Slow Gnome....

Noticed that Gnome desktop is slowing down, did have Openbox running under it but terminals were taking forever to open
Apps are now getting slower to open now
Has anyone noticed this?
Sorry if I do not have any more info, not sure where to look
TIA

i do have noticed it a little less responsive lately, im wondering if configuration files should be deleted after the upgrade to 2.20?
compared to gnome under ubuntu in a qemu-kvm virtual machine, gnome under archlinux is relatively a little less responsive opening applications... this is probably due to ubuntu's optimized caching and linking mechanisms... maybe....

  • Slow TTY, slow apps, improve compiling?

    Hello everyone!
I'm not sure if this is the right section, but I am a begginner after all, so I guess my doubts fit here
Q1: I installed and configured my Arch install on a pretty good machine, but I dont feel I'm getting all of it. I feel usage is a bit slow in launching applications such as Firefox or Nautilus.
I am using Openbox with some GNOME apps mainly.
Q2: Also, may be an unrelated matter, but the TTYs feel slow, and they're slow to display text, having a line-by-line effect.
    Specifications
    CPU - Intel Core 2 Quad Q9450 2,66GHz@3,20GHz
    Motherboard - Gigabyte GA-X48-DQ6
    Memory - 4 x Kingston HyperX 1GB 1066MHz DDR2
Q3: What should I do to make sure that all cores are being well-used, what are some packages I could compile locally that would enhance my performance?
    Thank you in advance!

My graphic card is a XFX NVIDIA GeForce 8600GT. I don't quite remember how I installed it, but I believe I followed this guide: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Nvidia
    Also,
    elros@blackpearl:~$ sudo pacman -Qs nvidia

Oh, and my /etc/hosts is properly configured.

  • Extremely unresponsive system during i/o load

    hello,
I have been using arch for a few years now and have been very happy with it, bar for one recurring problem that i have yet to fix.
during data transfers i suffer extremely slow system response times.
i have looked in the forum already and found a few threads. but have yet to actually find a solution.
example is when i have begun a data transfer of files from one hard drive to another. of any size from 4GB to 1000GB(many files usually from 200MB to 8GB in size)
i have tried ionice on transfers but has not seemed to make system any more responsive. ive had this problem initially on NTFS mounted drives transfering between other NTFS drives.
Recently i decided to scrap NTFS as it has been a long time since i have used the drives directly on a windows machine.
I am still experiencing the problem on EXT4 drives.
    my systems configuration:
    [smelly@^archive ~]$ uname -a
    Linux ^archive 2.6.32-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Tue Feb 23 19:43:46 CET 2010 x86_64 Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU X3350 @ 2.66GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux
Quad Core Xeon x3350(@3.6Ghz *seems to not matter if at stock or not)
    8GB DDRII RAM
    Asus Rampage Formula x48 M/B
    nVidia 9600GT
    1x250gb SATA WD WD2500AAKS-00VSA0(34GB ROOT,207GB HOME,8.2GB SWAP) - /dev/sda1,2,3
    1x1000GB SATA WD WD10EADS-00L5B1(EXT4) - /dev/sdb1
    1x1000GB SATA SG ST31000528AS(NTFS) - /dev/sdc1
    1x1000GB SATA WD WD10EACS-00D6B0(EXT4) /dev/sdd1
    1x1000GB SATA WD WD10EACS-00D6B0(NTFS) /dev/sde1
1xHotSwap SATA Bay that occasionally hosts a 1TB WD Drive.
I am currently changing over all drives to ext4 and am doing them one by one to allow for transferring data off and on again.
atm i am transferring off of one drive onto a free ext4 drive to allow me to convert the ntfs to ext4.
and am suffering this sluggishness. although i am doing the transfer in 50gb chunks. which seems to lower the pain.(although it may be in my head)
example of slowness. gnome-do takes 5-10seconds to appear where is would normally take less than ~1 second
opening pcmanfm takes around 5-10seconds also to open.(normally ~1s)
firefox may open within 10-20seconds whereas normally ~2-3s.
everything that i interact with is fairly slow. taking anywhere from 5s to 30+s to responde to my actions.
many times programs will claim unresponsive and will want to force quit. everything returns to speedy mc-speed-sys when data transfer finishes.
so hopefully anyone out there may be able to help me. as mentioned i have checked existing threads. *although i may have missed something.
i have tried swapoff(which seems to help the most, but it is still sluggish), tried different schedulers.anticipatory vs cfq, but that did little that i could tell.
transfer rates on these drives seem good. getting as high at 110MB/s read and about 80/90MB/s write.
io attempted to use ionice. but the problem still persisted. unless i was using it incorrectly..
hopefully someone out there has succeeded where i have not...
*i have had this problem since i first installed this system, i cant remember what kernel version that was on . but its been about 1 year + maybe a year and a half.
is there anybody else out there who has experienced/is experiencing the same probllems..?
*edit. using mix of xfce + lxde + compiz + gdm

For me it's Virtualbox. It uses kswapd even though I have tried to get rid of it for other processes by disabling swap.
According to iotop, in the first few seconds of launching VirtualBox kswapd0 uses about 20-40% IO. After that it goes to 0%. But some external heavy IO or something will make "Virtualbox's kswapd" go crazy and stay at 100% IO making the entire system unresponsive until Virtualbox is closed.
    kernel26 2.6.32
I have used -ck for a week when it was first out, I don't remember exactly how that went, but I'm pretty sure it had some kswapd hits as well.
EDIT: I am going to try -ck again. I also found a comment about disabling kswapd, so I did that as well - its init will now return 0 immediately (can't hurt to try, right?)
EDIT2: Don't remove kswapd! It worked well for a while but when I launched Virtualbox some really weird stuff happened.

  • [SOLVED] Slow desktop animation Gnome 3

This only happens with my nvidia gtx 460 with nvidia drivers. My laptop with open source intel works fine. The problem is that when I go to the activities with my notification area (bottom right) populated then the frames per second is horribly slow. When the notification area is empty then it works fine. Since the activities is pivotal to using gnome 3 it is the only thing stopping me from liking it and drives me crazy. I suspect it might be a problem with the way gnome works. Anyone have suggestions?

  • Gnome is extremely slow

Hi, I have a big problem. I come from debian where all works at a decent speed.
I have tryed archlinux with kdemod during one month and it worked greatly (but firefox lasts 30 seconds in open, while other kde aplications runned fast). I am trying gnome, and all, absolutely all, is really really slow. Desktop lasts 1 minute in charge (while in kdemod lasted 4-5 seconds), and all aplications, like firefox, pidgin, etc... all, run very very slowly, they lasts too much time to run. After run they works normally and fast, but I think that is not normal, for example, that gnome terminal lasts 20 seconds to open.
What must I do to improve the performance? I repeat, in kdemod konqueror, amarok, konsole... runs very fast but on gnome...
If you need some information ask me about.
    Greetings

As you can se the toogle button looks weird to. Its not my theme nor the Murrine engine.
This is how it should be:
I cant remeber doing anything out of the ordinary? It kinda just happend. I have no idea at all whats causing it, so I dont now how to debug the problem? I feel like a complete noob atm.

You can grep the date from the pacman.log output to show you what was upgraded on that day.
I meant about 2 days, it could be more or less. I've checked the log pretty thoroughly serveral days back but I cant find anything, but I dont trust myself either though.

  • Gnome incredebly slow

    Hi,
    I am using Archlinux amd64 with gnome3 on a good computer (i7 930, HD4850, 6GB,..).
When I now am working over 4 workspaces with different IDEs on each workspace and lots of chromium instances the workflow slows down.
I think this could be because of:
    1. Often using standby mode
    2. /home mounted over NFS
    3. full cache
    4. Gnome overwhelmed?
What could I do to improve the speed under average load?
    Regards

    Try adding
    # Kernel sysctl configuration
    vm.swappiness=1
    vm.vfs_cache_pressure=50
to your /etc/sysctl.conf. This forces linux to use more of the RAM before swapping to hard disk.
It improved system responsivness dramatically on my old Laptop with only 1 GB of ram and 1 GB of Swap Partion.
I also installed preload deamon which made my laptop even more responsive.

did you put your  "hostname" in "/etc/hosts" ?
i had the same problem many months ago and at that time i did not know you put hostname in /etc/hossts e.g. my hostname is "arch" (which resides in "/etc/rc.conf") and i put "arch" in "/etc/hosts" like this:
    127.0.0.1       arch          localhost
Holy crap thank you, I had totally forgot about that.  My computer was sssslow, thanks for reminding me.  Makes perfect sense why vim would take 2 secs to start...

  • Why is Gnome so slow?!

Hi, so I made a fresh install of Arch with the Gnome desktop. Really quick at first, but after a few days and restarts, Gnome is much slower now than it was before.. Opening small apps like terminal/liferea takes about 4-6 seconds (fresh install was 1-1,5)! A few apps installed (firefox3, pidgin, vlc etc), but just the basics. Compiz-Fusion and AWN starts on logging, but they barely take any mem or CPU.. I installed "preload" as I heard it would improve startup speed for commonly used apps. It's a bit disappointing as KDEmod is way faster and yet uses many larger apps (like Amarok (KDE) and Audacious (Gnome) uses about the same time to start).
Apps opens quite fast when they have been loaded once or twice though (1,5s or less).

Thanks, I did that, but didn't help much. Firefox, Terminal and Liferea etc is still slower to start than they were a few days ago (I feel it's gradually getting slower over time)..
    Here's my hosts file:
    # /etc/hosts: static lookup table for host names
    #<ip-address> <hostname.domain.org> <hostname>
    127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain myhost
    # End of file
I tried to add "localhost" before myhost as well, but didn't notice any difference then either. Hostname is set to myhost in rc.conf (and in terminalname).
