Slow iMac on start up etrecheck finds problems
After 5 yrs of use my 2009 iMac hard drive crashed. Repaired by an Apple Approved Repair Centre (1TB WD HD) only one month ago.
I am already suffering slow start up on Safari.
Found EtreCheck Software through Apple Forums and it found some malware, which I got rid of by the recommended download of Adware medic.
However, on start up this morning it was slow on start up of Safari again, and a run of EtreCheck showed that it had killed several start up files under Start Up Items, Problem System Launch Agents and Problem System Launch Daemons!
What are these things and what is happening to my computer.
If I cannot resolve obviously I will have to take it back to KRCS in Derby
Thank you inanticipation
Garry Purdy

Slow imac with osx mavericks and other problems
I have a late 2012 imac, after uprgrading to mavericks it is jerky, laggy, not very smooth, my internet is up and down, and many things in system preferences are not working even tough im an administrator. How can i fix this?

My iMac Version 10.6.8 has problems starting up. I often get a white screen without the apple icon. Then I must turn the computer off and restart. Restarting will usually bring up the Apple icon and the start screen. What could be causing this? And how can I resolve this issue. My Mac is still under warranty, I've had it just 7 months.
Reset the NVRAM/PRAM and Reset the SMC.

Hello, see how many of these you can answer...
See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...
http://support.apple.com/kb/PH7029
Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
In the Memory tab of Activity Monitor, are there a lot of Pageouts?
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

My iMac g5 starts up , responds slow, freezes after approx. 2 minutes, then upper fan starts running high and loud. Any ideas on what could be wrong? Worth fixing?
Could be over-heating. Try cleaning out the air vents.

I have a 27" iMac from 2011. It has been sluggish for some time, not sure if more so after upgrading to Yosemite. I took it into an Apple store 2 months ago and had them run their full diagnostics over night on it since I was the end of my applecare plan and they came up with nothing. But it is still sluggish. For example if I control click on an item in my finder and hover of the Open with... - I look at the word "fetching" for about 5 seconds sometimes. It was never like this. Slowness is not app specific but just getting around on my Mac.
Looking at Activity Monitor I notice a few things only that stand out to my novice eyes. Under DPU I seem to always have com.apple.geod (Not Responding) in red. I quite it but it always seems to find its way back. I have searched the forums and found nothing to help me be rid of it as a problem, some say wait for Apple to fix. The other thing I noticed today after reviewing my first EtreCheck report and looking at Memory in Activity Monitor was that the top two items listed were:
Image Capture Extension which as using I think 1.6 GB before I quite it.
kernal_task using 1.06 GB of memory. (QUESTION: Can I just Quite a Kernal Task like this or will that crash my system or should I assume I need it?)
If I need more RAM, I am happy to get more - I have 8GB now and see that I can add to two more - I just don't know where to buy it, (Apple does not have it for sale it seems) and if I need to be cautious about some vendors, and what exactly I am looking for. I am guessing adding two more 4 GB cards to boost me from 8GB total to 16GB total. HELP WITH THIS?
I was hoping for some guidance appreciate the help.
Below are 2 EtreCheck reports - the second after I removed Parallels from my computer and a number of other unused apps and Library Preferences and quit the Image Capture Extension listed in Memory in Activity Monitor.

Mar 7, 2015, 12:15:17 AM /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/LegacyFileVaultMessageTracer_2015-03-07-001517_ [redacted].crashWhen you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. -
The new firefox twitter app (mini tab on left of page) is great - except it disappears every time I shut down the computer and I have to remove and then reinstall it every day!?? It won't appear on the page until I do. I am working on an iMac - if that is causing the problem ...? Thanks.
Eustace, thank you so much for writing back. I will try what you suggested!!
thx for your reply - apparently when I went to the Apple store a long time ago, they restore maybe photos and itunes etc from my external hard drive (passport). I guess at that time they reinstalled an earlier operating system than my macbook came with and that somehow corrupted FileVault. apparently there was no sparse bundle (whatever that is) for my old admin account and they said that ever since the install of the older OS that it was actually NEVER backing up anything in my admin account.
Then, I bought Time Capsule and starting backing up to that instead. I started having problems with it being slow etc and then StartUp Disk full errors and didn't know what to do, so I "Restored" from Time Capsule and that's when I lost everything in my Admin account and was locked out when I tried to log in - it said File Vault error ..."
anyway - that's THAT sad story. I was told to create a new admin account and I've basically been trying to start over - even though I have a partial save of my computer in Crash Plan and I DO see a sparse bundle listed in there, but I just don't know enough about computers to know if it's something I can get back or if I am just totally doomed.
I'm afraid to reinstall anything because if there is even a remote shot that the other files are still floating around in my computer, I feel like that chance will be shot forever. I need to hire McGee from NCIS, I just KNOW he could get those files back for me!!! -

mac pro too slow to use, spinning ball, no finder response, only hard power off, installing system stalls at 18 minutes left.
It is taking an hour to power up and mac apple logo appear onscreen. No finder controls or "clicks" are being recognized. Spinning beachball all the time.
Using hard power off and holding the mouse down, I was able to open the optical drive and then restart with "c" and ask the dvd to reinstall the system, but it has stalled before finishing the installation.
This happened about 4 days ago, first it started responding slowly, and then it just keeps spinning the beachball. I can't find hardware test. I did run etrecheck, it did not have any error messages, but I can't copy or move the data anywhere.... I am not able to access the mac pro with another machine, and now I am stuck in install freeze, so I can't copy etrecheck by hand onto a piece of paper.
Without being able to finish a reinstall, what can I try?
After it got bad, and before it got REALLY bad, I managed to repair permissions, but it took a long time. Most of a day. When I restarted from that, things were only worse.
Mac Pro 1,1 , 11 GB ram, 7300, 5TB hard drives, OS 10.6.8, the drive containing the system folder is/was 700 used, 290 free. While I could get commands to respond, I put Activity monitor on the desktop and watched it. System memory was 3.31 GB used, about 7 free, and some wired. No app was using a huge amount.
what should I try next? I put a bid on a new/old machine so that I could move the 4 hard drives over.Thank you for all your suggestions. Please correct me as I articulate this.
I have three versions( 5, 6, CC) of the Adobe Master Collection which I keep active for different clients. I have final cut and motion. I have Office 365. I have a collection of graphic apps that are individually not too big but in all, my app folder is 65GB and my bootcamp partition is 61GB. I can't fit all this on 120 ssd and a 256 will be full once I install, correct? drives should be half open?
Somehow I did not make it clear enough that I was trying to copy onto a 2TB drive I had just initiallized in order to try and save files from my startup drive. I don't use time machine. I take a day or a few days worth of documents and physically move them to another drive at night. If a series is finished I make two dvd's as well. The second black drive that was failing was the drive I moved my backup documents onto. At no point was I trying to backup onto the failing drives. I was trying to copy off both of them onto the other two drives, a third aux backup that has been there for a while, and a newish 2 TB which I designated as the startup drive when all this trouble started.
I wondered if there were any good techniques for trying to get the data off the failing drive. Thanks for the suggestion of Data Rescue 3. I don't have it yet, but I will try it as soon as I get it. I was never trying to repair in place.
I am very interested in getting a pci bracket and an ssd, but I may wait until I can afford the larger one. If I get an older bracket that is compatible with my old mac pro 1,1 , I'd like to be able to move it to a mac pro 3,1 if I get one. Will the larger ssd drives be compatible with the sata in a pci bracket that can work in my mac pro 1,1 ? sata 2 versus something else? If 240 or 256 is my size limit, how much more than my 65 and 61 GB partitions can I put on there? How much of a scratch disc can I make if I leave another 39 GB of headroom on my bootcamp partition? I'm filling 165 GB without making any allowance for temp files.
You have said that 120 is enough for any system. I think I must be misunderstanding something. Are you saying that assuming that most people run office and photoshop and maybe lightroom?
I have and use 4 HDD in this machine, mostly for document storage in two places.
I took out all but the group of 2GB ram chips I bought a year and a half ago. The old ram had passed the hardware test the last time I had access to the hardware test. Two black drives failed, one was a year old and one was a year and a half old, and that it may have been exacerbated by the heat wave. I don't know why the video and the monitor were affected save that the startup drive was failing. I am trying to replace the card.
With all this said, I am also looking at a used mac pro 3,1 with a better video card since a newer machine will likley be compatible through another OS upgrade. If a machine costs only a little more than a new card, it might be a better way to go.
I don't have any sources that offer an ssd for 100. ( of a size that is useful)
