I have the latest Mac Air 13" and I have a Seagate 500MB external hard disk I cant copy or Cut any files on the hard disk and I cant even delete any files. I have the settings as Read and Write in the get info tab. Please helpand also note that my hard drive was formatted on a Windows 7 Laptop.

thats the problem, its in MSDos (Fat) or NTFS for Windows.
    Options.....
    1. offload all that data on the HD onto your PC, THEN format the HD in EXFAT for use on BOTH PC and Mac for read/write.....then reload all (or as you need) that data back onto the HD
    2. get another HD, and format it for Mac OSX extended journaled.
    FAT32 (File Allocation Table)
Read/Write FAT32 from both native Windows and native Mac OS X.
    Maximum file size: 4GB.
    Maximum volume size: 2TB
You can use this format if you share the drive between Mac OS X and Windows computers and have no files larger than 4GB.
    NTFS (Windows NT File System)
    Read/Write NTFS from native Windows.
Read only NTFS from native Mac OS X
To Read/Write/Format NTFS from Mac OS X, here are some alternatives:
For Mac OS X 10.4 or later (32 or 64-bit), install Paragon (approx $20) (Best Choice for Lion)
Native NTFS support can be enabled in Snow Leopard and Lion, but is not advisable, due to instability.
AirPort Extreme (802.11n) and Time Capsule do not support NTFS
    Maximum file size: 16 TB
    Maximum volume size: 256TB
You can use this format if you routinely share a drive with multiple Windows systems.
HFS+     ((((MAC FORMAT)))  (Hierarchical File System, a.k.a. Mac OS Extended (Journaled) Don't use case-sensitive)
    Read/Write HFS+ from native Mac OS X
Required for Time Machine or Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper! backups of Mac internal hard drive.
To Read HFS+ (but not Write) from Windows, Install HFSExplorer
    Maximum file size: 8EiB
    Maximum volume size: 8EiB
You can use this format if you only use the drive with Mac OS X, or use it for backups of your Mac OS X internal drive, or if you only share it with one Windows PC (with MacDrive installed on the PC)
EXFAT (FAT64)    ------Can read/write from both PC and Mac
Supported in Mac OS X only in 10.6.5 or later.
Not all Windows versions support exFAT.
    exFAT (Extended File Allocation Table)
AirPort Extreme (802.11n) and Time Capsule do not support exFAT
    Maximum file size: 16 EiB
    Maximum volume size: 64 ZiB
You can use this format if it is supported by all computers with which you intend to share the drive.  See "disadvantages" for details.

  • Can't access Time Capsule's hard disk after Lion upgrade

I haven't been able to access my TC's hard disk after I upgraded to Lion.
I used to manually backup files to the volume but I can't do it anymore. I can't see the disk in the Finder's sidebar. Devices are all checked in Finder's preferences for sidebar and my WiFi/Internet works fine. Airport Utility doesn't show any problems and upgraded to OS X 10.7.1 but still no luck. I also tried to hook my laptop with ethernet cable and my TC but it didn't work either.
    Any ideas?

I'm new to Time Capsule, but I think I have the same problem. I thought I could use Time Capsule as a hard drive, but it comes on and off in my finder. Is this normal?

  • Macbook Pro is extremely slow, hard disk in low-power mode and wont accelerate even while attempting to play a game

Very recently my Macbook has been acting really slow. Normally whenever i play a game, it starts off slow then after i hear the fan spinning it begins to speed up. Its like a high-performance mode when the hard disk start running faster. However, my Mac's hard disks seem to be stuck in sleep because whenever i start a game, the fan doesn't spin fast and it acts like when i start my Mac or when i'm at critical battery and it shuts the hard disks off. I've never had this happen to me before and i can't play any games because its so slow. I have tried reseting the SMC and nothing happened. I unchecked "put hard disks to sleep when possible" in power saver options but it's still stuck in a power-saver mode. I really don't know what to do and i would appreciate some help as quickly as possible. Here are my specs:
    OS X Yosemite
    Version 10.10
    MacBook Pro (13-inch, Late 2011)
Processor     2.4 GHz Intel Core i5
    Memory     4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics     Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB
    Serial Number     C1*******V13

Ok, sorry about taking so long to respond, i was out doing some errands. So i started up my computer and ran League of Legends since it is a game i often play a lot. After starting it and loading into a game i still had the same problem. Processor seems to be napping practically since i couldn't hear the fan spinning faster like it normally does and i was averaging about 15 fps to my normal 60 to 70-ish. I had the Console opened and here is what i have:

Oh and i'm also going to try verifying the disk on disk utility now.

  • New hard disk after time machine restore doesn't boot, NEED HELP

    Hi,
I just bought a new hard disk for my computer and it works fine if you just install the OS X, but every time I do a restore from my time machine I received a screen after the boot that tells the following:
"You need to restart your computer, hold on the power button until it turns off, then press the power button again."
This message appears in many languages, I do the restart and the same message comes again every time.
I already tried the disk utility when I boot with the OS X DVD and says that the disk is ok. I also tried a PRAM reset.
The result is the same message.
Does any body knows what I am doing wrong or why is this happens?
    thanks for any help

This is a kernel panic. They are often, but not exclusively, hardware related. Some reading for you:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1392
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html
If this only happens after a full restore from TM, that might suggest something you are copying back over is causing the problem. You may want to ask in the Snow Leopard TM forums about how to identify the culprit, or do a partial restore that might skip the system files likely to cause a panic:

    Good luck!

  • [BUG?] "Turn off Hard Disk after - NEVER " Does not work ?

    Hi,
I was using last 2 builds of Windows 10 Tech preview x64, and found this weird behaviour. I've updated to this new 9926 build, clean installation, and it happened again:
I have Windows installed on my SSD, and I have several other Hard Disks (internal ones) connected. Whenever I try to search files inside any of those HDDs, they have to turn themselves on, which causes a 2-3 sec lag, and then allow me to continue. When I'm
done working inside them, and some minutes pass, they turn themselves back off again.
I do know theres an power management option called "Turn Hard Disk off after..." and I have chosen it to be at NEVER. But it's not working.
Has anyone had same problem? Is it a known bug or something? Any way to fix this?
Thank you for your time, and forgive my level of english.

    Chris,
These steps from a recent post by AndyO should help:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8451257&#8451257
+"Your problem may be that the new hard drive in your mini is not yet prepared correctly for the MacOS installer to recognise it.+
+"Once you are booted to the installer disk, instead of attempting an install, open Disk Utility in the Utilities menu. If the drive doesn't show up on the left, it is not correctly installed, and you will need to open the system up again and check that it is connected correctly. If it shows up in Disk Utility, you need to partition and format it correctly. To do that, click on the drive in Disk Utility to select it, then click the Partition tab. Under 'Volume Scheme, select a single volume, then click the Options button to bring up the partitioning choices. For a G4 mini, you want to select Apple Partition Map. Click OK to confirm and it will partition the drive and should also format it as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Once that is done, you should then be able to run the MacOS installer which will then recognise the drive and allow the install.+
+"For reference, a G4 (PPC) Mac, (including the original minis) require Apple Partition Map partitioning, and Mac OS Extended (Journaled) formatting for a MacOS installer to recognise them.+
+"Intel Macs (including later minis) require GUID partitioning and Mac OS Extended (Journaled) formatting. "+

  • Cannot delete files from hard disk (after deleting from playlists)!

all of a sudden itunes stopped allowing me to automatically delete (with the warning) a downloaded podcast so I would have to go to the hard disk manually to delte the posdcast.
How do I get the system back to what it was where I delete a podcast and then get the warning and say ok to delete from hard disk?
    TIA!

    Hi Chris:
    2 part response:
I founf the problem--somehow my itunes folder was moved to a different part of my hard drive--once I moved it back I can delete.
I can delete as follows: when I right click and click on delete, I first delete the file from itunes library--then I get prompted if I want to delete from my hard disk by sending file to recycle bin--There is also a prompt if I do not want to see the warning--which I have on as a safety precaution. So I bet the default could remove from playlist and send file to recycle bin in one move.

  • Slow hard disk access --- still wonky

    Hi,
Recently i've noticed that hard disk access has become very laggy, to the point
    where it's driving me crazy.
For example, if i want to tab-complete through my directories, i have to wait a
few seconds each time.  Similarly with saving files in vim, or just using
firefox, which seems to suffer frequent hangs while the disk is spinning.
I tried downgrading the kernel to 3.4.something, to no avail (it definitely used
to work just fine with the old kernels).  I've also tried adding "commit=60" to
my fstab to reduce journalling access.
I ran bonnie++ and the following results came back:

    t
which (by comparison with other results i've seen online) seem to indicate
    there's nothing particularly wrong with the disk (it's a toshiba 7200rpm, i
    think).
So i'm at a bit of a loss what to do next.  I've attached my dmesg output.  If
anyone has any suggestions, that would be awesome.

  • Problem with Hard Disk after getting a replacement for a RAM Problem

Ok, so I bought a 17" Macbook pro about a week ago from Apple, then last night it crashed during some relatively processor intensive work and wouldn't boot again. I took it in to the apple store today, they ran diagnositics and it turned out it was a RAM issue, so, very kindly, they gave me a whole new machine with new RAM.
I didn't have time to wait in store for them to transfer my data, so the genius offered to give me the hard disk from my old machine so i could take it away and do the transfer myself (because i live in a different city) using a USB Hard Disk Caddy. I took him up on the offer, and bought the whole lot home with me.
I've just put the drive in an appropriate hard disk caddy and attached it to my machine, but I'm getting an error "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer".
Allegedly the genius chap had already started the transfer when i asked him to leave it for me to do, so i guess he mustn't have had any problems with accessing it, but there's no trace on the new machine that he had been doing anything.
    I guess my question is
    A) is the disk screwed
    and
    B) Did it happen from the initial problem, in the apple store or is it another issue?

This could be caused by a number of different reasons. Is it possible for you to call up Apple and speak with the person whom was helping you?

  • MacBook Pro + Time Capsule = Slow Hard Disk Access..

    Hi,
I know it's an issue with my MBP as my imac is fine with my TC
Basically connections fail, are sometimes not possible and accessing D/L and Up/L files is so slow I can't even watch a movie from my TC..
It's only a problem with my MBP though, my other computer is fine..
I know I could do a re-install of OSX Lion but.. that's a major chore for me..
I have degraged my comp, used Onyx, I have no viruses and everything is fully updated..
    Any suggestions?

    wheretofindmatt wrote:
OK so, I bit the bullet and did a CLEAN install of my OSX.. Problem solved, just wish it didn't have to be the way!
Clean install is definitely required.. the very idea of upgrade installs have never worked properly AFAIK.. you can patch an OS not upgrade to a new one..
Thanks for relating your experience.. I have been telling people for a while to do clean install to fix Lion issues with TC.. makes me so pleased to be still on SL.

  • Broken hard disk after 6 months

My Toshiba harddisk had a spontaneous breakdown this afternoon, and had to be replaced. Who has had the same problem??

When you consider what's going on inside a hard drive, it's pretty amazing that they're as reliable as they are. Unfortunately, like any mechanical device, they will fail from time to time. As always, be sure to keep some sort of back up on an external drive just to be safe. A bootable clone is a great option as if your internal drive fails, you can be up and running in just the amount of time it takes to reboot your machine. That way you're not totally stuck until you can replace the internal drive.

Hi Baz, thanks for your reply.
POST still fails when PSU is in combined mode. I don't have a second stick of DDR available right now (am trying to borrow some from a friend) , but i have tried just using one stick (once with each stick in case one was faulty) and still I got the 4 red LEDs on the D-LED panel.
could try the other ram slots on the mobo i guess in case that makes a difference.

  • Can you clone your old Windows XP hard disk?

    Hi,
After many months, one of my best friends finally converted to the Mac. She bought an iMac (Intel Core Duo 2.16GHz/1G RAM/Leopard) and she is delighted.
Now, she needs her Windows Software for her business (which is not available for the Mac) and therefore wants to install Windows under Boot Camp. She currently has XP SP2 (Home Edition).
Instead of re-installing everything from scratch, is it possible to "clone" the Windows hard disk and then copy this clone into Boot Camp???
    Thanks in advance

Sorry, just realised this is the wrong question for this part of the forum...
Ignore, I'll post in the correct one.
    Apologies again

  • Hard Disk Wonderment????

    Hi guys,
I was wondering if i could have some peoples advice.
I currently use a macbook pro with a 100 gig 7200 rpm Hard Disk, i use it for music production using logic 8.
Im finding that with the amount of the work i'm currently doing (especially now i've started working on soundtracks for animations), my hard disk has gotten very full very quickly.
Im thinking of upgrading it to a much bigger (but slower) hard-disk for eg the 250 GIG 5400 RPM drive / or 300 GIG 4200 RPM drive.
Does anyone know if i will lose alot on performance with the slower RPM as i use alot of samples au units / audio and videos from the hard-disk simultaniously, and currently the system is INCREDIBLE fast and i have no problems at all.
If any has any info of this then it would be greatly appreciated!
    Kind Regards

    Welcome to Apple Discussions sheepstarr.
The gain you get with a larger internal drive will not be enough for what you are likely to create.
I would suggest a large external firewire drive would be your best option. If you need portability I would recommend that you use the external drive to store all music files and just transfer the current necessities to the internal drive when leaving home.
The advantage of the firewire is that you won't lose any performance that will be noticeable. External drives are relatively cheap - in England? - I'm not sure, but they ought to be! They are also quite fast and you can easily go to 1 or more terabytes capacity. It can also serve as a backup for other files.
If you want even better performance and have the money get an eSATA card for the Express slot and a compatible hard drive.
