Slow- i hate leopard

imac 17. 56 of 80g used
extremely slow. ten hours for initial backup. after that makes my mac literally crawl. take ten seconds to minimize a window.
turned it off for a month. turn back on and 6 hours later it says i need 30g additional space. same 56 of 80 as before.
off subject: i appreciate/use ZERO new features introduced by Leopard. foolishly swindled

Are you backing up Time Machine to an external hard drive or just to another partition on the same drive? How much system RAM does your iMac have? Since the slow down started was there any programs you recently installed? Have you considered bringing your system in for repair inspection?
As for feeling swindled the only thing Apple is accountable for is removing Leopard's ability to perform backups over WIFI when using Time Machine. This feature was announced during the keynote and prior to the release of Leopard but for some reason Apple crippled the feature and are now releasing Time Capsule as the solution. Hopefully we'll see an update to fix this issue. Anyway, you could of played with Leopard prior to making your purchase as not only Apple stores but several authorized resellers allow customers to play with the OS on a system and answer any questions prior to purchase.

Something is seriously wrong with your installation or you are critically low on RAM, like below 2 GB.
How much RAM is in your machine?
    Have you tried a Recovery?

Why is emptying trash so slow in Snow Leopard!?
    t

Have you just upgraded by the sound of it? Snow Leopard's trash is fine here.
Check to see if your Finder Preferences > Advanced tab has Empty Trash securely selected. That will slow things down. If so, deselect it to speed things up.

  • Slow Performance after Leopard 10.5.2. Update

After updating to Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.2, I have encountered performance issues that I suspect are related to my Creative Suite applications.
I find that after a reboot, my system performs pretty well, but over time (a day or two) it starts to slow down dramatically. Using Activity Monitor to look for clues, I noticed what seems an inordinate number of "MSGS SENT" by several applications, e.g.:
Photoshop CS3 is running in the background with a document open, and it's sending about 100 Msgs per second.
Illustrator CS3 is running in te background with no document open, and it's sending about 500 Msgs per second
Unfortunately, I did not observe these numbers prior to updating to 10.5.2. But I have observed, that quitting these applications seems to restore system performance to an acceptable level.

I think it may have something to do with Photoshop's event
handling. That is, it is polling for input even though you
have no file open. I'll maybe take a look at this later if
    I have time.

  • Is my Mac Mini slow because of Leopard...or do I need more memory?

I've had my Mac Mini for 18 months and am a happy convert to Apple, although I still use Windows at work. I recently installed Leopard on my Mac Mini and it seems to run a bit slower, especially when I have a lot open. It has a 1.66 GHz, Intel Core Duo processor, 2 cores, 2MB L2 Cache, 512 MB memory, 667 MHz Bus Speed, etc...not sure what it all means, but that's what I have.
Should I be considering upgrading anything, or checking on anything to speed it up?

Honestly, I'm surprised a 512GB Mini will even run.....
Which just goes to show how easily it has become common currency that Leopard won't run in less than 1Gb, when it fact it's perfectly happy in 512Mb RAM - as long as the user isn't running PPC software, or multiple applications, or expecting fast performance.
And honestly, while maxing out the mini to it's 3Gb limit is going to give best possible performance, it is hardly necessary for a satisfactory user experience. It depends a great deal on what the user needs, and for many that means the the 1Gb base is plenty sufficient. More is better, but not always necessary.

  • Mac Mini Slow Boot. Leopard

I have a Mac Mini 5 months old running Leopard as delivered.
Recently has started taking 5 minutes to boot.
I see no obvious troubleshooting tools I would expect with a Windows PC to assist.
    What are the likley causes?
What tools can I use to debug problems?
I have installed all up to date software, but not any firmware updates if indeed such things are available.
MAc is new to me so apologies if this is obvious!!

If it is primarily slow in the blue screen part of the startup process, then the system has already located the boot disk. The boot disk is simply the drive with macOS installed on it that the system uses to start up on, and is of course normally the internal hard drive.
You will have received a DVD with the mini that has a version of MacOS on it that can boot the system, primarily for use if and when you need to reinstall MacOS because the installer is also on that same disk. Also on this DVD, there are a few basic and simple utilities for checking and testing the system, but these are rarely, if ever, needed.
First thing to do is open System Preferences - it's the square icon with the cog-wheel design near the right-hand end of the dock. You'll see a number of preference 'panes' in there (the equivalent of Windows control panels) which allow you to set a range of appearance and behavioural defaults in the system. Most are pretty self explanatory of course. Open the Startup Disk pane, and after a second or two once the panel shows the available startup volumes, you should see your internal drive listed, and probably also 'network startup'. Select your internal drive and click the restart button. This is just to make sure that you have your internal drive set as the startup so MacOS doesn't need to go searching for it.
Once the system restarts after that, and assuming the restart is still pretty slow, open Disk Utility (open your hard drive, then the Applications folder, then the Utilities folder - it's in there) and select your internal hard drive on the left. Then click 'Verify Disk' to check the drive if functionally OK. If it completes verification with no errors, next click 'Repair Disk Permissions'. This will ensure that the drive is healthy and all the user and system rights are correct. Errors with these can cause boot problems (and a great deal of other issues too).
If that doesn't resolve the problem, disconnect the USB hub (and all the devices connected to it) and reboot the system to check it isn't a USB issue. USB can cause lots of issues on both Mac and Windows systems, so it's always a good thing to troubleshoot with the minimum of devices connected.

  • Slow GUI after Leopard installation

    Hi!
I have a 17-inch Macbook Pro with 2,4ghz CPU, 2GB ram and hi-res monitor. Everything was very quick and reponsive in Tiger, but after doing an archive & install of Leopard (with settings kept) the GUI is very slow. Dashboard, the dock, minimizing windows (genie effect) is very sluggish (looks like it is not 3d accelerated) although the computer is not working with anything (according to Activity monitor/top). I have no third party software running and I tried doing a fresh install with the problem still there. Exposé seems to be running like it should do, but Dashboard, Dock and minimizing things are affected. It is very obvious while holding down shift key at the same time as minimizing a window with genie effect - it is anything but smooth! Looks much better on a PowerBook G4 667mhz with Tiger.
I also get less FPS in games like Quake III or Urban Terror. On Tiger it was around 90 FPS all the time, now it is around 50.
Are there updated graphics drivers on the way or any other solution to the problem?
    Thanks
    Jacob

Try putting these numbers in Network>TCP/IP>DNS Servers, for the Interface you connect with...
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
    Then Apply. For 10.5/10.6 Network, highlight Interface>Advanced button>DNS tab>little + icon.
DNS Servers are a bit like Phone books where you look up a name and it gives you the phone number, in our case, you put in apple.com and it comes back with 17.149.160.49 behind the scenes.
These Servers have been patched to guard against DNS poisoning, and are faster/more reliable than most ISP's DNS Servers.

  • Printing slow after Snow Leopard Upgrade

Hi! Newbie here! I recently upgraded my 2007 iMac to Snow Leopard and as a result my Canon BJC-2100 printer has slowed to a crawl. It seems the software adjusted the print quality to the sharpest setting but this also slowed the process way down. I don't see anything to help me adjust the print quality or otherwise change the printing speed.
I would love to hear from forum members as to how to speed the printing back up a bit. Am I doomed to have to buy another printer?
    Thank you!

Thanks. Yes I went to Canon's web site and plugged in Snow Leopard for my printer. I received the following message:
"There is no driver for the OS version you selected. The driver may be included in your OS or you may not need a driver."
Too bad there doesn't seem a way for me to change the printer's settings back to the way it was.

  • Network connection extremely slow after snow leopard upgrade

I should first state that my son's new Intel Mac Mini (2009 model) is working fine without any issues - it is on the "n" band. My wife's macbook (on Leopard) and my Thinkpad are continuing to work fine - both connecting to the "g" band of my Simultaneous Dual band AEBS.
On my 2008 model mac mini, the installation went thru fine, but the network connection is extremely slow - it is connecting using the "g" band. Even when I launch the Airport utility, it takes a while to locate the AEBS and then when I click on "Manual Setup", it takes a very very long time to read the configuration. This tells me that the airport interface on the mac mini has some driver issue.
I tried all the suggestions given in other threads (listed below), but none of them worked.
    1. Created a new network location and rebooted
    2. Trashed the com.apple.airport.airportutility.plist and rebooted
    3. Rebooted countless number of times - illogical, but that kicks in when I can't find a solution.
It is past midnight here (20miles from Apple headquarter). Going to wait for another 30minutes. After that, I will use SuperDuper to install my Leopard back on my mac mini which I had cloned before starting the installation.
Appreciate any suggestions - I am open to any prayer solution as well! If not, the Snow Leopard family pack is going back to the Apple store on Monday.
Just saw at engadget: "On a 17-inch unibody we were putting through the paces, the WiFi inexplicably has gone out and we have yet to get it working again."

Some more info about my setup:
    *Simultaneous Dual band AEBS:*
    Radio Mode: 802.11n only (5 GHz) - 802.11b/g
    Radio Channel Selection: Manual - 161 (5GHz), 6(2.4GHz)
    *Airport Express:*
Wireless mode: Extend a wireless network
Allow wireless clients checked under the name of the network (same as for AEBS).
Both are WPA/WPA2 Personal security. And both the routers were upgraded to 7.4.2 firmware this morning with the hope that it will help.
    *N Devices (both working fine):*
    Apple TV 40GB
2009 Model Mac Mini upgraded to Snow Leopard - working perfectly.
    *G Devices:*
    Thinkpad running WinXP
    Dell Laptop running WinXP
    Acer Netbook running WinXP
    iPod Touch
    iPhone 3G
    Linksys webcam
_All of the above are working fine_.
+2008 model Mac mini -+ upgrade to Snow Leopard shows extremely slow wifi connection that it is unusable. It takes 20min to load apple homepage. When I boot from the clone of my Leopard lying on my external drive, it works perfectly.
I compared the settings between all the tabs of Network-->Airport-->Advanced and they are identical between Snow Leopard and Leopard mode except that SL doesn't have the "Apple Talk" tab.
Appreciate any help to debug this.

  • Slow Internet in Leopard 10.5.7

I just updated my 1.83 ghz macbook pro to the latest version of leopard. After which my internet is noticeably slower than it was under 10.4, to the point where it makes loading videos on hulu or youtube impossible and doing any sort of web browsing difficult. Google has many different causes. Any idea what I may be looking at?

    Justin Moreau wrote:
It was an install to a brand new hard drive. The router has the latest firmware.
But how old is the router? And not all routers work well with Leopard. Only those with the latest security features.
After trying to go thru the other suggestions, most of that sounds way over my head. Its really quite frustrating. What changed in airport from 10.4 to 10.5 that caused this?
Security. When Leopard came out many of us had to update router firmware or replace the router.
The usual complaint was, "It worked with Tiger and my XP but not with Leopard."
Right now this MBP connects at 20 Mb/s same as Tiger and same as my PCs.
I use two modems, a Verizon MI424WR Rev. E and a LinkSys WRT54GX2, all with the very latest firmware. No problems with either. No connection speed problems, no dropout problems.
It's not Leopard, it's usually router incompatibility.
    You can also visit
    http://www.speedtest.net/
and see your actual speeds, separate from the initial delay or latency.
DNS is usually the culprit when latency is an issue, but never when the basic speed is the problem

  • Aperture is very slow with Snow Leopard

    Hello,
I updated my MyBook with Snow Leopard. The (big) problem is that Aperture 2.1.4 is now very slow when I make change to images. CPU usage is very high and Aperture is unusable.
    What can I do?
    Thanks in advance.

zemitch - I also use one of the slowest machines capable of running SL, but my your graphics card may be different than mine. But I also store my masters on an external drive and that wasn't the issue.
I found rebuilding the database of Aperture when starting up helps a bit, but the biggest improvement is to do cropping/straightening AFTER the other adjustments. That changes my workflow, but with no crop/straighten, the other adjustments didn't not show the horrible slowdown.
    See if that helps you.

  • Intel Mac Slowing Down Post Leopard Install!

Please help! Recently I installed Leopard in my new iMac 20 inch 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 1 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM. As of late, I have noticed significant slow down in my computer's performance. I'm starting to see a lot the rainbow swirls and I can't do anything for about 5 minutes at a time during normal use. Anyone also affected?

My Power settings have the HD spinning down every 10 mins after inactivity, but it speeds up in an instant. You don't even notice it. I doubt your slow downs are due to this. I did an Erase and Install when I installed Leopard and it has been completely smooth and very fast. You should do an erase and reinstall with no extra apps or peripherals. If it is slow then, just using bundled apple software, then it is fair to say you have a problem of some sort and should call apple. Make sure you do an erase and reinstall and repair permissions and reset PRAM and the system before you call apple, because you'll wait on the phone an hour just to be told to do those things before they'll speak to you about other possible solutions!

  • Battlefield 2142 plaing SLOW after latest Leopard graphics update

I love using my MacBook Pro to play Battlefield 2142... but ever since I updated the software (which included a Leopard graphics update) the graphics are choppy, the play is stalling and generally slow.
What gives? It was working great before the update!?

I had the same problem with 5.3 and went back to 5.2 in order to play vid games. I saw 5.4 and thought befor I tried it Id call apple tech support to see what the deal is. I didnt get a straight answer. I am going to wait on the game manufactures to see if an update is planned. other wise I may have to get a microsoft dedicated machine for all my vid games. and it doesnt make sence to have to purchase 2 laptops.

  • My fix for slow boot after Leopard Upgrade

I was having the same issue as a lot of others in posts about extremely slow boot up times after upgrading from Tiger to Leopard. I spent a lot of time on the phone with Apple Support but in the end I stumbled across a fix for my situation.
After power up and getting to the login screen (about 5-6 seconds), it would take about 3 minutes to fully populate the desktop after entering my password. Most of that time just sitting at the login screen. Extremely painful.
My MacBook connects to a Windows Active Directory network. I was able to fix my slowness by disabling the Active Directory service. I was concerned at first but my bound volumes still work. I don't use a lot of AD services from my Mac so I at this point I have not found any issue with this fix.
To disable, go to Directory Utility, select services and if you have Active Directory enabled, disable it.
My boot time increased from 3 minutes to less than 15 seconds. Better than Tiger.
Tech Support is aware of this issue and has reported it the OS team for a fix.

    Hi-
Do you have a Tiger volume to test your machine with?
Do you still have video in Tiger?
If you don't have a Tiger volume to test on, I would consider such as an important troubleshooting step
So now I am wondering if it is the PCI slot that suddenly stopped working after the OS upgrade. Does anyone know if this is a documented issue and if there is a fix for it?
There are no issues with the AGP slot in relation to an OS version.

  • Airport slowness with snow leopard

Anyone else noticing this? I've got my airport station in the other room with an airport express in the same room as the computer to extend the range. With just leopard, all the pages were coming up quickly, even java chat rooms were coming up very fast... no problems. Then I installed snow leopard and it just seem's more sluggish to load some pages. Like the apple main page that now takes longer to load. Some pages still load fast but I can tell a difference between leopard and snow L. via wifi... anyone else having this problem? Is there a way to the pages loading faster?

HI John and Welcome to Apple Discussions...
Then I installed snow leopard and it just seem's more sluggish to load some pages. Like the apple main page that now takes longer to load
May not be your wi fi causing the problem. If you are using Safari to browser the internet, try the following.
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Empty Cache. When you are done with that...
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 5 buttons and click Reset.
Go here for trouble shooting 3rd party plugins or input managers which might be causing the problem.
Safari: Add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues
Since you are running Snow Leopard, make sure Safari is opening in 32-bit mode, not 64. Right or control click the Safari icon in the Applications folder, then click: Get Info In the Get Info window click the black disclosure triangle next to General so it faces down. Select 32 bit mode. Also, (in that same window) make sure Safari is NOT running in Rosetta.

Web pages now include a small icon or 'favicon' which is visible in the address bar and next to bookmarks. These icons take up disk space and slow Safari down. It is possible to erase the icons from your computer and start fresh. *To delete Safari's icon cache using the Finder, open your user folder, navigate to ~/Library/Safari/ and move this file "webpageIcons.db to the Trash.*
If Safari is sitll slow, go to the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari/Preferences. Make note of all the preferences under each tab. Quit Safari. Now go to ~/Library/Preferences and move this file com.apple.safari.plist to the Desktop. Relaunch Safari. If it's a successful launch, then that .plist file needs to be moved to the Trash.
Another thing to try is changing your Airport Channel.
Open AirPort Utility, located in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder on a computer using Mac OS X.
Select the device you’re setting up, and then click Manual Setup. Enter the base station password if necessary
Click AirPort in the toolbar, and then click Wireless.
Choose a new channel from the Channel pop-up menu.
    Click: Update
    Quit Airport Utility
    Carolyn
