Slow FCP on MacPro

I recently got a nice MacPro 8-core computer with 16 Megs of RAM and an NVIDIA video card.
Nice huh?
I though so too, until I opened the Activity Manager and saw that even during Export and rendering from FCP, the 8 processors were barely be taxed. And I looked at the memory usage and it said it had 10 GB free.
*Do I have a machine that will not perform the way I thought?* I called tech support, and the very ill educated person, told me that it should be fine. I then got transferred to a FCP “specialist.” After waiting on hold for over an hour, I was told that he only knew about “installation” and surface level issues. WHAT YOUR DEFINITION OF SPECIALIST?
He gave me a very similar unhelpful answer.
I am a faithful Mac user. And since my severe stroke at the age of only 37, my whole business life now revolves around my Mac.
I feel like the dual-pro G5, which I replaced, may have been doing just fine. FCP doesn’t seem to be running any faster. And I am onlining a national TV show that is graphics-heavy.
We are living on disability, and we took out a special loan just to buy this computer. (10.8M+) The job I have now may bring us up a little, financially, but right now it doesn’t look too promising.
DID I OVER BUY?
Was my $3000 G5 just as good as my $11,000 MacPro?
If there is some way of speeding I up, I would appreciate a call. Soon.
If not, what are my alternatives. I’ve only had the machine for a couple weeks.
Here’s another quandary—I exported a video from FCP and the “info” says it took only 12 minutes. I re-exported it because by first attempt clipped the first few seconds, so I included the video-only seconds. Now the batch monitor is saying that the export will take 90 minutes. HOW COULD THAT BE?
Frustrated,
Dan

Hi dnucks,
It is clear how you feel and the frustration you are in!
We will try to help but in order to do that we need to ask questions, be patient!
An 8-core MacPro with 16GB (not MB) of RAM should definitely be a top configuration.
Do you have an NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT? Are you using only FCP or Motion as well? Are you using FCP6 or earlier versions?
Are you using externl drives or separate internal drives for your media, renders etc.? Which ones , give specs including type of connection!
Did you get your extra RAM from Apple or you added some cheaper ones by yourself?
Also read this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAM ( Check out the pararagraph titled +memory wall+ and the relative links).
What format are you editing on?
Your answers will help us to help you!
Best,

  • Need Help: Adobe Acrobat Pro 9 Slow Performance on MacPro

We installed Adobe Acrobat pro as part of Design premium on MACPRO twelve Core 2.93 with 10GB Memory and 27inch Display running OS 10.8.4
We opened high resolution pdf file 170MB with 330pages with 300% Zoom, when we scrolled trough the pages, the respond is very slow and sluggish. We Zoom in to 100%, scrolling still sluggish.
We try to reseat the memory, repair permission,  reset PRAM and the problem still the same.
    Can you help me?

In all truth 170mb is pretty big for a PDF. Even with a rockin' setup like that, it's about the equivalent of 30 copies of Atlas Shrugged (891 pages). Being high res, and that size, it's not a "quick" file. My mini has 4Gb and a Core i5, I'm pretty sure it would drag on it.

  • Slow performance on MacPro

    Hi,
Not sure which section this should go in.. Mac Pro or Leopard so I put it in both areas because I need to find out what is wrong with my computer
I thought my MacPro was running slow so had a look in activity monitor. I saw that the process named aslmanager was using 100% CPU of one of the CPUs and was using a total of 1.5GB of my 2GB of my RAM (More arriving soon) When I force quit this my MacPro was much quicker & more resposive.
Wondering if anyone knows anything about this. Huge thanks in advance!

    Hi there,
Many thanks for the reply. The few startup items I have I have had for ages and so I don't think it is them.
I am sure that I remember that the launchd was the parent process when I looked at it in Activity Monitor.
Below is what terminal showed me when I did as you said:
    ASLMANAGER(8) BSD System Manager's Manual ASLMANAGER(8)
    NAME
aslmanager -- Apple System Log data store file manager
    SYNOPSIS
    aslmanager [-s store_dir] [-a [archive_dir]] [-ttl days] [-size max_size]
    DESCRIPTION
aslmanager manages files in the ASL data store written by the syslogd
    server.
aslmanager is started automatically at various times. It runs shortly
after the syslogd server starts, at midnight (local time) if the system
is running, and any time a file in the ASL data store directory
(/var/log/asl) reaches a maximum size limit as specified to the syslogd
    server.
aslmanager scans through the files in the ASL data store directory
/var/log/asl, or some other directory specified following the -s flag.
Files that contain only messages that are older than the default 2 day
time-to-live are either archived or removed. The default 2 day time-to-
live value may be overridden by supplying a value following the -ttl
flag. A value of zero allows files to remain in the store with no time
    limit.
A maximum size may be provided as a value following the -size flag. This
will cause aslmanager to archive (if -a is specified) and remove files
until the total size of the data store is max_size bytes or less. Files
are removed in order starting from oldest to newest. Files with the same
date are removed in standard lexigraphic sort order by file name.
Files are either removed entirely or copied to an archive directory. If
the -a flag is specified with no argument, files are copied to the
/var/log/asl.archive directory. An alternate directory path may be spec-
    ified following the -a flag.

  • Slow fcp?

I have used FCP for editing material shot with my Canon 7D without problem but now both my computers (Macbook pro and Imac) can´t really handle it anymore. Everything is just slow. Any experiences? I guess it´s time for a new computer once the FCP X is released, but do I need to buy the whole studio again to be able to use it since I already instaleld it on 2 computers?

Your scratch disk should never be your startup disk, always an external disk. And that scratch disk should be connected via FW 800 or e-sata and have at least 25% free space.
Check how big your project files are ... 100Mb should be the absolute maximum. Make sure you edit in ProRes LT not h.264. Without more details it's hard to give advice from here.

  • Slow FCP start up, really slow!

I have a new MacPro that seems to be running great with all programs except FCP. Whenever I start it up, the FCP startup screen remains up for a good two to three minutes. On my old G4 it was a matter or maybe ten seconds. I've checked other programs, even DVD Studio Pro but they all start up quickly. Any ideas as to why this might be happening? Thanks.

Which version of FCP are you running? Anything prior to FCP 5.1 will be running under Rosetta, an emulator that allows the non-Intel version to run on the Intel machine. FCP 5.1 was designed to run on the Intels natively.

  • Slow FCP Startup

    Hi,
This is a continuation of my post from over at the COW which is still not resolved:
    http://forums.creativecow.net/thread/8/1118518
Here is a screencap video of the launch splash screen to show you guys where and when the launch is happening:
    http://reels.creativecow.net/film/fcp-splashscreen-slow-startup
It was suggested I delete the Boris Plugins - but when I deleted them [ie, archived and moved them to a different folder] & rebooted, FCP still seemed to reference the files [!] - and it still hangs.
Is there a cleaner way to delete those plugins?
Also, when FCP launches, it causes Firefox to freeze up - which is strange considering this doesn't happen on my little MacBook Pro
    I'm on an 8-Core Mac Pro, 6GB RAM, FCP 7.0.3, 10.6.4
    Any advice would be welcome.
    Thanks,
    Wayne

    Hi,
Thanks - I removed all the Boris plugins from the system and lo&behold, FCP launched like a dream.
There is only one plugin I would like to keep, the BCC Units Chroma Key filter.
When I reinstalled it, it gummed up the works and I was back to square one - so I've deleted it again.
I'm going to be in touch with Boris' tech support - but if anyone has any advice on how to keep the plugin installed without slowing down the sytsem I'd appreciate it.
    Thanks so much,
    Wayne

  • Aperture2 - very slow scrolling on macpro

    hi guys
I have a 1st gen dual dualcore 2.66ghz macpro with 16gb ram and my aperture library is around 900gb or so and is on a 2 x 1tb Raid1 mirror. I have twin 30" screens with the 1900XT.
    I have bought aperture ver2.
Never really had a prob with aperture version 1 but aperture 2 whilst being very fast on my laptop (a 2.4ghz 17" with 4gb ram) is very sluggish on my macpro. The odd thing is that it's not really slow in terms of adjusting images or exporting jpegs, but it is painfully slow scrolling through thumbnails.
I typically have it setup so that I have thumbnails on one monitor and the full screen view on the 2nd monitor. When I browse through a typical wedding shoot of approx 1500-2000 images the thumbnails view is agonizingly slow - it little crawls along and looks like it kind of pauses/jerks as it scrolls the pictures up/down. If I switch off the thumbnails and just use a "list" whilst looking at the image on my 2nd monitor it is superfast. it's just the browsing of thumbnails that crawls.
This is regardless of the filetype, whether it be from 5D's or 1Ds mk3's. There is nothing in the aperture activity window i.e. it's not generating thumbnails or previews or anything in background.
I have a spare drive that I might do a fresh install of os x + aperture on just as a test but i doubt that'll help.
The macpro in general does not run slow i.e. CS3, safari, iweb etc. are all as fast as ever. Lightroom version 2 was extremely fast but I can't stand the interface - think I'm too used to aperture.
I'd upgrade to a 8 core macpro but the problem is my 16gb ram won't work on the new ones supposedly - and in the reverse direction apparently I can't upgrade the vid card I have now to something quicker.
    The things I am thinking of initially to try and fix it are ;
    - reinstall of 10.5 & aperture (that will be a pain)
    - change the raid1 setup to a raid0 setup for more speed
    - Swap the boot drive for a WD 10k rpm drive. doubt this will help though
    - buy a new mac. Would rather not as I just bought 2 x 1ds mk3's and don't want to keep throwing money away But if I need to I will.
    any ideas please?
    thanks heaps
    Gav

    Hi, Dave

Understand about the graphics card recommendation. Shame Apple doesn't emphasise 512mb on their system requirements page.
You're not correct on this. They have the minimum and recommended system requirements
    http://www.apple.com/aperture/specs/
It's very frustrating having a powerful system (albeit "crippled" by a characteristically "feeble" Apple stock graphics card), shelling out for Aperture only to find that a system that runs just about everything else well won't run Apple's (sic) flagship photo app well.
It's not just about the processor. As the Apple site states it's a combination of processor, ram, graphics card, hard drive. And, I would add speed of hard drives and cables used.
That said we hold Aperture classes through out the nation on stock systems (sometimes on minimum default systems what you would buy from the Apple store) with large files from Hasselblad, Canon, Nikon...and Aperture rips through them. Many MBP only have 256mb graphic cards and they still run Aperture fast especially Aperture2.
So what we are attempting to do is help you find what the bottleneck is. It's not the application it has to be something else.
Maintenance: regular Diskwarrior, permissions repairs, maintenance scripts, reboots and chanting(!)
But have you placed osx in safe mode yet? safe mode is quite different than repairing permissions, disk warrior etc.
Photos on boot drive but tried them on another internal drive as well. No difference. Drives are new WD or Maxtor.

  • Exporting is too slow - FCP 7

    Hi,
    Problem:
I don't know why rendering and exporting are too slow, even when i woke up this morning and found my video exported it couldn't open.
    I'm trying to export a 10min footage.
It tells me it needs 35 - 40 min to export and after 30min. the time remaining is still the same (30min).
after a few hours of exporting, the video does not open/play.
    Technical Settings:
I converted my footage to ProRess (HQ), the sequence settings are set to ProRess (HQ) too.
the material in the sequence and the sequence settings are exactly the same.
    Additional Info.
I tried exporting to my machine instead of a hard drive to check if the problem is from the hard drive, but still exporting at the same speed (too slow).
I've been editing for 10yrs. and never faced this problem.
    my machine is an iMac. OS X, Version 10.6.8, Processor 2.66GHz i5, Memory 4GB 1067 MHz DDR3.
    Thanks,
    Omar

And here are some other troubleshooting tips
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2591
Are you running any other programs at the same time?  If so, quit them and see if that makes a difference.
Also what are your sources?  Prores(HQ) may be way overkill.

  • Slow LAN connections MacPro(new) + Mavericks

Hmm.. We run IPv6 here among all machines in addition to IPv4.
Mavericks preferentially runs most services over v6 if you have it
and Bonjour goes for a v6 address too when connecting.
New MacPro to old MacPro (2011), MacBookPro etc. Mavericks on all.
    Problem
    1. SMB2 file sharing was transferring at around 300Kb/s
    2. JollysFastVNC was almost unsuable, screen lag was awful.
    3. Transers failing due to timeouts etc.
    Tests
Forced SMB2 to SMB1, no change. Tried SFTP, SSH, same.
tried switching to link local address (fe80::) with no difference.
Everything is assigned a valid routeable v6 address via router
    advertisement, etc.
    Fix
Forced Mavericks services such as SMB to use IPv4, now see ~100MB/s between machines on
a GigE switch with a tiny cpu load, like 4%.
    Note
What's odd is that IPv6 connections to outside (ie to the net) are blazing, we
see > 57Mb/s over Comcast Business class to Google, Facebook, for example.
This all worked peachy pre Mavericks (LAN wise).
    Conclusion
    1. IPv6 Mavericks LAN throughput is somewhat broken.
    2. Force file sharing, VNC etc to use IPv4 by using the remote sides v4 address when
    connecting.

Try a factory reset of the Home hub by pressing a pin into the recess on the rear.
My advice would be to uninstall BT Desktop Help and see how you get on. You don't need Desktop Help it and while it might not be the cause of your problems it is known to cause problems on some computers. To uninstall it follow these instrutions:
    Uninstalling BT Desktop Help
    Go to Start
    Select All programs
Select BT Desktop Help from the list, then Uninstall BT Desktop Help
Follow the onscreen wizard through to completion
Check the Task Manager Processes tab (Ctrl + Alt + Del -> Task Manager) and "End Task" if any of the following are listed:
    BTHelpNotifer.exe
    McciTrayApp.exe
    McciServiceHost.exe
If you see McciCMService.exe, 'stop' this in Services (Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services)
Open the Registry (Start -> Run -> Type "Regedit") and delete the following directories:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Motive
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Motive
    (If you have a 64-bit computer) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Motive
Clear the Internet Explorer Cache and Cookies (Within IE -> Internet Options -> Delete…)
Delete any leftover Program Folders from Windows Explorer (Windows Key + E)

  • Slow startup for MacPro

    Hi all,
My MacPro seems to be taking longer to start recently and I notice that in the Startup Items list in System Profiler there are a couple of items for Hardware listed, and I don't have the hardware anymore. I'm thinking that these might be the reason, so how do I remove these items from this list?
    TIA,
    Cliff

I have done both, formatted and reinstalled and verbose mode... The thing I noticed about verbose mode is that it doesn't start putting anything on the screen until the little wheel starts turning. That only start on my machine after a 2 minute delay. It is consistent, I have timed it several times. Reboot, get startup bong, see apple on screen, wait 2 minutes and then the machine starts the little wheel and the rest of the boot process. I have ran Techtool on the drive and it says no problems.... Thanks for any other ideas.. Lastly, do you think I should get a new drive just for grins (no pun intended) as it is the stock drive that is the boot drive.

  • Slow FCP Writes

I'm trying to optimize my xsan for FinalCut HD. I've got a storage pool made up of 6 Raid5 luns from 3 XServe RAIDS. (1 7 drive lun per controller) Metadata is on an additional RAID box.
Block size is 128 and breadth is 8 for a total of 1MB
Using xsan tuner on a client, I can read 1080i 10 bit FCP files at ~360MBs but i can write at no more than 146MBs. (If I test UNIX file writes, I get about 350MBs)
    What have I missed?
What are the optimal settings for writing Uncompressed 1080i 10 bit to an xsan volume?
    xsan 1.3
    Prefetch 8
    Block size 128
    Breadth 8
    Write caches are enabled
    Host flush is disabled
No affinities are used (these seem to have a big performance hit)

Try turning off the Xserve RAID controller write caches except for the one hosting the metadata, but leave the drives' caches turned on (I think).

  • Slow Screen Updates - MacPro, Nvidia 8800, and 30" Cinema HD

I've noticed some truly odd behavior from my rockin' box. The cursor update is really sluggish as I draw over an image. The lasso, paintbrush... well every tool chugs along at about 10-15 fps as I edit an image. It feels incredibly laggy (I'm using CS3).
I've also noticed that Quicktime doesn't play any movie smoothly. Even though Quicktime Player Pro reports a movie is playing back at 30 fps, the screen clearly isn't keeping up (it's maybe displaying 15-20 fps).
Has anyone else run into this?

Did you add the 8800 card sometime after you bought your Mac Pro, or was this something that's been going on from the start? There are some problems reported with the card using Apple's Motion.

  • If I dont embed when sending form fcp how do I get it back?

I’m new to motion so sorry if this is a real stupid question but..
I’m using motion to make my titles. I’ve done some tutorials and I’ve been selecting what I want to add the title to and go send to motion.
When the widow opens I’ve been leaving the tick box for embed motion projects checked.
It has been suggested that I don’t do this. If this is the case and this is the stupid part how do I get it back to fcp? Do I go file export? If so what setting am I best to use?
It’s not a super motion graphic sequence it’s just a basic title so would I be best exporting it as HDV or pro ress? I’ve been told the animation codec is the part that’s slowing fcp down and causing it to take so long to render once the project is complete and that I only need to use that is it’s a motion graphic sequence.
My project is filmed and edited in HDV and the render table for the sequence is set to proress.
    Sorry for all the questions.

import the motion file into fcp and throw it on your timeline.

When I am im (for example) the motion tab in FCP, and i want to increase a slide (say the scale slider) how do i increase the scale by an increment of 1 at a time. The only wa i see of doing this is
    -typing in a new figue
    -moving the slider
In horrid Avid I would press the up or down arrow and the settings would change accordingly so it's easy to fine tune and not be guessng figures...there musy be a way of doing this in FCP?

You are going to find that the increments on some of those FCP motion and effects sliders are nonlinear or completely nonsensical.
