Slow express

I have an airport express and Direcway internet at home. Using online "speed tests" I run between 500k and 700k which is what they claim to run. I just had DSL put in at my girlfriends house and am having problems. I went through Quest becuase that is the phone service she uses and it was easy. The service I got is their 7mb and I bought another airport express. I have run some speed tests and they show me running about 3mb which is less then half of the service I signed up for. Before I called and complained I hooked up hard wire to see what I would run. Using the same test at the same time I was running about 6mb. Using that logic I would have to say I am having an express issue. I am running what is listed below.

  • Slow express or bad setup?

I recently bought a new extreme, (simultaneous dual band II). To extend this I also bought a new express, ("n" & 5ghz).
The extreme is setup with 5ghz enabled. I understand that I now have one network broadcasting on two wavelengths.
    Problems:
    1. My macbook (black) can only see one network (extreme) but my son's (aluminium) can see two (extreme & extreme 5ghz) but only when very close to the station
    2. The express is horribly slow: when connected the macbooks and the iMac (6 mos old) are downloading sw at 2.5kb/sec.!!!
How can I check a) if the express is picking up the 5ghz and extending it properly b)that it's using the "n"? Last week I was using an old express with an old extreme that was faster than what I have now.
    What have I missed?
    Thank you!
    Hilary

Speedtest.net seems to be the most reliable source, did you use that to check your speed?
Did you check for interference on the network? If not istumbler.net will verify that for you.
Another common issue is DNS, it should be set to use your ISPs (Settings - network - configure DNS - should be set to automatic)
I would continue to complain to your ISP as you seem to be not getting what you're paying for and they could be throttling the connection further for ATV traffic.

  • Proper way to mix new Airport Extreme with Airport Express, wired and wirel

I currently have several macs. Two of them have 1000 airport (macbook pro and macpro), the other 3 have 100 speed.
I have one Airport Express I'm using now. I'd like a faster setup though.
Here's how I've got it wired up now:
    1. I go from my cable modem into a 10/100 Linksys wired router
    2. A Net gear 10/100/1000 4-port switch is hooked to the router
    3. My airport Express is hooked to the switch
    4. my 4 other macs then are hard wired with regular ethernet cable to the switch.
So, my wireless is only for the device(s) that need it, and all other macs go through wires to the switch.
Now, I want to buy a new Airport Extreme to increase my wireless speed when copying files and sharing my iTunes library.
Will having the Express on the network make the Extreme jump down to 100 speed? Or, should I buy a new router, a 10/100/1000 router, and just plug the new Extreme right into it, thereby separating it technically from the slower Express/wired stuff?
I guess I won't even need the Express anymore unless I use it for my older macs that don't have the new n speed airport cards, right?
any insight would be helpful, I'd hate to buy stuff I don't need, and vice versa.

Please try taking the readings again using iStumbler's Inspector feature (select Edit > Inspector from iStumbler's menu) to determine the Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) at your iMac for the following two cases:
o Case_#1: Just the AEBSn. (Temporarily unplug the AX for this reading.)
o Case_#2: When the network is configured for WDS.
Within the Inspector, on the Properties tab, note the values for "signal" & "noise" for each of these cases. These values should be negative.
SNR is the signal level (in dBm) minus the noise level (in dBm). For example, a signal level of -53dBm measured near an access point and typical noise level of -90dBm yields a SNR of 37dB, a healthy value for wireless LANs.
    SNR Guideline
    o 40dB+ SNR = Excellent signal
    o 25dB to 40dB SNR = Very good signal
    o 15dB to 25dB SNR = Low signal
    o 10dB to 15dB SNR = Very low signal
    o 5dB to 10dB SNR = No signal
For Case_#1, if the SNR is 20+dB, you may consider not using a WDS as this SNR value would represent decent Wi-Fi performance at your iMac's location from the AEBSn alone. If it's less than 20dB, then the WDS would be required. ... and, if this is the case, you would want to place the AX within the 20+dB range of the AEBSn to make sure it has the strongest signal to repeat.

  • Airport Extreme (n) and Airport Express

    Hi Guys,
I have an airport express, and am looking to purchase an airport extreme, and run the airport extreme on the faster (n) setting, but if i do this am i right in thinking that my older airport express won't be able to be a part of that wireless network?
Are apple intending to release an updated airport express do you think?
I want to store my itunes library on an external HD connected to the airport extreme via ethernet, and have the airport express connected to a stereo in the other room, so hard-wiring the express to the extreme and turning off the wireless function of the express is a no-no.
Am i right in thinking that i can't have both worlds? a fast n speed wireless network, with the slower express also on it?
    advice please guys
    thanks

As you know from reading the "Help & Terms of Use" for this area, this discussion group is a user-to-user discussion area and we don't have any more information than you do. Also as you know from reading the "Help & Terms of Use" for this area, speculation on future Apple products or plans is forbidden.

  • Airport extreme needs airtunes!

i think it's ridiculous that airport extreme does not have airtunes. this is a real sticking point with me. why should i upgrade to 802.11n when my airport express, which is a measly 802.11g will stream to my stereo. this means if i got the extreme i would still have to have the express right next to it. there potentially could be times when i'm trying to view something and i'm accidentally logged onto my slower express rather than my faster extreme. makes no sense. do an update mr. jobs and include airtunes, and 1 more usb plug at least.

COULDN'T,T AGREE WITH YOU MORE. THE EXPRESS IS SUCH A GREAT PIECE OF EQUIPMENT, AND TO HAVE PURCHASED STATE OF THE ART 'N' TECHNOLOGY JUST TO HAVE IT SLOWED DOWN TO 'G' WHEN STEAMING TO THE EXPRESS, MAKES NO SENSE TO ME EITHER. BUT ALL THINGS BEING EQUAL , I MUCH RATHER SET-UP AN APPLE NETWORK THAN THE OTHER BRANDS. THERE IS A TRADE OFF WITH WHAT YOU CAN CRAM  INTO 1 BOX AND STILL KEEP IT SIMPLE WITH EXQUISITE DESIGN.

  • Report Slow to render with expressions/formulas

Hi, using Report builder 3.0 to view/print transactional documents, eg invoices and orders.
I use table matrix (Tablix) to display the products dataset.
the tablix only has 1 row that just repeats the product information, with 6 columns.
I have simple IIF expressions in about 4 of the columns, yet these expressions slow down the report rendering dramatically.
    eg:  =IIf(Fields!part.Value > ".", Fields!ordqty.Value, " ")
also I had an expression to change the backgroundColor on every 2nd row:
    =IIf(RowNumber(Nothing) Mod 2 = 0, "Gainsboro", "Transparent")
both of these expressions add so much time to the rendering, if i remove them, then i have a PDF rendered in about 10 secs for a tablix filled with about 300 lines.. otherwise its up around 35 seconds..
is there any optimisation that I can apply to keep the expressions and speed?
    thanks
    Poy

Is that possible to add this expression in T-SQL? BTW, how long the report (T-SQL or stored procedure) is running?

  • Printing to Airport Express connected Laserjet 1012 very slow after update to 10.6.8

After updating a pair of computers that we have here to 10.6.8, printing to our Airport Express connected HP LaserJet 1012 has become incredibly slow. I timed it and it is taking 2:30 to print a blank page, whereas printing the same blank page under 10.6.7 (on an external drive connected to the same MacBook Pro) happens within 2 seconds. One thing that I have noticed is that when I bring up the HP Printer Queue the computer says 'connecting to printer' for 20 - 30 seconds, then sits at 50% complete on the printing for some time - anyone else running into similar problems?

Because I am not experiencing the same issue I have not needed to apply the CNET article. But just to be clear, did you follow the instructions to the letter?
If you did and it's still not working then you can begin narrowing down where the problem is by following some basic trouble shooting steps. First thing I'd try is creating a new user account (call it TEST ACCOUNT) and leave it alone, then try printing from that account. If it works then you know it's a software issue in your normal user account. If it still doesn't work then what I'd do is:
    1. Download 10.6.8 Combo Update at http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
    2. Disconnect all peripherals (including the printer)
    3. Backup using both Time Machine and/or a Bootable Clone using SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner
    4. Restart from the Bootable Clone or the Snow Leopard install discs.
         a) choose language
         b) Click Utililities Menu
         c) Disk Utility
         d) highlight the internal HD and the First Aid tab
         e) Repair Disk Permissions, Verify Disk & Repair Disk.
         f) exit Disk Utility and restart in Safe Mode
    5. Install the Combo Update
    6. Restart normally and test the system
    7. Begin connecting peripherals one by one and testing each.

  • Time Capsule and Airport Express as separate network on route acting slow

Wonder if anyone has any thoughts on this...
I have a Time Capsule (current gen) with an Airport Express N (last gen) which I would like to connect to my current router and create a network that is separate from the router's own wireless network. Currently, I've set the TC to work in Bridge Mode (connected to the router - ethernet) and have connected the Airport Express to 'extend the network' - this is also in Bridge Mode as well. However, when I'm away from the TC and in the Airport Express's range, the connection is very slow. Is there something I'm not doing right with the 2 Apple products or is it something with the router? When I'm closer to the TC it works fine, it's just when I'm far away there seems to be an issue!
    Thanks in advance!

Wirelessly extending your network will improve your range, but decrease your bandwidth. You should create a roaming network via Ethernet if you can.

  • Why is my Airport express so slow?

My Airport Express (purchased spring 2012) is super slow. I have a 100/10 MBit fibre connection, but the airport express seldom takes me beyond 10Mbit/s. Usually it clocks in at 3MBit/s. Now before you start considering other bottlenecks check this out:
Running Ethernet on my MBP gets me close to the limit: 96 MBit/s. The fibre is good.
Setting up my MBP to share a ethernet connection over WiFi gets me around 50 MBit/s
Hooking up a very old Airport Extreme gets me around 15MBit/s.
I have tried every 2.5GHZ and 5 GHz channel. Not much difference. The signal is pretty okay, around 50-60% according to iStumbler. Noice levels are at 15%.
Right now I'm running 7.6 firmware, tried 7.6.1. No difference.
Is the express really this bad?

  • I just installed Lion and the newest version of Logic express 9 (9.1.5) and every time i playback audio I get this error message:  [Disk is too slow or System Overload. (-10010) . Never had any issues before now...

I just installed OSX Lion (10.7.2) and updated to the newest version of Logic express (9.1.5) on a macbook and every time I playback audio I get this error message:  [Disk is too slow or System Overload. (-10010) The Sudden Motion Sensor may have parked the hard drive head, or the disk performance is not sufficient to read or write all audio tracks, or the system was not able to process all data in time]
Never had any issues before now... any ideas?

Have a look into the Preferences folder (YourUserFolder/Libraries/Preferences/) and trash all Logic preferences.
You'll have to setup the program again.
    cheers

  • Extreme + 2 Express = slow  | ABS original = fast why?

Parents came back from vacation, both sporting iBook 133ghz with extreme built in. Upon return, their extreme wireless has been performing extremely slow. As an example on their network (802.11G only) throughput is only 15-25kbs while downloading software updates. I stopped the software update, and switched to my base station (old one) running 802.11B only, and they both download at 354kbs constantly.
The full setup is 1 Extreme BS (main bs WDS ) to 2 Expresses's throughout the house to sound systems and used as internet extenders as reception is poor in the kitchen. The extreme is connected to a router which is hooked up to the internet. Before they left everything was fine, very fast transfers ect. I've restarted all BS's reconfiged channels, tested multi cast at 2 and at 24, no difference in speed. Reception is full and internet can be used throughout entire house.
Any help on why all of a sudden speed has become impossible to work with would be much appreciated....802.11b should not be faster...

With all of the AirPorts connected by Ethernet, you have the basics for configuring them into a "roaming" network.
Setup the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) to "Share a public IP address."
AirPort Utility > Select the AEBS > Manual Setup > Internet > Internet Connection > Connection Sharing = Share a public IP address
Setup both AirPort Express Base Stations (AX) as bridges.
AirPort Utility > Select the AX > Manual Setup > Internet > Internet Connection > Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
For each AX in the roaming network:
o Connect to the same subnet of the Ethernet network
o Provide a unique Base Station Name
o The Network Name should be identical
o If using security, use the same encryption type (WEP, WPA, etc.) and password.
o Make sure that the channel is set at least three channels apart from the next AX.

  • Airport Express Very, Very, Slow

I have an iMac with a Airport Extreme router and an Airport Express being used as a wireless network extender.
The Extreme is connected to my Virgin broadband @ 29-30 meg and works fine. However on my next floor up where the Express is , not some 20 feet away it will not work above 2.5 meg and sometimes drops to below a meg.
I have been on many web sites to try and find why the Airport Express is so much slower but so far no luck and what I have noticed looking on the web is that I'm not the only one to have this problem and some of these complaints go back a couple of years and yet still no comment or solution from Apple.
I would be very grateful for any help .
    Regards Jeff...

There are so many environmental variables that affect wireless networks that finding a solution to your problem can be elusive.
"Extending" a wireless network using an Express in the manner you describe essentially retransmits the same wireless signal it receives from the Extreme. If the Express is only capable of receiving a weak wireless signal, its signal may be strong but its throughput will be slow. The wireless signal it "extends" will be useful over the additional range provided by the Express but it will still be slow. To diagnose or confirm this possibility, unplug the Express and position a Mac in the exact same location. Whatever speed the Mac is capable of achieving will be similar for the Express.
Make sure the Macs you are using are connected to the Express vs. the Extreme. A Mac will not necessarily connect to the nearest access point, but if you position the Mac near the Express, turn off AirPort under its Wi-Fi icon, then turn it back on, it should connect to the Express.
If that test suggests the Express should be peforming better than it is, then investigate the wireless spectrum you are using. All new AirPort Base Stations are capable of creating and "extending" both 2.4 and 5 GHz networks. Generally speaking, 5 GHz is better due to its far greater number of available channels and less competition from neighboring wireless networks. Make sure the Express is configured to connect and "extend" the 5 GHz network and make sure the devices using it are also using 5 GHz.
If you are using 5 GHz, and the Express is in an area that receives a good wireless signal from the Extreme, and you are still observing poor performance, then there may be an internal parameter that has become corrupted in the Express. In that event a "hard reset" and subsequent reconfiguration is justified, followed by a repeat of the above tests.
If that fails to achieve any improvement, the possibility of a defective Express should be considered.
In the end a "roaming network" is a far more effective installation. It requires connecting the two with an Ethernet cable and a degree of labour that you may or may not wish to undertake yourself.

  • AirPort Express Slowing Connection

I am experiencing a significant slow down using AirPort as my WiFi Router. I have Time Warner Cable Ultimate 100 as my internet package, running through a Motorola SB6141 and speed tests clock my connection between 85 and 97 Mbps when I'm hardwired. If I try to go wireless, (running through an early 2014 Airport Express with 7.6.4 firmware), I am cut down to 11 - 15 Mbps. From time to time, I can get up to 18 Mbps. What's going on? I was getting these same speeds when I was on their Turbo package (Up to 20 Mbps), but I upgraded because 4 laptops, 2 tablets, 4 smartphones, a Smart TV, and a PS3 were seriously leaching the system. With no significant difference, it's pointless for me to pay the extra cost every month.
Am I going to have to upgrade to the Extreme? I thought the Express would have higher speeds than this...

The ethernet cable is coming from my express
OK, thanks for clarifying that for me. This confirms that the wired, or Ethernet portion of the AirPort Express is working correctly.
If the wireless radio on the Express is functioning correctly, then you should be able to get something in the range of 85-90 Mbps over wireless on either the 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz band.
BTW, these tests were conducted with only my MBP connected to the network, while it was sitting mere inches from theExpress.
That is much too close, since the signal can easily overload the wireless card on your computer, which will have the effect of knocking the speeds down.  Move the computer 7-10 feet, or about 2-3 meters away from the AirPort Express with clear line-of-sight between the computer and Express and run the checks again.
Be sure to restart both the AirPort Express and your computer before you run the checks.
If the wireless speeds still clock in low.......anything below 60-70 Mbps......then I would start to look around for any devices that might be introducing wireless interference on your wireless network. The biggest culprits are cordless phones in this regard, but any BlueTooth devices like a mouse or keyboard can sometimes create issues, as well as wireless camera/security systems. Turn off these devices temporarily as a test and restart the AirPort an computer again to see if the speeds will improve.
If speeds are still slow during your "test", then I would try a Factory Default Reset on the Express.
If still no improvement, you need to take the Express to an Apple Store....if you have one near you, or an Apple Servicer to let them take a look and run some tests.
If the wireless speeds are still low when you do this, then the Express is defective and will need to be replaced.
However, if the Express checks out OK, then you know that something is affecting your wireless signal at the house.  What that might be will be the real question.

  • Expression in SSRS Slowing down Report Rendering

An expression in my report is making the report to run very slowly. The
expression, set in a Row Column Visibility Property is like so:
    =IIF(Parameters!View.Value = 1 AND (Fields!PastVal.Value = 0)AND(Fields!DatePay.Value = 0) AND
    (Fields!Line.Value = 0),True, IIF(Parameters!View.Value = 2 AND Fields!TaxPaid.Value = "N",True, False))
Now this expression returns the right result. The problem is that it makes the report run very slow. To test it, I took off the expression and reports are displayed in less than 3 seconds but with the expression on, report takes over 50 seconds to run.
    Any help on this? Thanks.
    Zionlite

    Hi Zionlite,
After creation of that column just go to the row visibility property and use newly created calculated column directly as shown in below screen.
I kept both tablix one is normal having expression in visibilty condition and another with calculated columnto verify the result. when I run the report result is like below:-
I also attached the code for reference.

  • Very Slow 12" Powerbook with Airport Express - 15" PB OK

    Here's my problem; Our 12" 1.5 PB is very slow with Airport Express but It is OK when directly connected to the cable Modem via Ethernet. We also have a 15" PB 1.67 that works great with Airport Express & Ethernet. The 12" PB takes approximately 4-10 times longer to load Internet pages than the 15" PB. Here's what I've tried so far without success;
    - made sure software was up to date (10.4.8)
    - turned off the A/E security
    - different A/E channels
    - moved the A/E base station to another location
    - a differrent A/E base station
    - a Linksys WRTG54 base
    - new Airport Extreme Card in 12" PB
    - ran Apple hardware test on 12" PB - checks OK
    - re-installed fresh OS and Apps from original install disks
    - Firefox instead of Safari
    - new user account on 12" PB
    - re-installed original 512 RAM
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

    Jerry,
You're not going crazy, by the way. I have the exact same problem with my 12' Powerbook. I even tried swapping airport cards with another Powerbook. No luck. Ethernet is ok.
    Any help is appreciated.
