Slow iMac Due To activitymonitord eating %cpu

Hello to all,
My iMac (Intel, OSX 10.7.5) got molasses slow (dropdown menus taking 30 seconds to drop down, etc.).
Nothing to do with internet, upload, download; all "internal" Mac stuff.
This did not occur gradually over time, but abruptly all of a sudden last night - BAM, s-l-o-w
Consulting the Activity Monitor it showed that activitymonitord was using 98-ish% of the cpu.
Here's what I have (right or wrong, logical or illogical) done:
1- created a new User Account
2- restarted computer and logged on under the new account
3- checked the % cpu usage of activitymonitord, and it was 0.7%
4- concluded that the culprit was something corrupted in the old User Account
5- used Migration Manager to migrate all my "stuff" from old User Account to newly created User Account
6- Migration Manager worked flawlessly, all my stuff was there, looked identical, etc. yippee
7- double checked Activity Monitor and activitymonitord was still at 0.7%
8- took a deep breath and went to eat supper and watch a little TV
9- came back up to computer after a time of about 3 hours, checked Activity Monitor, and activitymonitord was at 8.5%
10- spent 2 hours at computer with Activity Monitor open and just watched the % cpu of activitymonitord gradually rise to
     9%, then 10%, then 11%, 12%, 13%, 14, 15... now sitting at 17%
very steadily, seemingly just as a ƒ of time, irrespective of what I did or didn't do
My assumption is that activitymonitord will continue to rise under this new User Account just like it did under the old one, and eventually choke my computer to a standstill.
HELP ! ? ! ? !
James

That process only runs when the Activity Monitor application is launched.
Back up all data immediately as your boot drive may be failing.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator. I've tested them only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, they may not work as described.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'Channel t|GPU D|I/O|n Cause: -' | tail | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Normally the command will produce no output, and the window will be empty. If the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window) has anything in it, post it — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the TextEdit window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.

  • Slow iMacs

I have 2 iMacs in the office running Adobe CS2 and Microsoft Office Standard
Basic config as follows. However they seem to really struggle running the programs and my guys are getting really frustrated.....The programs hnag for ages during the simplest of tasks and will close InDesign down for no reason. Is there anything i can do to speed them up or is it that i need to go back to the supplier and look for something more powerful? Would more RAM help?
    Machine Name: iMac
    Machine Model: iMac4,1
    CPU Type: Intel Core Duo
    Number Of Cores: 2
    CPU Speed: 2 GHz
    L2 Cache (shared): 2 MB
    Memory: 512 MB
    Bus Speed: 667 MHz

That's because Adobe Creative Suite 2 and Microsoft Office are not yet Universal Binaries, that is they were developed to run on the older PowerPC processors(G3,G4 and G5)and when run on the newer Core Duo/Core 2 Duo they have to be translated so that it can run on x86 architecture.
I can see that you have just 512 MB RAM. Adding more RAM definitely helps for Office, however CS2 will be slow. Adobe will release a Universal Binary next year.

  • Swing application eats CPU on resume after standby

My application contains a mix of regular Swing components and about 200 (small) custom components (JPanels) that draw themselves. The problem is that if put my laptop into Standby, then restart it, the application eats CPU. It goes from ~4% pre standby to ~48% after standby. Totally repeatable. There is only the main thread, the AWT thread and a couple timers firing: one to get data from a server and one to redraw the custom controls to make the control blink (calls repaint() to cue up a call to paintComponent()). I put timing code in the two timer driven threads and both are running fine. NOTE: each of the custom components is just a rectangle with a short text string in it. Think checkerboard with text. The background color is all that is being changed. It's basically a grid of alarm/status "lights".
I did some searching and only found a reference to a drawing bug that was fixed back in 1.4.x that had to do with WinXP and dual-headed computers.
Note that another simple Swing application I wrote (no custom controls), doesn't appear to behave this way, so I suspect it has to do with the custom drawing stuff (rolling my own paintComponent() method).
Any thoughts on how to figure out what is eating the CPU? I'm using NetBeans 6.7 and JDK 1.6_14 under Windows XP.

It doesn't matter if it's a Swing timer or a Util timer. It behaves the same either way. That was one of the first things I tried.
I ended up refactoring the code to go from a grid of individual controls (think checker board where each square is a control that draws itself), to a single "board" control that draws a grid. That seems to have fixed the issue. I can go in/out of Standby and the app doesn't eat a ton of CPU any more. The real problem may still be there, just too small of an effect to notice.
I don't know why the original design would work fine before a Standby, but not after. Having ~200 little controls doing repaints twice a second must confuse something in the JVM/Windows versus having 4 large controls doing the same amount of drawing.
It's working, so time to move on.

  • I had to replace my iMac due to hard drive and Logicboard failure, so I want to reinstall Windows 7 on a Boot Camp partition. Will there be a problem reactivating Windows 7 Home Premium?

    Hi,
    should be no problem.
Best case is you can activate online via Internet.
Worst case is you have to call Microsoft and explain that it is the same computer after a mainboard failure.

  • KACPID eating CPU on a 6250 blades with SLES 10 SP1

    Hi all,
We have just installed Sles 10 SP1 with OES2 addon on a 6250 blade and it seems that kacpid process is eating CPU (starts with 25 %) cycles.
This process cannot be killed en wil eat more cycles after time. After 2 days is allocating almost two cores.
The latest bios is installed (V11) en we are running kernel 2.6.16.54-0.2.11.
It might be a acpi problem.
    Any ideas?
    Cheers
    JJ Dullink

Same problem here with SLES 9 SP4.
And by the way, booting with acpi=ht might help, although it disables most of the power saving features.

  • Slow slow slow...even with low CPU and memory usage.

Sometimes my Mac gets really slow, especially with applications, and even more especially when opening applications. What I don't understand is that when I check Activity Monitor during slow times, it shows plenty of CPU and memory still free, far from being maxed out. I try to keep a good chunk of my hard drive available for virtual memory too, so I'm unsure where its getting bogged down.
    Any ideas?

You may just need a little maintenance:
Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.5.1 or higher are Intel Mac compatible; Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided. Versions 1.5.1 or later are Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep. Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts had been significantly reduced in Tiger and Leopard. These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc. Other utilities are also available such as Onyx, Leopard or Snow Leopard Cache Cleaner, CockTail, and Xupport, for example.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack (not compatible with Snow Leopard.) If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline. Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack is not compatible with Snow Leopard.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. Carbon Copy Cloner (Donationware)
    6. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
    7. Intego Personal Backup (Commercial)
    8. Data Backup (Commercial)
    9. SilverKeeper 2.0 (Freeware)
    10. MimMac (Commercial)
    11. Tri-Backup (Commercial)
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.

  • Plugin-container.exe is EATING cpu clock cycles and slowing down my computer big-time. Is there a fix to prevent this, or do I just have to disable this subsidiary program and take the consequences?

Whenever I have an audiovisual display running in a Firefox (5.0) tab, the program "plugin-container.exe" swamps my CPU, jumping up to 95% of processing clock cycles. This makes all online video displays hang and jump, and it's a pain in the neck. Is there any way to mitigate this?

That's supposed to indicate it's your plug-ins like Flash that is the problem.
You might try changing hardware acceleration, a setting within Flash either turn if off or on.

  • Internet slow down due to my IMac

I have been experiencing major problems with my Internet connection, for a couple of weeks and after long troubleshooting hours I concluded that my IMac is causing the problem. Here is my set up:
Road Runner modem --> Vonage V modem --> Netgear Gigabit Switch ----> Cat6 wiring into my home ---> Dlink Gigabit switch in my home office and Linksys wireless router on the 1st floor ---> Imac, PC and an OKI laser connected to the Dlink in my office, all other computers connected to the system either through the Cat6 wiring or through wireless. Xbox 360, Wii, and a Dlink media streamer connected to the by wire to the Linksys router on the 1st floor
I verified the Road Runner modem by connecting directly to it and the speed is amazing, I disconnected the whole network (Removed netgear switch offline) and connected a computer to the Vonage V-modem through the cable modem, again speed was amazing, I started connecting all the other components one at a time, everything worked fine until my IMac came online speed dropped drastically on the whole network (Including my VOIP phone) I did this 3 times with the same results. I now have my Imac Ethernet port deactivated in order to use the rest of the system.
I did a check through the network utility and found the following:

The IP starting with 169 is a self-assigned IP on a machine that cannot connect to the network.
    http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies-archive.cfm/438733.html
It seems you have two routers at work here.
One is assigning IP address of 172. and the other 192.
These are both private IPs assigned by routers.
    The 192 is most common
    The 172 is less common
    Apple uses the 10.
    http://www.duxcw.com/faq/network/privip.htm
So first you have to find out why you have two separate DHCP systems:
    192 and 172
Then you have to address the issue of why the box with the 169. IP is not getting a connection.
The 192.168.15.255 address is most likely the gateway address of the 192.xxx router

  • Win XP on Satellite A300 - SATA HDD slow - eats CPU

    Hello,
I just got a brand new A300-1lA for my job.
Since we have to install XP rather than Vista, I formatted the beast.
After a long afternoon tracking down every driver, it seems I still have problems.
When I initiate a file transfer between the two disks or from the LAN, the cpu load rises to abnormal levels (50% - 70%).
I suspect there's a problem with the disks controller
Now, for the install to work, I had to go into the BIOS and set the SATA controller to "Compatibility".
    Could this be the source?
    Thanks in advance
OH and BTW : I tried to install the drive manager from the Toshiba Website, but it says my computer doesn't have the required configuration

Just wanting to say that I accidentally deleted a part of my last post.
The answer I found was to reinstall XP, but this time with a custom nlite-ed disk including the Intel drivers.
With that, I could set the SATA controller as "AHCI" rather than "Compatibility" , and XP had no problem. The drive now works perfectly.
So, it seems I had problem with the IDE emulation

  • Slow iMac, kernel_task using 1GB memory

My iMac has been running slower and slower over the past year or so.  The problem seems to come and go, but I have been noticing increasing tendency for applications to hang, or to get stuck for minutes with spinning beach balls.  I've been carrying forward software and installations going all the way back to OS X 10.0 (from previous machines) and I probably have made some poor choices regarding installing third-party software in the past.
I've seen some very helpful advice in this forum given to others (for example, here) so I thought I would post my problem here.
I've been watching Activity Monitor, and the only thing I've noticed that seems consistently out of place is that kernel_task is using about 1GB of RAM.  (It was using about 2GB of RAM until I uninstalled Virtual Box, which clearly was a big part of my problems).
I am fully backed up redundantly (locally via Time Machine and remotely via BackBlaze).  I'm holding off upgrading to Yosemite until I can clean this issue up (unless you think it would help).
Below you will find posted two diagnostic reports.  The first is EtreCheck, followed by the results of the Terminal script posted by Linc Davis in this thread
I hope that's sufficient to help the geniuses reading this forum give me some advice.  Thank you in advance for your help.

    Try a restart.
Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.
Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
Try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear and again when you log in. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don’t do them all at once.
