Slow/Erratic Wireless Internet Speeds. Have tried a lot. (Multiple Linksys Routers)

I just moved into a new house, and now have a 10mb ADSL connection.
When wired (direct to the modem, or through routers) my speeds are fine.
But when on wireless, they are very erratic. I use a local speedtest site, and when wired it will get up to the correct speed quickly and stay there till test concludes. But on wireless, it will sometimes do that, but 90% of the time it will slowly get up to speed, drop a few Mb's, maybe stay at half speed, maybe go back up, etc....
I have 4 linksys routers (no not all in use currently), 2 WRT54G's, WRT54G2, and a WRT160n.
I have two laptops, one running a Dell 1490 card (Broadcom) and a HP Tablet running a N card (it is broadcom, will have to look up the model). Have tested multiple OS's (XP, Vista, 7).
Nothing seems to make a difference, so problem between all routers. I have tried changing channels to no avail. But other than that, I am not familiar with "fine tuning" as I have never had to in the past.
Any suggestions would be awesome!

Sometimes, firmware make a reat difference...Its a real coincidence that you are facing the wireless connectivity problem with all the 4 router's you have. However you try upgrading your router's firmware and try to reconfigure it from the scratch and hopefully it should work...
Go to website linksysbycisco.com/downloads.........insert model no of your router in serach tab......select proper version of your router........download the firmware file......save that file on desktop
Follow these steps to upgrade the firmware on the device : -
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on a computer hard wired to the router...
In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1...Leave the Username blank & in Password use admin in lower case...
Click on the 'Administration' tab- Then click on the 'Firmware Upgrade' sub tab- Here click on 'Browse' and browse the .bin firmware file and click on "Upgrade"...
Wait for few seconds until it shows that "Upgrade is successful"  After the firmware upgrade, click on "Reboot" and you will be returned back to the same page OR it will say "Page cannot be displayed".
Now reset your router :
Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 30 seconds and re-connect the power cable...Now re-configure your router...

  • Wireless Internet Speed and freezing constantly

Recently I have found my wireless internet speed dramatically slower and at times I find that it in fact won't connect with various webpages - I have had numerous instances that it even fails to connect to google or msn. Now I also own a powerbook and MacPro and I don't notice the lag or the infrequency that I seem to be having with my MacBook Pro. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Last week i received the new MacBook Pro 17" 3.1 and when i connect to my wireless network i've the same problems reported by 24LPS_Films.
    I've this hardware:
    Router Wireless TP-Link model TL-WR642Gv1, firmware 2.10.1 Build 060317 Rel.59202n.
    MacBook Pro 17" 3.1; Airport Extreme (0x168C, 0x87)
The computer is connected to the wireless network, but when browsing or using other internet services the speed is very slow or inexistent.
    I've done some tests:
    - Connected to the internet with the ethernet cable --> ALL OK
    - Connectet to the same wireless router with an external wireless card: Alpha Network AWUS036H --> ALL OK
    - Connected to another computer in lan with the internal wireless card --> ALL OK
    - Connected with the internal wireless card using Windows XP throught BootCamp to the same router --> ALL OK
    - Changed the type of the wireless network to 802.11b, 802.11g, Open, WEP, WPA2-PSK --> NOTHING CHANGED
After that i think that there's a problem in MacOS X with these new cards.

"How do I find that IP address because I put in the 192.168.1.8.."
That's not the router's IP address. Most likely it will be 192.168.1.1
    System Preferences>Network>Advanced>TCP/IP should show it.

I am not aware of a way except for photos that allows you to select multiple files in an email. I even checked settings in the Adobe Reader app, and it does not show that ability.

I am assuming the phone was working prior to you installing IOS 6? Did you use itunes to install IOS 6 or just run from the phone?
When I tried to do the Over The Air update to IOS6 on my iPhone 4, it errored out and I had to connect it to iTunes and select "Restore" from the summary screen after iTunes finds the phone is connected. If this works for you, it will go through a couple of reboots that take a few minutes to complete. It should then give you the option to start with a fresh new phone or to use one of your previous backups to load your contacts and other information, provided you have backed up the phone previously.
I hope this helps you my friend!

  • Why is my second computer's (wireless) internet speed slower than my 'base' computer's (non-wireless)?

My son has a Macbook that  he uses in another room of our house. The router is at my desk, and is wired to my desktop MacMini. Why should his internet speed be slower than mine? Is there a remedy such as switching providers or routers?

According to the manual for the router you said you have, the maximum supported speed is 22 Mbps for 802.11b and 54Mbps for 802.11b/g - since that MacBook supports 802.11a/b/g/n, 54Mbps is the best case scenario if it's negotiating an "g" connection or 22Mbps if it gets a "b" type connection. So what is your internet connection speed? And that 22/54Mbps is best case - depends on how many wall and other obstructions it goes thru by the time it gets to his MacBook.
If he holds down the Option key and clicks on the WiFi icon in the title bar he should see what type of connection his MacBook has negotiated with the router. For example here is what mine shows (the connection type is listed as a 802.11/g, 2.4GHz, 54Mbps, channel 11, 20 MHz, etc):
Another thing to try and make a quick measure of the speed between his MacBook and the local router and your Mini is copy a big file from your computer to his. That will give you a good idea of the speed of his wireless connection to the router.
    Good luck...

  • E3000 has slow Ethernet speed but ok wireless Internet speed

My Cisco E3000 has slowed it's Ethernet speed so slow that it times out when going to Facebook, YouTube or any site that is complex. It worked fine until one day it just gave up. It's connected to DSL Modem with Ethernet To a Apple Mac G5 power PC There are two other older macs connected via Ethernet, same problem. When I took the router out of the chain, and connected G5 directly to modem, normal internet speed. My firmware is up to date. Both wireless bands work great. When I look at Cisco Connect, everything looks normal. factory settings. I worked great then something changed. help me, my kids are revolting.

Yup, check the firewall settings. Since you said firmware is updated, then you may need to reset and reconfigure the router.

  • Wireless Internet Speed

Hi I connected 1 wired and 1 wireless to the internet and all is fine. The wired Pc connected at 100.0Mbps which is fine but my question is only to find out if a wireless connection speed of 11Mbps is normal for a Linksys Wireless-B model BEFW1154 Version 4 with the updated firmware installed. I checked other wireless networks around the house and found most at 54Mbps. I can't tell what type connections they have but mine is a PPPOE DSL. So is 11Mbps normal? Thank you
Message Edited by northernchap on 08-10-2007 06:58 PM

First: the connection speed show is the maximum theoretical speed possible through the connected medium. 100 Mbps wired speed does only mean that you have a wired ethernet connection with 100 Mbps ports on both ends. It does not say anything about the speed you can actually get through this. Even under ideal circumstances you won't get faster speeds then 90 Mbps.
The same applies to wireless speeds although things are worse here because other wireless networks and cordless devices interfere with the connections causing even slower speeds. Your BEFW11S4 is a 802.11b router. The theoretical maximum speed of your router is 11 Mbps. If you have a wireless connection to the router you will only see 11 Mbps connections or slower. As you computer is able to see faster networks around your house it means that your computer has a newer 802.11g or 802.11n card built-in. With 11g the maximum shown connection speed is 54 Mbps.
In other words: what you see is completely normal as your router is not able to have faster connection speeds then 11 Mbps. This does not depend on the internet connection speed you have.

  • Wireless Internet speed is one quarter of wired... Please help me fix it.

When connected via wire I run the Verizon Speed Test and get 85Mbps download 38Mbps upload speeds.
When connected via wireless (to the Actiontec MI424WR Rev. I router) I run the Verizon Speed Test and get 20.5Mbps download 19Mbps upload speeds.
I have downloaded and run the VzSpeedOptimizer100.exe program... after rebooting, Speed Test results were the same.
Based on one forum post I read... I've tried setting my wireless channel to 11, then to 6, then to 1... with increasingly worse Speed Test results.
Based on another forum post I read... I tried to change my encryption from WEP to WPA2, and my wireless internet stopped working altogether.
Another posts suggests that the router is garbage (which I'm starting to believe) and just buy another wireless router and use it instead.
Is there anything I can do to get the speed up to the levels I'm paying for without buying another router?
It sucks that I'm paying for a super fast plan and not getting any of the benefits of it.
Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

If you cant use wpa2 then your speeds will suffer. Take into consideration your wireless network card. Is it even capable of reaching higher speeds? Is it able to use n band? Mine wasnt and could only get as high as 25 mbps. I bought a small Belkin wireless usb dongle over a new network card since my laptop is so old and it works wonders. Even if you buy a new router and your network card cant handle the speeds its not going to fix anything.
Also, as mentioned already you'll get the best speeds from performance mode over campatibility mode, but any g band devices wont work on performance mode, only n.

  • Iphone 3Gs won't update i get an error message that says i am not connected to the internet. i HAVE TRIED ALL THE RECOMENDED TROUBLESHOOTING. ITUNES UPDATE WAS SUCCESSFUL AND I AM NOT HAVING ANY TROUBLE WITH THE ITUNES STORE. SO IT DOESN'T MAKE ANY SENSE

When I go to sync my iphone 3gs itunes alerts me that an update is available. I check to download an update. I then receive an error message stating that I am not connected to the internet. I am 100% positive that I am connected and before this download I was instructed to update itunes which I did without any problems and restarted my computer. I have tried all of the troubleshooting suggestions. I have no problem syncing or using the itunes store. I just can't get the update. I also have no problems with my iphone connecting to a wireless internet connection. Please Help!!!!!!

  • Why is download sooooooooo slow?  Checked internet speed - 6.5Mbs; seems OK and yet movie is going to take 2 hours to start. What sort of BS is that?

Why is download of movie so slow? Internet speed good - 6.5Mbs. Paid for movie. But told 2 hrs to start. Never have had this problem, why now?

        1.  6.5 Mb per sec. is slow for streaming video.
        2.  That speed only means that you COULD get that speed not that you WILL get that speed.
        3.  Have you done any tests to see what speeds you are actually getting, or what the quality of that connection is?  packet loss, slow DNS, etc. etc.
        4.  Even if you did have a "fast" connection that does not mean you get a great connection to every site.  So the if the connection between you and iCloud/iTunes is bottle necked you will not get much though put regardless of what connection speed you pay for.
       5.  Going to guess you are using WiFi which never gives reliable usable or performance for streaming video.
       6.  It is also possible that iCloud was just over whelmed at that instance and could not provide much bandwidth.
       7.  Your ISP may also be throttling your network traffic from sites like NetFlix and iCloud.
