Slow infinity speed since install.

Out of interest could people post there distance from cab VS. speed.
I had infinity option 2 installed about 3 weeks ago now. When the original open reach engineer installed the service he said that there was something not right with it, I was getting download speeds of 8 mb. He conducted internal house wiring and also tested the drop wire to the dp, same speed.
Long story short another openreach engineer has come out today and informed me that 8mb is the correct speed and that i wouldn't achieve any more. He didnt test the speed at the pole so I have asked them to do this to see what comes back but I would be interested to know what other people are getting at around 900-1000m from the cab.
i was orginally quoted 16.1mb i find it had to believe that half is correct...

We're about 800m from the cabinet (I'd originally thought we were nearer to around 300-400m but google maps proved me wrong!)
I've just upgraded to Infinity 2 today and our download speeds have increased from around 37.5 Mbps to 42.5 Mbps.
I guess it all depends on the route the cable takes and the quality of the copper (our house is about 11 years old and so I'm guessing the BT lines are about the same age), but I would have thought you could achieve more than 8Mbps if we're getting over 40Mbps being only slightly closer to the cabinet than you.

  • Slow video buffering since installing maverick

    I have had slow video buffering since installing Maverick,any suggestions?

    I have had this issue before as well
    My system was also occasionally completely unresponsive after the Mavericks upgrade. (It's been through 4, now)
    So, I backed up all my files with time machine and performed a clean install and all my issues were compltely resolved. Including the slow buffering. Although doing this was a tedious, long, and aggravaiting process, my issues were resolved. Good luck, or whatever, if you are still having this problem as this (even though not an ideal one) is a solution.

  • VERY slow wireless speeds since Infinity 2 upgrade

    I don't know whether it is just coincidence or not but ever since BT upgraded my Infinity Unlimited to Infinity 2, the wireless speeds on my home network have been ridiculously slow. With a wired connection I get about 55-65 Mbps download and 10-15Mbps upload typically, while on wireless it's a fraction of that. For instance, the last test I did gave 3.33Mbps download and 0.13Mbps upload! I have tried different routers, tried changing the wireless channels, tried turning off other wireless equipment in the house, all to no avail. The strange thing is, the wireless signal strength is showing good to excellent. The speeds I obtained when Infinity was first installed were typically around 20Mbps download and 7-8Mbps upload.
    I have contacted BT India and they said they were going to run some tests today, but I can't imagine how they are going to diagnose this problem remotely. Has anyone any ideas about what could be causing this and how I can go about finding a solution?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    I am rather hoping that an engineer will be able to confirm whether or not the wireless signal is being degraded by interference and if so, what might be the cause and/or the general direction it is coming from. I have carried out all the tests I can do on my own, such as changing channels, routers, etc and turning off any other electronic devices in my home that emit radio signals, but nothing has made a jot of difference. All I know is that until a couple of months or so I had a great wireless signal, but now I do not. I can't find the cause without the help of an expert (i.e., BT engineer) coming to check what is going on. If BT are only interested in providing a good signal by ethernet cable, then they shouldn't be adverting on the TV how great their HH3 is at distributing a wireless signal around the home if it only works like that some of the time or for some people.

  • Slow Infinity speed

    I had BT Infinity (option 2) installed May 1st 2012. After waiting 10 days for speed to settle down, I checked my speed yesterday & today with the bt speedtester & speedtest.net & results are showing as an average 16 download & 4.50 upload.
     I did everything that BT advised via their 'How can i test my BT Infinity speed?' site ( checking connections, disabling anti-virus etc), as well as resetting the modem & hub, but results still showing average speed as mentioned above.
    I have run a PC Healthcheck via 'BT broadband desktop help' on my PC which is only a few months old & is running a wired connection to the hub, but I still have these very low speeds.
    Can anyone give me any advice?
    Thanks

    Hi
     Hi Aarong,
    My estimates are 28.3 download, 5.7 upload. See results above from latest speedtest. It looks like the max acheivable speed (20Mbps) is same as previous BB package, not Infinity, even though my online bill page shows service as 'up to 76Mbps'.

  • Slow Infinity speed on Xbox, PS3 and Sky despite h...

    I have recently switched from Sky to BT and have a BT Infinity 2 package. My computer is working well and achieves a very good speed - 76Mps down. I am delighted with this. However, despite all my devices being 'hard wired' via ethernet I am getting very slow dowload speeds on my xbox, ps3 and Sky HD box.
    Sky Anytime + Takes over an hour to be ready to play an SD movie
    Iplayer constantly buffers on PS3 and Xbox
    A 56mb File on Xbox live takes 10+ minutes to download (dread to think how long a large file would take!)
    I have tried swapping the ports and cables and have tried resetting the homehub. There are no faults on the line and I have had an engineer look at the installation.
    I am now very frustrated as when I was with sky on an 8mb connection I had no problems at all with all my devices.
    Does anyone out there have any ideas? I would be really grateful them as I am thinking of going back to what worked!
    Thanks

  • Slow Infinity speeds - Profile problems

    Hello All,
                I have had the Infinity package since 6/7/2011 with speeds estimated at 34 mb/s. So far the maximum I have received is 10mb/s, and only on one PC for a short time, the average being about 4-5 mb/s.
         On Saturday the 23/7/2011 I ran speed tests using http://speedtester.bt.com/, after disconnecting all but one device from the hub and was recieving about 10mbs, which was confirmed by BT over the phone. I was told that there was a problem with my profile and i was recieving the minimum speed and the profile was reset.
       So far my service has not improved, ping and speed both fluctuating wildly with the maximum i have observed to be 7mb/s average about 4.
     My phone has been getting a ping of 140 and speed around 200kps, before the reset ping was around 40 and speed 1-2 mps.
     I know it has not yet been 10 days, but i have been paying for infinity for most of a month but recieving a service that is often inferior to the regular bt broadband and the profile reset does not seem to be working and several posts that i have seen say that it should only take 3-4 days for major improvement.
     Should i wait until it has been 10 days or complain again?
    Thanks
    Jamie

          Having been contacted by the mods i have found out that the speed at the hub is around 36mb/s but that is not reaching any device not connected directly via ethernet to the hub.
     I performed some tests, for 3 of the main devices on my network. The results shown are an average of 3 consecutive test on speedtest.net and  Only the device being tested was connected to the hub at the time of the test.

      2 PC's are connected via ethernet over homeplug and are recieving low speeds. Depspite the house being only 2 years old so has new wiring  and the occasional peak in speed showing greater download rates are possible i think i am going to have to abandon them.
     The wireless connection desite having all g+ devices are also recieving low speeds, lower than on the previous hub before infinity so i do not think the hubs wireless is suitable either
     As BT say that thier responsibility only extends to getting speed to the hub not further my plan is to buy a wireless N router and connect it via direct ethernet to the hub then connect the PC's and laptop to the external router with wireless N adaptors. Any other devices such as phones/ non-N adaptors  would connect wirelessly to the hub.
     Does anybody know if this will work and have any recomendations on the routers?

  • Hard disk runs slow/beach balls since installing Leopard

    Hi,
    Since installing Leopard I've found any sustained disk use (copying files, extracting archives etc) incredibly slow, much slower than under 10.4. I've even done a clean install after a format, performed a disk verify and repair from the install boot CD and still no luck. It just seems that hard drive operations run frustratingly slow, and also cause general use of the system to momentarily hang.
    Has anybody else experienced this problem? I have a 24" iMac Core 2 Duo (not the aluminium new one) with 4gb of ram.
    best,
    andrew

    You may be able to repair this with the10.5.1 Combo Update
    (I usually don't recommend updating to fix an issue but this is the first combo update in 10.5)
    The combo update is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update (the one you get through SU) so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before. It has worked well for many.
    Remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions after update from /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.

  • Slow Burn Speed Since Updating to 5.0.1

    Has anyone else noticed a weird change in burning speeds since updating to 5.0.1? It seems to have doubled the length of time that it takes for an nour long CD to burn (around 6 minutes).

    I have just wasted eight CD's trying to burn a compilation. A message keeps coming up "Burn speed is too fast for the device or the media" and that I need to get into iTunes Preferences to adsjust the speed setting of burning. I've gone from52X down to 4X and APPARENTLY Mit's still too fast! This never happened before I updated to 5.0.1. I have no idea what's going on.

    Was wondering if anyone else has experienced a change in their burn speed since upgrading to iTunes 5.0.1

    hi Samuel!
    okay, we've got your CD diagnostics up, so skilled passers-by can comment. we'd better also work through some of the other usual suspects:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93360

    ... and if no joy with that, head here to check for other documentation and to submit your CD diagnostics to Apple:
    http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/windows/cddiagnostics/
    ... but we also had some success (case-by-case basis) with 4000-range errors in 4.x when we tried the MS troubleshooting documents:

  • Slow Speeds since Install. Mods??

    Any Mod brave enough to look into this one ????
    It's gotten to the point of me not trusting a thing Support say and they don't seem to listen to a word I say.
    I was told before signing up "Infinity will never slow down"
    "The speed we estimate for your line is the speed you will get"
    Since having Infinity Installed 04/04/2011, my speeds during the day are good at 35mb,
    but slows down every night, sometimes as low as 4mb.
    I reported this to BB support,explaining clearly that the connection is fine during the day,
    but seems to be suffering from congestion slowdowns in the evenings.
    I've been on the phone constantly since opening another fault report on 7th May.
    The first few days consisted of BB Support calling me back in the mornings (when the speed is fine),
    telling me they changed something and it should be ok now,
    followed by me phoning at night when the speed dropped again.
    This was escalated a couple of times to the "engineering dept.", still no change.
    I soon realised that if I said my speed was fine at the time they asked, nothing was being done.
    11th May.
    An engineer was booked for my home for the 12th 8am-1pm.
    I tell them this was probably a waste of time as the problem only appears at night,
    and the line is fine during the day.
    12th May.
    Engineer calls about noon,very friendly,I explain the problem and we have a nice chat,
    line check was good 40/10, no surprise there then.
    BB Support phoned me as soon as the engineer had booked off the job,
    basically telling me the fault had been fixed as an engineer had been out and found no fault.
    I argued that they couldn't say that as the slowdowns only happen at night.
    I point out to them I've been using speedtester.bt and ask them to look at the results, they totally ignored this.
    Back on phone that night. The vicious circle starts again, another couple of days of callbacks telling me they changed something, and me calling them at night.
    15th May.
    Escalated again,I'm told a higher level engineer would visit the exchange and then my home.
    16th May.
    The same friendly openreach engineer turns up at 9am, I just smile and tell him he knows where it is.
    No faults on the line and he explains he has nothing to do with the exchange.
    Callback from BB Support around 3pm asking if my speed was fine now.
    I had just finished another speedtest (7.3mb) so, no it wasn't.
    Another engineer appointment made for 17th
    17th May.
    No engineer. 2 callbacks, go over the same old story. Engineer booked for 18th.
    18th May. No engineer. callback that night,by now I know the script by heart. Engineer booked for 19th.
    19th May. No engineer. Another booking for 20th.
    20th May Engineer calls, we have a chat, I explain the problem, engineer leaves.
    By this time I feel sorry for these Openreach guys,sent out to jobs they can't possibly fix.
    They could be out connecting other people to this superfast connection that I'm not getting.
    Callback in the afternoon,was told the engineer had contacted BT Wholesale, but no further info was given. They asked how my speed was, I ask them to call tomorrow after I log the usual slowdowns with speedtester.

    Thanks for your post,  but I've already been through all your points above.
    I have taken continual speedtests since the install with speedtester.bt as well as others.
    The really slow period is usually from around 8pm till 11pm.
    The 3 results above are just from last night.
    I keep records of everything
    The problem is that nobody looks at the speedtester results.
    If they did, they could see exactly when this was happening and maybe take the proper action,
    and save me going over the same sad story when speaking to the Indian call centre.

    Forgot to add
    I asked BB Support to have my line monitored as this was happening during peak times,
    they totally ignored this suggestion.

  • Slow ADSL speed since power failure during trainin...

    Hi all,
    When our BT total broadband was installed, we had a power failure during the 10 day training period (back in June).
    At the start of the training period, we had a speed of 3936 kbps downstream:
    16:32:27, 28 Jun. ( 76.590000) DSL noise margin: 20.00 dB upstream, 6.00 dB downstream
    16:32:27, 28 Jun. ( 76.520000) DSL line rate: 448 Kbps upstream, 3936 Kbps downstream
    which was within the speeds we expected prior to installation (from the BT website for our phoneline):
    You can choose BT Broadband now offering:
    3Mb *
    Estimate download speed
    1.5Mb-5.5Mb
    Download speed range
    However, since the power failure during training (June 2013) we have never managed to get close to that speed, even after consecutive weeks of the HH4 being connected. Our current ADSL stats are pretty representative of what we have achieved ever since:
    DSL noise margin: 21.00 dB upstream, 6.10 dB downstream
    DSL line rate: 448 Kbps upstream, 1344 Kbps downstream
    The connection sometimes holds for weeks on end - other times it cuts out without any cause (from our end at least). For example, earlier today (after an uptime of 11680 mins):
    12:11:13, 27 Oct.
    (3862269.900000) DSL noise margin: 21.00 dB upstream, 6.10 dB downstream
    12:11:13, 27 Oct.
    (3862269.830000) DSL line rate: 448 Kbps upstream, 1344 Kbps downstream

    (3862239.140000) DSL is down after 11680 minutes uptime
    12:10:42, 27 Oct.
    (3862239.140000) ETHoA is down after 11680 minutes uptime

  • Really Slow Infinity Speeds.

    Had a problem with my line a couple of times were my connection kept dropping. the guys in indie suposedly fixed it twice but now that it has been sorted my internet speed has dropped from 30-40 mbps download and 10-12 up to 10-12 download and 0.6 upload.. why should i pay for bt infinity when im only getting ADSL speeds?

    Check to see if you may be suffering from star wiring.
    ~~~
    A fairly common form of miswiring is star wiring.  This is where extensions are taken off a junction box between the incoming telephone feed and the master socket.  These extensions may be regular telephone extensions, or may be SkyBoxes or alarms.  Those can cause serious issues.  It can be quite bad even if the extension isn't used, much worse if the extension is used.  If the extension is used, an old ADSL filter can make the issues marginally less bad.
    Star wiring was not a problem with regular telephones (often installed in GPO days), or even a significant problem with ADSL.  It wreaks havoc with VDSL/FTTC/Infinity.  It is often not noticed by installers.  I asked my installer about it because it seemed odd, and he explicitly said it didn't matter (eg, he coulnd't be bothered).  There seem to be lots of evidence that subcontractors are more likely to miss/ignore it than real Openreach staff (I can't remember who got mine wrong).
    This diagram may help.
  • MSI Z87-GD65 System. Slower Download speeds since upgrade.
    I've recently upgraded my PC to an MSI Z87-GD65/i5-4670K based system from an Core 2 Quad, Win 7 64x setup.
    I use Usenet frequently and since upgrading i seem to have lost around 1000KB/s in download speed when maxing out my line.
    Before, i used to get around 9140KB/s max download using the onboard lan port on a Gigabyte P45 based motherboard. Port on old board was a Realtek 8111C Gigabyte chip.
    Now i get around 8200KB/s max download using the onboard lan port on my MSI Z87-GD65 motherboard which is the Killer E2205 chip.
    I'm using the latest Lan drivers for my chip and have tried older ones but come up with the same result.
    Is there an obvious reason behind this speed loss? What i'm wondering is does Windows 8.1 constantly use the network to keep the app tiles updated and if so would it account for 1000KB/s of missing speed. If so, is there a way of stopping it using the network when I'm downloading stuff?
    I don't think the speed difference is due to the different chipsets because i get the same speeds using various speed tests that i did before. Also i know its not a massive amount of speed loss (it's equivalent to 8Mbps) but its annoying me.
    Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.
    Hi, thanks for your reply.
    My specs are as follows:-
    i5-4670k
    MSI Z87- GD65
    16gb Crucial Elite 1866 using X.M.P
    250GB Samsung 840 EVO SSD
    MSI GTX770 2GB
    Corsair HX850w PSU
    Windows 8.1 Pro
    I have no Wifi card or software installed so i'm just using the onboard ethernet.
    Current download speeds shown in Speedtest.net is 74 Down 19 Up, however the Usenet speed i'm getting is around 64 Down (8200KB/s). Difference of 10Mbps. Ive checked settings on the Usenet provider side and they are correct.
