Slow downloads, fast uploads with WRT160N/macbook

I posted this on the Apple support forum and never heard anything, so I hope you guys can help me...
I had AT&T DSL and used their wireless modem, then recently switched to cable and got the WRT160N.  I am using a white macbook from early 2008 (pre-aluminum) OS X 10.5.6, 2.4 GHz, 4GB RAM, and my roommate has a similar white macbook (not sure on the stats), though his is a year or two older.  While on DSL, I never noticed much problem with speed, but now that I've got cable, pages seem to load slower than DSL.
So, I did some testing and found on www.speedtest.net that my downloads are usually in the 900-1200kb/s range, while uploads are 6,000-8,000kb/s (upload FASTER than download).  There have been occasions where I have gotten faster (up to 14,000ish for download), but >99% of the time it's in the slow range I listed.  However, when I use a wired connection, it is fast (14,000+ download), my roommate using his macbook wirelessly  is fast (I think he got 12,000+ download speed the one time I had him do the test), and when I took my macbook to another wireless network (at a hospital I was rotating at), it was downloading at about 10,000.  My upload speeds are relatively consistent throughout.  I also tried the cnet download speed page once or twice and saw similar results.
So, brief summary: It seems that only my download speed is affected, and only when it's MY macbook and MY home wireless network.
Thanks in advance!

Yeah, laptop to router via cable is very fast, at times >20,000 kbps dowloads.
The only thing that seems to be problematic is the:
-download speed
-with wireless to
-(only) my laptop
-only on that router/network.
Upload speeds are fine throughout, downloads are fine when it's wired, it's fine when I take it somewhere else and use wireless, and my roommate's macbook works great on this network...so I'm guessing it's some combination of those variables that's causing this?

  • Slower download than upload

I've got two macs running 10.5.8, one is connected to my Airport Extreme "N" by ethernet and one by wireless. The one on ethernet is getting 20 mb download and 6 mb upload. My wireless which is in another room is getting 5 mb download and 6 mb upload.
I can't figure why it would be possible to have faster upload than download. Any ideas? I've rebooted the machines, the modems, and base station. The Mini is connected by ethernet and the Macbook by wireless.

    Dunno.
What happens if you use a wired connection with the 'book?

  • My MBA keep downloading and uploading with no obvious reason?

Here is a link to the original post https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3015185
I will go crazy over this one! The problem started almost 10 days ago .
My Mac Book air keeps downloading and uploading KBs ranging from 2 KBsto 30 KBs Ups and Downs (see the attachment please ).
I'm living currently in Amman/Jordan and using Orange 3G+ USB dongle and InternetEverywhere software to connect (check the screen shot).
I also installed Protemac and there was no app I tracked which was the reasonbehind the constant download/upload during idle time .
I did everything; formatted and clean installed Os X , installed antivirus(nothing found ),checked the USB dongle with Windows 7 operating system and tomy surprise everything is fine .
I tried to reinstall the driver many times from http://www.orange.jo/en/software.php and again nothing has changed the same behavior again !
I called Orange tech support and they said if there is no  problem with Windows 7 there is nothing that we can do .
What I have noticed is that when I connect to internet the Orange software only downoald 11 KBs and then stopped ,the preoblem start when I open a page on firefox or Safari and then after seconds the activity monitor start to regestier upload and downalod activity (both ways) ranging from 3 KBs ups and 3 KBs downn to 25 KBs Ups and 25 KBs down , this is just like a loop activity .
Should I leave this problem to eat all my bandwidth threshold ,is their something wrong with my MBA ( I hope not )
Please help me with this .

Here is a snap shot of CPA - Cocoa Packet Analyzer, the thing is that I don't know how to translate the packets being sent or received

  • Slow download on network with fast upload.

I just recently purchased a 24" iMac and I'm having networking issues. I connect to my PC server and see all the files just fine. The problem is, when I try and copy anything off of the server or read files off the server in programs like InDesign CS4, the network slows down completely. When I take a 500mb file and upload it to the same server, it uploads it at the normal gigabit speeds. Taking that same 500mb file and try and copy it back off, it takes hours.
I also have a Mac based ftp server running Rumpus. If I connect to the ftp mac directly and download a file, it's very slow, but if I use Cyberduck or the web-based downloader, it downloads at Gigabit speeds.
It seems anything I try and copy directly off the servers, or work on files that reside on the server it is very, very slow. I have an older Intel iMac 20" right next to the new one and it still reads the network just fine. Copies and uploads very fast to the same server. I set up the custom IP address, DNS servers, etc. the same on both machines and this new iMac is not working well on the network.
A couple of years ago I purchased another Intel iMac 20" that had similar problems on the network. After weeks of the Apple Store checking it out, they told me that the network controller chip went bad. Could this possibly happen again on another iMac?
I could really use some help on this. If I need to take this new iMac to the Apple Store to get checked out I will, but if it might be just a setting somewhere I'm missing, I'd rather deal with that.
    Thanks

Thanks for all the help I have received from everyone out there in cyberlandia, like it was alot.
I solved my problem on my own and what a feeling. I tweaked the IPv4 settings by ending the numbers in an even number instead of an odd number (.172, .174 ,.176 etc). Sort of stumbled onto this but it worked as my download speeds were 6kbps when I started and went up to 750 kbps shortly afterwards. I am in South America and our internet connections are slow compared to the States. Wish I could get a 5 meg download speed but that is not going to happen. 750kbps (@ $90 per month) is a joy compared to the dial up I had.

  • Slow Download/Good Upload?

The trouble started this morning. Web pages take a long time to open. So, I did a broadband speed test at http://www.speedtest.net/ to find that the download speed is around 700 kbps while the upload speed is about 250 kbps. I am using a 8mbps broadband connection. My MacBook is (3.1 / Core 2 Duo / 2.2 GHz / 4GB RAM / running 10.5.1 leopard).
The strange thing is this is not the case with my wife's MacBook (1.1 / Core Duo 2.0 GHz / 2GB RAM / running 10.5.1 Leopard). This Mac registrest about 8500 kbps download speed and 650 kbps upload speed.
We are connecting to the same Wireless router, with WAP2 and "g" standard.
    What could be the problem?
Tried deleting the folder Caches in /System/Library/Extensions
Tired deleting all .plist files that start with com.apple.internet...
    Removed WiFind
    Reset Safari
    Zapped PRAM
    Tried with another user account
Turned the Wireless router on and off
Haven't had problems sharing files wirelessly between the Mac or playing musing from iTunes to the stere with AirPort Express Base Station, which is connected to the same network.
Any advice to fix this would be much appreciate...

To give an update, I also tried making a Safe Boot. Still same.
In fact, I did a check on the file transfer between the two Macs.
Haven't had problems playing music from iTunes to the stereo with AirPort Express Base Station, which is connected to the same network. However, I sense that transferring files to the other Mac wirelessly is faster compared to transferring the same sized file from the other Mac to this one.
Any advice? Could it be a problem with the AirPort Extreme card? If so, how do I find out?

  • Very slow download speeds on imac but macbook is fine, why?

    Hi
After moving house it seems my imac does not want to download anything very fast. I have tried internet speed tests on speedtest.net on both my imac and my mac book. my macbook recorded 14.79 down and 1.25 up and on my imac the same test recorded 0.20 down and 1.05 up. Both computers are connected via WiFi and I am running version 10.6.8 on both computers. Can anyone help?

Probably not anything to do with your Mac. Apple's servers are notoriously slow. I can never get more than about 1.4 MB/sec, even though I can routinely test at over 3 MBps. This is from Saturday.

  • Slow download and upload speed through vpn+samba

I`m connecting to Lenovo  EMC PX12-450r through a vpn connection. The upload and the download speed are maximum 350kb/s. If i connect through the same vpn and copy files to another samba server within the same network the speeds are ok. Are there any settings that i`m missing?
Laptop - VPN Client - SonicWall - Lenovo EMC PX12-450r = low speeds
Laptop - VPN Client - SonicWall - Windows with writeable file sharing = speeds OK
Laptop - VPN Client - SonicWall - Linux with samba writeable directory = speeds OK

    Hello darkmac
If the unit's local Samba transfer speeds seem normal, then the issue would most likely be on the VPN server or your firewall settings.
From the device end you would want to double check that you have the correct DNS, gateway, vlan, etc configurations
If the unit's Samba transfer speeds seem to be slow locally as well I recommend cycling the Samba (windows file sharing/cifs) protocol in the web interface to see if that corrects the issue.
Another item to check into is if the Media server features is enabled.  It can cause noticable performance drops to other protocols when enabled.

  • Stupid slow downloads and uploads

    Help please
Right now I am uploading a file using Fetch. The average speed is 342 bytes/s (no K here, just bytes). That's an hour and a half for a 1.3mb file. It takes 15 seconds to one minute everytime I click on a link on this site. I keep iStat on my desk so I can keep track of my lack of speed. Usually when browsing download average is about 5Kb/s. Exceptions are when I do speed tests ( Verizon 12 KB/s DSL reports 172Kb/s now) and my iStat jumps up to over 100 KB/s momentarily. Keep in mind that I am doing all of this at 3am est -- not exactly prime time. The other thing is that if I use Limewire to download (legal) files, it will maintain over 100 KB/s for an extended period. I have also tried all of the Verizon stuff -- shut down everything for 2 minutes then start the router then computer, no help. This is a new Intel iMac, no firewall, 10.4.10 wired to the DSL router, no firewall, on Verizon 768 mb service. I tried pinging Apple.com (from Florida_ and the range was from 106 ms to 279 ms
Any ideas? this has gotten noticably worse over the past week or 2

check the DNS settings on this DSL router, if you can get to the admin panel.
check the DNS settings in your mac.
find openDNS website, use their numbers, see if this helps.
Go into SysPrefs>Sharing>firewall>Advanced...make sure there are no checks ticked there.
Instead of pinging, use "Traceroute" (use apple.com again) in NetworkUtility, and see if you can tell where it looks like things 'slow down', if you can.
Then repeat that test using IP address 17.254.3.183
Not sure what might have happened in the past week or two, but something [sounds like it] did.

  • Slow Download and Upload speeds ADSL1

For weeks now my internet has been slow. When I tried to downlaod an update to my GPS with and estimated time of 2hours 32 minutes, I blew my stack when the time was shown to be over 300 hours. Ran Speedtest and I get 0.7Mbps at best, often less than that. Tried the chat facility and it timed out while chatting to Hazel because the download stopped altogether. SO I telephoned (surprised something from Telstra actually worked) and logged a complaint. The chap said someone would call me with 18 hours. Well, you can guess. What am I to do? Telstra has the infrastructure here and I feel trapped: they do not call me and I have no alternative. Any suggestions?

    Hi dmacster,
I apologise for any inconvenience or frustration this may have caused you. Please speak to technical support team with your complaint number and we can check on the complaint status for you.

  • IPad air has slow download when mirroring with Apple tv

my iPad Air freezes and is virtually not watchable when mirroring with my Apple tv. I can watch any programmes on my iPad without any problem but as soon as I try to mirror, the speed seems so slow and it freezes. I have reset my iPad and also my Apple tv. If I do a speed test without the mirroring, I get around 20-29. A speed test with mirroring is less than 1. Apple support go around in circles and cannot resolve my issue. Can anyone else help?

Re-starting the iPad and Apple TV only works for 4 or 5 more connections, it then fails to mirror yet again, the sound is OK! just the screen goes blank and the iPad slows up...tried everything!...this only began to happen since the IOS7 upgrade, we are now at IOS 7.0.4 and Apple has still not fixed this problem...surely I can' tube the only user having this problem...

    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
You might try measuring the signal and noise levels that each Mac sees using these instructions:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2347845&start=1
One possible explanation might be that your Mac has a metal case while the other may have a plastic case.
