Slow eSATA Transfer with PNY ExpressCard

Hello...
I just installed a PNY ExpressCard - SATA II 2 Port (eSATA) (Model # P-NSA2-EC-RF) to my MacBook Pro 2.16GHz Intel Core Duo - 2GB DDR2 SDRAM - 100GB Hard Drive @ 7200rpm. The driver I am using to make the PNY ExpressCard work is the SiI3132, version 1.1.9 (found here: http://www.siliconimage.com/support/supportsearchresults.aspx?pid=32&cid=3&ctid= 2&osid=3&).
I am using this ExpressCard to connect to the eSATA port on an external Western Digital MyBook Studio hard drive (1TB).
The thing is that the external drive seems to transfer faster with the Firewire 400 cable, and not with the eSATA (which in theory should be much faster, right?).
Any ideas why this is happening?

Ok, here are the xBench (v. 1.3) results from my internal drive, and then the Western Digital MyBook Studio external drive, first with FW400, then with eSATA:

  • Slow data transfer with Time Capsule on 802.11n ?

    Hi,
Actually, I don't know where to start. But let's explain my setup first:
My iMac (wired) and AppleTV (wireless) are connected to the Time Capsule (802.11n, 5Ghz)
My girlfriend's MacBook and 2 x iPhone 2G's (wireless) are connected to an Airport Extreme Base station (802.11b/g compatible).
The Time Capsule and AEBS are connected and show two different networks.
    Now the problem:
When I copy files from e.g. the iMac to the MacBook or to the Apple TV, it's very slow. I've used scp to copy a 200 mb file and it took about 1.20 minutes (at 2.5MB/s). I've did the same when the iMac was connected over wireless and it took about 3.45 to 4.30 minutes (at 1.0MB/s).
I'm not sure if this IS slow, but it certainly feels like it. 802.11n should be around 100 Mb/s in practice and 802.11b/g around 20-25 Mb/s.
By the way: downloading from the Internet is excellent, I get the full download/upload speed my provider offers for my subscription.
Second, I added the signal strength/noise levels for the Time Capsule attached devices. They vary around -68Db signal, -90Db noise.
The question is: are these levels normal ? What should be higher or lower ?
    Thanks in advance !
    Rutger

The new Airport Extremes and Time Capsules suffers from terrible performance over the 5GHz band and it's a problem that not only affects me and you, but hundreds of thousands of other owners.
Nobody knows if it's a firmware problem or the Marvell chips inside that's the problem, and Apple hasn't said or done anything for months.
I'm still hoping for a firmware update to solve this, but if it doesn't get fixed soon enough, I'm gonna return it and go back to backing up to wired disk and my rock solid Airport Express.
Not the happiest answer, but at least you have a clue now.
    Cheers,
    Koski

  • Slow transfer with old upgraded iMAC G5

    Hello,
I have some strange problems on my old iMAC G5 (PPC without isight) that I upgraded with a 750Gb hard drive and 2GB of RAM (still running MAC OS 10.3.9).
Most of the problems are intermittent and do not occur all the time. However, I could not find the reason for those problems and they could be extremely annoying.
    Here are the problems:
    - very slow data transfer (0.5Mbps roughly) when transferring large files to a USB key, while sometimes I get descent transfer rate (4Mbps)
    - extremely wireless connection while sometime it works great
    - wireless reception of my home network very bad. 1 or even 0 bar while with my newer mac book I get 3 bars.
    - wireless reception tend to vary, sometimes it is good, sometimes none (can't get an IP address)
    - slow burning to CDs in Toast: toast says the expected time is 3 minutes while acutally it takes 4 times longer.
    - sometime when I launch bittorrent the wireless reception worsten (go from 2 bars to 1 or even 0 bars)
Any idea where the problems could be coming from?
Do you think that a MAC OS upgrade could solve the problems ? in that case, which Os would you propose for a PPC iMAC G5?

    Hello jumanon
littleshoulders has given you some great advice (including third party software) that you should surely consider.
I offer three additions to his list that you can consider if you are still having problems:
    (1) Your comment on wireless variability may be the key.
wireless reception tend to vary, sometimes it is good, sometimes none ...
Someone else may be using or interfering with your wireless network. Whether surreptitiously or unintentionally, the result could be that which you describe. Interference might even be caused by someone in your own home using a wireless portable phone or other wireless device. Be certain that your network is secure (WEPA or better and password protected.)
If you already have a secure network, someone's portable phone or another network nearby may be using the same channel as your wireless router or, at least, causing interference when you both happen to be using your respective systems simultaneously.
The test for this possibility is simple. Change your router's wireless channel setting and see if the problem goes away. I suggest you try a channel as far from the current one as possible. For example, if your current setting is for channel 11, change to channel 1 (or vice versa) and try your system again to see if the problem disappears. If that change does not eliminate signal variability, try changing the router to channel 6 and test again.
If you have not changed the channel before, see your wireless router's user manual for instructions on which menu choices you must set to do it. It is not difficult.
If your problem remains regardless of whether you use channel 1, 6, or 11, channel interference is NOT causing your problem.
    (2) If you are still experiencing the kernel panics that you posted about previously, resolution of that problem may eliminate this one, too. The two might be related and could also be impacted by hardware peripherals that you use, so be sure to test after disconnecting all peripherals.
Once you have eliminated kernel panics, the problems you post about here may also go away.
    (3) As littleshoulders says, slow performance on your 10.3.9 Mac can certainly be caused by inadequate Mac OS X Maintenance, including too little disk free space. If you have not performed routine maintenance, do so now and see whether performance improves.
If necessary, you can use some of the tips in this kBase article to make more free space available.
Please let us know how it goes.
    Cheers,
    EZ Jim

  • Windows Server 2008 R2 Slow LAN Transfer (Receive)

Using Windows 7 Ultimate and Windows Server 2008 R2
Two machines, connected via 1GB 1000base-T LAN, with a 1Gb switch between... and yes, I've tried swapping cables and ports. Server has two RAID5's, a 6 platter and an 8 platter. Workstation has two RAID5's, a 3 SSD and a 4 platter. Both sides using Intel
CPU's and a RealTek 8100C chipset Gb LAN, same LAN drivers.
Using Windows Explorer to COPY a 20GB file:
Server Disk1 to Server Disk 2: >250MB/s (Server disk I/O isn't an issue).
Server Disk2 to Server Disk 1: >250MB/s (Server disk I/O isn't an issue).
    Workstation Disk1 to Disk2: >150MB/s (Workstation disk I/O isn't an issue).
    Workstation Disk2 to Disk1: >150MB/s (Workstation disk I/O isn't an issue).
Server Disk1 to Workstation Disk2: 91MB/s (near 100% LAN utilization).
    All looks good so far:
Workstation Disk2 to Server Disk2: 25MB/s declining to 17MB/s; occasionally as low as 9MB/s.
Some of the changes listed above appeared to work for a few moments. I've seen as high as 90MB/s for a few seconds, but it declines rapidly under 30MB/s... so no fix that has lasted.
It appears there is something in Windows 7 that prevents fast transmits; or something in Windows Server 2008 that blocks fast receives. I have set the server-side receive training to disabled, normal, highlyrestricted, and experimental and the Win7 side
to off, normal, and highlyrestricted in various combinations. Again, nothing concrete to report as an improvement.
What would the MS Gurus suggest I do with NetMonitor as far as capturing something worth their time to diagnose?

I've tried disabling auto tuning on the clients with no appreciable effect. The throttling feature however appears to have had an effect - changing the setting from default 10 to 70 has slowed the transfer from 20MB/s down to about an initial 6MB/s that
has slowed even further, and is now at 3.2MB/s (3% network utilization according to Resource Monitor at both ends of the wire - WS2008R2 and W7).
Question: What does the 10 (0x0a and 70 (0x46) represent: Mbps on the LAN, or 10% and 70% reserved, or?
I'll try the "off" setting of all FF's and add to this.
In any case, having a backup server that can't be utilized due to client "entertainment media" issues is a little painful... there should be a straightforward and published method to set the network to "normal".
    UPDATE:
I've tried settings of 0, 10, 70, and FFFFFFFF. 10 might have been best, but only marginally better than 70. Range of time to copy was under 7 minutes to over 8 minutes. Very small difference.
But I also tried this using Windows Explorer and a Dataset of one folder containing 12.5GB of miscellaneous folders and files - and was surprised.
     - Dataset is at \\WIN7\Dx\ = = Client physical RAID5 drive D:\Dataset
On WIN7 Client: Share drive D with Everyone as Dx
On WSvr Server: Share drive D with Everyone as Dx
    On WIN7 Client: Map \\WSvr\Dx to Z:
On WSvr Server: Map \\WIN7\Dx  to Z:
On WIN7 Client, using Windows Explorer:
-- Copy Dataset from Local Drive D: to Network Drive Z:
-- Took about  8 minutes, with 20% network utilization.
On WSvr (2008 R2 Server), using Windows Explorer:
-- Copy Dataset from Network Drive Z: to Local Drive D:
-- Took about 3 minutes, and 70% network utilization.
Why does running the copy from the server allow better network utilization and net throughput?
    UPDATE2:
I am NOT using HOMEGROUP; I have a dedicated workgroup network the client is a member of, and the server is a DC. I'll eventually try joining the client to the domain and see if that changes anything, but doubt it will so haven't taken the time yet.

  • Slow file transfer - ethernet + firewire issue?

    Here's the setup -
    Win98PC > ethernet (direct cable connection) > iMac G5 > Lacie d2 FW drive
Connection (100BaseT) works, logins work fine, browsing folders & files is fine. But when I transfer files from the WinPC to the Lacie drive through the iMac G5 it is unbelievably slow. Same thing if I use one of my other Macs in place of the WinPC, so it looks like a network or iMacG5 issue, not a WinPC issue.
On the other hand, if I use Airport to connect a WinPC, eMac or MacBook to the iMacG5, the file transfers are blindingly fast.
Is this perhaps because the FW & ethernet controllers in the iMac G5 are the same PHY chip? Is this some kind of contention for bandwidth through the PHY chip? (The Airport card in the iMacG5 is on a separate bus, not connected to the Ethernet/FW PHY chip, which makes me suspect something is up with the ethernet/FW controller.)
Anyone else encounter a problem like this with slow file transfer through your iMacG5 to an external FW drive?

Martin, that's really interesting. I've noticed slow network transfers in the past but always racked it up to overhead and parity errors inherent in the OS's. Never thought it might be the PHY chip, though it certainly could be. Apple has a broadband tuner which might help you by increasing packet size (but you probably knew that as a Level3). My stopgap is to do the file transfers with firewire, but your laptop may not have that option.
You could maybe copy to the mac over the network, then copy a second time to the LaCie. Not elegant or clean, but will save you time. Kinda like taking the backroads to avoid rush hour traffic - it's farther to go but you get there faster.
I'll look into the controller question. Let us know how you're doing,
    Ed

  • Slow data transfer on Disk images created in Mountain Lion

Hi apple community, since upgrading to OS 10.8, every blank disk image that I create using disk utility, no matter what partition setting I use, results in excrutiatingly slow data transfer speeds. I do not have this problem when I use disk images created on previous operating systems. For some reason it's taking about a minute to transfer 40mb to these folders. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

It happens with both sparsebundle and DMG, and I've tried various partition settings, including hard disk, CD/DVD, Apple partition map, as well as no partition map.

  • Excisable Stock Transfer with Excise Duty to Other State Warehouse

    Dear Experts,
We have a factory in India which has to pay excise.
We have depots in several location in India.
We transfer finished goods from Factory to Depot and have to pay excise.
When selling from Depot we do not charge the end customer the excise. (Only VAt and this is Depot is a Seperate company in Tally )
However, I will be paying the excise at Factory
The costing of the FG transferred to Depot has to be increased as I'm bearing the cost of excise and not passing it to the final customer.
We are implementing SAP B1 9.0 Please Suggest how to manage this in SAP 9
In tally we were managing these by creating Different Company but in SAP we need to manage in Same company
Is there any other workaround, by using inventory transfer form ? then how will be the excise postings
    Please Suggest
    Regards,
    Chetan Popat

    Hi Chetan,
On SAP you can do stock transfer with payment of duty selection on stock transfer form. and then you can create corresponding excise invoice. Make sure you are transferring stock from one excise warehouse to another.

  • Slow system – problem with OS, software, memory, hard drive?

    I am running a MacBookPro5,3 (Intel Core 2 Duo – 2.8 GHz, Memory = 2 x 4 GB, Hard drive = NVidia 500 GB - 100GB of which is free space), using Mac OS X 10.6.3.
I was running 10.6.6. Then attempted a software update to 10.6.7 and the system essentially stopped working, Was able to back up data using target disk mode, and then reinstalled 10.6.3 using a purchased snow leopard DVD (had lost the disk that came with the computer). Worked for a while but have been having issues with increasingly long and frequent system slow downs (spinning beach ball). Recently attempted another system update, and the update failed and wasn't able to do anything. Used the 10.6.3 dvd and did a disk utility check – it initially said there was a problem with the hard drive – but on another restart from the DVD this issue disappeared (but still no working OS). Attempted connection of my computer to another laptop using target disk mode – this failed to show the target hard drive and only showed the dvd which was in the computer booted up in target disk mode.
At this point rebooted using the DVD and was able again to install system 10.6.3. However, there are still occasions of sporadic slow-downs associated with specific applications (spinning beach ball for anywhere from 5 – 120 sec). Ran disk utility from the DVD again – states that the permissions and the hard drive is OK. Also, ran a memory test (using Rember) which stated that everything was fine (although the test took nearly 2 hours to run and was punctuated by much spinning beach ball activity).
At this stage i am not sure whether I have a problem with memory, the hard drive, the OS or the software. Clearly something is not right – are there any other options to test my system (since I don't have the original dvd – I haven't been able to run a system hardware test) - other third party options?
Thanks in advance for any advice, and apologies for long post.
    Rob

Sounds like a failing hard drive or SATA controller. It's not clear whether you have a backup of your data. If not, you should remove the hard drive from the machine and install it an external enclosure or dock, then back it up using another Mac. Then take the unit to an authorized service outlet for testing.

  • My 2007 mac pro has a slow internet connection with lion

    Hi:
I've been dealing with a severely slow internet connection with my 2007 mac pro - dual quad core.  I have os 10.7.3.  I use wifi.
Typically, I'll experience difficulty loading websites completely.  Certain sites have a 90% failure rate to load most elements.  Other sites operate quickly from time to time.  Often, a site will simply fail to load at all.  My cable company cannot find anything wrong with my connection and other, newer devices don't have a problem loading sites.  It seems the issue is most likely related to my computer.
Interestingly, I can usually "jump-start" the connection by turning my wifi connection off and on and this will (temporarily) allow me to get an image or video to download.
    Any ideas?
    Thank you for your time.

  • Slow down issue with Premiere CS4 on a Mac pro

I am having a similar slow down issue with Premiere CS4 on a Mac pro, but I don't have bloated prproj file size.
Here is what I am working with:
Mac Pro intel quad core 2.8ghz
    OSX 10.6.7 Snow Leopard
    6Gigs RAM
3TB storage between 4 drives, each drive with about 50% free space
I am editing a 10 minute HD video from avchd files.  The edited video is very heavy in photoshop files with a variety of different fx including green screen.  The system has slowed down to almost a standstill.  Anytime I move the playcurser, or try to do any action, it displays the spinning top "thinking" icon and takes 15 seconds to several minutes to unfreeze.  I am often forced to force quit and I have gotten unexpected quits several times.   The program also freezes on startup frequently.
No other programs are running.  When I export with media encoder, it took about 4 hours to complete.  The last 4 or so photoshop images I added seemed to tip the program over the edge.  It had been slowing down some, but those last few really dropped the processing speed.  Before those additions, export took 30 min to 1hr.
I did delete the render files (did not check if the file size was bloated beforehand, oops) but it has not significantly affected my performance.

Do you need all of those extra pixels in the stills? Are you panning the full 4976?
Two things to consider are that if you using, say a 1920 x 1080 Sequence Frame Size, you can only see that at any time, regardless of how large the images are in pixels. If there are extra pixels, i.e. the Pan is not using all 4976 pxls., I would Scale to just what you need in PS, prior to Import.
If you are doing any Scale in PrPro, its Scaling algorithms are not as efficient, as those in PS. [Note: CS5 and 5.5 are a major improvement on that statement.]
With many large stills (the max for CS4 is 4096 x 4096, if there ARE extra pixels, pushing those around will use up resources, and quickly. As a test, some years back, I was working on a "photo wall," and was using 4000 x 4000 images. The workstation had no issues with slowness, until I got to the 5th large still. By the 8th, the Project was too slow to edit. I had to wait for everything. Luckily, I have AE, and it handles large stills much more efficiently, and much differently, than PrPro. I just moved to an AE Comp, and completed the Project, finishing up n PrPro, after I Exported from AE.
Just something to think about. With Scaling in PrPro, this is one time, where bigger is not necessarily better.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
