Slow fios upload speeds in northern NJ

I have 50/50 internet but the upload speed is extremely slow.  Download speeds are usually somewhere between 50-60 mbps any time during the day.  Upload speeds are around 30 mbps during the mornings and in the evenings it gets as low as 5 mbps.
They replaced the box outside, inside, and also the modem...Still the same thing. The upload speed seems very consistent everyday being faster in the morning and slowing down in the evenings.
Is the service in my area oversold?  The only time I got 50 mbps upload speeds was on new years day(morning).
Verizon shouldn't advertise that upload speeds is the same as download.

Well, then I'm not sure what you expect to get from posting here.  In case you didn't notice, you're talking to peers here.  There are a bunch of network savvy folks here, but we can't help you if you don't give us details.  We only know what you tell us, nothing more.  if you're convinced the problem is in Verizon's network, then there is nothing we other users can do for you.
I suggest you try some large file transfers as well.  Speedtest sites are very useful tools, but sometimes real world testing is important too.  Some quick tests could be uploading movies to FaceBook or YouTube.  If you have other well connected servers you can use, try them too.
Remember that the Internet is ultimately a shared medium, regardless of what Verizon's marketing department says.  If you're testing through links that are loaded, then speed will drop.  Using other servers and test sites will help determine if some links are busier than others.
Enjoy.

  • Incredibly slow FTP upload speeds on Intel Macs with OS 10.5

I've been using FTP programs like Fetch and Vicomsoft FTP for years and recently bought two new Intel iMacs to add to my office. I still have my older G5 iMacs as well. We have an extremely high speed business class broadband connection and on the older iMacs that are running 10.4.11, our FTP connection through Fetch and Vicomsoft with them is absolutely super-fast with upload speeds of close to 300 kb/sec.
However, on the new iMacs, which are Intel Macs and run OS 10.5, the FTP upload connection is insanely slow, with upload connections of less than 30 kb/sec (yes, 10 times slower). It starts out fast at first (like all FTP connections) but then very rapidly slows to a maddening crawl of 30 kb/sec or less.
Anyone have any idea what this might be attributed to? Or anyone out there have the same problem? We are having to transfer everything to our older iMacs in order to upload, which is another huge time waste.
    Any help is appreciated.
BTW, on the new Intel Macs, we have tried using both Fetch 4.0.3 (which is the version we have on the older iMacs) as well as Fetch 5.3 and the same slowness problem exists for both.

  • Too slow down/uploading speed FTP + airport extreme b.s.

    Hi guys,
I've just switched form WIN to MAC...I've bought the Apple Powerbook 17" and Airport Extreme Base Station...I didn't have any problems with setting up airport extreme for connection to the Internet + I've connected PC and MAC wirelessly to the Internet.
Here's my problem...I've found out that the download speed from FTP server is to low (under 1 MB/s when using airport extreme).....while when I connect my PC to the Internet using LAN cable, the speed is about 6MB/s ....
    where's the problem?
Is there any possibility of raising the speed when using airpport extreme?
    Any ideas?
    Thank you

    Geoffrey,
I haven't gotten to the bottom of it yet - I am going to reset the base station and revert the firmware back to the second-to-latest version. I've heard there can be issues with the latest version.
I notice you're connecting wirelessly - that probably always will be slower but you can tweak your settings a bit - if you have 'enable interference robustness' on, you could try turning it off, there's also a speed setting there too.
My problem happens with it in wireless, yes, but weirder, working wired too - my adsl modem runs into the airport, then out to a router. Speed on a PC connected to that router seems ok, but all my macs are slow as anything, If I connect them directly to the ADSL modem, the speed improves - it seems to be an issue between the Extreme, and the macs - and, weirder still, some are on OSX.3.9 and some are on OS9.2.2

  • Q180: Slow download speeds even slower then upload speed?

Just looking for answers. I have recently brought a Q180, using it wifi upstairs. And I just upgraded to a DOCSIS 3.0 modem gateway (Moto SBG 6580) I have Charter as my IP I pay for data plus 30 Mbps download. My son's laptop, my HP laptop and my Mac book (used up stairs) all seems to have benefited from the upgraded modem. Showing 20-25 Mbps. Charter provides a webpage (speedtest.charter.com) to test your up/download speeds. The Q180 shows an average of 4 Mbps! And uploads of avg. 6 Mbps!? Q180 shows 811.N as selected and full signal strength of 54 Mbps?
Where could the chocking be coming from? How can I fine tune the Q? Any help would be really appreciated

that website for testing is crap i have tested mine and i get http://speedtest.ookla.com/result/1593897921.png 20mb down and 3.5mb up and i am on 50mb down and 5mb up
try something like speedtest.net and also do a pingtest.net
even speedtest shows my speed as 35mb and 4mb a little better but i am in the uk

  • Very Slow Download/Upload Speed

I have the Turbo service (5MBps - 7.1MBps). I check speedtest and 192.168.1.1 and they tell me : Speed (Down/Up):  5883 Kbits/sec by 863 Kbits/sec, which is fine with me. The problem is though, my download speeds are never above 600 Kbits/sec. I plugged my phone line directly into my Verizon box outside and get the same speed. What could be the problem?
    Some Info :
I tested this on three computures (Two with Windows 7 and one with Vista). I am also using a Westell 6100 modem.

To check this on Windows XP..
    a) Go to Start -> Run.
    b) Type in cmd and press enter.
    c) In the new window, called the command prompt, type in ipconfig /all and press enter.
This is, as noted at http://oit.ncsu.edu/resnet/ipconfig
For Windows Vista OR Windows 7, I believe like the way at http://oit.ncsu.edu/resnet/vista

  • IPad (and iPhone 4) upload speed on wi-fi very slow - any thoughts?

Both my "i devices" - an iPad and iPhone 4 are very slow for upload speeds on wi-fi. For example, here are the results of using speedtest.net on my iMac 21.5", iPhone 4 and iPad just now:
iMac: download 38.39 Mbps, upload 19.22 Mbps (so the wi-fi network itself has good upload speeds)
iPhone 4: download 21.17 Mbps, upload 0.39 Mbps (why so slow?!)
iPad: download 23.66 Mbps, upload 0.71 Mbps (why so slow?!)
The wireless router is an Airport Extreme updated to the latest firmware.
I've seen screenshots of other people's iPad and iPhone speedtest.net tests where the upload speed over wi-fi doesn't suffer compare to download like mine does, by a factor of 54!
I've seen postings here and there by people with similar problems. Are there any solutions? Are my iPad and iPhone 4 bad? Are they incompatible with my Airport Extreme? Are there "settings" somewhere that can help with the problem?
    Any advice would be appreciated.
    Thanks.
    doug

    Hi, Carolyn.
Perhaps so. Maybe there are certain kinds of connections which are better suited for iPads and iPhones than others. But the download speed on neither device seem to have problems. It's just the upload speed.
I did try several channels yesterday - 6 through 13 - but it didn't seem to make a difference.
Why would trashing my Mac preference files and restarting my Mac help anything? My Mac isn't having any problems.
Oh, by the by, on my iPhone at least I already tried resetting Network preferences. I even did a Reset > Erase All Content and Settings and re-installed my iPhone 4 from scratch. While still in a "vanilla state" before restoring from my backup, I tried testmyiphone.com via Safari and got similar results - very poor upload.
The 3G connection also fluctuates between "so so" (1-2 Mbps down, 0.8 Mbps up) and really horrible (0.2 Mbps down and 0.05 Mbps up).
I did just try your suggested "reset networks" on my iPad. This time I got a download of 13.26 Mbps and upload of 2.2 Mbps on the first test. On the 2nd test I got about the same download, but an upload speed of just 0.63 Mbps.
    So something's still wrong.

  • Why does Telstra slow uploads speed down

I have had ongoing issues with my internet connection over the last 18 mouths.Having a upload speed of 450/650 Kbps  very slow no good for gaming an down load of 8/11Mbps down load if more than I needTo the point I have spent good dollars try to insuring   that the infrastructures and the Asset Integrity with in house are in best condition this includes the replacement and work listed belowReplacement of the Wi-Fi system to a Cat.6 cabling at a cost of $2,300Replacement of the modem with a high speed 1G port modem at cost of $ 475Replacement of the fly-lead for the Telstra house connection to the new wall socket a cost of $360Total cost of $3135 this spend was braced on Telstra recommendation as the problem was with my part of the connection after a large number of call to my internet provider I at last had a appointment with a Telstra Tec to carry line testing and fault finding .At this point if no fault was found  I was the be billed at $60 per 15min or part off and travel cost as I live in Bullsbrook WA this may I high . Lucky for me a fault was found in the exchange and reconfigured and the speed and the Exchange improved   to 22Mbps down and 15 Mbps up an outstanding numbers >test at the house 15Mbps and so 5 / 7 Mbps loss for the Exchange to house don’t to good but still very happy with it BUT the upload was 650 kbps /750Kbps and please remember this testing was carry out by Telstra with good equipment so at this point I ask why the upload was so slow? After spending over $2000 and lot of time on the phone only to be told that Telstra slow the upload speed down so the max you can get is 1 Mbps and the only way you can increase this is by paying for a business line but you still may not get any more than 1MbpsThis is only a very small part of the story SO I LIKE TO ASK WHY IS TELSTRA SLOWING ME DOWNIf you like to know more please let me know

    Hi bigdave618,
The simple answer is, that's the way the system and hardware is designed, all ISP's are the same. Uploads are limited to around 1Mbps. If you wish to get higher upload speeds you can see if Cable Broadband or NBN are available in your area as these systems allow for higher upload speeds.
Upload speeds are generally slower than download speeds because of the fact that most internet connected equipment is asymmetric. Asymmetric means that any one packet of data can either go in, or out, but not both ways at the same time. Since most internet users are receiving more data than sending, the internet connected equipment has shifted the higher majority of the signals to go toward downloading.
If you wish to find out more about ADSL I have added a link to a Wikipedia article below along with the link to the NBN and Telstra websites so you can check to see if Cable Broadband or NBN is available in your area.
    ADSL Wiki article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asymmetric_digital_subscriber_line
Check for available Telstra Cable Broadband: https://www.telstra.com.au/broadband/home-broadband
Check to see if NBN is available in your area:  http://www.nbnco.com.au/connect-home-or-business/check-your-address.html

  • Extremely slow FiOS in MA

I have been experiencing extremely slow FiOS internet speeds for the last few days.
First I thought I was local, on my end, but after testing my wife's computer as well we are both getting results like this
...when we are normally at about 25 up/18 dn.
Router has been reset. Don't know if this is related to other issues I'm seeing on here with others. Any help?

I have not done anything further to any equipment or computer.
    Wonder what changed?
Probably changed the channel used by the wireless connection.  Maybe getting interference from wireless phone on other channel.
Odd that the verzon speedtest link doesn't work for you.  Appears to work OK for me and presumably others.

  • I have the airport extreme 802.11ac and I managed to get it working with verizon fios but the upload speed is slow

The 802.11ac router has a fast download speed, but the upload speed is half what it used to be. Am I doing something wrong?
I have the router in brigde mode and I have the fios actiontec Rev I router. I am love the router because it is consistent around my house.

Here is what helped for me. My comcast service stopped connecting. I started by shutting down the modem (sb6121) and the airport extreme ac, taking note of the DNS setting, then after a few minutes connecting.
I had to do it several times, and then, for some reason, the DNS settings changed, and things have been great ever since (knock on wood). I am not one of the experts on the innards of things around here, but my DNS settings got reset automatically, and the problem went away.
If it were to happen again, I would repeat the process, and if it persisted, I would change the DNS settings (network-advanced-dns). I could give you the settings that work for me, but I suspect they are really for those in Oregon. Check out your dns settings, write them down, and do a web search for appropriate dns for you.
Sorry, I don't understand this part of the tech world, but this is what worked for me.

  • Extreme slow upload speed in Dallas area

    Hello
Something happened to my upload speed last Thursday, it has dropped considerably connecting to most servers making many sites very sluggish. I have the hardest time just attaching a file in Gmail and the gmail chat keeps saying 'unable to connect'. Using FTP for my work is almost impossible. It's takes me 5-10 tries to upload a file that's not even 50KB.
I've called Verizon tech support and went through different diagnostics and then they sent a new router, which still didn't help. Here's what I concluded so far:
    It's not the router
It's not the computer since it happens on every machine
It's not the wiring since I can get good speed test connecting to some servers.
It's not the servers that i'm connecting to; everything works when i'm at work or on the phone.
I have 15/5, I've attached some speed test results.
Verizon's own speed test page even timed our during upload, which was stuck under 0.5 when it was about to finish.
Anyone else experiencing this? Verizon say my issue is currently with the engineers, but I have no idea how long that wait to be.
    Thank you

Is there any Verizon representative that can escalate my issue?
Basically a tech came last Saturday and wasn't able to figure out what was wrong and left and closed my ticket. Whenever I call back now they're just telling me it's my computer, which is completely FALSE. All my 5-6 computer just doesn't happen to have slow upload speed of the sudden and require modification to RWin buffer as the suggested by the on-site tech. Verizon phone support bluntly told me they can't do anything further and would charge me for coming out again to replicate my issue.
Things the tech have already tried:
-Run Fios Optimizer multiple times on multiple computers.
    -Replaced router
    -Replaced ONT
    -Rebooted PON card
Upload speed still sporadic, works perfect on some speedtests, but it's less than 0.5MB on many servers including Verizon's very own local speedtest. Gmail and any google site request is constantly slow. This site is slow and often times out. FTP to my own site is almost impossible if I want to upload a file that's bigger than 100kb.
I'm extremely frustrated.... There are reports of same exact issues in other thread, one seems to be fixed. Is there any way Verizon can look at that and apply it here?

hello I have 15/5 fios internet. My upload speed is extremely slow and it is affecting even browsing. I have a pc desktop windows 7 ~1 year old via ethernet to the router that was just sent to me by tech support to attempt to solve the problem. Any other ideas? I've reset the system and power cycled the router as well. Another note is that the upload speeds are fine on the laptop connected via wifi? Strange. So I presume it is a settings issue with my desktop?

I have run a trace route to your IP and one route indicates 67 RT (ms) and another indicates 78 RT (ms) from my location in Maryland, and from what I see you are in Tampa. Another good reason not to post your IP. It could be a security risk for you, even though your router acts as a firewall. The response times to you do not look bad, but perhaps after loading the new drivers, you may need to optimize your connection again.
Also try the faster speed test even if you only have 15/5, and see if it makes any difference.
Have you run the optimizer? You must open your Internet Explorer by right clicking on it and selecting run as administrator. Then copy and paste this url into the open browser.
