Slow importing of CD's

I have seen many strings on this topic, but so far have not seen any solid resolutions. I've tried every single thing that people have suggested and I cannot get higher than a 2.4x import speed. It's RIDICULOUS that the quality of this feature has gone backwards instead of forwards.
Please tell me someone has found a solution or Apple has fixed it!!!!!!!!

As a workaround until it gets fixed, you can rip your CDs in any available program, such as Windows Media Player, and add the resulting MP3s to your iTunes library.

Aperture 3.1.3 Very slow importing raw files please help
Pro Photographer. I have a Mac Pro Quad core 1 yr old with 12GB Ram. I import via 2 Firewire 800 card readers - A Lexar & a UDMR Reader.Only using them singly. System has 4 1TB hard drives 1. Applications, 2. Aperture Library, 3. Aperture Vault, 4 Time Machine
On a photo shoot, first CF card may download and complete in less than a minute but the next card with a similar number of images may take 10 minutes.
Sometimes if I swap card readers, this can speed up download but then everything slowly grinds to a halt.
I have closed down all other programmes, switched off Faces and Enable Gestures - switched off  Look up places.
Situation driving me nuts as we shoot and view images with customers immediately after the session and download time effecting the amount of time we have to do this. Nothing seems logical as such a high spec machine should theoretically fly through this.

Have you upgraded your OS ans all your Apps to the latest Versions and also rebooted the system?
Turn on the Activity Viewer (Windows ->Show Activity) while importing, to see how Aperture is spending its time.
Also launch some tools from the Application -> Utilities folder:
launch the Console window, to check for diagnostics /error messages
launch the Activity Viewer, to see how much RAM and CPU time Aperture and other processes are using.
How much space is free on your system drive? And on the drive you are importing to?
If you find in the Activity Viewer, that Aperture is slow, but de facto using not much CPU time, then the problem may be a corrupted Aperture Library or corrupted preference files.
Try to import into a new, empty Aperture library and see if the problem persists.
If you have no problems with a new Library, try the Aperture 3: Troubleshooting Basics:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3805
Start with repairing permissions and repairing the library.
If none of the measures outlined there, or you need further help, please report back.

  • Aperture sometimes slow import slow reaction on highligts and shadows

    1. Aperture sometimes, one out of three times perform a slow import from a compactflash card. Normally 10 images (nikon d-200 10 mb) in less than a minute. Sometimes the same ammount takes more than 5 minutes. Reconnecting the cardreader on the front usb connection solves the problem.
    2. Using the sliders on highlights and shadows, the adjustment of image takes a little time, no instant reaction.
    3. Aperture is installed on a 250 gb hd (first) (standard installation version 1.5.2). The data is installed on a second 500 gb internal drive. Drives never go to sleep. 4GB internal ram. Video card 7300 GT.
I have talked to different people about this performance issue and got different answers, which range from:
    a. This is the best performance with aperture with the current system. If you want more buy a better video card.
    b. Your video card is bad, mainly the vram. Replace the video card (warrenty still applicable).

Mac OS X 10.4.9 to boost image import speeds
    By Prince McLean
    Published: 09:35 AM EST
Apple this week dropped yet another pair of pre-release Mac OS X 10.4.9 builds on its developer crowd, inching the software closer to a public release.
The diligence with which the Cupertino-based company has been refining the software may signal that Mac OS X 10.4.9 will be the final maintenance update to Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger before attention is drawn solely to Leopard.
As was the case with prior seeds, developer notes accompanying the latest builds -- 8P2132 (Intel) and 8P132 (PowerPC) -- are said to reflect no known issues with the software.
People familiar with the latest pre-release say Apple notes just one significant change since builds 8P2130 and 8P130 were issued last week, specifically a bug fix to ImageIO that was affecting image import speeds.
    This is from Apple Insider.

  • Incredibly slow import

I have a G5 with 4.5 GB RAM and a 74 GB 10,000 RPM Raptor Boot drive running LR with a 400 GB 7200 RPM Western Digital Internal drive holding my image files. I'm importing photos from a 133x Lexar SD card and a fast USB 2.0 reader. No problem with my hardware at all, as I can import files into Aperture VERY quickly.
I'm giving LR a try and the first thing I noticed is how much slower it is at importing photos. Like a full 2-3 minutes for importing 56 RAW files vs. about 25 seconds for Aperture. I'm new to LR so don't know all the tweaks yet, but I did turn off the "write develop settings to XMP" option. I never use Bridge or ACR and once I choose between Aperture or LR I won't be using any other RAW converter, so turning this off isn't a problem for me.
Can anyone suggest any other tweaks or potential reasons for the slow import. I have "convert to DNG" selected - could that be the problem?
    Thanks.

    Hi there,
I upgraded to 2.0 on Friday, and have only done a library conversion so far. After reading your post, I was curious, and wanted to immediately tried a card import to see if I was getting the same slowness.
My usual workflow involves Photo Mechanic for card ingest, original backup, and first pass editing, then import the goodies from hard disk to Aperture, so I typically would not see a card issue.
I have a Firewire 800 reader, but was using a Sandisk Extreme III card for test. I put it into my Nikon D200, shot 30 shots, into the D300, another 30 and then the D3, for 39 shots. All RAW, the 200's are about 9MB, the 300's are 16MB and the D3 were around 24MB. The 99 images, about 1.6GB were in my Aperture library in a little under 4 minutes. I will assume using the UDMA cards may speed that up...but I was not put off by the speed I witnessed.
I will say that Apple's USB 2.0 implementation is VERY slow...sadly it is really awful compared to a typical PC...the good news is that Firewire is MUCH faster. If you are not aware of this difference...take any hard drive that has both FW and USB 2.0 interfaces, and run a disk benchmark using each interface. On a PC, the numbers will be similar...on a Mac the USB is just a lot slower. Soooo...while I don't think this would answer why any import would take HOURS...I would strongly recommend that you have FW card readers on a Mac.

  • Mysteriously slow import

    Hey,
I started to import two double CDs. I last imported a CD a couple days ago, and only new thing on computer (which does interact with iTunes) is Ask The DJ. Checked/repaired permissions from HD Utility before and after.
Three CD's and all but the last two tracks go like clockwork, before I suddenly notice the fourth disk has not ejected 10 minutes after insertion. Cancelling and importing last two again leads iTunes to indicate they will take 25 & 30 minutes to import...and and a few ours hour later the first is still importing. The tracks are 4 and five minutes in length.
Have ejected disk, quit iTunes, re-impoted and really slow import drags on.
In the dock clicking on the iTunes icon offers "force quit" at bottom and "iTunes not responding" at the top of menu. Does this indicate the import has already failed. Actually the first of these problem tracks arrived in the library, after 30 minutes, but with some 'scratch like' interruptions.
What do you think is going on?

Hi Winston, well, I've examined the disk which has a minisule scratch but is basically spotless...I keep my CDs in their cases. I've given it a wipe with some soft cloth.
Last week my brand new Superdrive imported from a CD with scratches on like it was a cats plaything.

  • Glacially-slow import from camera

I am using iPhoto 7.1.3 on a dual 2 GHz PowerMac running 10.4.11 with 2 GB RAM. Tons of free hard drive space. Importing photos from my Panasonic DMC-FZ10 camera, formerly (3-4 months ago?) taking about 2-3 seconds per photo, is now taking a glacial 14 seconds per photo. I have not changed iPhoto or camera settings in interim. What gives? How can this be speeded back to previous normal?

    Nathan,
Thank you for your helpful reply. The answer to your question is "no", and I will try that. But meanwhile, I found that the new iPhoto feature to separate into Events on import must have been auto-enabled when I did my iLife update a couple of months ago. I disabled it, and now importing seems to be back to the 2-seconds-per-photo range it was pre iLife upgrade. I'm also using a different chip, so this is not yet conclusive evidence. i.e. it could be the slow import was specific to the chip I was importing from earlier. I'll try to run some tests in the next day or two.

  • I am experiencing very slow import and backing up issues.

I am experiencing very slow import and backing up catalog on exiting Lightroom. This is a very recent issue. I use RAW files.

The type of files you are importing will have an effect on the speed of the import process. Larger files, like raw sensor files, are normally much larger than JPG files.
But if this is something new, the slowness, and you are using the same camera with the same size files as previously then it's not just the file size.
What type of computer and what operating system are you using.

Can anyone help me. i am running windows xp with service pack 3 and i am running itunes 9. i have no problems importing songs from the itunes store when i am online . however when i want to import a cd into itunes, the import times are extremely slow. importing around .06x not like i use to 2-3x .im not sure which settings need to be changed. seems like this happened after updating windows.any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi sadielexus1,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. If your imported music never syncs to your iPhone, you may want to try un-checking and then re-checking the "Sync music" checkbox in iTunes by following the steps in the article below:

  • New update causes painfully slow import time

Is anyone else feeling the pain of REALLY slow imports?  On a typical shoot, I may have more than 1,000 images to import.  I never had a problem before this recent update to 3.3.1.  Before, it took, I don't know, maybe 20 minutes to upload all the photos (RAW 12 megapixel files), plus some time for processing.  Now, it takes 20 minutes to import just 75 images.  So last night, I did the import of 900 before I went to sleep.  I imagine it took two or more hours.
I have the previews set to standard, and nothing else appears to be different from before.  It just seems kind of ridiculous.

Your Aperture library may be damaged. I did not notice any new slowness when importing with Aperture 3.3.1. If your Aperture library is causing this, then the import should be much faster, if you import into a new, empty library - you may want to make test import to compare import times.
If it is indeed the library, use the Aperture "Library First Aid Tools" to repair the permissions and to repair the database:
Repairing and Rebuilding Your Aperture Library

  • Sudden ultra-slow importing issue in LR5.2 - possibly smart collection related?

I've been using LR for almost two years now, and have never seen this before:
This evening I wanted to import a series of images from my card reader using LR (just updated to 5.2 from the 5.2RC); I have ~240 images to import. I always have LR set to convert to DNG on import, and also to save a backup of the original raw file (NEF) onto a separate HDD at the same time. LR has always been pretty fast to carry out this process: normally just a few minutes are required for that amount of images (not including rendering previews once the DNGs are imported). However, today it's suddenly become painfully slow - as I type this, it's so far managed to import a mere 58 images, having so far taken about an hour and twenty minutes! Each image is being added one at a time, with a long pause before the next one clocks up in the 'current import' folder. I've never seen such slow performance with LR before.
I wonder if this is a bug connected to the final release of 5.2? I doubt it, as I would have expected to have heard about this by now, but you never know...
I have recently - in the past few days - set up a number (at least 80) of new smart collections that pick up raw images taken at specific focal lengths, as well as another set picking up specific apertures used for each raw shot in the catalogue (unlike the majority of my pre-existing smart collections, these new collections are purely there for interest really - nice to see which focal lengths are the most used for example - but don't serve as an aid to any specific workflow). In short, I've greatly increased the number of smart collections running in my catalogue. Would having a significant number of smart collections slow down the image ingestion process? For example, is LR updating individual smart collections on the fly as images are imported, and thus having to pick through each collection in order to complete the import (I'd always assumed that this would all be added to a central index in the catalogue that the smart collections feed from, but perhaps there are multiple indexes, one for each smart collection)?
I guess the other possible cause could be a corrupt catalogue, although both the catalogue integrity check and optimisation complete without a hitch and everything else seems to be fine.
I'm on Win7 x64, running the LR catalogue and previews from an SSD (with images stored on a separate HDD), with an i7 3770K CPU, 16GB RAM, and an AMD 5850 Radeon graphics card.
I'd be most grateful to hear the opinions of other LR users.
    M

This just started happening to me as well. EVerything was fine and import was what I consider normal until 2 days ago. Had trouble with one camera which kept losing connection. I import from the camera directly...copy as DNG to an internal hard drive. Now all my cameras are importing at a ridiculously slow rate of speed. As far as I know I changed nothing to make this happen. Very odd and cannot find anything about it except for your post. Anyone else out there experiencing this?

  • Abnormal slow import

My aperture importer plugin has been working away for about 90 hours now and is still on 23% . I have asked Adobe, and posted here, and I still can't decide what to do. Should I abandon or wait?
I am trying to import a 265GB managed aperture library into a managed lightroom catalogue which is on my main drive and the masters onto an external drive which is 1TB with 700GB remaining space. (my main mac drive has 150GB remaining and was bought in late 2013)
My Toshiba external drive is supposed to be 3.0 USB and is currently flashing or sticking on blue light, but sometimes I notice it's a white light. I read somewhere that white means it's only going on a 2.0 speed?? But even when it's on a blue light it seems slow. At 8pm last night it went up to 21% and it's now nealry 3pm the next day and it's still on 23%. When I look on the external drive, the folder of masters is only at about 55gb so far.
Other than the location of the masters on the external drive, i didnt get a chance to change any options, so I have no idea what previews are importing. I also don't understand if the xmp (?) lens data is importing or not. When you google for answers as a "layperson" it is incredibly difficult to get an idea of what's really happening.
What shall I do? Abandon? I can't bear to use Aperture anymore it's so slow. I want to use Lightroom. But I can't do the imports of my folder structure one by one, I would get so confused and i dont have time. And I haven't any guarantees that this automatic plugin thing will successfully reproduce my aperture project/folder structure.... do I????
The other question is, if my external 3.0 Toshiba drive, (bought a few months ago) is not trustworthy (because sometimes it's only operating at 2.0), should I actually be putting these on some other kind of drive? Like should I invest in a thunderbolt? To add to the annoyance I have just remembed that this particular external drive doesnt seem to work with my laptop, a macbook pro,, which is late 2008, it just doesn't even get recognised by it - so I can't take this drive with all my masters on away with me. Any clues as to what's happening here?

So ,I thought you all might like an update to my snail-pace import situation using the Aperture plugin. It was importing for a week and day and got to 31% - then unfortunately my computer suddenly crashed - I was asking it to do too many things at the same time.
I was interested to see how Lightroom had coped with the crash - I thought most likely Lightroom would not have managed to put in metadata or even remember any of the photos, let alone put them into correct project folders, but it has!!!
However - that is not of any use to me if I can't work out which photos from Aperture it has NOT YET imported, so that I can import them. After all, Aperture still has 69% of my photos still not yet imported into LIghtroom.
I don't know if the %31 of photos were moved or just copied out of Aperture (I have to try and check)
Can anyone think of a way I can now get the 69% into Lightroom manually, when I don't know exactly which they are? Otherwise Im going to get into mega confusion switching between albums in Aperture and Folder structure in Lightroom, trying to compare them!!!

  • Aperture slow import

I have a strange problem that has just appeared in Aperture V3. Everything works fine until i try to import pictures from my Memory card. The program just goes very slow and import takes ages, its a full min before i can even see the card etc. I get the spinning ball of death for about 35 seconds then drives etc start to appear on the left side. Once the pictures have imported then they take an age to process this never used to do this. Up until i put the card into the card reader aperture runs a dream with zero problems. I have rebuilt the library and the pictures do scroll a little better and the thumbnails appear faster. Can anybody help with this problem as it never used to do it.

I would suggest amending your workflow,
    1. Insert your card
    2. Copy the images from the card to a HDD
    3. Eject the card, (leaving images on there!)
    4. Import into Aperture
    5. Backup
    6. Reformat card in camera
I Found switching to this workflow speed the process dramatically and has a number of benefits with regard to image file integrity.

  • IPhotos 4 and Slow Importing

    Hi all!
Recently I have noticed that my iPhoto 4 software is getting VERY slow when I import pictures. I have an iMac G4 with 512 mb of Ram and all of my photos on an external La Cie HD. It used to run quite well and then it started hanging up and taking a very long time to import. It no longer brings up the thumbnails when importing and can take 10 minutes to start the process. I have used a different memory card and different cameras all with the same results. I can't think of anything that changed, as in new hardware or software that could affect it. Any help would be greatly appreciated as it is almost unusable as it is!
    Thanks!
    Eric

Hi, Eric, and welcome to Apple Discussions. What is the total capacity of your iMac's hard drive, and how much space is available on it? (Click once on the drive's icon on the desktop and choose Get Info from the File menu.)
If you have less than 3-5GB of available hard drive space and/or if it's been a long time since you performed any routine maintenance on your Mac, it's due for a tuneup and perhaps a cleanup. Post back with the figures requested above and we'll take it from there.
