Slow "fast" Computer

Hello all,
I currently have a 15" mid 2012 Macbook Pro, 2.3Ghz i7, 8Gb of RAM, and a 750GB 7200RPM Hitachi HD.
Recently in the past two months I have noticed the computer getting sluggish, I actively monitor the systems performance and have not noticed any hardware bottlenecking, so I did not give it much thought until about a month ago when various applications started crashing randomly; particularly, safari, mail, and final cut pro. I decided to update to Mavericks to see if that would fix things, but in the past week the problem has gotten worse. Now safari will crash, and in the process of restarting it the computer will freeze up and I will have to restart the machine. To me, it does not seem like the hardware is the issue, so is there anything I can do to check the software? Would reinstalling the OS from scratch help? Any advice would be appreciated.
Just to give you an idea of the hardware usage, the processor will never go above 10% usage unless I am rendering a video. The RAM normally has about 2GB free and about 1.8GB inactive. My Hard drive is about 50-80% full normally.
Thought I doubt it matters, the motherboard was replaced in march due to a bad sound processor.

Have you updated Photoshop to the latest release? Ther was a problem early on with the Smudge Tool but it has long since been solved.

Slow/Fast/Reverse DOES NOT WORK

I have read other posts on this issue. When I attempt to apply this effect, it does not work. This is a new project in iMovie HD 6. Clips will not take this effect. It shows up in the preview fine but will not apply. Below is what I sent Apple. Any and all help (solutions) appreciated. Is anyone else using this effect successfully in HD 6?
I select a clip (it is selected), click on the Editing tab, then click on the Video FX tab, and then select the fast/slow/reverse option. I am correctly using the slider to slow the clip down just one tick past the default position. The effect shows up in preview but will not apply. The red progress line (that indicates the effect is being rendered) shows up for about a tenth of a second and then stops. I am using the latest version of iMovie (6.0.3). I have a Dual 2 Ghz G5 Tower. I have 1.5 GB of ram. I am using OSX 10.4 8. All my software is up to date.
The camera I am using is a Sony VX2000. Never had a problem with iMovie 4 and 5. I have two internal drives. I have an external drive that is for backups only. All three are Mac OSX Extended (Journaled) format. The drive i am capturing to is the original drive that came with with my computer. It is 160 GB. 147 GB is free. I keep this drive clean and only for current projects.
I did have some plugins installed for iMovie from GeeThree. They are the updated versions for Intel and PowerPC running OSX 10.4.8. Again, all software is up to date. I did remove those plugins from the plugin folder. Also, I have ran Disk Utility and permissions are fine. I have not removed the preference files yet (plist) because I wasn't sure which ones to remove.
A third thing I did was to create a new project (after unstalling the plugins, restarting, using Disk Utility), reimport some footage and see if the slow/fast/reverse effect would work then. It did not work. I then saved all my current work and saved to tape. I NEED THIS EFFECT TO WORK! Please who can solve my problem? Dinner is on me!! LOL!

Neo Bios 1.6 and Slow/Fast/Turbo/Ultra Modes

Can anyone tell me what the difference is between the Slow/Fast/Turbo/Ultra modes in Bios 1.6 on the Neo boards?
The only mode I can get to work is the Slow mode. On all the rest, Win XP boots OK, but when I would run programs, the screen would lock for a few seconds, then come back in low resolution stating I had an unspecified "device failure", and I had to restart my computer for it to work properly.
In any case, I have no clue what the difference is between modes. I was able to complete a 3dMark test while in Turbo mode, and compared it with one run in Slow mode, and the differences were minimal.
Can anyone enlighten me?

If you set your memory timings manualy or use a ratio other than 1:1 there will be no difference between Fast/Turbo/Ultra-turbo (only difference being "by SPD" memory timings) -as far as i can tell

Installing 'RadioWMPCoreGecko on my computer (I didn't know it was there) has slowed my computer right down. What can be done to rectify this.?

Norton Security says this is safe to use and keeps coming up with this every time I switch my computer on. The first time this was downloaded was on 3 Jan.'12 - According to Norton,there were 6 downloads - RadioWMPCoreGecko versions 5,6,7,8,9,and 19dll. This repeated itself on the 5th,6th,8th, 9th,10th and 11th of January. On the 7th Jan. it excelled itself and there were 25 downloads repeating the downloads shown above several times. Each time my usually fast computer has slowed down. I have run several programmes I have for viruses and other items and these are all clear. The problem started on the 3rd Jan. and has progressively got worse with each download.
I see that 22 other people posted this problem for which there seems to have been no answer given. I would appreciate some help in resolving this.

Premiere Elements 7 crashes worse on faster computer

I have been running Premiere Elements 7 for a few years with sketchy and slow, success on a straight Pentium 4 machine with about 1.2 GB of RAM. It would crash sometimes, and was really too slow to get any real work done, so I decided to install it on my once dedicated DAW, which has the following specs:
Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L MoBo; Q6600 processor; OCZ 4GB DDR2 800 RAM; Windows XP-32; Gina 3G soundcard; Asus EAH3450 graphics card (which is an ATI Radeon HD 3400 Series card) with 512MB Video RAM.
C drive is 75 GB WD Raptor. D drive is 600 GB drive.
On the faster computer, it's worse. It crashes all the time and the sound drops out ever few seconds.
I basically imported a photo into a new project and started getting "Running Low on Memory" messages, and then it crashed. In the lower left corner of the Premiere window, there was a Display Setting warning sign. So, going by what I found on the forum, I went into preferences and changed the Display setting to Standard (the second option). It was originally set on the first option.
I set my scratch disks on the larger drive, where my video elements also reside.
I set my virtual memory to be on this disc as well, at 8196 KB. Originally it was set at 8000 KB on Drive C.
I restarted and managed to get a video clip in there with a photo and did a couple of effects, then got the same low memory message. Also noticed that the Display Warning sign was in the corner as well. Whenever I try to play back something, the sound drops out every few seconds and comes back in.
This makes no sense to me.
The video was shot on a Sony Bloggie camera. Using GSpot, the video clip appears to be:
Video: Codec: avc1 / Name: H.264/MPEG-4 AVC
Audio: Codec: mp4a: MPEG-4 AAC LC / Info: 48000Hz 128 kb/s tot, stereo (2/0)
I'm frankly stumped and would appreciate any help.

P.S. Since I've had nothing but trouble with Premiere Elements 7 since I got it, do you think Adobe would do a free upgrade to an "unbroken" version? I'm serious. I feel like I spent hard earned money on a broken program. Thanks.

Several things strike me as problematic
PRE7 doesn't support dedicated MPEG4 camera like the bloggie. This is why you will be getting red lines all the time - there is no project setting match for your clips.
Your graphics card is old. The last legacy driver for the 3400 series is v10.2 dated February 2010. The most recent Catalyst suite is dated 7th March 2012 v12.2. Which of these do you have?
Your C: drive is only 75GB total. Even if you have pointed Adobe files to your D: drive, PRE does still create many (measurable in Gigabytes) working files on C: (in W7 it is under C:\Program Data\Adobe, I don't know what it would be for XP). How much free defragmented space does that drive have?
You say you've set virtual memory to 8,196KB. If that is correct and not a typo for 8,196GB that will give you great problems.
See if you can temporarily move stuff off of your C: drive to leave around 40GB free defragmented space. I think that should give you an immediate performance and stability boost. But with that bloggie footage you are always going to have problems.

Hey Guys
Nice forum....Just have to get used to it. I find the searching isnt as good as the lats one but look gr8.
Anyways I have just got 1024MB Corsair PC3200 2-2-2-5 RAM. Its amazing made my PC so much faster and timings have made it so responsive.
Anyways I have a 875P motherboard like you can see below but in the BIOS I can select different options (Performance Options)
SLOW -> FAST -> TURBO -> ULTRA TURBO.
What exactly do these do? On my last generic RAM I had it on FAST and not have it on TURBO. Is it worth goin onto ULTRA TURBO? Also how kinda effect with these setting have on the life of the PC.

The settings you are referring to are associated with PAT.
There are different levels of PAT, if you choose slow, is it off in CPUZ?
FAST
TURBO
ULTRA TURBO
CPUZ will report PAT to be enabled on all of these settings but it may not be fully enabled.
ULTRA TURBO = FULLY enabled PAT mode.
Run this program to tell you the level of PAT

Extract it to a folder, run the lowercase version.
See what PAT level it is running at.
Then change modes and run the program again.
What it does, going back to the INTEL link,
The setting adjust the memory/chipset timings to achieve higher system performance.
It should not be a problem if you have good memory.

Have download 350 movies to Ext HD using itunes. Left itunes library on desktop drive. My computer now runs very slowly. Is there a better way to add movies without slowing my computer down?

Firefox.exe uses too much memory slowing the computer down, what can be done?

This doesn't happen every time I am using the browser, maybe half of the time. When it does happen it takes a long time for it to clear up. It can slow the computer down even after I have exited out of the program, maybe still not responding because of high memory usage. Is there anything I can do to get Firefox to run smoothly?

Some updates are better handled by Internet Explorer or the built-in updater, such as any updates from Microsoft's Windows Update or Office Update systems. (These systems are not compatible with other browsers.)
You can use the "all systems" page to download a full installer and then copy it over to your XP system.

Download and used the complementary copy of iMovie HD v6.0.4 if you want special effects/third-party plug-ins. iMovie '08 has no command structure for the threading of delayed third-party rendering modules. If you must use iMovie '08, create your special effects as either pre- or post-edits.

Ok, on the 875P Neo board, what does "slow" "fast" "turbo" "ultra turbo" do to the settings in the bios? Ok "slow" is probably default (shouldnt they just call it "default"?)... but what will the rest SPECIFICALLY do to my system?

No one knows for sure, MAT is enabled in 1.6 on turbo and ultra turbo, it also seems to use more agressive memory timings - the sisoft sandra scores at turbo and ultra turbo are excellent.

You stumbled on a Mac Tower forum, not notebooks.
If you are running 10.6.8 then you must have bought it 3-4 yrs ago?
Might want to check the specs and then look at various programs and their requirements as to whether Final Cut Express and ah, you want to import media to an app, not "upload."

Why has new update totally slowed my computer down?

the new update has slowed my computer down drastically. Sites load very slowly, and sometimes not at all. Then, it continually reverts to "Firefox Updated" page

Quit Safari.
Open Keychain Access /Applications/Utilities
Select Passwords on the left.
Delete all the keychains for the sites you have trouble logging into.
Relaunch Safari then go to Safari / Preferences, seleect the Autofill tab. Make sure: User names and passwords is selected.
Now select the Security tab. Click: Show Cookies. Delete all cookies or just the ones for the sites you mentioned.
Navigate to a site. After entering your user name and password, you should be prompted to save that data, click Yes. That will create a new keychain for you.
if you still have problems, open Keychain Access again. From the menu bar click Keychain Acces / Keychain FirstAid. Enter your admin password then click Verify. If necessary, click Repair.
