Slow fonts and others
This is perhaps more an observation than a question, but comments are welcome.
I had performance problems with TextEdit , where I could not highlight text very quickly. Holding down shift and doing arrow-up, it took close to a second for each line.
Suddenly everything went much quicker with new text, but the old text was still slow.
It seemed to depend on fonts: Helvetica - slow. Times - fast. Helvetica Neue - fast. Hiragino Kaku Gothic - slow. STHeiti - fast....
I quit TextEdit and went back in, and the problems were gone.
The only thing I can think of that may have caused the problem is that I had played with the typography panel, switching on and off things quickly scrolling between fonts with the arrow keys.
Has anyone else had a similar problem and perhaps a more elegant solution than to restart the application?
Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).

Finder fails to recognize fonts and other files
My Mac recently crashed beyond repair so I erased the disk and installed osx tiger, all updates, and all my applications. All apps run ok, files with extentions are associated properly, but all fonts and files without extensions are seen by the mac as 0kb unix executables. I cannot turn any fonts on with suitcase fusion or font book. I tried trashing the launch preference files and that did not work. Same problem with proprietary apps (such as my dongle viewer). My quark files without extentions also are not recognized properly. I really was hoping not to have to reinstall the operating system again. Any help is greatly apprieciated.

I searched for 'audio', which I thought was a more technical term than 'sound'.
I read the indicated specs for QT above. The MPEG shortcoming is not laid out there clearly in any sense. MPG is not listed as an export format, so from that I would conclude QT can't export to MPEG1.
It is clear in the Apple article. For it to be 'clear' to anyone right away, it should be added in one sentence to the relevant help section of QT: 'QT will not export files with some codecs because of their proprietary neature.'
Or it should be in a pop-up message as soon as you try to export an mpg: 'Because mpeg is ownded by someone else, export will only render video'.
I believe I asked a valid question, and provided a specific account of my problem, so this post will be useful for future browsers.
Because VisualHub dealt easily with mpg, I thought QT must too. I was wrong. -
Slow motion and other effects are grayed out
Just switched from iMovie 9 to 11, and can't take advantage of the slow motion, instant replay and other effects, because they are all grayed out in the Clip menu. Why? I do not see the "convert entire clip" option referred to in the help file. What is wrong?
Yes, that is it. The trailers are pretty scripted.
If you want to add an effect to a trailer, first complete the trailer.
Then, in the Project Library List view, right click on the trailer name, and select DUPLICATE. (This will give you a copy of the trailer in case you want to edit it some more.)
Then, with the trailer name still selected, click FILE/CONVERT TO PROJECT.
This will turn your trailer into a normal project, and you can use any of the capabilities of iMovie, including the slow motion and instant replay effects. -
Why are some websites very slow loading and others not
Some websites are very slow to load and others not. Doesn't seem to be any logic as to. The affected URL below is one that is very slow. I can understand if it is not an Aussie website. Having said that New York Stock Exchange website "http://www.nyse.com/about/listed/lcddata.html?ticker=DJI" loads quicker than the subject URL

Mac applications have blurry/fuzzy fonts and other display issues
About two days ago my MBP display started acting funny. To start, I noticed my itunes font started going blurry. The words in Word are fuzzy as well. Other apps like firefox and safari I can read just fine. Next, I noticed this (http://i.imgur.com/Hfhq0.png) happening. When I move a window in any application the window would automatically start getting larger. Next, this (http://i.imgur.com/6ySCT.png) became an issue. Notice the white at the bottom of the box. Finally this (http://i.imgur.com/wYdUe.png) reared it ugly head in firefox. I have no idea what's going on. Other forums and google have been no help at all and you guys are my final hope. If you need any more information please let me know. Thanks in advance for saving my baby.
OK I don't use a two-button mouse but control-click brings up that window for me and it displays fine just pulling the background image as the border with no white space ...
I'd guess it's something related to the background image you're using, have you tested the effect when you go back to a plain colour or an Apple supplied background ? What format is the image you've set as background png, jpg or something unusual ? -

Make sure that the editor that you use to compose the text is in plain text mode.

Microsoft Excel slowing down and other problems when SAP BPC EPM Add-in is installed
Hello,
Our client is having some problems with Microsoft Excel (MS Office 2013) since the SAP BPC EPM Add-in was installed in their computers.
They are suffering from Microsoft Excel slowing down, even when not connected to SAP BPC (10.0 NW version).
For example, when opening two or more excel archives, not connected to SAP BPC, Microsoft Excel crashes and is restarted with errors.
Have you experienced something similar in other installations?

LaTeX (AUCTeX) strange fonts and other problems
It appears that I'm missing some latex fonts because things are looking weird. The top is what I currently have, the bottom is an old document:
I've recently reinstalled arch and now my latex/auctex stuff seems to be very disagreeable even though I have the most recent versions of each package. I cannot change my default viewer from evince (http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php? … 64#p726264) and the old shortcut for it no longer works. My knowledge of emacs customization is very basic so if someone could please point me in the right direction, I'd be very grateful.

It appears like I'm using AUCTeX from what I can tell (addition of pdflatex/pdfview buttons in gnu emacs). I just reinstalled it and pacman told me of two additional lines to add to my .emacs file so it now looks like, where the bolded lines are the ones I just added:

Slow Response and Other Problems
In recent days I have been having several problems. Some times programs will not quit on force quit instead I get the spinning colored ball. If I try to reboot it may take a long time (10 minutes or more). Today the printer would say printing in progress but it would not print. Then I have noticed some of the icons in the dock appear as a blank square. After rebooting today, I was able to print.
Check out the full list of repairing, maintenance, backing up, diagnosing a system and disk drive. There are also those "10 Step" programs to keeping a mac healthy, and always, "how to safely update your system" to avoid problems.
It is almost always due to a pre-existing problem, unless there is some software that is now out of date that needs to be updated.
You'll want a backup drive and a 2nd emergency boot disk. At the worst, you may need to do a full reinstall. And might want to erase + zero-all the drive in the process.
At the least, run FSCK from Single User Mode on startup. If you have Applejack installed, use that. If you have not verified if the drive needs to be repaired (not permissions, though that too) do so (but never ever use an older version of Disk Utility from earlier than 10.4.3). -
Horizontal lines, slow boot and other problems...
Lately our iMac has developed a few issues. For starters there seems to be horizontal lines that appear randomly on the desktop, in programs like safari, firefox and just about any other programs. They seem to be completely random and actually seem to happen more under my user name than my wife's. I've also noticed that booting up takes a heck of alot more time than it used to. I can even boot up my aging PC faster than this. Also the overall performance seems sluggish. I've also noticed that the screen dims all the time. I could be watching a 3min movie on youtube and have the screen dim. We've never changed any settings and I can't see any reason behind this.
I've verified and repaired file permissions, but don't know where else to go from there. I'm much more used to fixing PC's than dealing with a Mac. Speaking of which....
Even though there are quite a few things I like about the iMac (we've had this one for about 2yrs now), I'm really beginning to doubt that they are worth the higher price tag. So far we've had both the mouse and keyboard just stop working (using a cheapo Logitech combo right now), can't stand that multiple users can't access the same pictures from iPhoto, and now these current problems. I guess my question is if this is normal for a Mac. I've always had problems with Windows, but they are easily fixed and never the hardware problems like I'm having with the Mac. We plan to get a notebook soon, but I'm wary of buying another mac.Welcome to Apple Discussions!

This is the sign of a lemon, so no, it is not normal of a Mac to do this. Run the hardware test that came with the Mac on its installer discs. If it detects nothing, point out the issue to an authorized service center.
The chances of it happening to a Mac are less, but by no means is it nil. That's what the warranty is for, if you keep good care of your machine. -

I am having issues related to storage and I believe this is causing my computer to slow down. "Other" files part is the major occupier(180 GB). I have done Omni disk and multiple other cleaning(iTunes-device, restart, etc), yet have not been able to empty any more space, nor to speed up my computer? Any suggestions? Is there a way to use color and other fonts when emailing or messages that isn't a hassle?
I would think that people are bored of same font and downloading from other app copy and paste is not ideal plus I want to add color to messages to signify importance of statement. Am I not finding an easy method? After all the emoji was added directly to keyboard, why can't it be that easy?
It's generally better to stick to plain text for email. Depending on the device an email gets read on, all that fancy formatting can look terrible or render the email unreadable. It can also slow the downloading of an email to a mobile device. Do your recipients a favor and don't weight your emails down.

I am using Illustrator CS5. I am using a certain font and when I make a selection to use one of the letter options or a glyph, it does not take my selection; in other words, nothing changes.
What font? What system? What Glyph? What language settings? Could be anything. Either way, ask in the AI forum. You'll get quicker answers there - if you provide all the required info.

Ios 5.0.1 crashing, slow and other problems
I am using an iPhone 4 running 5.0.1 and Im just fed up with it, as much as I loved the iPhone in the past Im afraid I have fallen out of love and I'm conteplating a breakup.
Problems I have had with the version 5.*.* update:
* Safari and the built in youtube app crash at least twice daily and other apps, most notably accuweather and Facebook also crash on a daily basis
* Pages/windows don't load properly, an example of this is the texting app, I open the app and select a converstation, the "messages" button, name and "edit" buttons apear at the top but the area that would disply the text conversation never changes to show the accutual text messages and only pressing the home button and reentering the messages app will fix this.
* I have had text messages compleatly disapear if I recive one while acitivly using the phone, mostly by pressing the home button or preforming other input at the same exact time I recive a text message. I get the popup notification dispalying the text of the message in the notifaction but when I go to reply to the message It is gone, like it never existed.
* Simply navagating the phone such as menus, back buttons, or loading apps is slow. I can out type the keyboard and in general the phone is becoming more and more usless. As an example, wakeing the phone with the home button takes upto a full two seconds for the unlock screen to open, then another full second for the phone to "think" before it unlocks. This is increadibly slow compaired to the previous versions, and much slower than my old iPhone 1 and my non-updated iPhone 3Gs
* I use to have a problem where the purple arrow indicated the phone was using location services about 50% of the time and it was the setting time zone feature. I disabled location services for this feature and it fixed the problem. I did not notice an abnormal battery drain with this problem.
* The keyboard will not hide and/or display at approprate times requireing me to restart the app.
* Notication sounds, mostly incoming SMS sounds dont play at approprate times or play twice a few seconds apart for the same incoming message
* Autocorrect is too easily learning misspelled words leading me to reset the keyboard dictionary too frequently
* Incoming email and SMS messages cause the phone to loudly vibrate while talking on the phone, this is a new problem with ios5. I use to be proud of the iphone for not doing this becasue I talk to people with androids and found the vibration noise very annoying while on the receving end.
My phone is rather clean and I have very few third party apps installed. I use the facebook app, a weather app, and only a few other apps. My storage memory is about half full and thats almost entirly music.
I regualry power cycle and restart my phone, I would say at least once a day.
I have tried to fix the phone by disableing and enableing anything I can find from notifications, location services and icloud and nothing has helped.
I have also tried rebilding the phone, both from a backup, and restored as new. I have taken the phone to an apple store and had them restore it as well, they claim to be able to restore "deeper" than what I can do at home, I assume this is similar to flashing the firmware and not just the software. Doing any kind of restore does seem to help with the speed problem for about 2 days as it slowly gets worse and returns to its ever slow and defective operation.
I have not noticed any problems with my ipad v1 running ios 5.0.1

Message was edited by: AtomicFlxHere's and update on my problems and here are are some screen shots of the types of problems I've been having since the v5.0.1 update. Keep in mind these are native apps and I have tried the rebuild phone crap many times, nothing helps.
This is screen shot of a what happened when I tried to use my camera one day, both the front and back cameras were all black. I had to power cycle the phone to get rid of this problem. The cameras appeared to be working correctly, I could focus and zoom but it was all black.
Here is an image of what happened when I searched for something in a map. This is after I picked the choice I wanted, the keyboard disappeared but the list didn't. I had to force close the app and restart it for this problem to go away. Who knew five bars on ATT was possible.
And finally this is the messaging app, although you would not know it. I had to return to home screen (after a long pause for it to process the button push) and return to the messaging app. This happens all the time with the messaging app and the notifications sounds drive me crazy. If i'm using the phone, say browsing the web and I get an incoming message its almost 100% of the time the messaging app will screw up. The sound will play at the wrong time or not at all, message will show up in notifications and diasapear in message app or Ill have a problem like this:
