Slow downstream in the evenings

Hi, after initially getting constant 37mb down and 8 mb upload since moving over to infinity in mid April, it appears that now i am lucky if my download speed is over 10 meg in the evenings or at night. In the day its full 37 still. I have reset both boxes, and connect via ethernet and as stated, only seems to be capped in the evenings or weekend. I am on the unlimited option and have just done a test at speedtest.net and am getting 6mb download and 8 upload. another test on a different server gave me 11mb, last night it was showing as 10mb download. If someone could take a look into this for me it would be appreciated.

I had a similar issue with my BT Infinity 2 package Downstream is a solid 74 Mbps but would drop every evenign at 8 or 9pm to 20 Mbps or so. This was way out of my contracted line profile of 76 to 40Mbps Downstream and had been going on for months. The Upstream bandwdth was never affected: 18Mbps
Fortunately I have been participating in the SamKnows (www.samknows.com) ISP monitoring project for the past couple of years, even when I had ADSL. This provides a "whitebox", a TP Link router that works in bridging mode, has customised firmware and carries out a whole load of tests on your broadband connection at regular intervals 24/7 and gives you personalised analytics portal in whic you can view the data and download reports etc. BT actually participartes in this project itself.
So armed with lots of data to illustrate this issue I contacted BT Support vai a chat. Short story is they claimed not to be able to read CSV, PDF or JPEG files of the data which is just a load of nonsense and started the usual script of wanting me to use the BT Wholesale speedtest.
To cut a long story short I kept insisting that they escalate the issue to 2nd level otherwise I would treat them as being in breach of contract and move both my Broadband and Landline to another provider - Zen Internet are the best by far.
After a week of excahanging emails - I eventually just pasted the data inline in my email messages :-) - the issue was magically resolved and my line now stays within its profile at all times. In fact it has not dropped below 58Mbps Downstream since this fix was put in place. Of course no explanation of the what had been the issue was given as is usual.
I would strongly suggest that you join the SamKNows project. There is no cost and it provides losts of detailed data on your line for when you contact BT support.

  • Painfully slow broadband in the evenings

Hi could someone please let me know why it would appear that my unlimited broadband connection is being throttled by BT in the evenings?
I was told that I would have up to a 6mbps connection when I moved house and took out a new contract with BT a couple of months ago, to find that I only actually got a 2.5mbps connection.  I wasn't too bothered about that, as 2.5mbps was fast enough for most things that I want.
Recently however I am getting 0.5 to 0.7mbps in the evenings until about midnight, when it goes back up to 2.5mbps (ish).  Granted it's a slow connection anyway, but 0.5mbps is unusable, it takes an age for a simple web page to load let alone the bbc iplayer, youtube, etc.  And if i try and work on remote servers at work in the evening it is TOTALLY unusable.
I have been a BT broadband customer for about 10 years now and I am very dissapointed to be treated like this.
Please could someone offer an explanation or some guidance on how to get this resolved?

Thanks for the reply.  Bt Speedtester gave a result of 0.74mb.

  • Very slow in the evenings

    Hello,
I live in E15 area (London-Stratford) and my BT Infinity was installed a month ago. Initially it was fine but for the last two weeks we observed that the Internet slows down practically to zero in the evenings. Sometimes web pages don't even open. We have two computers at home and a few other devices (like an iPhone and kindle). So altogether 4 devices are connected at the same time but it should be normal. And when I use the Internet at 6 - 7 pm it is still OK, the biggest problems are between 9 - 11 pm. It is just unbearable because we went for the most expensive option and have nothing out of it.
Hope we can cancel the contract with BT if we prove that the service does not work. But I would prefer the service to work. How is it that a company like BT manages to make a customer angry so quickly? It seems that it is in my and other user's interest to discourage as many people as possible from using BT so that there is more bandwidth for us, but it really shouldn't be that way. So far I am frustrated with the service I get.
Is there any way of gathering the evidence of the speed I get at different times so that I can quantify that I don't get the service I pay for? Is there any guaranteed quality of service that I should get? I am really thinking about cancelling the contract as soon as it is possible.

    Hi there,
First off, do a speed test at the bt speedtest site when you are experiencing speed issues and post the screenshot here, so we can see what speeds you're getting through the BT speedtest, as opposed to an external speedtester site, such as speedtest.net.
The reason for this is we need to see which profile you're on, as each profile (if I remember correctly) has a minuimum speed which the service can drop to, before it is considered to be a fault.
With regard to cancelling your contract, unfortunately that's a no-go. You're tied in to an 18 month contract from the moment that the service is installed; there is no cancellation/cooling off period. As far as I am aware, you'd have to buy yourself out of the contract by paying for the remaining contracted months.
    I hope this info helps.

  • Slow speeds for the past 2 weeks

For the past 2 weeks I have been having very slow speeds. At first I thought it was the westell modem which kept powering down, rebooting every 30+ mins or would save the network settings. Purchase a new modem still have the slow speed minus the constant reboots and loss of settings.
Any chance to get my speeds up to what Iam currently paying for?
    Package: 1.5-3Mbps
Speed tests form diffrent sites 0.399Mbps to 0.412 Mbps
    Former modem: Westell 327W A90-327W15-06
    Current modem: Actiontec GT784WN
    Downstream Speed: 480 Kbps
    Upstream Speed: 448 Kbps
SNR Downstream : 6 dB SNR Upstream : 10 dB
    Attenuation Downstream : 63 dB
    Attenuation Upstream : 31 dB
    Power Downstream 14.3 dBm Power
    Upstream 11.9 dBm

Your line isn't in a very good shape to be running on the 1.5Mbps-3Mbps package. As it stands, you barely have enough capacity to support even 1/3 of the 1.5Mbps provisioning. There's simply too much noise.
What you should do first is take one of your modems out to your NID, if you have access to one and plug it into the test jack found inside of the NID. If there is a telephone plug already inserted into it, remove it to gain access to the jack (this will disconnect your home's wiring until you reconnect it). From there, sync up the modem and post up the new Transceiver Statistics you obtain.
Have your speeds been at 1.5-3Mbps in the past? That would also help us. Lastly, if you have Voice Service with Verizon, do you have any noise on your line, such as humming, buzzing, loud static or popping?

  • Very slow downstream + Connection dropout.

    Hello everyone,
I hope I am posting in the right forum, as I urgently need some help with this problem.
I am trying to solve a problem on behalf of one of my relatives since I am the admin of their network. Recently their connection has been experiencing a very, very slow downstream speed. I believe, (but not sure) they're with Option 3 unsure of their speed, but previous tests have given somewhere in the range of 5-6Mb. They have the original BT HomeHub. I've performed tests this end, and I have run out of ideas, so any help would be good.
It seems the router keeps re-syncing with the DSLAM every few hours, connection time never surpassed 1 day. The internet is so slow here that I am almost unable to load a web page, to me it seems that the traffic has been severely throttled. I am unable to run the test at speedtester.bt.com because it gets stuck at checking user details, slow connection?
I ran a test over at speedtest.net that took nearly 5 mins for the page to load and got the following results:
    Ping: 145 ms
    Download: 0.13Mbps
    Upload: 0.23Mbps
The DSL Connection page on the hub reads the following: (Some information is omitted)
    Uptime: 0 days, 14:12:15
    Bandwidth: U/D 320/992 [kbps]
    Output Power: U/D 12.0/18.0 [dBm]
    Line Att: U/D 31.5/43.0 [dB]
    SN Margin: U/D 06/15.0 [dB]
    LoF: L/R 0/0
    LoS: L/R 95/0
    LoP: L/R 0/0
    LoL: R 0
    Err Secs: L/R 121/0
So as you can see the downstream bandwidth is very low, which makes even loading this forum very slow. The Hub is connected to an Telephone extension cable, to rule out any issues on the cable and connections, I have directly connected the Hub to the telephone socket with no improvement in speed.
As a side note, apparently they exceeded their bandwidth at the beginning of the month so, only other guess is that their bandwidth is being limited due to exceeding their download limit, but that doesn't account for why their Hub keeps dropping its connection daily.
Any help provided would be greatly appreciated.
    Kindest Regards

Still connected to the test socket.  Ran the quiet line test and held the line for about 20mins, noticed loud but intermittent crackle, tried with another handset, same result.
Contacted BT, they ran a line test, noticed poor SNR. Ran test at speedtester.bt.com with low throughput result. Chap on the end of the phone said (called via mobile) that speeds should be up to normal in the next 24hours. If no improvement after 10 days call back and they will send a tech out.
In a passing conversation with my relative, the last time they had crackle on the line was due to sevear corrosion of the telephone line entering the house at the outside junction box on the wall, and resulted in them cutting a whole length of cable off for rewire. If its corrosion again, then that would explain the poor SNR and a technician will be required to look at the box again.
I re-flashed the FW of the Hub, with its original FW, defaulted settings and that made no improvement. So guessing that the issue is certainly with the line, more likely at the circuit termination at the entry point to the property.

Hi,  from the last two days my iphone( iphone 4 with ios 5) have very slow to open the apps and very slow when i check the notification window , it taking too much time to open when i tap to down . help me to resolve the issue.

    The Basic Troubleshooting Steps are:
    Restart... Reset... Restore...
    iPhone Reset
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430
Try this First... You will Not Lose Any Data...
    Turn the Phone Off...
Press and Hold the Sleep/Wake Button and the Home Button at the Same Time...
Wait for the Apple logo to Appear and then Disappear...
Usually takes about 15 - 20 Seconds... ( But can take Longer...)
    Release the Buttons...
    Turn the Phone On...
If that does not help... See Here:

  • Macbook Pro is slow, freezing all the time and has Wi-Fi problems

    Hello!
My Macbook Pro started acting kinda strange a couple of weeks ago. It's slow, freezing all the time and constantly connecting and reconnecting to the Wi-Fi network after around half a minute of usage.
Here is the story, as far as I know:
In the start of 2014, pup-up boxes started popping up on my Macbook Pro. They said that I had to enter a password for the Keychain to gain access to a service or something. The odd thing about it was that I had never set up my iCloud Keychain. It just started appearing without me knowing why. Unfortunately, I didn't know the password for this due to the fact that I never set it up. I tried every password combination that could possibly work, but I didn't get through it. I tried different solutions, but nothing worked out. I solved it by simply making a new user account on my Mac. I used this for like 1 month before the whole Mac with all its user started messing itself up.
It might be worth to notice that this secondary-user didn't require a password to log in, so when I closed my Macbook and re-opened it, it would continue where it was left off. This might have been the reason for the Mac sometimes to get really warm while being in my backpack, which might also have caused the problem. I am not sure though.
After using the secondary user for a while, the Mac started acting strange again. This time it was something different. One day, my girlfriend started up my Macbook Pro and noticed that it was extremely slow. I assumed it was just in the need of a restart, but that wasn't it. The computer started freezing all the time at first. It froze when I clicked something in an application, and I had to wait like 10 seconds for it to go back to normal. If I was typing anything on Facebook, it would freeze, but I could still use any other tab of the browser without any problems. However, they would freeze to if I did anything special on other websites. Every other program would also freeze for reasons like typing or clicking on anything.
After a short while, it started being really slow during startup and use. A few days ago, my Macbook Pro also started disconnecting from Wi-Fi networks while trying to load pages. It doesn't disconnect every time, but it does sometimes. It tries to reconnect after that, and if it succeed's, everything is back to normal for a while.
Additionaly, the battery have been draining faster, and when it reached 0%, the computer turned off and closed all the open programs. Normally it has entered Sleep Mode, but not anymore.
Do any of you have any clue what the issue might be?
    I have done the following:
    - Reset PRAM
    - Restore to system defaults
    - Installed AVG Antivirus and scanned it
    - Repaired and verified disk in Disk Utility.
    - Uninstalled Adobe Flash Player.
I hope anyone can help me! I really need my computer for educational use!

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the request of a stranger on a public message board. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed: Copy a line of text from this web page into the window of another application. Wait for the script to run. It usually takes a few minutes. Then paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
    PATH=/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin; clear; Fb='%s\n\t(%s)\n'; Fm='\n%s\n\n%s\n'; Fr='\nRAM details\n%s\n'; Fs='\n%s: %s\n'; Fu='user %s%%, system %s%%'; AC="com.autodesk.AutoCAD  com.google.GoogleDrive"; H='^[[:space:]]*((127\.0\.0\.1|::1|fe80::1%lo0)[[:space:]]+local|(255\.){3}255[[:space:]]*broadcast)host[[:space:]]*$'; NS=networksetup; PB="/usr/libexec/PlistBuddy -c Print"; A () { [[ a -eq 0 ]]; }; M () { find -L "$d" -type f | while read f; do file -b "$f" | egrep -lq XML\|exec && echo $f; done; }; AT () { o=`file -b "$1" | egrep -v '^(A.{16}t$|cann)'`; Ps "${1##*/} format"; }; Pc () { o=`grep -v '^ *#' "$2"`; l=`wc -l <<< "$o"`; [[ l -gt 25 ]] && o=`head -n25 <<< "$o"`$'\n'"[$((l-25)) more line(s)]"; Pm "$1"; AT "$1"; }; Pm () { [[ "$o" ]] && o=`sed -E '/^ *$/d;s/^ */   /;s/[-0-9A-Fa-f]{22,}/UUID/g;s/(ochat)\.[^.]+(\..+)/\1\2/;/U.+\/Shared\//b'$'\n''s/(\/Users\/)[^/]+/\1USER/g' <<< "$o"` && printf "$Fm" "$1" "$o"; }; Pp () { o=`$PB "$2" | awk -F'= ' \/$3'/{print $2}'`; Pm "$1"; }; Ps () { o=`echo $o`; [[ !     Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • CS5 slow to get the 'open' and 'save' dialog box over networked computer.

I have been having this problem since the suite was installed, but recently has gotten much slower. Any time I click open or save it takes 8-10 seconds just for the dialog box to come up.  CS1 was lightening fast - I know that was ages ago, but I can't help compare the two.  I have the same problem with InDesign and Illustrator. The suite is running on a Windows 7 machine through a home network, accessing files from an XP machine as well as a Buffalo Linkstation.  Once the dialog box comes up, and I double click, the file is pretty quick to appear.  I have researched online and I believe the problem to be somewhere in the network or the settings.  The network is quick, Windows Explorer has no delay in opening or finding files, nor do other programs outside of Creative Suite. I did an experiment to narrow down the problem - I closed Photoshop, unplugged the network cable, and reopened the program.  AMAZING - it was SO FAST to open the dialog box for both opening and saving files!  I then closed Photoshop again, plugged the network cable back in, and opened Photoshop.  It was back to the slow opening of the dialog box.  Everything else in the programs runs fine - no delay when performing operations in any of the Creative Suite - it has to do with the network and how CS is looking for the files.  Can anyone help me, I am so frustrated - this is adding unnecessary time to everything I do and I dread opening and saving any files!!

    Once again - thank you!
We used to have a network storage device attached to our home network, but it crashed and we replaced it with another model.  A while back I had added it as an item to display in the places bar.  When we removed it from the network, the link on the left side disapeared, so I forgot all about it.  When I read your posting it jogged my memory.  I searched the subject to remember how I had made the change and found this posting from Adobe Community: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/795196 (its in #6).  I found the original storage device in the places bar, removed it and replaced it with the new device.  I opened Photoshop and Acrobat and both open and save dialog boxes appear as they should - the problem has been resolved!  THANK YOU!

Since loading Lion, I've experienced much more instability than Snow Leopard. In particular, Mail crashes with regularity, full-screen apps seem to run slower and show the beach ball more often for longer, etc. I love the features, but I'm disappointed with the performance. Any help coming from Apple?  I've been sending them so many reports after crashes, that their file must be full!

Summoning max. courage, I did what you advised. Here is the result. What does this tell you? My Lion 7.2 (mid 2011 iMac) has several annoying glitches (which I have so far tolerated through gritted teeth) but none that have actually stopped me working.
BTW, I see several items involving CleanMyMac which I did not know I had. It is generally villified as a trouble-maker. Spotlight can't find an app. or a utility of that name. How can I get rid of what's there please? Just delete?

  • HT5730 After I installed 10.8.48.4 Internet browsing slowed down to the pace of a dial-up connection.  How can I get back to normal operating speed?

After I installed 10.8.4, my Internet browsing slowed down to the pace of a dial-up connection -- unless it froze up completely.  How do I get my system back to a normal operating mode?  Can I dump 10.8.4 and go back to the one that at least worked?

Please answer as many of the following questions as you can. You may already have answered some of them.
    1. Have you restarted your router and broadband modem since you first noticed the problem? If the answer is no, do that now and see whether there's any change.
    2. Are any other web browsers installed, and are they also slow?
    3. What about other Internet applications, such as iTunes and the App Store?
    4. Are there any other devices on the same network that can browse the Web, and are they also slow?
    5. If you can test Safari on another network, is it slow there too?
    6. If you connect to your router with Wi-Fi and you can also connect with Ethernet, do that and turn off Wi-Fi. Any difference?

  • Forms 10g App. is slow: What is the official procedure to follow?

Hello Forms gurus. This question has been bugging me for some time. Here is the scenario.
We have a Telco application developed using Forms 10g.
A user complains that his form is slow.
We have access to the live DB (assume it is a 10g DB).
However, we cannot run the form in the live DB. We have no access to it. We only have access to the live DB.
What is the "procedure" to follow in a situation like this???
Is there an Oracle Recommended procedure to follow?
You inputs will be greatly appreciated.

Are you sure the database is the cause of your performance problems? Can you identify slow queries? The first thing you should investigate is *where* your problem relies. Ask your DBAs if they can tell you the bad performing queries or help you analyze if there are any. If the database behaves well then most certainly it isn't the culprit of your performance problem. Of course there are some other no-gos which might affect application performance (like slow-by-slow processing, or serializing, or what ever else). So you need to identify where the time is spent first.
So, according to the them, if a form is "slow", 99.99% it is caused by a slow query.  So, they expect us developers to know tuning stuff.
Erm...and who else should know it? Developers design the application, developers know how it should work, and therefore are the ones who should know how to tune it. And I'm not talking about looking into why the Hard disk responds slow kind of stuff but simple identifying sub-optimal code, or SQL tuning by looking at the execution plans, interpreting them and solving them by...oh, I don't know, rewriting the query, minimizing recursive SQL, and what ever else. DBAs on the other hand know next to nothing about your application. How should they know if a query plan is bad or not (except the query responds slow)? How should they know how to rewrite your query properly if they don't know what it's supposed to do? Don't write a query whatever way you like and expect them to understand it and tune it which might even imply changes on your underlying data model.
    There are 2 scenarios:
(1.) We got e-mail from user saying form is slow. But he is not using the form now.
-- Is there a way to find out slow queries that happened say few days ago? Are they stored somewhere?
(2.) User is currently logged on to the system and using the form.
-- Can you find out an slow query happening right now??
1.) This would be AWR. As they have the final saying about the database then ask them to provide you a AWR report of a Time period where you had performance problems. If you don't have AWR then it'll be somehow difficult to analyze performance problems of the past. But on the other hand I wouldn't worry too much if you can constantly reproduce your problems as this would take us straight foreward to:
2.) That would be SQL Trace. Simply trace the session experiencing performance problems, and run tkprof on the tracefile. If you don't know how to do that and don't know how to interpret a query plan then you might ask your DBAs if they can assist you. If they insist that you must know that on your own maybe ask them to teach you. It is one thing to ask someone to do your job, but an entirely other thing to ask someone for help to do your job better and share some knowledge.
In the end it'll be easier to work *with* your DBAs to identify and solve performance problems and not working *against* them. You have knowledge about your application, about what data is stored where and why but might lack some basic knowledge about SQL Tuning. Your DBA on the other hand has no knowledge about your application but might have a better understanding of basic SQL tuning. IMHO the both of you would make a good couple to solve SQL performance problems as your knowledge combined should make it easy to resolve your problem.
    cheers

No magical keystroke remedy. The causes for this can be complicated.

When using tethered capture I often get this notification "The metadata for this photo has been changed by both Lightroom and another application". This slows or stalls the loading of incoming photos. How do I find out which other application is changing the metadata and stop it?

    Thanks Sean,
I've had a look at the TC settings dialog and tried to keep it as simple as possible. I also had a copy of LR 4 on the hard drive so have trashed that also incase of any conflicts. LR seems to be running ok now but as said it's an intermittent problem.
I also have a copy of Capture One on the hard drive so am going to uninstall that also in case it is trying to launch.
