Slow HD Copy Speed
Hi i have a MSI Neo 925X, my primary drive is a 200GB SATA Maxtor, then i have one 80 GB Segate.
When is connet the 80 GB to the Blue plug, and even if the boot order is selected to boot from the SATA, it just doesn't boot from it, it keep on saying Please insert Boot disk. Thus i have connected the 80 GB 2 one of the yellow IDE ports, now only my DVD Writer is conneted to the Blue port.
I Windows Xp Pro SP2, i takes my about 30 - 40 to copy stuff from a dvd, and it take about 2 - 4 hour to copy about 10 GB worth of data, please help, i have checked, and i have check, Auto detection for DMA is enabled, and DMA is selected.
well wat speed is the 80 gig ata 66 ata 100 ata 133. If it was say 66 i can see it taking 2-4 hrs to send 10 gigs. You can only go as fast as your slowest hd. A trick that might let you connect the 80gig to blue is copy your boot.ini to it from your other drive and it should boot my boot.ini is stored on a 30gig were my os is on a 160 but if i delete the 30gigs boot.ini i get problems like you with booting.

Hello, I can't ul or dl files from client to me or vice-versa faster than 70kbs. Both connections are static, both are 7mbs up and 2.5+mbs down and both isps have assured me that no throttling is taking place. Ports are set correctly, encryption is off for file copy; I am only one guy managing one machine for my dear gray haired mother. The files are huge 300megs plus (.psds with necessary layers, etc.) but it doesn't seem to make any diff. if I copy 1 at a time or zip a bunch-- no faster than 70k and usually 50k. Routers on both ends say connected at 7up/2.5 down and any ftp client flies to and fro. It is just much more convenient to use ARD 3.2--
Gracias, DennisWelcome to the Discussions Dennis,
Are you using the Copy command while also Viewing or Controlling?
Things that I can think off of the top of my head that could be slowing things down (on one of the machines):
bandwith use from screen sharing
A FAT formatted drive
encrypted user or folder
difference in OS (10.5 to 10.4 - sad but true at times)
encrypted transfer (which you covered)
3rd party firewall / security sw
I've also seen where you may be able to do a good speed test, but due to router port forwarding using ARD to transfer files is slow, so that would be one other thing to check.
Sorry I don't have a know cause. I hope this helps, JD -
Extremely slow file copying over airport extreme network
Hi,
I have an Airport Extreme Base Station (10/100) network, also connected to the internet. When copying files from my MacBook Pro to a USB drive connected to the base station, OR when copying files to another computer (a windows machine) the throughput maxes out at about 700 KB/sec which is 10 times slower than when copying to the USB drive connected directly to my MacBook Pro. Although I have updated everything to the latest and greatest versions, I still have very slow file copy speeds. It's always been this way. I've read dozens of threads for potential fixes but none of them have helped. I am using Activity Monitor to measure the throughput and also timing the copy of a 10GB file. At these speeds, that file takes 4 hours. Useless.
My base station is within a few feet. I've tried different channels, 2.4GHz, 5GHz, getting rid of WPA, you name it. At first I thought it might be some issue with the USB drive connected to the base station, but copying to another computer on my network is the same. It is very frustrating.
Any insights would be greatly appreciated.Thanks. I thought about buying the TC but I'm worried that if my network is operating slowly, which it appears to be, that I'm not going to get the throughput. I also noticed that my windows machine which is on the same network accesses the internet faster as well. I'm wondering if it is something with my MacBook.
BTW - I went to school in Pittsburgh. Great great town. -
Copying speed of files has slowed down significantly
copying speed of files has slowed down significantly
and if initiate two different copy processes then it slows so much that 1 GB data takes time like it was 15GBAgain, it depends on file types. Sometimes Apple files are not single files but packages of many smaller files, for example the iPhoto Library. Right-click in Finder, if there's "Show Package Contents", then it is technically not a single file.
For simple file transfer from one machine to another per USB drive, it can save some time to zip the data before and after transfer to and from the USB drive. -
Errors and slow performance copying lots of files between large hard drives
After upgrading to Snow Leopard, I have VERY slow file transfer speed with external eSATA drives. While trying to upgrade from a 1.5TB drive to a new 2TB drive, the copy took almost 24 hours and then failed on a large Fusion virtual OS file.
So I removed my eSATA card from my Mac Pro and connected the drives via FireWire 800. Same issue. I have the 10.6.1 update and reset the PRAM with no improvement.
Tried doing the copy with SuperDuper, and I have the same speed issue, but checking their log I see some of the files that Finder tried to copy, SuperDuper found another way to copy. Others it fails on. Here's a log of one of the files it could copy (but Finder couldn't):

There is indeed plenty of space left on the device... over 1.5TB in fact.
Not sure what is going on here. I have 4GB of RAM, and heard Snow Leopard needs twice as much as Leopard. Am I running out of RAM due to the large amount of files? Or is it some incompatibility with large drives and Snow Leopard? I did not have these problems with Leopard, and I was using these same drives.I, too, am experiencing extremely long copy times (17 hours on 5GB) when copying numerous (200+) files from an external HD via FW 400. The same happens when I try to copy files using FW 800.
Is there anything I can do to reduce the copying times? -
Slow Files Copy File Server DFS Namespace
I have two file servers running on VM both servers are on different physical servers.
Both connect with dfs namespace.
The problem part is both servers never have same copy speed.
Sometime very slow files copy about 1MBps on FS01 and fast copy 12MBps on FS02.
Sometime fast on FS01 and slow on FS02.
Sometime both of them slow..
So as usual I reboot the servers. Doesn't work.
Then I reboot the DC01 also doesn't work. There is another brother DC02.
After I reboot DC02, one of the FS become normal and another FS still slow.
FS01 and FS02 randomly. They never get faster speed together.
Users never complain slow FS because 1MBps is acceptable for them to open word excel etc.,.
The HUGE problem is I don't have backup when the slow FS days.
The problem since two weeks I'm giving up fixing it myself and need help from you expert guys.
Thanks!
DC01, DC02, FS01, FS02 (Win 2012 and All VMs)Hi,
Since the slow copy is also occurred when you tried the direct copy from both shared folder, you could enable the disk write cache on the destination server to check the results.

Time Machine backup slow in copying phase
I've had a gander through Pondini's (excellent!) site and other locations, but still can't seem to get TM to backup at a regular pace.
I've got it connected via ethernet, but with about 500GB to backup and a copying speed that managed to do only 40GB in 14 hours, it's waaaaaay too slow. Current message says "Backing up: 44.01 GB of 499.82 GB"
I've done various things like removing Sophos for Mac, relaunching Finder, checking the Activity Monitor to see if there's anything hogging CPU, re-booted my My Book Live NAS and a few other things besides. Nothing's helped. Below is a copy/paste of details from EtreCheck. Can anyone help?

How slow is too slow when copying files?
Hi.
First of all I want to apologize if I posted this in the wrong section of the forum.
My question simply related to the speed of copying files from a mac to another computer/FireWire Drive/USB Drive etc...
I realize that depending on the medium you are accessing/writing/copying speeds will vary. But lately I have been getting the general impression that my MacBook has been getting slower at any rate with any of the above combinations. Two weeks ago I reinstalled OS X Tiger (erase&install) just to clean house, and since then I have been doing more copying back and forth than ever. So I am just curious if there is a way to measure or benchmark the actual copying speed (unlike benchmarking apps that send their own little packages) or settings I should be aware of to speed up the process a little.
Thanks in advance!I have copied large amounts of files repeatedly and I always get the same time associated by clock. 150 gig of files with FW 400 70 minutes. FW 800 50 minutes. USB forget it takes too long.

A way to solve hard drive with slow read write speed
Just to share.
Currently I am trying to upgrade my Mac Pro 2008, and replaced the 2TB startup disk with a 120GB OWC SSD. After the OS installation, I started to move my photo library to a bigger 2 TB hard drive in Bay 2.
After completion, I started to import the photos to Aperture 3, but it crashed and failed to complete. I had a feeling that something wrong with my hard drive that holding the picture files, therefore, I tried to copy the disk to an external Firewire Hard Disk, the copy was very slow and showing an effective copy speed of 2 MB/s.
Disk utility, repair permission did not help and proved it was ok.
I did a Google search, and a Mac user suggested to use an Apple software called "TechTool Deluxe", therefore, I might as well have a try.
After a few tests, it did show up an error and asked me whether I would like to repair it, so I clicked Ok.
It took a second to repair and now the copy speed showing 50 MB/s.Sounds like trouble with non system drive; with where the preference for where Aperture library is perhaps?
You have a couple backups of your drives in case you want to just update changes and reformat.
Is the old system drive and OS still around? might want to pull that. Eliminate confusion, cross-link of files or paths.
With SSD you want to clone and have a system image for restore - same as anytime, but even more so.
I've read but never understood the problems people have had with installing or cloning Mac OS to an SSD, but seems "real" nonetheless. And some problems with setting up Aperture was mentioned. -
Poor drive copy speed on 27" IMac??
I am a long time Mac user. My first was a 128. So I am not inexperienced with Macs. Rather than carry a computer back and forth to work, I have a computer at both at work and at home and carry my working files on an Aegis Apricorn mini Firewire 400 drive. I keep a backup of this drive at both locations. Recently I started using a 27" IMac at work. I have to use an adapter with the drive due to Apple switching to FW800. On older Macs with FW400 ports, I could backup 35 Gigs in about 25 minutes. Now this same backup takes 15 hours!
I have tried everything. I bought an Apricorn USB mini drive and tried using that. The backup requires 9 hours! The USB requires a similar amount of time on my older 24" IMac at home. From past experience, I would expect USB to be slower. My concern here is that I am guessing the fact that there is no longer a true FW400 port is the root of my problem. I suspected it could be the adpater. So I bought a different brand. Same result.
I spent an hour and a half on the phone with Apple the other day. No help. They pushed me up to an engineer. We went through everything and he agreed that the copy times were ridiculous. He took my email address and said he wanted to check this out further and would send me an email with a phone number to reach him. He never sent the email. I am getting VERY frustrated. We bought four 27" IMacs and all are having issues with slow internet speeds (one third the speed of Windows computers)and slow copy speeds to external drives. All are running 10.6.3.
Has anyone experienced this problem? Better yet... Is there a solution? We intended to expand the use of Macs in our office. Now unless we fix these problems... Nobody will want them.Resolved this one myself with the help of a previous post. These Apricorn drives are formatted as FAT32. As soon as I formatted it to Mac OS Extended, everything was fine.

Slow firewire 800 speeds on early 2008 macbook pro 17"
I've got an early 2008 macbook pro 17". I'm transferring files between a WD mybook studio II (2TB) configured as raid-1 to a sata dock with a seagate 1TB drive daisy-chained over firewire 800. both 1TB drives in the WD mybook and the 1TB seagate in the sata dock are 7.2k rpm. I'm running a block-level clone FROM the mybook TO the seagate using Carbon Copy Cloner which i would think would be the fastest real-world test i could do. I'm getting pegged speeds of 40MB/s. This is on par with other regular read/write speeds i've noticed in the past. this seems way off. to remove variables i unplugged my two firewire 400 drives (as i've heard that may slow things down, even though they're not doing anything during the clone) and it SLOWED DOWN the fw800 clone to 38MB/s ! plugging the two firewire 400 drives back in during the clone brought the speeds back up to 40MB/s. i don't have a unibody 2009 mbp that had the firewire issues.
1) HDD's should read at 70-80MB/s and at least write at 59 MB/s, why am i not getting that using firewire 800 and two 7200 rpm drives ?? (i know the wd mybook is raid-1 but i'm reading from it...shouldn't effect read performance)
2) (less important) why on earth would having two firewire 400 drives plugged in and inactive make the firewire 800 transfer speeds go up/down 2MB/s
i'm willing to experiment with anyone's suggestions. huge thanks in advance.i have a similar problem.
i have a new seagate freeagent 1tb drive w/FW800, FW400 and USB2.0 ports, and its connected via the FW800 port/cable to my macbook pro, and read/write speeds are really slow, particularly read speeds.
i'm currently working on an audio project with around 15 audio tracks running at once, and it chokes the drive ('HD overload' errors), so i've done some benchmark testing using Drive Genius and Xbench. the results show that the drive is averaging around 12mb/s read speed, and around 26mb/s write speed. grim.
i tried the drive with the FW400 connection on my missus' old imac g5, and its much faster than my mbp's FW800 connection, so i decided to try the drive back on my machine with OSX booted in Safe mode, and benchmark it again. the results are massively different; the FW800 connection is very fast (as you'd expect).
both the tests were done with all my peripherals attached (usb hub, ethernet cable, usb2 ext. drive) so i don't think the problem is with those.
what i'm wondering is if there are any known system extensions that can screw with the FW bus speeds? if not, any pointers as to where i should start troubleshooting?
many thanks! -
How can I measure the copy speed of my compact flashcard to folder?
how can I measure the copy speed of my compact flashcard to folder?
I dont have a stop watch.Hi Steve Zavodny;
Generally compact flash cards or basically slow because of them being flash memory and USB. What are you after here?

G4 Xserve new drive copy speed
We have an older Xserve with 2 150 gig drives in it. Just got a new 250 gig added it to the third bay and notice the copy speeds from the old drives to the new drive is painfully slow. Is there a diff between the bays and how they are controlled?
Many---XServe-G4s-G5s-Flat iMacs-Windowz Mac OS X (10.4.4)No the 150s are not raided. Just stand alone drives. They are both IBM-IC35L060AVVA07-0. We bought them with the server. The new drive is a Hitachi HDS722525VLAT80. We have zeroed the drive and reformatted. Copying from the 150 to 150 is super fast. Copying from either 150 to the 250 is crazy slow.

Question on Firewire copy speeds (Help?)
My 2011 MacBook Pro 2.2/750/8 only has firewire 800. It seems my copy speeds are rather slow.
90gb > FW800 = 35 minutes
90gb > FW800/400 adapter = 1 Hour
Both instances are using a dedicated external HD or drive dock
Is this somewhat correct? Thanks though, for the reply.
I noticed the slower transfer rate on my first backup this past summer, but I thought it was just CCC's or Super Duper's indexing process.
Because of current HD prices, (& Instead of having to purchase another) I was consolidating data, (photos, backups from previous computers, etc.)
I was moving a single zipped/compressed file to arrive at the comparison in transfer speeds. My best guess, possibly a different chipset, or FW slightly "hobbled" because of the Thunderbolt port?
Just wondering if anyone else noticed this issue. -
