Slow extra steps in "Convert to DNG"?

I have seen several similar questions with no answers:
It appears that in the new LR6/CC, when I "convert to DNG and Import", LR CC first imports all of the CR2 files to the destination folder, THEN converts the RAW files to DNG while simultaneously trying to process the Preview images. This is a departure from previous versions and seems to drastically slow down the import/convert process. It took nearly 2 hours to import 700 20MB CR2 and convert them to DNG. I am running OS X 10.10.3 on a late 2013 27-inch iMac with 16 GB RAM. Is this a bug, or is this what Microsoft would call a "feature"?

I believe I watched a tutorial that indicated that Lightroom now downloads the raw files first and then does the conversion. This speeds up the download process and enables you to go back to my room to do other work more quickly. I cannot comment on the speed of the conversion because I don't convert to DNG. But my thoughts are that 700 raw files will take some time to convert.

  • Should I use default Raw or convert to DNG?

    Hello,
I have olympus SP570UZ and use LR 3. I'm not a professional photographer but do a lot of photography and shoot in raw. My question is should I use the default raw file for import/editing or should i convert to dng? does it effect editing capabilities and degrade the result when i convert to dng?
I work on laptop and it seems a lot slower in loading default raw files. Will this improve my overall work time and lower load on cpu and space, but my first priority is picture quality?
    Thank you.

Converting to DNG is really a matter of choice not necessity. If your camera is already supported by Lightroom / Camera Raw then there is little to be gained by converting the images to DNG at the beginning of your workflow. Many who champion DNG will keep their images in the camera vendors raw format until they've completed their edits and only then convert the final image to DNG.
In answer to other questions. Performance - DNG is not some magic bullet that will increase the performance of your family saloon into that of a Porsche. Space - The lossless compression used by DNG is more efficient than that used by the majority of other raw formats, but only saves space if you trash the originals after conversion. (Note - trashing your original raw files is not something that I would ever recommend let alone suggest.) Quality - There should be no difference in quality between the original raw file and the DNG version.
FWIW, DNG was originally proposed as standard "capture format" but as time has gone by and few camera vendors jumped on board Adobe's position has changed to "DNG is ideal as an archiving format". The latter is probably the less time consuming and more future proof approach. As mentioned above,it's also the approach adopted by many of those who champion the DNG format.
No doubt someone else will come along and add their tuppence worth for one or the other, but if previous threads on the same subject are any guide you'll still be left wondering. Try typing your original question into Google and see the mass of info and opinion that already exists. I can hear the sound of Hornets buzzing already.
Disclosure - I use DNG not raw throughout my workflow. This means that my thumbnails and previews accurately reflect the Adobe rendering in all of the applications "I" use. "I" don't use the camera vendors software (i.e. Canon DPP), so have no issues with the fact that it does not support DNG.

  • Are adjustments retained after Convert to DNG?

I have a lot of NEF images to which I have already applied image adjustments. I would like to convert these to DNG.
    1. Will my adjustments be carried forward to the DNG files?
    2. If so, will they have exactly teh same affect when applied to the DNG files as to the NEF files - i.e. will the final adjusted images look exactly the same?
    Thanks,
    Charlie

    1. Yes. The adjustments are stored inside the Lightroom database, not in the original files. Sometimes a copy of the adjustements will be stored in the file's metadata or in a xmp sidecar, but only when you turned that on. That file is not used by Lightroom but only by other Adobe programs when you directly access the images from them.
    2. Yes, a dng is simply the RAW file stored in a different container. By converting to dng, you gain some degree of convenience in Adobe programs, but it really does not matter one bit if all you use is Lightroom or only call Photoshop from within Lightroom. Dng files are usually slightly more compact than original RAWs due to a slightly more efficient (and slightly slower) compression algorithm used in them. You do lose ALL compatibility with manufacturer sodtware (i.e. capture NX, Canon DPP, etc.). They do not read DNG files at all. So think deeply before you do this and my advise is that if you go the dng route is to backup the original RAW files somewhere before converting. You should be backing them up anyway.

Is it wise to keep the Nikon camera files "DSC's"  after downloading them and converting to DNG files via Adobe converter for lightroom use. In other words do the DNG files have all the raw data I would ever need in processing or should I save the camera's DSC files?

DNG files do not contain some metadata supplied by the camera, which can be used by the manufacturer's software. Thus, if you don't keep the original Raw photo, you will lose this information.
If your 1000% sure you're never going to use the manufacturer's software, then this isn't a problem. But who can be sure what software you will be using 10 years from now?

  • Adobe Bridge CS4 - "convert to DNG" not working?

    Hi
I am downloading a bunch of raw .CR2 files taken with a Canon 5D mark iii, and trying to convert them to DNG using Bridge, so that I can open them up in Camera Raw (which won't read the original CR2 files as you need CS5.5 or later). I have selected the "convert to DNG" option but the conversion doesn't seem to work, it's just copying the CR2 files over, Any idea why?
    thanks

I have selected the "convert to DNG" option but the conversion doesn't seem to work, it's just copying the CR2 files over, Any idea why?
It seems you are using Photodownloader that comes with the CS version you are using currently. This Photodownloader is linked to the Raw converter of the version it is part of. So if it does not show the CR2 files as images it also won't convert to DNG
For this you need to download the latest and Free Adobe DNG converter.
Check this page, there is also an option to download the converter for either Mac or Windows

  • After Importing Tasks and Memos | Let's Move them from Remember to Calendar? More Extra Steps

After grabbing all your Tasks and Memos from BB OS 7.1, all the entries go unfiled into the Remember App. This is nice, but not nice. Anyone writing code to export these to the Calendar App or within Remember to 'move' them to the Calendar App? Does this make any sense to be left to redo these tasks and memos that invariably and potentially become Calendar worthy in terms of absolute reminders in advance of the due date?
It would seem logical, that say, for example, that if your old memos become potential Tasks, both the tasks and memos in Remember are somewhat treated the same. So now to export them possibly into the Calendar app? What am I missing here?
What would be the work around here temporarily until code is written to take all of your imported tasks and memos from, say, OS 7.1, now inside the Remember App, and send them OPTIONALLY to the Calendar? Nothing I can see at the moment...
Sometimes Memos turn into Tasks, which then could lead to Due Dates/Appointments/Do-To's in the Calendar App IF so chosen. But there isn't a strong blood relationship between Remember and Calendar. If there is, someone advise.
Relationship: Remember<>Calendar (In other words, strengthening the gap between Remember and Calendar.
When you've a SLEW of old Tasks and Memos coming from the previous OS's...wow...
In my Old Bold 9930 I had over a thousand valid memos, and over 2,300 regular tasks, segmented. Now joyously and unfortunately in the Remember App, WHAT A "TASK" TO FILE THEM WITHOUT ANY EXPORT to the Calendar or for the new Calendar to receive them with open arms and bifurcate them accordingly. (Splitting the main into two parts yet having the bond between the apps as close as possible)...
Sad that the old Tasks in BB OS 7.1 now imported into the Remember App has to be copied and pasted into the Calendar App for the Reminder and Re-occurrences, etc. Am I missing something? What a daunting task for power copy/paste people on a full qwerty to a touch keyboard.
Fervently experimenting with QNX Developers on this one. Need a cognitive, logical thought structure here to make this alleged "smooth" transition from one baton to the next baton (OS 7.1 to BB 10 in this area). Dropping the baton won't win the race against the competition here...

Well, what I've done is just the opposite as far as Calendar to Remember as the Calendar has the "Share" function base. With an extra step or two and of a 'cleaning house' from the import  from the old OS7.1, I've brought all my tasks and memos into the calendar and brought them back into their respective folder(s) inside of Remember.
You see, because the Remember app is so vast or initially treated as vast, if one is fast enought to power copy/paste while cleaning house, take all your memos, tasks, etc into the Calendar and sync Remember with the Calendar manually via the due date/time function in Calendar, then you've a precusor reminder due date in Remember, which then leads to your day's events in Calendar.
For me I've not doubled up on the amount of tasks and memos, but provided myself as a power BB user the ability to work around and strengthen the relationship between the two apps. If the due date is accurate on the Remember app (if chosen), you do get reminded that particular day, and on that particular day you can then revew the day's notes/memos from within the Calendar app, clean the task/memo house as you move along, and sit back until the code is written just for the reversal of what protocol I've taken here. Either way, you avoid third party apps, your passion for BlackBerry remains, and your productivity is elevated with BlackBerry 10.
A lot of people don't realize how powerful QNX is as I am working with QNX developers now with feedback within the ebb & flow of the code. Give less than three years through BlackBerry Evangelism, Philanthropic aspirations and more, and BlackBerry will take back a strong segmented market space and enhance the quality of lives for those who are loyal and believe in BlackBerry as a lifestyle. All BlackBerry, all of the time.

  • Steps to convert a song to mp3

    Hello
I need the steps to convert the songs that I purchased into mp3, I've already burned them into a cd and I will import them, so what I need it is to know what do I do next.
Note: I want to convert my purchased song into an audible cd.
    Thank you!

From the sound of it, you may have simply burned a data CD containing your .m4p files. This is great for backup purposes, but if you want to do anything else with the files, you would first need to burn a playlist containing purchased music to audio CD. To do this, be sure to go to iTunes > Preferences > Advanced, and click the Burning tab. From there, make sure the Disc Format is set to Audio CD (I would also set the Gap Between Songs to "none"). Now, you can burn an audio CD from the playlist containing purchased music.
Once you have your audio CD, you can import it into iTunes any way you like, but if your goal is simply to have an audio CD you can play anywhere, you've already accomplished that.
When you use the word "audible," it makes me wonder if you're talking about an audio book. In this case, you may need to do something else, but I would first need to know if that's what you mean--rather than just a CD that's audible (that you can hear).
If you want to import the contents of your audio CD into iTunes as MP3 files, as implied by the subject line of your post, you would just need to go to iTunes > Preferences > Advanced, click on the Importing tab, and choose MP3 Encoder from the Import Using drop-down list. Note that you can fine-tune your MP3 encoding preferences if you like. Once that's taken care of, you would simply import the CD into iTunes as usual.

  • Steps to convert access point from LightWeight mode to Autonomous mode

I need steps to convert the following access point from Lightweight mode to Autonomous mode

    Regards,
    Majid

    Hi Majid,
The method is just hidden a little further down the doc that Scott linked (+5 points Scott :)
Using a TFTP Server to Return to a Previous Release
Note This section does not apply to Cisco C3201WMIC and Cisco C3201LAP.
Follow these steps to revert from LWAPP mode to autonomous mode by loading a Cisco IOS release using a TFTP server:
Step 1 The static IP address of the PC on which your TFTP server software runs should be between 10.0.0.2 and 10.0.0.30.
Step 2 Make sure that the PC contains the access point image file (such as c1200-k9w7-tar.122-15.JA.tar for a 1200 series access point) in the TFTP server folder and that the TFTP server is activated.
Step 3 On the PC where the TFTP server is located, perform these steps:
    a. Disable any software firewall products, such as Windows firewall, ZoneAlarm firewall, McAffee firewall, or others.
    b. Ensure all Windows files are visible. From Windows Explorer, click Tools > Folder Options > View > Show hidden files and folders.
Step 4 Rename the access point image file in the TFTP server folder to c1200-k9w7-tar.default for a 1200 series access point, c1130-k9w7-tar.default for an 1130 series access point, c1240-k9w7-tar.default for a 1240 series access point, and c1250-k9w7-tar.default for a 1250 series access point.
Step 5 Connect the PC to the access point using a Category 5 (CAT5) Ethernet cable.
Step 6 Disconnect power from the access point.
Step 7 Press and hold MODE while you reconnect power to the access point.
Step 8 Hold the MODE button until the status LED turns red (approximately 20 to 30 seconds) and then release.
Step 9 Wait until the access point reboots, as indicated by all LEDs turning green followed by the Status LED blinking green.
Step 10 After the access point reboots, reconfigure it using the GUI or the CLI.

  • Convert to dng is greyed out in CS3 Bridge Photo Downloader

I have no idea what has happened, but when I use the Photo Downloader in Bridge (CS3) to copy using my card reader, the option to convert to dng is greyed out and is not available for me to select.  I can convert to dng using the stand alone dng converter and also from within Camera Raw with no problem, but I like the convenience of doing the conversion using the Photo Downloader.  This option was available to me and worked perfectly up until a couple of weeks ago.  Any ideas and suggestions will be greatly appreciated.  thanks in advance.

  • PSE8 for Mac: Convert to DNG in Bridge Photo Downloader fails

Using PSE8 for Mac.  When I get RAW photos from Bridge and specify "Convert to DNG" in the advanced options of the Photo Downloader, the RAW files download but the conversion to DNG fails for every image.  I can successfully convert using the standalone DNG Converter, but I would like to use the option in the Photo Downloader that comes with Bridge.  I'm in touch with Adobe Support on this but not having a lot of luck.  Has anyone had this problem or know what to do?
Also, I cannot see the RAW images either in the Photo Downloader or in Bridge.  They show up as blue squares with a flower graphic on them in the Downloader, and as white squares in Bridge.  I can only see images once I open them in Elements.  Is this normal?

Also, I cannot see the RAW images either in the Photo Downloader or in Bridge.
This is the source of your problem. You need to update the raw converter in bridge, which ships with a very old version (5.0). In bridge, go to help>updates and let it do its thing.

  • Convert to DNG not available in Bridge photo downloader?

All of a sudden when I try to upload RAW photos from my Nikon D5100, "Convert to DNG" is shown in grey and will not let me select it in the photo downloader. I am having to use an outside converter instead. Also, the Camera Raw application is acting up - not letting me open images with Command + R, not saving image ratings of 5 stars, etc. Any ideas on how to resolve these issues? I am guessing that they are linked...

It was all of a sudden...randomly and not after an upgrade as far as I am aware.
Since you mention 10.9.3 which is a recent update it may well be caused by this update. Read the article Yammer provided and try that. Also as described in earlier post, restart Bridge holding down option (alt) key and from the menu choose reset preferences.
But there have been some problems with recent ACR and DNG in photodownloader that should have been solved with latest ACR. So also try the manual download and install of the link Yammer provided.

  • How do I convert to DNG for CS3 without demosaicing?

Recently purchased the Sigma 60mm 2.8 lens for my Sony NEX-6, which shoots ARW raw files. When converting to DNG (using the newest 8.2.0.94 version), the files increase in size from ~15MB to ~60MB. This appears to be because I have the compatibility settings set to Camera Raw 4.6 compatibility, and the converter believes this means it has to demosaic the image. This is done with no override and no warning that information is going to be discarded, despite the fact that I shoot raw files because I want raw data. How can I produce DNG files compatible with Photoshop CS3 and Camera Raw 4.6, without discarding data and producing huge files?
This is doubly frustrating since manual lenses convert fine. I do not care about any lens correction information in the original ARW files, as only very minor corrections are needed anyway. Losing this information to produce good DNG files is perfectly acceptable to me.
Similar threads show that newer versions of DNG can be converted to without the demasaicing being applied, but this is not helpful to me. See http://forums.adobe.com/message/4312768, http://forums.adobe.com/message/3333887.
I have no plans to upgrade photoshop (especially the CC versions), so need something that works with CS3.

Okay, so I lied. I'm going to answer one more time. In my opinion, it isn't necessary to change your "entire workflow". Take the example of a panorama image. As in ACR, I make adjustments to the raw images using Lightroom. Of course, I have imported those images so I'm able to see that folder of images in my Lightroom library. Lightroom has an adjustment where I can highlight all images and choose to "match total exposure". I have found that using that really simplifies the merging to panorama process.
When I have done all that I need to do in Lightroom, I highlight all the images and choose the option to merge to panorama. Photoshop opens, the images that I've highlighted transfer to Photoshop and the panorama dialogue appears listing those images. I set my options and let Photoshop build the panorama.
When I'm through with Photoshop I save the panorama image and return to Lightroom. The panorama is there automatically added to the catalog. I can take that image back to Photoshop if needed. And I can export images in different formats for different purposes. But I only have the master images and the one panorama that I have to maintain. If changes are decided upon in the future I only have the one image to worry about.
The postprocessing in Lightroom is much more elegant (in my opinion) than ACR. You know, you can download Lightroom and try it for 30 days and see what you think. I still believe you are anticipating much more change than is really necessary. So my original answer still stands.

  • Trouble with CR2 and converting to DNG

I am new at using camera raw files.  I recently got a Canon EOS Rebel XS/1000D as well as Adobe Lightroom 3.  I tried loading my CR2 files into Lightroom by "copying as DNG."  Once I did this, the program said "the files are from a camera which is not recognized by the raw format support in lightroom."  I then tried downloading the latest DNG converter from Adobe.com to convert my files, but this program also said "the source folder does not contain any supported camera raw files."  The third route I tried was loading my photos into brindge directly from my camera and checking "convert to DNG."  This did not work either.  When I looked on Adobe's website, I saw that Camera Raw 6.3 should be downloaded for Lightroom 3, but it is not compatable with CS4.  I did not do this because I did not want to interfere with the other CS4 programs and I am not sure if this has anything to do with it (I have camera raw 5.7 I beleive)  I have also tried saving my photos to my computer, then importing them, as well as directly importing them from the camera into Lightroom.
Can anyone help me with this?  LIke I said, I am very new to using camera raw and Lightroom and I am not sure what I am doing wrong.

    CG_1225 wrote:
also, I am not sure why the size of the photo was so small.  Could this be part of the problem?
Almost certainly. I suspect the file got truncated.  The header info is there, but it looks like most of the image data is just missing.
Buy some new good quality media and do not trust the card these images came off of until you can verify them. Even if the media is suspect, a card reader might have better luck extracting all the data, so just put the media away and look at it later.
I've said it before, but it bears repeating. It isn't about /if/ your media or hard drive will fail, but /when/.  Flash media is tricky because it can go bad in really inconvenient ways like this.  Pro cameras are starting to accept dual media so you can at least have a JPEG copy on the other media if the raw write fails. But, as suggested elsethread, ALWAYS format the media in-camera so that the firmware on the card can spread the writes out over the entire card over time, and map out bad spots as they occur.  And they always occur.  Flash media starts to fail the moment we buy it and stick it in the camera.

  • Convert to DNG doesn't work in Bridge with 5D mark III

I'm using CS6 and the 'Convert to DNG" option doesn't work when I download my Canon 5D Mark III files, but it works with my 5D Mark II files. HOW can I get this to work. I've had to convert using the DNG converter.

Update ACR to 8.7.1 and you won't have to convert to DNG at all. the 8.7.1 DNG converter also supports the Mark 3.
