Slow DSL - can I upgrade?

I have 3 meg DSL which is less than 1 meg in the evenings.  Can I upgrade to 7 meg service?   Would that get me more than 1 meg in the evenings?   Would dial-up be faster than 1 meg?   Does Verizon have cable?  What alternative can Verizon offer me so I have more than 1 meg in the evenings?

The issue with seeing 1Mbps at night and a speed upgrade are two separate questions, since they both involve separate methods of figuring out. In the case of the 1Mbps issue, what you're seeing is probably prime-time slowdown. Verizon will need to move you to less congested equipment and circuits, if any exists so that you can obtain the speed you're supposed to be getting on the connection. I would suggest the Verizon Direct forum over at DSLReports.com for this since they tend to be good at handling such requests. Mention the phrase "Night Time congestion" while you are telling them what is going on and they should do what they need to do to solve your issue. Failing that, contact me and I'll get you in contact with someone who will square away this issue.
As for the speed upgrade, we need to see the Transceiver Statistics from your modem to ensure the line will even support a higher speed, since you'll make bigger problems trying to get a higher speed if it cannot support it. If you don't know how to obtain this information, please tell us what modem you currently have and we'll help you get them. If the statistics look good, the second step of this would be to ask Verizon what is available. If you can get a higher speed, then by all means if you wish to order it, order it. Otherwise, leave things alone. If they say no to a higher speed, this could be from a few reasons, either there being a lack of capacity for the higher speeds, you are on a remote, or the CO has not been approved to handle a higher speed, or even an issue with their database.
As far as Cable goes, the closest thing Verizon sells to Cable is FiOS. FiOS, by nature is vastly superior to any copper-based network in regards to capacity, so unless you can get that, you're out of luck in this aspect I'm afraid! Dial-up is 48.8kbps/1000kbps so unfortunately a congested DSL line is still faster than the fastest dial-up connection you could possibly get. A higher speed package will also not get you higher speeds during the night. It will most likely show when the congestion occurs sooner, though.

    I'm having difficulty navigating through the plethora of Verizon www presentations and pages.  I have a somewhat simple question.  I have all my services except TV through Verizon and now may consider incrreasing my DSL speed, but only if it is a modest increase in cost.  Right now, I have:
    landline service = $50
    slow (750 kb) DSL = $17
    cell-phone service = $40
    for a monthly service charge of about $118
    We changed residences a couple of years ago and a service rep said that I could increase my internet speed for a discount by bundling my services.  I declined after getting an affirmative answer to my question of whether my total bill would be higher.
    I'm a computer geek but don't see a substantial difference in speed from my work computer at ~ 10 MB to my home computer at 750 kb for what I use the computer for.  But this week I installed a Roku box at home that enables streaming video and I am limited by the slow speed (support says that I need at least 1.2 MB).  I'm consideering sending the box back (30-day free trial) since as far as I can tell increasing my internet speed will cost at least $10/month and we don't watch enough movies to justify the monthly charge.  I may just so pay-per-view on TV or subscribe to Netflix.  The line describing my bundling savings is below.

    Thanks for the tip.  I just had the same experience.  I was about to assume that my slow DSL was as good as I could get without additional charges.  After reading your experience I checked deeper into the Verizon www site and found a page that mentioned savings by bundling services.  Checked into it and found that by simply bundling my land line and DSL I could save $20/month which coincidentally is the cost of upgrading from ~750kb to 3MB.  I did an on-line chat with one of the service reps to be sure there were no hidden charges and/or that this was an introductory offer that expired after a few months, and got in writing (cut/pasted our conversation to a Word document) that it was legit as advertized.  So I've now switched.
    I complained about being eligible for these savings for years but never was informed of it, and their response of course is that it's up to me to find out what I'm eligible for.
    As an aside - this is similar to what happened with my Dish satellite service.  A few months ago I found that I was paying double for part of my service for years.  I complained and they refunded my fee for the month due but not back months.  I claimed that the mistake was theirs and that I  was due to as far back as their records show.  They claimed that it is incumbant on me to check my billl every month.
    I guess the take-home message in both of these situations is that you can't assume that the company is looking into your best interest/savings.
    Anyway - thanks for your post.  Without it I probably would have continued under false assumptions.

    I forgot to mention earlier: if you find that on-screen typing is very slow to register  then you might try logging out of iCloud and iTunes and the App Store in Settings/iCloud/[Delete Account] and Settings/iTunes and App Store/Apple ID [Sign Out]. Then reset the phone (press sleep/wake and home buttons together and hold until Apple logo appears), and then log back into iCloud and iTunes and the App Store in Settings again.

  • Super Slow DSL Speeds

    I have been without internet for a week.  Verizon finally fixed the problem yesterday afternoon and my internet service was restored but now I have super slow DSL speeds.  0.36 dowload & 0.54upload.
    I am tired of calling tech support and being told to reboot my computer, modem, yadda yadda.  There is something else going on here and need to figure out if it is with the modem itself or the line.  All the line tests the tech support people have done come back normal.
    The modem is reporting the OAM ping test as failing in Far End F4 Loop Back Count & Near End F4 Loop Back Count.  No idea what that means.....
    The speed from the modem itself is listed as: 
    Speed(Down/Up):
    416 / 640 Kbps
    I've done ipconfig flush dns, ipconfig release, ipconfig renew, etc etc.  In home agent is reporting a problem with the dsl signal and just instructs me to reset the modem which does not help. 
    The modem is old, GT704WG from verizon.  I am thinking about going out and buying a new one but don't want to do that if it is not going to fix the problem.  It just seems odd that last week internet speed was fine and now it is slow as hell.
    I had no internet or phone this week which they are claiming it was due to a line being pinched when my house was re-stuccod in December(granted internet and phone worked fine up until last Sunday).  Verizon went under the house and fixed the line, phone & internet came back on.  When I logged onto the browser I was prompted to activate my verizon service( I guess because it had been out for a week).  Did that, got onto websites but connection is extermely slow and I am at my wits end.
    I've spent more time on the phone this week with the unhelpful verizon people then I spend all year talking to my relatives and I really don't want to call them back and sit on the phone for another 45 min to an hour. 
    Anything I can do to diagnose and possibly fix this?

    This past week when I had a "repair" scheduled, I was told they would be out on wednesday to fix our problem.  No time frame was given for when this repair would take place.  My retired father waited at the house the entire day only to have the repair man show up at 4:30pm who told us it was too late in the day to wait 5 min for us to move some boxes out of the closet that were over our crawl space so he could go under the house and fix the damaged wire.  Instead he ran a long phone line from our box to our kitchen phone, told us this was a temporary solution and that if we called the repair center in the morning someone would come out in the morning and fix it.
    We called in the morning, only again to be given no time frame for the repair.  My father again waited all day, this time no one showed up.  Even after he called 3 x's that day trying to get information on when the tech would be there....
    Finally on Friday after spending another entire day waiting for a repair man did one show up around 3 in the afternoon one did, he went under the house and fixed the wire and our phone service was finally restored after 4 days.  The dsl finally came back on albeit at a super slow speed as I am experiencing now.
    Right now I am currently calling around to get rate quotes from other providers for our phone, internet, tv, & wireless.  My experience with your "customer support" has soured me to verizon even though I have been with you guys for 10 plus years.  I don't want to spend one more day waiting for  repair man who may or may not show up.  I don't want to spend another hour to hour and a half on the phone with some man in India who is just going to ask me to reboot my pc and modem over and over again and run a "line test" which is the same thing your automated phone service asks you to do as well. 
    Your company just doesn't get it when it comes to customer service.  I pay my bill every month on time and in the 10 plus years I've been with you this is one of three times I've called for support.  Each time I've had a horrible experience and the only thing that has kept me with you is that most of the time the service works as it should.  I have heard FIOS is relatively trouble free, at least in my neighborhood, which is the only reason I am still considering the upgrade but if I do find a more reasonable deal with a company that has a better record for customer service I will be cancelling my order.  I have a few weeks left to decide.  It's unfortunate too because there are some nice folks that work at verizon but your company philosophy towards customer service has changed the bigger you've gottena and you've lost touch with what your customer's need from you.

  • I've had it with slow DSL

    Today I don't have email--I can't send or receive to my home computer.  Things are working fine from the Verizon internet mail site.  I've been a Verizon customer for over 12 years and the DSL speed is horrible--barely get 1.1 mbps downloading. 
    No Fios here and they don't offer anything faster than the "Enhanced" plan which is pathetically slow.  So I'm going to try cable out and dump Verizon.  I have an AT&T cell plan and never use my landline.
    Verizon just doesn't offer modern service and they don't seem to care.  And I live in Los Angeles County!  Calls over the years to service have never fixed the speed issue and I never get the performance that I'm paying for.  Enhanced is supposed to be up to 3.0 mbps but I've NEVER seen speeds even remotely near that.
    I've waited for years for Verizon to upgrade the old phone lines here.  Well I'm finished waiting.  I'll try cable since even slow cable should be better than this SLOW DSL.

    I'm in Baltimore and there is no Fios.  Talk about sick of the slow DSL.  That's an understatement.  I am stuck with using my Smartphone to connect to the internet.  So much so.. that in a few days I've used the data plan I have up to 95%.  I am sick of Verizon.  
    Last month, in order to get on the internet, I ran out of data on my smartphone.  I'm going to switch to Sprint, give up my contract with Verizon, cancel the DSL, and just use my phone to get online.

    Graphics card no; not possible at all. Hard drive; yes but only by 40% to 1 TB and as a practical matter only 750gb drives currently have good performance. 1TB drives are big but slow.

  • Can't upgrade past 10.6.8 - how do I get the best out of my mac?

    Hi everyone,
    This is my first ever time posting in this community since purchasing my Mac in 2008, it's been that good!
    My problem is that I currently live in Peru (from Australia). Macs are ridiculously over-priced here in this country and because I live on savings, upgrading at this time is not going to happen. I'm building a website for my business and because Safari 5 is so out of date, it's not showing the site properly when I make changes (using wordpress). In addition, my computer is very slow and I have regular meetings with the spinning ball of death.
    I've tried to clear out as much junk from the computer as I can to speed it up and I am now looking at installing Firefox because of the Safari issues, which is going to just add more bloat to an already sluggish system.
    I ran an EtreCheck on my system and I'm hoping one of the good people in the Mac community may be able to tell me if there are any glaring issues/viruses etc that stand out which could be causing me any problems? I've done as much as I can within my limited knowledge of soft and hardware Heregoes...Thank you in advance!

    Upgrading to Lion
    If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
    You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.

  • How can I upgrade from Infinity to 56K dial-up?

    I have had Infinity for about a month. At first everything was great, 38Mbps. I am about 25m from the cabinet where the optical fibre is terminated so I expected this to be quite consistent.
    Seven days ago the speed dropped to about 5Mbps and over the next 12 hours or so dropped even further. The last time I managed to get a download speed measurement I recorded a speed of 28.2Kbps (yes, that is Kilobits). I have not had a speed as low as that in almost 20 years. Currently the BT speed tester is not working, I suspect my speed is too slow for it. The BBC speed tester reports my speed as being 0Mbps.
    I have called the BT help line every day since and have been told today that it has finally been escalated to the BT Openreach Engineering Dept. I am told that an engineer will visit me in 3 days time to fix the problem. Why has it taken a week to do this and why can somebody not do something quicker? Is BT Infinity so bad that all the engineers are running around trying to get it to work. People always go on about Microsoft getting customers to test their products, I think BT are doing the same thing with a product which is obviously not suitable for it's task.
    This is absolutely awful customer service. Seven days for a succession of "support engineers" a few thousand miles away reading from a prepared script is not my idea of looking after customers.
    I cannot express how this has changed my opinion of BT.
    A few years ago I worked for a major supplier of satellite communications equipment. BT were one of our first big customers. We had to jump though so many hoops before we installed the equipment it was unbelievable. The system was tested to death before it entered service. What has happened to this level of quality control?
