Slow HDD access and "clicking" noise

Hello,
I have built a computer based on the K7N2G series boards.
I have loaded on Windows XP and everything is fine except that the hard disk access is very slow.
This is because each time the computer accesses the master HDD (there is only 1 HDD), it makes a load "tap" before taking a small amount of data from the disk then pauses and "taps" again, gets data etc. It does this repeatedly until all the data needed has been accessed and then remains quiet.
I have tried the same hard drive in another machine as a slave drive and the problem does not occur when accessing data.
Is there a setting / jump I need to change?
I have checked the spec of the board and hard-disk for compatibility but have I missed something?
Is the board faulty? (he says doubtfully)

Hmm...might be a power issue, actually. I saw this problem on a PC I built for a client just last week. There was a molex divider, one going to a vid card (9800 Pro secondary power) and the other to the main HDD. Whenever data access was required, the drive would 'click' repeatedly and go very slow indeed (I first noticed it when loading a game, then it was nonstop and started to cause some disk errors now and then). All I did, actually, was tighten all the power cords, and that seemed to have solved the problem. Just to be on the safe side, I later went back and put the HDD on its own molex and (of course) made sure it was tight. Maybe my problem was unique, but...well I registered just to let you know...you never know, sometimes. :D

I have SharePoint 2013 enterprise using ADFS for authentication. I have an issue where the first time going to a site where you do not have access and clicking the back button you're returned to the root site instead of the site you

2) browse to

3) receive a message: you do not have access to this site ((oops went to the wrong location - I'll hit the back button))
4) click the browser back button
5) get returned to http://www.sharepoint.com/pages/home.aspx
This only happens the first time browsing to a site that I do not have rights to, after this I can browse to the same site and hit the browser back button and return to the correct site, or any other site that I do not have access to.
Any ideas as to why this happens? Ideas of where to start looking?

Hi Robert,
From your description, when you receive access denied message and hit back button in browser, it redirects you to the root site but not previous site. However, this just happens at the first time.
You may try to use some tool or check log which can tell us how does it handle the request when you hit the button. And compare the issue time and non-issue time.
I'd suggest you use Netmon tool:

That could be a clear sign of a damaged hard disk. Can you try and force the iPod into Disk Mode and then connect it to iTunes so you can attempt a restore or even a low level reformat of the iPod's HD/file system.

Horrible buzzing and clicking noise from the fan - DV6 3046eo

Two weeks ago the fan on my DV6 3046eo laptop began to make almost continueosly buzzing and clicking noise. My laptop is less than an year old (bought in December 2010) and such noise has never occurred before. I have done some "research" to find the reason, but without luck. I have read on Internet that the fan may be broken or loose. I am just using the web and listening the music. I have to admit I played some demanding games on the computer, like BBC2 and Dirt3. But the problem occured later. I can't imagine what will happen if I play games on my laptop now...
The fan seems to cool down the laptop, but it is like something is hitting it every third second or soand preventing it from running silently. The noise is strange and irritating because the frequency changes rapidly. Sometimes when I move the laptop or hit it a bit gently, the loud noise suddenly disappears and the normal continueosly noise takes over (I am ok with the latter one, though). After some while it appears again. The noise come and go. Reboot doesn't help much. I have also used an airspray can, but to no avail. I am thinking about getting the fan replaced by HP before the 1 year warranty runs out. I am not too comfortable to do so myself. What's the reason for this noise and what should I do?

Random restarting and clicking noises

My macbook crashed twice last night: black film telling me to restart and fan made clicking noises.
Please help- had just reconnected to the intenet after moving house and was logged into itunes when it happened. Bought Oct 2010 - never experiebced this please help.

If you're able to boot, launch the Console application by entering the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search, and select the most recent panic log under "System Diagnostic Reports." Post the contents -- the text, please, not a screenshot. For privacy’s sake, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID” and "Kernel UUID," two long strings of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header and body of the report. Please don't post "shutdownStall" or "hang" reports.
If you can't boot in the usual way, try a safe boot. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
During startup, you will see "Safe Boot" on the login screen, which appears even if you normally log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Safe mode is slower than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including your login items.

Too Hot, Going Blank, and Click Noises

I've read some of the previous posts on whining noises and noises in general, as well as those topics on heat.
I've had my MacBookPro since Mid-April and everything was going fine until Mid-August. At some point, the computer started making whirring noises. At first the whirring noises only happened when I had a lot of applications running and I was using up a lot of CPU. Now, even if all I have on is iChat, the whirring noises are consistently in the background. Turning on my Photobooth does nothing. Those whirring noises recently became clicking noises (like a game of Wheel of Fortune).
Especially when I run Photoshop 7.0, the whirring/clicking just gets really bad. Or if I'm watching a DVD. Can anyone explain to me what I should do to stop the noises and what I can do to save my mac? When I prop it up a bit so it's at a small 10 degree incline, the fans stop working as hard and I get a little less noise.
Next question. My mac is getting to be unbearably hot. I got my replacement battery for the recall, but that still hasn't changed anything. It gets so hot that I can't have it on my lap without feeling extremeley uncomfortable.
Every once in a while when I move my screens- specifically ichat screens, a little piece of my screen will turn into just a box of white pixels. It won't "fix" itself until I reboot. Anyone know what that is?
I'm planning on taking it into the MacStore soon to see if they can help me, but in the meantime is there anything I can do?
And I've never had AppleCare before... is it worth it?

i think your whirring noise come from the fans. they may be defective. i had the same noise, they replaced my fans. So go for repair.

Frozen Apple logo and Clicking noise

I reset the Ipod (I believe 5 generation) to factory settings, It now wont show up In I tunes or on my computer for that matter, and Just shows the applue logo and makes a clicking noise.

IPhone hearing aid t-coil (telecoil) compatibility and clicking noises

We happily received our new Verizon iPhone4 a week ago, but, with considerable disappointment, sent it back yesterday ...
This iPhone did not work with the t-coil on my wife's hearing aids. This subject has been discussed previously in these discussion groups, but suggestions like using TTY or adding bluetooth dongles to the hearing aids are simply not acceptable.
Here are some details ...
My wife wears two Oticon Synchro P hearing aids. They are about 4 years old. They are expensive hearing aids. They have a t-coil setting which she normally uses with telephones, and it works quite well with our Uniden land line phones and our old LG cell phones. The purpose of the t-coil is to inductively couple a telephone or other device to the hearing aid, rather than depending on acoustic coupling which often results in poor sound quality or lots of feedback. With my wife's hearing aids, when turned on, the t-coil does pick up some noise, more like a hum than white noise, but at an acceptable level. When we first tried the iPhone, just placing the iPhone speaker next to the ear with hearing aid with t-coil enabled, caused the noise/hum level to increase noticeably, to a level that was only marginally acceptable. There were other issues, as well.
Except for the noise increase, it did not seem to matter if the t-coil was turned on or off, i.e. there did not seem to be any inductive coupling through the t-coil. Essentially the coupling was acoustic, resulting in poor sound quality.
Last but certainly not least, we also got a loud clicking noise. Once again this was when the iPhone was next to the ear with the hearing aid with t-coil enabled. The noise sounds like a relay clicking, at a rate just slightly faster than I could count. This only occurred in the house, and was gone when we attempted to demonstrate the problem at a Verizon store. I took the iPhone back home determined to find the source of the clicking interference by turning off all the wireless phones and other electronics in the house. When I turned off my Linksys router, an old WRK54G model, the clicks went away. Okay, so I turned the router back on, and turned WIFI off on the iPhone - sure enough, no clicks. And there were no clicks when the t-coil was turned off, or when the iPhone was not in close proximity to the hearing aid (with or without WIFI enabled). So there is a interaction between the WIFI signal, the hearing aid t-coil, and the iPhone in combination.
Next, I tried changing the WIFI wireless channel on the router from channel 1 (2.417 Ghz), to channel 6 (2.442 Ghz), to channel 11 (2.467 Ghz) .. none of this helped, i.e. if WIFI was enabled on the iPhone, and the iPhone was near the hearing aid with t-coil enabled, the clicks were there and very loud.
Next, I looked at some of the router parameters, and noticed that the router sends a short preamble at a default interval of 100 msecs (10 per second) - roughly my guess of the click frequency. Changing this interval to 1000 msec (1 per second) did indeed change the frequency of the clicks to 1 per second!
My theory on this is that we were hearing all the WIFI packets, but most of it sounded like noise, and only the periodic preamble broadcasts were identifiable as clicks. Strange, eh ?
So what now ? Turn off WIFI on the iPhone? No. Change the preamble frequency permanently ? Probably not since I have no clue as to what effect that might have on the various WIFI devices that are used around here. Buy a different router ? Well, maybe, but the iPhone4 only supports 802.11 b/g/n on 2.4Ghz, so it's a toss-up whether or not a newer router would help. Buy new bluetooth hearing aids ? Not anytime soon. Buy the bluetooth add-on gizmo ? Probably not ... Few hearing impaired people really want all that hardware - they just want their t-coils to work.
In the end, we didn't try another unit ... we simply gave up and sent the iPhone back. Since we really like the iPhone, we'll wait until the iPhone5 comes out, try that, and if it doesn't work, we'll find an Android phone from LG or some other manufacturer that does work.

Apple says the iPhone4 CDMA has an M4,T4 (i.e. very good) rating for hearing aid compatibility, "Based on testing conducted by an independent laboratory following the ANSI standard C63.19, "American National Standard for Methods of Measurement of Compatibility between Wireless Communications Devices and Hearing Aids."" I think Apple needs to find a different lab, or do in-house testing of the top 10 hearing aids. A very large group of potential customers would appreciate it.

I installed the iOS 5 on my iPhone 4 and I enabled the "Hearing Aid Mode". The loud clicking noise went away so now my wife can use my phone with that option enable. She has the hearing aids.
Currently she has a Droid and can hear ok using the t-coil. She has never been able to use the iPhone with her T-switch because of the loud clicking noise.
So we got an iPhone 4S for her thinking that option would be available on the iPhone 4S (Hearing Aid Mode). She hears the loud clicking noise because the "Hearing Aid Mode" option is missing on the iPhone 4S (not sure why that option does not show up - see other post).
We are going to have to return the 4S since it does not work with her hearing aid :-(.
I guess another option is to give her my old iPhone 4 and I take the iPhone 4S :-). We only have 3 days to return the phone, so we may return the 4S and have her test my iphone 4 for a month or so to see if it really works.
So my comment is you may want to try an iPhone 4 again with iOS 5 installed and enable the "Hearing Aid Mode" option.

HT3131 Macbook pro + external display sleeps when lid closed and 'clicking' noise

Hi all, new mid-2012 macbook pro non-retina user, I have an PC external display with Microsoft USB wired keyboard and mouse pair (the keyboard and mouse are wireless but connected via a USB desktop receiver) but even when all connected up, shutting the mac lid always turns off external display too and no amount of pressing keys or mouse clicking wakes up the display again. External display only wakes up when I open the lid again. There's also a clicking noise from the mac every time I close the lid with external display connected. Any ideas? I've tried a number of things, wondering possibly if my cheapo (non-Apple) VGA external display to Minidisplayport adaptor is the culprit? Also, everytime I connect the display I have to go to display settings to get it to recognise the external display. I haven't installed any software for the USB mouse and keyboard , the macbook recognises it ok.

It sounds like you are having issues running your MacBook Pro in closed clamshell mode (computer closed but awake, connected to an external display). If possible, you may want to see if it behaves as expected when connected to a wired USB keyboard and mouse as outlined in the first section of the article; wireless USB (non-Bluetooth) keyboards may not be recognized by the system the same way for the purposes of running with the display closed.

MacBook Overheating and Clicking Noise

My MacBook has been incredibly sluggish, freezes all the time, gets really hot really fast and has been making a weird clicking noise. It's not the clicking noise when you move the computer around too fast from the HD but a different one. It's like someone is flicking the body of the MacBook. I've literally tried eveything but I have no idea what's going on. There's no virus, nothing is using up a large amount of space accroding to the activity monitor, I deleted all unnecessary files and repaired all the permissions as well as made sure the software is up to date. I'm using OS X 10.6.8. Any suggestions would be great!

Could be fan failure inside. That would explain the overheating and also the sound if the fanblades are hitting something as they spin.

Hard drive makes plunking and clicking noises after Firmware Update

My Macbook hard drive worked fine for 9 months until I installed the EFI Firmware Update 1.1 a few months ago. The hard drive then started making plunking or clicking noises every 30 seconds or so, which is beyond annoying. Eventually, I became worried, backed up my data and took it to Apple to get the hard drive replaced. They replaced my 120gb Toshiba drive with a new 120gb Fujitsu drive and it does the same exact thing.
Apparently the plunk is the sound of the drive head parking on the disk. I am now pretty certain nothing is wrong with my hard drives but something was changed during a Firmware or Software Update that tells my hard drive to park the disk head every 30 seconds. Ive found a few other similar cases on the internet. The drive seems to function fine otherwise.
I know two other people with Macbooks and their hard drives don't make the same noise as mine despite having the same drives. Ive tried two hard drives now, Ive tried various power settings, disk utility doesn't find any issues and performance hasn't suffered. Its just an incredibly irritating sound every 30 seconds that is driving me crazy.
I don't want to learn to just deal with it because its annoying and distracting, and is possibly something created from an update.
Anybody have any ideas?

None of the threads last year provided any "fixes" as far as I remember, the way people are attempting hacks above.
I had the parking-like sound (never found out if it really was parking) on three consecutive Seagate 80Gb drives in a first generation MacBook Core Duo. It would start after about a day and a half after receiving it, presumably after Spotlight had finished indexing and the drive was then being left idle. The drives were perfect otherwise, and whisper quiet (which made the thunking sound easier to hear). Finally the Apple Store in Brent Cross, London determined that the sound was normal, saying these newfangled smaller SATA drives make such sounds which are normal to their operation. I decided to drop my concern, because the drive (#3!) was working fine.
Your experience is interesting because it seems to relate the offending drive action to the EFI Firmware Update. In my own case my MacBook was replaced last month because of a different issue and the new one (Core 2 Duo – yay!) has a Hitachi 120 Gb which is noisier in general, but no clunks to be noticed yet.

hi, i bought the creative p5800 just recently and extended the cable wire by buying monster 6 guage speaker wire. anyways, sometimes it just makes high pitch noises when im not playing any sounds, and I was wondering if anyone could help me on that problem. thanks a lot.

Slow FTP upload and click-and-draggable DIVs?

Does anyone know how to set Dreamweaver to only upload files that have been changed? I imported a site I created before with an old version of Front Page, and it takes a long time to upload because it's not only uploading a bunch of files that have not been changed prior. Front Page was a lot faster in uploading since it only uploaded changed files.
Also, does anyone know how to make a DIV click-and-draggable? When I create a new DIV, I can't seem to move it without altering the underlying HTML. An imported page allows me to click and move the DIV though.

I don't know the answer to your first question, but I can answer the second one.
Use the menu at the top, and chose Insert -> Layout Objects -> AP Div. This will put an ap div on the page. Click on it
then click on the blue handle on the upper left corner. Now drag it by the blue handle. The key is to drag by the handle.
I don't think this works on anything other than ap divs.

Clicking noise and freezing during updating

Hello everyone, if anyone could help with the following problem i'd be more than grateful. my ipod recently wouldnt connect to windows and started making a clicking noise. to try an resolve this i have reset and restored. I thought this would solve the problem. However, when ipod is updating it seems to freeze, stop updating and clicking noise starts. the following message appears
the specified I/O operation on E: was not completed before the time out period expired.
the only way i can disconnect is to shut the computer down. My playlists appear but with no songs.
this is my 2nd ipod (clicking noise also happened so ipod was replaced in warranty) which is now out of warranty. I think my hard drive might be giving up? These discussions are my last hope! Do I buy a new ipod (possibly for the same thing to happen)? or is it worth getting it serviced? Does anyone out there have any ideas?

Even i have a Ipod with a click wheel and is behaving similarly.
Once i connect it to the PC (using USB) it shows the "Do Not Disconnect" sign forever and even iTunes does not recognize it, the hard disk is making some clicking noise and after some time windows returns timeout error "The specified I/O operation on E: was not completed before the time out period expired" !!
I think we are in the same boat, What do we do ???
