. All is working normally. Multiple podcast files, including videos, are downloading at an acceptable speed.
One other thing that may help is to de-select "allow simultaneous downloads" in your itunes Downloads screen to ensure each file goes as quickly as possible. 30-minute podcasts are taking about 30 seconds to download. Perfect.
I still recommend uninstalling & reinstalling before you do any of that if you're able to save/back-up your library of mp3s first. Instructions for that are here: http://www.ehow.com/how5596597uninstall-reinstall-itunes-mac-osx.html

  • Very slow video downloading from iTunes

I have a FIOS 75Mbit connection (and get can 75Mbit on my N-router and Macbook Pro's WIFI).  But my new 1080p Apple TV is another matter. Two minute trailers take longer than 2 minutes to download. Half hour HD TV shows can take 90 minutes to download! And if I try to watch a movie I rented, Apple TV tells me it'll be ready to watch in "about 5 hours".
So my immediate reaction is ***. Any ideas why my wireless performance is so great with my MBP and so terrible with my AppleTV (just 10 feet away)

I stumbled across this thread looking for help with the same issue...slow to very slow movie downloads from iTunes.
Changing the DNS, both on my iMac as well as my Airport Extreme router helped.
I'm on Comcast and generally get around 33Mbps downloads via speedtest.net.  Based on several Namebench tests Google's Public DNS (8.8.8.8) has always been on top and I've always configured my router and Macs using the top 3 Namebench recommendations with Google at #1 position.  However while downloading movies from iTunes Activity Monitor showed very sharp "Data received/sec" rises and falls...anywhere from 4.40MB/sec to 100KB/sec or sometimes zero.  Most of the time it would start off well, but trail off to very poor and sporatic speeds after about 30 seconds.
Per finaleMile's and other's recommendations elsewhere I removed Google Public DNS from the settings on my router and iMac and things improved with respect to stability.  Although the "top speed" of about 4.40Mbps didn't improve, downloads did smooth out and remain between about 2.30Mbps to 4.10Mbps during the entire download.  Not speedy but a marked improvement in stability and overall download time.
    Thanks for the tip!
BTW, I've found that during regular web surfing, using Google's Public DNS is faster so I re-add it after downloading movies from iTunes.  It's a bit of a PIA, but worth it.  Wish there were a better option though.
FWIW I tend to download rented and purchased movies to iTunes on my iMac and then play them back via my Apple TV3 rather than "stream" them directly from iTunes.  That way if there are external network problems they won't have a negative impact on our viewing experience.

It sounds like you might have a slow wifi internet connection?  How fast is it with a speed test from your iPad.

  • Songs downloaded from itunes not playing on ipod

Hi, maybe someone can help me. Recently I noticed that the songs I have downloaded from itunes are not playing on my ipod. They are working fine on my computer. As far as I know all my software is up to date and I even tried backing up my files and restoring my ipod, and the songs from itunes are still not playing. Is there something else I can do?

If you're talking about apps, then you have downloaded iOS apps which are intended to run on an iPhone or iPad, not a Mac.

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer for this very occasion.  Use your backup copy to put everything back.
If for some reason you have failed to maintain a backup copy, not good, then you can redownload some itunes purchases in some countries:

  • How do I move all my iphone information to a new computer/itunes without having access to me old computer/itunes including music which was not downloaded from itunes?

My itunes is 100miles away from me and I want to move all the information on my iphone to my new itunes on a new computer including music which has not been downloaded from itunes and all my apps. Please help as I am still on version 3.1.3.

You should be able to extract the media from the device with the tips in  this post from forum regular Zevoneer but I'm not sure what the implications are for your application settings. You can probably transfer your purchases into a newly authorised library, backup the device, recover any other media using third party tools, then restore the device from the backup. That should switch the assocation of the device to the new machine but I've not had cause to personally test the method.
