Slow finder save as...

When I save out of Mac Mail often there is a very long delay before the save as window pops up. Same happens in Photoshop. Any bright ideas how to speed things up?

You are probably experiencing the "Traffic Jam" of having everything on one drive. When you say Print, the print section of the Application, the Print preferences, the original data file, the spooled print file, all go on and off the drive. If your memory is tight, you may need to page something out to make room as well.
It works better when you have a separate Boot Drive, with only System, Library, Applications, and the hidden unix files including Paging/Swap. User files are moved off to another drive.
Are you sure you have enough memory?
You could also be seeing read re-trys on the Hard Drive.

  • "Save As" command with very slow Finder response in Tiger

Ever since upgrading to Tiger using the "Archive & Install" option, my applications have had very slow operation of the "Save As" command. The Finder takes a long time to open and display the Save As window with folders and file name etc. This has occurred on all of my computers - a PowerMac G5, an iMac G4 and a PowerBook G4. It has not changed with upgrades as far as 10.4.5. I have tried the following suggested in another post about slow Finder actions without success:
Refreshing and reblessing the following system files and the folder followed by reboot.
    1. /System/Library/Extensions.kextcache
    2. /System/Library/Extensions.mkext
    3. /System/Library/Caches/com.apple.kernelcaches/
Trashing the following files and a folder followed by reboot
    1. /Library/Caches/com.apple.LaunchServices-xxxx.csstore
    2. /Library/Caches/com.apple.LaunchServices-xxxxxx.csstore
    3. /Library/Caches/com.apple.ATS/
I have also deleted the /User/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist file and rebooted.
Does anyone else have this problem and how do I solve it?
    PowerMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Thank you Roger - this does seem to have solved the problem - my local Apple service people did not have an answer on this, so I'm grateful

  • Flash CS5: Slow to save files

Is anyone else finding it very slow to save files in Flash CS5? I've gotten in the habit of saving often, probably from dealing with CS4 being so unstable. It's now habit that I hold down command and hit S then Return every time I test a movie. Yet with CS5, saving a file is no longer immediate. I'm on an 8-core Mac Pro with 12GB RAM, working with a 60MB FLA, and it takes at least 7 seconds to save the file, complete with progress bar. This may not sound like a lot, but if I -- make a change / save the file / test the movie -- and repeat that over and over again, those seconds add up. It's odd because CS4 saved files so fast it didn't need a progress bar and I never noticed a delay.
I suppose one solution is to get over my CS4 fears and not save as often, but I don't quite have that level of confidence yet!
Is this happening to everyone or just me?

    Hi Stiv41,
I would say that there might be some case where saving a file in CS5 could take a bit longer, but it really depends what you have inside your file. This is especially true if you import lots of assets inside your document. With the introduction of XFL, we are now importing the asset but also saving a copy of that asset inside the document structure. Having that extra copy could take a bit longer to save, but you have now the ability to share the document along with all the assets, and those assets can be edited very easily.
Note that usually the first save is going to be a little slower, but subsequent saves should be much faster. The first time we need to create the XFL document structure, but on subsequent we try to only save what has changed. Of course sometimes we'll need to resave the entire document depending on what changed.
Also saving as Uncompressed should not make much of a difference at all.
Finally I would say that a 60 meg Fla file is fairly large. I mean if you have 60 megs of drawing that one thing, but 60 megs worth of assets you might want to consider linking them instead. Since you probably want to publish a small swf.
    -Valerio.

  • Excel file very slow to save - but only for one user! Why?

    The problem ...
I have an excel spreadsheet that I share with my partner, i.e. another user on my Mac.  The file works just fine for me, but is very slow to save when my partner uses it.  Save time for me is about 3 seconds, for my partner about 45 seconds.  The problem only seems to be with this one file, and the slow save time is driving her nuts!  (I'm not able to upload the file as it contains confidential info).
The file is about 225kB with about 6 worksheets and some macros.  It’s stored in a folder below the standard OSX ‘shared’ folder.  Both users have identical permissions on these folders and this file.
What have I tried already?  Re-saving the file in a different place, renaming it, re-creating it by copying the contents to a blank file, repairing permissions on my partner’s user account, copying excel .plist files from my user to hers, deleting her .plist file & creating a new one.  None of these have worked.
System details ...  2.8GHz I5 iMac (late 2010 vintage), 8GB memory, OSX 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard).  Excel for Mac 2011 v14.2.3 (auto updates on & all installed I believe)
Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

    On the problem Mac...
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.

  • Funky slow Finder behaviore

I have an MP3,1 which is working just fine. It is fast for my needs, and I have never really had a significant problem, until today...
In OSX (10.9.3) I suddenly experience a very very slow Finder...
It takes seconds to open up drives as well as folders... wth...
Funny thing is that if I login as my wife on the very same MP, there is absolutely no problems - fast as usual... I switch back to my login, and it is slow... And, it is only Finder action that is slow. Aperture, iTunes, Photoshop, all is fast as usual...
I haven't made any changes, and any software updates affect my wife as well.
Is there anything that is user specific which would affect OSX in this way?

I appreciate what you are saying, but the programs updated lately, wouldn't they be the same ones in my wife's account? And if one of these were screwing with the system, wouldn't that affect her account as well?

  • Textedit slow to save, slow to print

On my iBook, Textedit has recently been very slow to save documents...two to three minutes for a file with only the word "test" typed in it, for instance. The first few times it happened I interrupted the spinning beach ball and force quit the application, but I decided to try to wait it out and discovered that it actually does save consistently, albeit after a long time.
    Printing gets the same response.
When I transfer the same file to my iMac, it saves and prints fine.
I have trashed the plist file, but this didn't help. Any ideas?

Distiller keeping a claw on your EPS files? A PostScript printer driver gone bust? Could be anything, even more so on XP64, which never was officially supported by any Adobe app....

  • Slow finder start up at airport card boot

    Hi,
For some reason my macbook pro 17" is extremely slow at start-up, when it gets to the part where it's loading the airport and battery icon (after logging in as a user). Any internet related applications (ichat, safari, entourage) are also slow to start if I try it soon after booting up. I'm also having problems connecting to the internet via the airport. The signal is at full strength, but there is no internet connection. This was all working the day before yesterday, and when I plug in directly to the cable internet connection via ethernet, the internet works.
One other catch is that I'm in a foreign country and don't have any startup CDs/DVDs with me, and it would be cost-prohibitive for me to call applecare (which I'd really like to do!). Also couldn't figure out how to contact applecare via ichat (there are still some luddites among us, apologies). Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

    I've tried the following:
    SLOW FINDER:
Repair disk permissions - didn't seem to do much
Switching user accounts - same slowness with my other account
Downloading 10.4.9 update - problems downloading, says it sent the file to the trash and I can retrieve it and try again. Did that, but it didn't work.
    Resetting PRAM at start up
    AIRPORT:
    downloaded software updates
tried plugging directly into internet connection, and that works fine.
Read something about reseating the airport card but can't find instructions on how to do it for a Macbook Pro 17".

You should never let your hard drive get less than 15% empty. This number is an arbitrary number that most have found to be the maximum you can have and still have a relatively smooth riding system. That may not directly affect wireless internet, but the speed of caching for the browser gets harder as it has lack of space to write to when it gets too full. The speed of startup is also affected as caches are written when the startup happens.

    Thanks.

  • What specifically causes slow directory listings in OS X? Finder, Save As boxes, etc

I have a very specific problem with my laptop in terms of speed. A lot of things happen very quickly on it, especially since I started using tools like Onyx etc to maintain it. But my Finder is notably slower than the machine in general.
To give you some examples, sometimes when I'm in column view and I click on a folder, it can take several seconds before the list of files appears in the next column. When I go to File > Open inside an application, it seems to take forever for the box to be propagated with the list of files in the directory. Changing directories inside a box like this yields the same result, the whole list goes white for several seconds before the new directory appears.
Spotlight has similar issues - it always finds what I want, but it seems to take a very long time. Sometimes it's several seconds before any results appear at all, and other times some results appear straight away (usually applications) but I have to wait considerably longer before documents also appear in the list. Launching applications from Dock can take a while, with apps sometimes bouncing up to 10 times before opening. Interestingly, if I quit an app and relaunch it later, it takes far fewer bounces for it to open, it's only slow the first time I launch after a reboot.
You get the general idea. File and directory listings are very slow, and far slower than almost any other task I want this computer to do.
I've defragmented both used and free space, rebuilt the directory several times, verified with no errors, repaired permissions with no errors, and I'm stumped as to what could be causing this kind of problem. Activity monitor doesn't report that I have any page outs and CPU isn't running high at all so it's not that. I do regular smart checks and surface scans to make sure there's no corruption or anything like that and they consistently tell me everything is fine.
    I'm pretty stumped.
MAcbook is a black late 2006 macbook 2,1 with 2GB RAM (max), running 10.6. Also, when I installed 10.6 a couple of years ago it was far faster than it is now, before anyone tells me I simply don't have enough RAM. The computer behaves this way even when it's fresh from a rebook with 75% of RAM free, so that's not the issue.
    Any ideas?
EDIT: My SL partition is 100 gigs, 60 used, 40 free. 39.5 contiguous free space in one block, hardly a desperate free space situation...

I used techtool pro, and I did so specifically in the hopes of solving this problem. It does seem to have sped up the computer somewhat, but more in the sense of how quickly it opens and saves files, which when you consider the result of defragmenting seems to make sense. Hasn't helped with this Finder problem in any way whatsoever though, or with the opening of apps from the dock.
EDIT: I don't want to get into a debate about this here as this isn't the subject of this thread, but built in defragmentation only handles files up to a certain size, and when you're a producer like myself working with DV and WAV files which can get into the hundreds of megabytes, that doesn't cut it. The TTP defragmentor specifically lists these files again and again as the ones which fragment, so it's obviously not a totally flawless built in system.
Anyway the slow directory listing issue was present long before I touched the drive with any such tools and the tools made absolutely no difference to that problem, for better or worse.

  • A plea to Apple please fix slow finder, slow "save-as" options, slow address search in mail

Like many I am adding my voice to those whose finder has slowed to a crawl, it takes many seconds for it to "see" a folder.
I found one fix to the above at http://osxdaily.com/2013/11/13/fix-finder-slow-high-cpu-use-mac-os-x/which basically resets the com.apple.finder.plist file.  Thanks to the user who posted this.
And the "save-as" function that is also very slow.  I have seen some work-arounds but I am not comfortable messing around in Terminal and would probably forget to get rid of a turn-around when an OSX update comes.  So apple please solve this.
The mail problem is similar.  It is now quicker to drag an e-mail address from contacts into mail than typing in a name!  Apple please fix.
None of these problems were there with Mountain Lion and judging from the hundreds of posts out there, it seems it can only be a Maverick issue.
    Thank you.

I am in OSX Mavericks discussions so not sure where you get the "Which iPad" item from.
I surmise it was from the link you provided.
Most problems reported on this site are directly attributable to incompatible system modifications and poorly written or otherwise ill-conceived utilities. They exist in roughly the same proportion that have existed with every OS X upgrade since Jaguar, at least. Apple has no way to fix problems caused by software they did not develop and cannot control.
If you are interested in solving your problems more information is required. Start by ruling out hardware defects, including an impending disk failure that would cause the symptoms you described. Back up your system if you have not already done so.
To help determine the possible causes of this behaviour read the following. None of what follows is intended to fix anything, but it will provide the additional information required to advance troubleshooting, assuming you are interested in doing that.
Boot OS X Recovery by holding ⌘ and r (two fingers) while you start your Mac. At the Mac OS X Utilities screen, select Disk Utility. Select your startup volume (usually named "Macintosh HD") and click the Repair Disk button. Describe any errors it reports in red.
When it finishes restart your Mac and test again for operation. If it's still not behaving as you expect it should, please post the results of EtreCheck in accordance with the following instructions:
Apple Support Communities contributor etresoft wrote a very useful app to quickly gather certain system information that may help point to a cause of this problem. Go to his website, download and run EtreCheck:
    http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck
Etrecheck will be in your Downloads folder. Open it from there. You may see the following dialog box:
Click Open - etresoft contributes to this forum frequently and can be considered a trustworthy developer.
It will take a moment to run as it collects its data.
Copy and paste its output in a reply.
Do not be concerned about anything that says "Problem" or “failed” or anything else that may appear in red.
EtreCheck was designed to remove any personal information (such as your computer's name and serial numbers) but if you see anything that looks like an email address or any other personal information that should not be divulged to others, please delete or obscure that information when you post the reply.
When you are finished with EtreCheck, quit the program. It occupies very little space, and you can keep it or drag it to the Trash as you wish.
After completing the above please determine if the problems also occur in "Safe Mode":
Safe Mode or "Safe Boot" is a troubleshooting mode that bypasses all third party system extensions and loads only required system components. Read about it: Starting up in Safe Mode
You must disable FileVault before you can start your Mac in Safe Mode.
Starting your Mac in Safe Mode will take longer than usual, graphics will not render smoothly, audio is disabled on some Macs, and some programs (iTunes for example) may not work at all.
Merely starting your Mac in Safe Mode is not intended to resolve the problem, it's to observe its performance without certain additional components.
To end Safe Mode restart your Mac normally. Shutdown will take longer as well.
System performance problems for reasons that cannot be isolated to any other cause justify an SMC reset. Be sure to read the procedure carefully and follow all the steps exactly as written, even if they seem inapplicable or trivial.

  • Imovie slow to save to file

When I want to Share iMovie project to file it takes over 10 hours for it to process to the theatre or file as an mp4? Why does it take 10 hours to share a project in iMovie????? All of this program is slow, it is not user friendly, and like PC items I have to keep purchasing new programs to burn a DVD or avi file? I can't just download from carmera and burn a avi DVD? Why is this not easy?
    M

hi, i couldn't follow all this but
how much free space do you have
highlight your hard drive icon and command+i (get info)
    how many GB are Available
    next,
have you booted off the Install DVD and ran
    Disk Utility> Repair Disk
do you have any results (errors) in red text
if Disk Utility can't repair them check out DiskWarrior (or Erase, restore backup)
have you created a New User account and tested
have you ran the latest Apple COMBO UPDATE for your operating system
have you ran all Apple and Adobe updates
have you used a utility like Cocktail OSX to clear your caches and run all your maintenance scripts
have you reset (zapped) the PRAM and rest the logic board (may be called a PMU reset on an iMac, not sure)
have you added any 3rd party software that may interfer with the OS-Finder
have you added any photoshop plugins
check (can you post a similar screenshot of your plugins):
(to take a screenshot, Shift+Option+4 and drag the area you want, then Insert Image on your response)
Lastly, if nothing else works, you may be better served by Erasing your HD and starting over (Time Machine backup may save your bacon unless the problem was backed up into your backup)...

  • .gif preview slow in Save for Web

I am having an issue in Save for Web where the .gif animation preview works very slow and choppy. I am an advertising designer and many times I need to work on animated .gif banners. I am working with Photoshop CS6. When I play the animation in the frame timeline the animation speed works as intended, a little choppy but the timing isn't too bad. However when I go into the Save for Web screen and play the animation it always appears a lot slower and looks choppy. Anything se to 0.0 or No Delay runs as if its set to .1 seconds. Now if I export the file and open it in Chrome the animation speed seems to go back to normal. This wasn't always the case, I tested this 2 or 3 months ago and the animation speed in the export was also slow and choppy but it must have been fixed in one of the updates since then.
My issue is I don't want to have to preview everything in Chrome after I export it, and then possibly have to go back and tweak it then save again, preview again etc. I have never encountered this issue in previous versions on Photoshop or other machines. Ususally my experience has been the opposite, the frame timeline has always been slower, but previewing in Save fro Web has shown a pretty accurate preview.
I also have a HP laptop running Windows 7, photoshop CS6 and I don't encounter this issue at all. It seems that everyones default answer on all of the forums is "different browsers handle .gif animation speeds differently, etc.." but int he past I have saved a .gif on my mac and it was slow and choppy in the Chrome, then I saved the same file on my PC transfered it back to the mac and previewed in Chrome and the animation played quickly and smoothly.
I can't see it being a hardware issue because the machine I am using is farily new. iMac Late 2013/2013, 3.4 Ghz Intel Core i7, 16GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 675MX 1024 MB, running OSX 10.8.4 Mountain Lion.
Could it possibly be a setting or preference that needs to be changed? As I stated above it seems that now when I export the animation works fine in the browser the preview is just slow, but I have read that many people are having this issue so hopedully someone will have a solution.

I don't use a Mac but the first the first thing I do when I have performance problems with Photoshop on my PC is to do some house cleaning.  I reset my Photoshop Preference to a saved copy I made when Photoshop was working well.  I Also clean my disk up clearing caches and temp files so the plenty of scratch space.  I close all applications and look at the machine CPU utilization. Then try Photoshop to see if it is back to its normal performance.

  • Can not find Save botton in log configure.

    Hi,
I want to change the log severity level from some application. I went to log configuration and I clicked the button for "change on selected node". However, I could not find any "Save" or "Apply" button. When I exit the page, system showed me "you will lost the unsaved data". Does anybody know how to save it? Thank you.

    Hi,
Which SP level you are on? If you are on NW04 SPS12 or NW04s SPS02 or below upgrade that to NW04 SP 13 of the J2EE Engine 6.40 or NW04s SPS 03 of the J2EE Engine 6.40s or higher level.

  • Animated GIF - Animation slows after save CS3

    Hello,
When Saving an animated GIF in Photoshop CS3 the animated frames slow when viewed after the save. Therefore any gradient fades etc seem to stutter, about 25% slower than the frame rate set initially.
When the animation is played in photoshop it plays at the right speed, only slows when viewing the file after saving...
    Any ideas?
    Many thanks
    Andy

I just experienced the same problem in Photoshop. 22 frames with "no delay" selected in all of them. When opening the animation in IE6 and Firefox it runs slower than the original.
Therefore, would you be kind to post it if you found a solution?
    Hope to hear something soon.
    Thanx!

  • Slow Finder refresh in 10.6.7

Has anyone else had a problem with Finder taking 20–30 seconds to refresh when new files are created in 10.6.7?
E.g., printing a document as a PDF to Desktop -- PDF does not immediately appear, but if the operation is tried again, I'm asked if I want to overwrite the existing file; so the file is there, but not yet visible. A few seconds later it pops up.

For general speeds issues here's what you want to try:
PRAM/NVRAM Reset: Turn on the computer holding CMD-Option-P-R (Command-Option-P-R) and keep holding until you get a second start up chime (more are perfectly alright)
Clear the caches: Go to each users home folder by opening up finder. Go into the Library folder and find a folder called Caches. Drag that into the trash. Do it for all users, restart and empty trash (files are still active so you can't delete until restart)
Then you want to go into Safari on each User and click on the word Safari in the top right hand corner. Go down to Reset Safari and have everything checked but: Reset topsites, clear history, remove other autofill form text, remove passwords
Shut down your computer, on boot it may be a bit slower because of all the resets it's auto regenerating a bunch of files, but over all your system should be faster
Specifically for you two, the caches folder removal is the most important
