Slow imac. Is an applicaton CleanMyImac 2 safe to use to clean up my imac?
Is CleanMyiMac 2 a safe app to use to clean up my slow machine?
No, it is not safe nor required. It cannot make your Mac faster. If your machine is slow then you need to determine why it is slow.
Things You Can Do To Resolve Slow Downs
If your computer seems to be running slower here are some things you can do:
Start with visits to: OS X Maintenance - MacAttorney;
The X Lab: The X-FAQs;
The Safe Mac » Mac Performance Guide;
The Safe Mac » The myth of the dirty Mac;
Mac maintenance Quick Assist.
Boot into Safe Mode then repair your hard drive and permissions:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions Pre-Lion
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
Repair the Hard Drive - Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilites Menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD disk icon and click on the arrow button below.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. If no errors are reported, then click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Restart your computer normally and see if this has helped any. Next do some maintenance:
For situations Disk Utility cannot handle the best third-party utility is Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible.
Note: Alsoft ships DW on a bootable DVD that will startup Macs running Snow Leopard or earlier. It cannot start Macs that came with Lion or later pre-installed, however, DW will work on those models.
Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep. Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger. These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or later and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive.
Helpful Links Regarding Malware Protection
An excellent link to read is Tom Reed's Mac Malware Guide.
Also, visit The XLab FAQs and read Detecting and avoiding malware and spyware.
See these Apple articles:
Mac OS X Snow Leopard and malware detection
OS X Lion- Protect your Mac from malware
OS X Mountain Lion- Protect your Mac from malware
About file quarantine in OS X
If you require anti-virus protection I recommend using VirusBarrier Express 1.1.6 or Dr.Web Light both from the App Store. They're both free, and since they're from the App Store, they won't destabilize the system. (Thank you to Thomas Reed for these recommendations.)
Troubleshooting Applications
I recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX, Mavericks Cache Cleaner, or Cocktail that you can use for removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc. Corrupted cache, log, or temporary files can cause application or OS X crashes as well as kernel panics.
If you have Snow Leopard or Leopard, then for similar repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line. Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. Applejack does not work with Lion and later.
Basic Backup
For some people Time Machine will be more than adequate. Time Machine is part of OS X. There are two components:
1. A Time Machine preferences panel as part of System Preferences;
2. A Time Machine application located in the Applications folder. It is
used to manage backups and to restore backups. Time Machine
requires a backup drive that is at least twice the capacity of the
drive being backed up.
Alternatively, get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
1. Carbon Copy Cloner
2. Get Backup
3. Deja Vu
4. SuperDuper!
5. Synk Pro
6. Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore. Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files. For help with using Time Machine visit Pondini's Time Machine FAQ for help with all things Time Machine.
Referenced software can be found at MacUpdate.
Additional Hints
Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space.
Add more RAM. If your computer has less than 2 GBs of RAM and you are using OS X Leopard or later, then you can do with more RAM. Snow Leopard and Lion work much better with 4 GBs of RAM than their system minimums. The more concurrent applications you tend to use the more RAM you should have.
Always maintain at least 15 GBs or 10% of your hard drive's capacity as free space, whichever is greater. OS X is frequently accessing your hard drive, so providing adequate free space will keep things from slowing down.
Check for applications that may be hogging the CPU:
Pre-Mavericks
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder. Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu. Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order. If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time (>=70,) then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar. Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process. See if that helps. Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
Mavericks and later
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder. Select All Processes from the View menu. Click on the CPU tab in the toolbar.
Often this problem occurs because of a corrupted cache or preferences file or an attempt to write to a corrupted log file.

Slow iMac, kernel_task using 1GB memory
My iMac has been running slower and slower over the past year or so. The problem seems to come and go, but I have been noticing increasing tendency for applications to hang, or to get stuck for minutes with spinning beach balls. I've been carrying forward software and installations going all the way back to OS X 10.0 (from previous machines) and I probably have made some poor choices regarding installing third-party software in the past.
I've seen some very helpful advice in this forum given to others (for example, here) so I thought I would post my problem here.
I've been watching Activity Monitor, and the only thing I've noticed that seems consistently out of place is that kernel_task is using about 1GB of RAM. (It was using about 2GB of RAM until I uninstalled Virtual Box, which clearly was a big part of my problems).
I am fully backed up redundantly (locally via Time Machine and remotely via BackBlaze). I'm holding off upgrading to Yosemite until I can clean this issue up (unless you think it would help).
Below you will find posted two diagnostic reports. The first is EtreCheck, followed by the results of the Terminal script posted by Linc Davis in this thread
I hope that's sufficient to help the geniuses reading this forum give me some advice. Thank you in advance for your help.

Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.
Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
Try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account. Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear and again when you log in. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don’t do them all at once.

I am trying to troubleshoot a slow iMac. EtreCheck showed that com.adobe.CS5ServiceManager.plist failed. Not sure if this is important or how to fix. Any suggestions?

slow imac, how to check status and clean up disc?
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Speeding up my slow iMac 20.5"?
I have two iMacs:
(1) My main iMac is a late 2009 20.5" with 12 GB of RAM running 10.7.
(2) There is another iMac here, which has just been gathering dust. It is a mid-2007 iMac 24" with 1 GB of RAM running 10.6.4.
I decided to upgrade the old iMac's software because it seems to be compatible with Mountain Lion (if I add more RAM). So I just turned it on before.
What struck me was how much faster the old iMac is than my current iMac!
For example, Safari will open almost instantlly, while there is a lag in opening mine.
On the old iMac there don't seem to be lags, or beachballs.
I wonder if my daily-use newer iMac has "garbage" in it that needs to be cleaned out. Maybe too many restores from backups over the years? Old stuff I'm not using?
What do people use to "clean up" their iMacs and getting them speedy again?
Thanks,
dougBee,
I should clarify that my iMac 20.5 inch is not "slow like it is broken" slow. It just has some lags, particularly when switching applications, or beginning new input, and some beachballs, which I think it ought not to. Especially since I have 12 GB of RAM.
As far as disk space, 103 GB out of 500 GB is currently free.
For the mid-2007 iMac I intend to go over to Akihabara today and get either 2 x 2 GB of RAM (officially supported) or 2 + 4 GB of RAM (unofficially works) to upgrade the older iMac so I can install Mountain Lion on it. That machine is just really for a backup in case this machine needs repair (which it has in the past).
Michelle,
I have Onyx here, but haven't tried it yet. I will give that a go. Thanks.

Is is safe to use a TENS unit while working on my iMac?
I use a TENS unit for back pain. Since it discharges electrical currents, I'm wondering if it's safe to use it while I'm on the computer. Thanks.
I have little or no knowledge on this subject but I see no one else is answering so...
Have you considered one of the downloadable VNC apps, such as "Chicken of the VNC"? There are others also. -
IPad cable/charger safe to use w/ iPhone?
Is it safe to use the iPad sync cable and charger accessory (the ac adapter, not the one that came with the device) with iPhone or iPod? It would be convenient to not have to have separate cables laying around but I don't want to fry my stuff.
The cables aren't or shouldn't be a problem, but the iPad's charger might be. It is possible to charge an iPad with the wall charger included with the iPhone or iPod, but charging will be slower with the iPad when doing so vs using the wall charger included with the iPad.
Per this link, the Pad's wall charger indicates it is compatible with the iPad. No iPhone or iPod models are included.

Is it safe to use the Belkin power strip with USB ports to charge my iPad?
Or is it better to travel with the Wall Charger provided with iPad?
Concerned about safety of the device. Thanks for your thoughts. The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.
How to Calibrate Your Mac, iPhone, or iPad Battery
http://www.macblend.com/how-to-calibrate-your-mac-iphone-or-ipad-battery/
At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night. Is MacKeeper safe to use?
Since starting with Facebook my computer is gradually getting slower and slower. Sitting and waiting for the cute little pinwheel to go away is aggravating at the least. I keep getting ads for MacKeeper...... is it safe to use? It is worth the effort?
I clear the cache etc. every couple days and reset Safari every week or two. It will run okay for a couple days and then I'm back to getting the pinwheel.MamaWolf
First off, thank you for the prompt and detailed information. This will help us troubleshoot a little better.
Now for your first question about "where is the home folder?":
Double-click your hard drive icon and open it. On the left hand side, there should be a column of icons, one of which should look like a house and have your user name under it. This is your home folder, and is the default folder for a lot of things. Right-click on the house (or control-click, if you only have a one-button mouse) and then select "get info". A window should pop up with a bunch of details about the home folder, and the second line you see should be "Size". Please let us know what that number is.
And as for using 10.4.11 - please don't apologize. While it's not the "latest and greatest" it is still a viable and flexible operating system. I still have a 10.4.11 drive for my G5 Powermac - I occasionally use "Classic" (and 10.4.11 is the LAST operating system to use Classic), and I think it runs a little bit faster than 10.5 Leopard.
OK, Good that you automatically run Software Update.
However, I notice that you only have 1GB of RAM. I think the single most important thing that you could do for your system slowdowns is to ad more RAM. I *believe* that you are running a QuickSilver 2002 G4 (I'm not an expert on the PowerMac G4), and the maximum RAM it can take is 1.5GB, which means that you *should* be able to add one more 512MB RAM module to the computer. It will make a difference in speed.
To repair permissions on your hard drive: Open up the Applications folder. In the Applications folder, there is a folder called "Utilities" - open this. Then find the program called "Disk Utility". Run this. When Disk Utility pops up, there will be a list of all of your drives (hard drives, and any mounted CDs or DVDs) on the left hand side. Select your hard drive then go to the lower center of the window and click "repair disk permissions". Let it run - this may take a while. You may want to run "repair disk permissions" twice just to make sure.
Activity monitor will tell you what is running on your computer - you say that you are only running only one program at a time, but if that program is Safari (or another web browser) you will start to notice slowdowns if you have several tabs open at once (especially only with 1GB of RAM). Go back to the same Utilities folder (inside of the Applications folder) that you opened for Disk Utility. (It's the same folder that Disk Utility is in.) Find the Activity Monitor program in this folder, and run it. At the center top of the program window, there should be a drop-down menu - click it and select "all processes". Look at the listing below - there are all of the programs and processes that are running on your Mac right now. As you go across the top row, you will see "Process Name", "User", "CPU" and more stuff. Click the little box that says "CPU" until you get a down arrow (or downward pointing triangle). This will order the list of programs in descending order, starting with whatever is using most of your CPU...the numbers in this column are the percentage of your CPU that the programs are taking. If you have one program that is taking, say 80% or more, then this will also slow your computer down as it devotes is resorces to that one program at the expense of other things.
Also, at the bottom of the Activity Monitor window, there should be several choices including "CPU", "System Memory", "Disk Activity" and so on. Click on "System Memory". This will tell you how much of your RAM is being used at the moment (if there is a pie chart, the more green the better!). It will also tell you "VM size" and "Page ins" and "Page outs". VM is "virtual memory" - when your computer runs out of real RAM, it starts storing things on the hard drive - pretending the hard drive is "real RAM". However, the hard drive is many, many times slower than ream RAM, so this will slow your machine down. The "Page ins" and "Page outs" will tell you how much this Virtual Memory is being used. The only cure for this is to add more real RAM to your computer.
Whew. My fingers are tired. LOL I hope this wasn't to eye-straining to read! Just respond back with any more questions...we're here to help!

Flash fried my mac according to apple store. is flash 11 safe to use?
I have a 6 month old i7 mac book pro. i am a regular user of flash based games and one day i noticed that the mac was extreamly slow in booting and the top right corner of the mac would become VERY hot.
i took it to apple and they found no hardwear problems and reinstalled it. they did however tell me that it was the flash that was cousing the problems and i should not use it.
does anyone else have experience of this and do people know if the so called mac flash 11 is safe to use?
Thanks for your input. While Flash does eat up CPU resources quite quickly, it isn't dangerous to use. Yes, it will cause your Mac to heat up, but the fans should keep up with the heat and you'll experience a thermal shutdown long before any damage could be caused.
I think that the techs are over-reacting... go ahead and use Flash.
My 2¢...

ITunes 11.1.3.8, safe to use?
Is iTunes 11.1.3.8 safe to use with Windows 7 and an iPod Classic?
I am currently at 11.1.1.1 (and held off on that until they fixed the podcast issues) since I remember there were alot of problems with some devices no longer being recognized to sync, but I think that was mainly Win 8 or 8.1?Works fine for me.
