Slow i7 MacBook Pro startup and battery life issues

Hi Everyone,
My i7 2.66GHz 15" MacBook Pro with 8GB of RAM does a couple of things that worry me
1. The battery life is poor, 127 Charge Cycles, 6 months old. I'm sat on Chrome with one window open and it's reading 3hr 16 min on 83%
2. The startup into 10.6.5 is painfully slow. It seems to load up the menu bar at the top and hang mid flow, just before the battery status and time remaining appear.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance! Mike
Here is a copy of my startup log:

There seems to be a lot of unanswered questions floating around here.
Its kind of scary seeing some of these "issues" and not seeing any answers.
I just spent 3 g's on a 2011 mbp, and I am really hoping all the great things that I've learned about Apple still rein true. Those are the only reasons I bought one.
My startup is very slow as well.

  • Macbook Pro has short battery life and runs hotter after firmware update

I installed the macbook pro EFI firmware update yesterday and now my MBP runs hotter and the fan starts running earlier than it has ever done before. Also, my battery lasts 51 minutes from a full charge whereas, before the update, it lasted 2 hours (using the same programs and display settings).
Has anybody else seen this problem?
Please tell me I'm not alone with seeing this. I am hoping that there is a solution and it's better than 'buy a new battery'. The fact that my box now runs hotter with the fan on more constantly would not be solved by a new battery I think.

Also had the problem of MBP running much hotter after most recent Firmware update.
My fans have been running at 6k RPM constantly, and processor Temps have been running at 70-88°.
Following the advice in this topic, I checked the Activity Monitor, which told me both my account and my son's account (which was running but had no actual applications running) had separate Airport processes going nuts – each at approx 80-95%!
Switching off airport and logging out of my son's account almost immediately started to cool the processors, and the fans began to slow down. Switching Airport back on doesn't seem to heat things up again, but if I start to crunch numbers, it all happens over again...
So who knows why the firmware update is making these processes freak out.... weird.

  • Macbook pro (13-inch) battery life?

    Hello,
I've bought a Macbook Pro (13-inch, mid 2012, non-retina, OSX Yosemite 10.10, i7 processor) 3 weeks ago and I was wondering how long the battery usually lasts and what I can do to increase battery life.
Currently it only lasts up to 5 hours, despite it promising 9 hours of battery life. This is mostly while using Google Chrome and iTunes. It feels like I'm recharging it constantly and it already has been through 23 battery cycles - at this rate my battery would only last 3 years which would be shorter than my previous laptop did and I expect more from something that cost twice as much as my previous one.
So am I doing something wrong? Is there something broken or is max 5 hours of battery life normal?
With my previous laptop I also used to take out the battery and use only the adaptor to save my battery, but as I can't remove the battery of this laptop I was wondering if leaving the adaptor in while working at home so it remains at 100% would be a good idea or would that actually be worse?
    Many thanks in advance!
    Shari D
MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.1)

The battery life is stated as "up to" 9 hours, not promising 9 hours. Having said that, I would suggest using a browser other than Chrome, as it is often considered a battery hog. Also note, it is perfectly fine to use the computer with the AC power connected. As a rule of thumb, use it AC power when available, and on battery power when portability is required.

  • MacBook Pro Snow Leopard battery life

Okay, I've been poring through the threads for days now to try to find a solution to this . . .
I have two different MacBook Pros (a 15" 4,1 and and a 17" 1,2). I've upgraded both to Snow Leopard. Each is now running 10.6.6.
After uprading, both started suffering extremely poor battery life, losing nearly 1% each minute, even when the Mac is sitting and doing nothing.
I've done all the fixes I've found (recalibrating the battery, resetting PRAM, checking for rogue processes, etc.), and so far nothing has fixed the problem. I even bought a new battery for the older Mac, and that had absolutely no effect.
Some of the threads I've seen here go back for more than two years.
Has anyone solved this problem? I'm at the end of my rope!

    1% a minute?
You're quite right - this problem has existed for years. Apple bases its power estimates on a device half intensity, using Energy Saver, and SL is supposed to have better battery performance than Lion.
Something is causing your battery to die on you. Check off the following one by one to make sure there isn't another problem:
    1. Are you attached by USB? If you leave your MBP attached to a USB device or Firewire cable, you can lose battery power even if your computer sleeps. Disconnect all devices when you're not using them.
    2. Are you using Energy Saver? Your machine may be sapping energy by being at high intensity. Instead, opt for a monitor at half or three-quarters brightness.
    3. Losing battery even while sleeping? That problem can be addressed by going to System Preferences/Bluetooth and disabling Bluetooth.
    4. Are you losing battery through heat? You can lose battery capacity with a system that's hot all the time. Keep your machines as cool as possible, through energy management, getting a laptop cooler, or using free applications like Fan Control.
    5. Limit your losses. Use a power cord whenever convenient to increase your real-life battery time.
    6. Some applications, like Skype that are on all day, sap battery power. If one such application is on all day (or close to it), this may be part of the issue.
    7. Don't upgrade to Lion. This OS demands twice as much power as SL.
I don't want to minimize the significance of the issue, but take a look at which processes are drawing power. You might want to go to Utilities/Activity Monitor at take a look at which applications are consuming your CPU.

  • Macbook Pro Retina 13" Battery Life - Need Advice

Hi. I bought my first ever Macbook Pro Retina 13" a few days ago. I am mainly going to be using it for college work, listening to music and watching youtube videos in my spare time. And browsing the net of course.
I was wondering what is the BEST way to charge my laptop in order for me being able to use it for a long time when its not plugged in? Do I let the battery go all the way to 1%? I did that the first two times and I am worried because I've heard its bad. Or do I let the battery drop to about 20% EVERY TIME and then charge it? Or do I charge it whenever I need to and only let the battery drop to about 20% a few times a month? I am really confused. Ive been on many different forums etc and everyone is saying something different. As I said, this is my first macbook and I don't want to ruin the battery life.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
(Sorry if I've put this post in the wrong community.)

  • Macbook Pro (2012 April) Battery Life Reduced A Lot!

Hi guys I got a macbook pro sometime around April 2012 and the battery life just went down drastically in  a couple of months i have no clue why before it used to show upto 7 hours something initially but then it started showing only 4 hours or so i feel something went totally wrong with the battery is there any way to fix it please give me some helpful suggestions thanks! By the way i must mention this today i was watching the percentage meter it makes absolutely no sense first it showed 7:08 today on 98 percent then within few minutes it went to 6:28 in 97 percent so i think somethins is very strange with the battery. Just yestarday on 99 percent it was showing 4:38 hours please help me fix it.

As others have said the battery itself is perfectly OK.
The reason your remaining charge shows only 4:38 after it has been fully charged may be explained by one or more processes that are responsible for excessive power demands. To isolate that potential cause read: Runaway applications can shorten battery runtime, affect performance, and increase heat and fan activity
Because i have turned of put harddisk to sleep as someone on forums suggested to another user that turning that off can help stop freezing problems when opening lid
Whatever you did may have exacerbated this problem or created others. More information would be helpful. Can you provide more detail?

  • MacBook Pro - late 2013 Battery Life declining

I have noticed in the last couple of weeks that my Battery life is not what it used to be. Until recently, I would be able to charge overnight, and then take to work with me and have on most of the day without being plugged into the mains and still have 30 or 40% battery left when I get home. Now it seems to decrease quite rapidly and even more so once it gets past having 40% left.
I also noticed last night that when using Chromecast to stream to my TV, it really eats up the battery.
I have a 15" MacBook Pro, SSd pro-retina - I have not yet upgraded from Mavericks to Yosemite as I read so many people having issues with Yosemite.

    1. Check the cycle count of the battery against the rated life for your model. The battery may be due for replacement. If the power adapter is connected almost all the time, the battery may need replacing even though the cycle count is not too high.
    2. Follow these instructions, or these for OS X 10.8 or earlier.
    3. In the Energy Saver preference pane, uncheck the box marked
Enable Power Nap while on battery power
if it's shown (it may not be.)
    4. You can also try resetting the SMC.
    5. Make sure your system is up to date in Software Update.
    6. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service center.

  • Macbook Pro (Non-Retina) Battery Life

Just recently purchased a non-retina MacBook Pro, 13" with the upgraded i7 processor.  So far, it's lots of fun, just one small question/concern...
Does the battery life really suck on this one, or is it just mine that possibly needs service?
The estimated remaining battery time keeps fluctuating, which is understandable, which attempting to constantly calculate; however, I score perhaps three hours of life using only web (Safari) and iTunes (transferring songs to/from iPhone, etc.)  I haven't even installed my Adobe CS collection yet, and I'm afraid it'll constantly be glued to the wall adaptor, thus defeating the purpose of an expensive, beautiful laptop.
Anyone believe this to be common, uncommon, or bizarre perhaps?  I've got AppleCare, of course, so worst case scenario, I create a TM backup and send in for inspection/repair

There is an authorized Apple store not far from me, but I've only seen one technician there ever, and they'd most likely send it out for service or something anyways.
Any web browser I have attempted to use (Safari, Firefox, and especially Chrome,) is listed under "Apps Using Significant Energy.." though Firefox and Safari have only stated that when more than one tab is open, doing searches.  Chrome states that upon opening the app- weird.
There is no constant video streaming, only videos on occasion, likely via YouTube; all that's one with iTunes is syncing with the external hard drive that houses the files, backups, and playing music- no iTunes Radio, Podcasts, or of the sort.  Also, iTunes (almost) never shows in the Significant Energy column- only seen it there maybe once.
When using the computer, I see the calculated battery life jump from seven, to five, to three something... which reminds me more of my ancient PowerBook. haha.  There has been nothing done so far other than small, meddling tasks- non-significant sized file downloading, occasional video, and the bulk of it just retooling the iTunes library- still restoring it from scratch
I just want to be certain that there's no significant energy usage hidden here.  This machine has the 2.9ghz i7, with maxed 16gb RAM- would that differ anything from the original spec models that people test and claim to have some solid battery life? (I don't mean the new Retina or Air models)  It seems fine when I unplug it from the wall, but drains quicker than expected.  Once I start drawing and editing, I'd like for this machine to last more than an hour

  • MacBook Pro Startup and Display Issues

I've been having some random problems with my MacBook Pro (2.16 GHz, 2 GB RAM, 100 GB 7200 rpm hard drive, ATI Radeon X1600 graphics). Specifically:
    1. Lines across the screen and purple boxes sometimes appear.
    2. The graphic effects (e.g. zooming a window) sometimes get "frozen" on the screen. In other words a remnant from the animation will stay until the window is refreshed.
    3. The Mac sometimes freezes during the startup process. Sometimes the login screen will be unresponsive and other times the Mac will almost bootup but fail when loading startup items.
    4. Less frequently the Mac will freeze randomly. I previously had iStat Menus installed and each time the MacBook Pro froze up it indicated both read and write disk activities.
Yesterday I decided to wipe the machine clean and start from scratch in case there were a software issue or corruption on the hard drive that was causing my woes. I completely erased my hard drive and even zeroed the entire disk to make sure everything was completely wiped out. I also disconnected all peripherals to simplify things as much as possible.
The first time I tried the reinstall everything completed successfully but the "Welcome" movie froze part way through. I then had problems running the install again. I was able to boot off the Leopard DVD, but the machine froze a couple of clicks into the install procedure. After numerous tries I was able to erase the hard drive once again and install Leopard. This completed successfully and I installed all updates.
The problems started to show up again almost immediately, however. I installed iLife and iWork and all the updates and had the computer freeze up on me again during a reboot. I also noticed that the display issues started to show up again even before installing any third-party software.
I've tried running disk tests with Drive Genius 2.1, but no errors have been reported. I've also used the freeware Rember program to run memory tests but have yet to see any errors. Sometimes my Mac powers up without any problems and once it's powered up it often stays running for days. The display issues appear quite frequently. I've using iStat Menus to keep an eye on the temperature sensors and everything appears to be normal - so it doesn't appear to be temperature related.
Fortunately the computer's still covered under the extended AppleCare warranty, but I would like to have some idea what's going on before I take it in just in case they're not able to reproduce the issues.
Any suggestions and insights would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks in advance for reading my rather long-winded message.
    Cheers,
    Tim

I took my MacBook Pro in for repair and it turned out to be an issue with the logic board. I had the logic board replaced (fortunately it was covered under my extended AppleCare warranty) and these problems are a thing of the past.

  • Using magic trackpad affect macbook pro retina's battery life?

Hi, I just got new macbook pro 15 with retina. I was not sure how much it affects on macbook's battery while using the Magic Trackpad or Magic mouse. If it affects indeed then how much...thanks...

You are using Bluetooth if you have got a Magic Trackpad, so it affects the battery. However, it's not a big difference respecting to using the built-in trackpad or a USB mouse, so I wouldn't worry

  • Macbook Air mid-2012 battery life issues -- a possible culprit ?

    Hi all,
I've posted and followed a thread regarding diminished battery life for the mid-2012 MBA, when Mountain Lion was released. I never could fix the problem, was contacted by Apple but that didn't solve anything either.
The troubles I was (and still am) having with my MBA were :
Battery life reduced by at least 33% when I upgraded to Mountain Lion from Lion, following a firmware update.
No change when I clean installed ML.
No change when I upgraded, and then clean installed Mavericks.
My battery, after 13 months of use, had its capacity reduced to 70-80%, and has now been stable for one year at 70-80% capacity. It now lasts approximately 3 to 4 hours, and has never lasted longer than 5 hours since I upgraded to ML, which was a few weeks after the laptop was purchased...
I've tried everything that was posted on the forums, SMC resets, etc. Now to the (maybe) interesting stuff.
I stumbled today on something interesting. I was researching my issue to see if people with the same laptop, that followed the same firmware upgrade path than I did had similar issues. Long story short, a forum post led me to something interesting, located at /System/Library/Extensions/IOPlatformPluginFamily.kext/Contents/Plugins/ACPI_SM C_PlatformPlugin.kext/Contents/Resources
DISCLAIMER Whatever you do, do not try to remove / move anything in this folder.
What is interesting is that my Macbook Air has the following identifier : MacBookAir5,2. However, in the above-mentioned folder, there is no MacBookAir5_2.plist, it stops at 4_2.plist and then goes on to MBP models. Now, the question that I have is could the fact that this plist is missing be related to my battery issues ? In the sense that without this file, the kernel does not know how to properly manage the power, read the battery status / thermal sensors ?
I would really love to fix this 2-year old issue that has been plaguing my laptop ever since I purchased it.
    Cheers,
    Hadrien

Edited to add a screenshot of the plists directory.

I leave my LithiumIon battery plugged in when near an outlet.  But I use it on battery down to 40% at least once a month.
Using Coconut battery (download from macupdate.com) you see my battery is just fine after 18 months:

  • MacBook Pro Keyboard and tracking pad issues

I bought a refurbed macbook pro from Apple about 10 months ago. I've loved everything about it . . . until now. Yesterday I turned it on and started having keyboard issues. First the y key wouldn't work, then the rest of the keys followed. At that point, it was still starting up normally, but then the tracking pad would only "right click" on items on my desk top, so I couldn't open applications.
Now it will only open up in safe mode and it makes a noise like I'm pressing all the keys at once at start-up. Nothing happened to it between Saturday night when it was working perfectly and Sunday morning so I'm mystified. I brought it to the genius bar this morning and they also couldn't see what was wrong. Genius said something about how some keys looked "stuck" but mentioned it didn't looked like anything was spilled on it or anything.
The only "weird" thing about it is that the hing between the screen and the keyboard has always been a little loose but I didn't know until my husband bought a new pro a few months later and I felt the difference. The genius didn't seem to think that would mean anything.
They told me it would be at least $280 to send it out, diagnose, and fix it. Considering it's less than a year old, I'm a little reluctant (and poor) to do that right way especially since he had no clue what the problem might be.
I'm planning on trying another Genius Bar to see if they might have a better idea (hey, it worked with my ipod once) but I've been combing the message boards to see if anyone has had a similar issue. I found an older thread that talked about 2008 pros haven't issues with the keyboard and trackpad freezing due to a "faulty pressure connector" so I might try that solution when I get home. But any other ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
If you bought your Mac from Apple 10 months ago, it should still be covered by the 1 year warranty and as long as the problem was not caused by accidental damage of some sort, it should be repaired at no cost to you. Was the store aware that you were still under warranty?
You can even upgrade to 3 year Applecare if you do so before the first year of ownership is up--definitely something to do if your Mac is having troubles already.
When you see the next genius, make sure they know you are still in the 1 year warranty period, and if you can, upgrade to 3 year Applecare.
You can also call Applecare on the phone and tell them about these problems and ask them for a case number, which will at least establish that they started while you were still under warranty. If a problem first occurs under warranty, Apple will honor the warranty until the problem is fixed, even if the warranty runs out in the meantime.
    Good luck!

  • Gingerbread OTA and battery life issue

I received the Gingerbread OTA update. I am still working through testing everything to see if the phone is now the way it should be, but I keep stumbling on 1 issue with the battery life.
Yes my battery is now over a year old of occasional use.
When I first got the gingerbread update I had 100% battery and applied the update.
That day I got over 9 hours straight of MP3 playback over Bluetooth using the stock music player.
I charged the battery to full that night and left it on the charger overnight.
The next day I got 4 hours straight of MP3 playback over Bluetooth using the stock music player.
I charged it up 100% at work and proceeded to get another 4 hours straight.
Since that day I have never seen the 8 hours again.
One interesting note is that in the 4 hour increments the music player will stop when the battery hits the orange low warning. I can switch over to streaming music videos and play for another hour till the battery fully dies.
I have tried to recondition the battery using some information I found.
I have factory reset the phone and updated stock apps only.
I have factory reset the phone and never logged into the market place to keep apps from auto updating.
I have noticed on my factory resets things are different. It wants to erase the SD card. You can do the factory reset without erasing the SD card. I am not sure exactly what the difference is there and why the default is to erase the SD card. Sadly both factory reset are not behaving as the previous one did. Normally after the factory reset the setup wizard would start and help you activate your phone. It seems the new default is to not run that process or I got a bad update on my phone.
I have also noticed as a user here suggested that after the phone reaches 100% charge, even though it is plugged in, the phone seems to switch over to using battery mode draining the battery and never topping it back up since it still plugged in.
Shouldn't a year old battery last longer? Shouldn't I be able to stream music for longer than 9 hours? I don't have the screen on, all interaction is through the Bluetooth headset, doesn't mater if email is on with push mode or totally off and not even activated, no calling, no text messages, and just solely trying to listen music like a mp3 player.
    Suggestions?
Is your Samsung Fascinate Gingerbread OTA doing the same things?

A master reset definetly did not solve the issue for me.
On my last and most recent reset I noticed it did execute the setup wizard like it had done prior to gingerbread. This time I did not configure anything on the phone and just left it sit. I never opened the market either. About an hour later i got tired of no phone and started the wizard on my own so that the phone was at least activated. I did not configure any additinal email accounts just the standard single google account for my phone withthe gmail program.
I charge the battery to 100% with the phone on
Unplug the ac charger from the phone
ask the phone to power down
wait another 2 minutes after the screen goes black and the buttons are no longer lit
plug in the ac charger and it will top up the battery to a full 100% and not the OS 100% that it thinks it should be
Most nights i just leave it off charging to that last 100% since i have seen problems with trickle charging after it reaches 100% int he OS and then starts using the battery the rest of the night!
Next morning unplug the AC charger and ask the phone to boot
I got 8-9 hours playing mp3s streamed over bluetooth, 1 text message in and 1 text message out, but no phone calls and no other activity on the phone. Not bad but i feel it should do better!
I actived 3 exchange email accounts in push mode. I had heard push mode was supposed to be the best battery saver. Well with the included email (not gmail) app my battery went down in less than 4 hours! Today i have forced the email to manual mode instead of push for peak and off peak times. I will see if i get 8-9 hours again.
The rest of the phone is all factory defaults, boring, and pretty much useless. So much for a smart phone being smart and handy. Guess i need to buy about 3 batteries to get through a day and find a way to charge them as i run around throughout the day without ac or a way to charge.

  • Old 2005 Video iPod - How do I take music off and add to my iTunes music library?  And battery life issues...

I bought my husband a Video iPod clear back in 2005.  I bought the 30GB serial No 4V544C1WTXK Model number A1136.  Yes, very, very old.  However, it is an Apple product and therefore should be good forever right?    We actually rarely used it then and have not used it in years.  I got it out and brushed it off the other day.  I have two questions:
1-  I have some great music on it that I would like to transfer into my iTunes music library.  Is there a way to move it from the iPod into my iTunes library?
2-  It isn't really holding a battery charge even when it's been charging for hours.  Is there anything I can do about that?  Do I need to replace the battery?  Is there even a way to replace the battery?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you in advance.

1-  I have some great music on it that I would like to transfer into my iTunes music library.  Is there a way to move it from the iPod into my iTunes library?
See this older post from another forum member Zevoneer covering the different methods and software available to assist you with the task of copying content from your iPod back to your PC and into iTunes.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2452022?start=0&tstart=0
2-  It isn't really holding a battery charge even when it's been charging for hours.  Is there anything I can do about that?  Do I need to replace the battery?
Given the age of the device and that fact that it wasn't used for a lengthy period of time, it's likely that the iPod's battery is shot and in need of replacement.  Lithium-ion batteries need constant activity in order to maintain any sort of charge.  However, all batteries generally deteriote over time and lose their ability to charge.
Is there even a way to replace the battery?
Yes.  You can choose to have Apple swap the battery for a new one for the price indicated on this page.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/service/prices/
You could also choose to send it to a third party service instead to have them swap it out at a much lower cost.  A Google search for "iPod battery replacement" should give you a number of results to work with.
