Slow infinity speeds from PM till Am
Hi im new to these forums but i am at my wits end with the slow speed on bt infinity option 2 i have been getting around 80mb for the last few months since i joined however at around PM every day my speed is dropping as low as 700kbs i am now back to the days where i cant stram without it buffering or if 2 people in my house are on at the same time it means 1 will have to come off the net WHAT IS HAPPENING? I am wired by Ethernet into my hub into my infinity box.This has just been happening in the last month or so bt are supposed to be looking into it but they don't seem very quick at it i am roughly 75 yards if that to the exchange that i am connected to......no virus no malware no spyware even when the laptop goes in on the Ethernet its the same result(on my desktop ) no fault on the line however my next door neighbour and my friend across the street have the same problem(all with bt infinity) yet my othe friend on the street who is with sky (not fibre) is getting faster speeds than me and my neighbours i am paying £55 per month for a service that isn't working should i be able to get my bill reduced or the service fixed?failing that woul bt release me from my contract as they are not honouring their obligation to supply me with fibre speeds? and my ping omg normally 20 now 200ms or 300ms this is unacceptable as i am typing this my last speed test on the bt wholesale site is 2.3 mb its not just me bt its loads of people in different areas the problem is at your end CHECK YOUR FORUMS!!!! rant over what are they doing about this? and when is it going to be sorted?
mine is 79mbs dwnld 17 mbs upload 18 ms ping
after 4pm its 2 mbs dwnld 17 mbs upload and 200 ms ping
its fine during the day from between 6 am and 4 pm then really slow speeds either there is a big problem in mine and everyone elses exchange thats having this problem or bt have too many customers using the service or they cant provide the service or there is a huge huge bottleneck somwhere and us the customers are suffering please help sot this and please be aware that this is not just a local problem by looking at the other posts re bt infinity op2 slow speeds

Slower download speeds from Arch
Hello,
I am getting slower download speeds from Arch Linux than from my other distros. I have googled and applied the following "fixes" but they don't improve the download speed.
1. I shut off ipv6:
# /etc/modprobe.conf
alias net-pf-10 off
alias ipv6 off
2. I shut off ipv6 in firefox.
3. Here's my /etc/rc.conf:
DAEMONS=(syslog-ng iptables dhcpcd network netfs portmap ntp crond alsa gpm kdm cpufreq)
lo="lo 127.0.0.1"
eth0="dhcp"
INTERFACES=(lo eth0)
4. Here's Arch compared with Zenwalk:
Arch vs Zenwalk download and upload speeds by
http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/
Arch 17719 kbs down 2049 kbs up
Zenwalk 21537 kbs down 2779 kbs up
5. Ping tests are equal:
Arch: 64 bytes from 64.233.167.99: icmp_seq=1 ttl=242 time=41.2 ms
Zenwalk: 64 bytes from py-in-f99.google.com (64.233.167.99): icmp_seq=34
ttl=242 time=40.5 ms
6. I also tried a different browser, and tried stopping iptables.
Can anyone help?

Thank You,
I was just about to ask about kernel modules/drivers. forcedeth is the nic driver, I think. But i have no idea how to correct something that's compiled in. I will stay with what I have for now. until I learn somemore. I like Arch Linux and plan to stay with it.

Slow Infinity speed on Xbox, PS3 and Sky despite h...
I have recently switched from Sky to BT and have a BT Infinity 2 package. My computer is working well and achieves a very good speed - 76Mps down. I am delighted with this. However, despite all my devices being 'hard wired' via ethernet I am getting very slow dowload speeds on my xbox, ps3 and Sky HD box.
Sky Anytime + Takes over an hour to be ready to play an SD movie
Iplayer constantly buffers on PS3 and Xbox
A 56mb File on Xbox live takes 10+ minutes to download (dread to think how long a large file would take!)
I have tried swapping the ports and cables and have tried resetting the homehub. There are no faults on the line and I have had an engineer look at the installation.
I am now very frustrated as when I was with sky on an 8mb connection I had no problems at all with all my devices.
Does anyone out there have any ideas? I would be really grateful them as I am thinking of going back to what worked!
ThanksHi Welcome to the forums
Here are some help pages done by CL Keith http://forumhelp.dyndns.info/speed/adslmenu.html
also post your full hub stats by entering 192.168.1.254 into your web browser address bar and navigate to adsl or use a-z, if netgear enter 192.168.0.1
Can you also post the full results from BT Speedtest speedtester.bt.com
Have you tried connecting to the test socket at the rear of the master socket
Have you tried the quiet line test? - dial 17070 option 2 - should hear nothing - best done with a corded phone. if cordless phone you may hear a 'dull hum' which is normal

I had BT Infinity (option 2) installed May 1st 2012. After waiting 10 days for speed to settle down, I checked my speed yesterday & today with the bt speedtester & speedtest.net & results are showing as an average 16 download & 4.50 upload.
I did everything that BT advised via their 'How can i test my BT Infinity speed?' site ( checking connections, disabling anti-virus etc), as well as resetting the modem & hub, but results still showing average speed as mentioned above.
I have run a PC Healthcheck via 'BT broadband desktop help' on my PC which is only a few months old & is running a wired connection to the hub, but I still have these very low speeds.
Can anyone give me any advice?
ThanksHi
Hi Aarong,
My estimates are 28.3 download, 5.7 upload. See results above from latest speedtest. It looks like the max acheivable speed (20Mbps) is same as previous BB package, not Infinity, even though my online bill page shows service as 'up to 76Mbps'. -
[SOLVED] Slow read speeds from a DroboFS mounted in fstab via cifs
I've decided to move all my media over to my drobofs which I have and I've mounted the share on the drobo in fstab this way:
//mydrobofs/Media /media/drobofs cifs iocharset=utf8,uid=af,gid=users,guest,dir_mode=0775 0 0
The share is mounted fine at boot but my issue is now the read speeds are very slow. opening a video file with vlc takes 30 seconds or more before it starts playing. Before this was accessing the share on my drobofs via the network tab (samba shares) in Dolphin (using KDE4) and here the video files played immediately in vlc (no delay). The reason why I want to mount the share via cifs and fstab is to move music collection over to the my drobofs and since I'm using Amarok for managing my collection this is the only way to make Amarok see my Music collection on the Drobofs.
Why am I getting so slow read speeds with cifs?
Last edited by fettouhi (2012-05-07 05:54:00)I did some more testing and seems like the problem has something to do with how many video files there are in the directory. I have some directories with several 100 video files and here I get this long delay but if I play a file that is in a directory by itself or only a few other video files are there, then the video starts immediately (almost). Is there a way to turn off this behaviour in vlc? Is it generating a playlist or what?

Hi. New non geeky member in desperation. Signed up for Bt infinity base package in Nov 2013 and was quite pleased it. I hadnt checked my speed lately although had the impression it was getting slower.So been checking over the last few days at different times and download speed has been averaging out at about 4.8 Mbps. sent BT email and had a call from help centre last night to advise trying www.speedtest.wholesale.com which I have done at various times today. I checked on both my Desktop and Laptop using cable with wireless turned off and resuults were all about the same:-
4.92 Download
Max achievable 5.03
Accepable range 20Mbps-5.03Mbps
0.74 Upload
Upstream rate profile is 10
My computers are both up to recommended specs. I am using a BT homehub 5, about 1 Km from the BT exchange and 50 metres from the green cabinet.
Having said I am no geek I would appreciate some help I could understand please.Hi Ebrey

Has anyone experience their Airport slowing the download speeds?
You need to spell out the whole thing.

How are you measuring.. by wireless yes, you will experience some reduction.. maybe a lot depending on range of client and wireless type.. is this AC version or earlier airport? What is the link speed of the wireless.. and are multiple devices connected??
If this is purely ethernet, then something is wrong.. we need to know exactly what model airport you are talking about.. A1xxx from the side or base please?? -
Slow infinity speed since install.
Out of interest could people post there distance from cab VS. speed.
I had infinity option 2 installed about 3 weeks ago now. When the original open reach engineer installed the service he said that there was something not right with it, I was getting download speeds of 8 mb. He conducted internal house wiring and also tested the drop wire to the dp, same speed.
Long story short another openreach engineer has come out today and informed me that 8mb is the correct speed and that i wouldn't achieve any more. He didnt test the speed at the pole so I have asked them to do this to see what comes back but I would be interested to know what other people are getting at around 900-1000m from the cab.
i was orginally quoted 16.1mb i find it had to believe that half is correct...We're about 800m from the cabinet (I'd originally thought we were nearer to around 300-400m but google maps proved me wrong!)
I've just upgraded to Infinity 2 today and our download speeds have increased from around 37.5 Mbps to 42.5 Mbps.
I guess it all depends on the route the cable takes and the quality of the copper (our house is about 11 years old and so I'm guessing the BT lines are about the same age), but I would have thought you could achieve more than 8Mbps if we're getting over 40Mbps being only slightly closer to the cabinet than you. -
Slow Infinity Speed - Could this make the Guiness ...
I transferred from Virgin fibre to Infinity a couple of months ago - and performance has been acceptable considering the fact that I'm 5km from the exchange - 15 Mbps download 1.2 upload. However a few days ago it dropped to 7 Mbps and .15 (yes 0.15) A fault on the line was diagnosed - engineer worked hard to fix it - told me the line is good however I was getting 7Mbps and .15 - he said it may take some time to get back up to speed - when he left - 24 hours after the engineer's visit I am seeing no improvement. My mobile phone has a better upload speed
What is the best course of action ( apart from returning to Virgin!) Is the line likely to improve - do I go back to BT and report it again - I could cut my wrists but that would spoil the carpet
I've reset the modem and hub but there seems to be so much conflicting advice I'm not sure what to do. Advice would be gratefully acceptedIf I were you I would uninstall BT Desktop Help. It might not help your speed but it will help your computer. It is a pile of software junk that is not needed on your computer to connect to the Internet or for anything else and it can cause problems on some computers.
Use this as your speed checker and then run the diagnostics and post back the results along with your IP profile and somebody may be able to help.

Really Slow Infinity Speeds.
Had a problem with my line a couple of times were my connection kept dropping. the guys in indie suposedly fixed it twice but now that it has been sorted my internet speed has dropped from 30-40 mbps download and 10-12 up to 10-12 download and 0.6 upload.. why should i pay for bt infinity when im only getting ADSL speeds?
Check to see if you may be suffering from star wiring.
~~~
A fairly common form of miswiring is star wiring. This is where extensions are taken off a junction box between the incoming telephone feed and the master socket. These extensions may be regular telephone extensions, or may be SkyBoxes or alarms. Those can cause serious issues. It can be quite bad even if the extension isn't used, much worse if the extension is used. If the extension is used, an old ADSL filter can make the issues marginally less bad.
Star wiring was not a problem with regular telephones (often installed in GPO days), or even a significant problem with ADSL. It wreaks havoc with VDSL/FTTC/Infinity. It is often not noticed by installers. I asked my installer about it because it seemed odd, and he explicitly said it didn't matter (eg, he coulnd't be bothered). There seem to be lots of evidence that subcontractors are more likely to miss/ignore it than real Openreach staff (I can't remember who got mine wrong).
Ever worsening Infinity Speed from Exchange to Mod...
I had BT Infinity installed in the summer, in June and did regular speed tests which were getting me approx 15 - 16 MBPS DL and 2.5 MBPS uplioad, from the exchange to the modem
5 months later, I now get 7 MBPS DL and about 1 MBPS Upload
Thh BT speed check say I could get between 20 and 26 MPS - ive never believed that, and was happy with the 15-16 I was getting, but being down at 7 is pathetic.
Nothing has changed. Anyone any idea why?Ok - so an update to this:
i just received a call from BT, who told me that regarding my issue they have identified a fault in the exchange which is being worked on, and my normal service would be restored by 8 PM tomorrow. It wont require an engineer to visit my home (as expected).
When I then pushed her for info on what the fault was, she said there was some planned work going on in the exchange and it was affecting lots of other people as well. Im annoyed I didnt ask more questions abot precisely what she meant by "exchange" in the context she said it.
So clearly, she is just reading some generic notes from a helpdesk system and wouldnt be in possession of any particular info to my fault. I asked what would happen if the service wasnt restored by 8 PM, she just said it would be.
So, i wonder whether there is some deliberate work being done by BT to manage demand / capacity, and the speed was being kept lower than it could be during this planned work on purpose.
Either way im intrigued to see what happens tomorrow at 8PM. Im:
30 % expecting it to be fixed
50% expecting no change
20% expecting it to be worse
Bearing in mind they referred to planned work, I'll wait to see what happens then phone BT asking for a partial refund of the broadband part of my bill. Might get £5 i suppose! -
Very slow copy speeds from my USB thumb drive. Why?
I have an 8GB USB thumb drive. When I copy files to/from it to my Mac Pro (Early 2008 2.8Ghz), the transfer speeds are very slow. But when I use it with my 2009 Macbook, the speeds are fast. Why would it work faster with a low end Macbook than with a Mac Pro? I'm using one of the USB ports on the front of the Mac Pro.
Anyone have an idea?
Slow Infinity speeds - Profile problems
Hello All,
I have had the Infinity package since 6/7/2011 with speeds estimated at 34 mb/s. So far the maximum I have received is 10mb/s, and only on one PC for a short time, the average being about 4-5 mb/s.
On Saturday the 23/7/2011 I ran speed tests using http://speedtester.bt.com/, after disconnecting all but one device from the hub and was recieving about 10mbs, which was confirmed by BT over the phone. I was told that there was a problem with my profile and i was recieving the minimum speed and the profile was reset.
So far my service has not improved, ping and speed both fluctuating wildly with the maximum i have observed to be 7mb/s average about 4.
My phone has been getting a ping of 140 and speed around 200kps, before the reset ping was around 40 and speed 1-2 mps.
I know it has not yet been 10 days, but i have been paying for infinity for most of a month but recieving a service that is often inferior to the regular bt broadband and the profile reset does not seem to be working and several posts that i have seen say that it should only take 3-4 days for major improvement.
Should i wait until it has been 10 days or complain again?
Thanks
JamieHaving been contacted by the mods i have found out that the speed at the hub is around 36mb/s but that is not reaching any device not connected directly via ethernet to the hub.
I performed some tests, for 3 of the main devices on my network. The results shown are an average of 3 consecutive test on speedtest.net and Only the device being tested was connected to the hub at the time of the test.
2 PC's are connected via ethernet over homeplug and are recieving low speeds. Depspite the house being only 2 years old so has new wiring and the occasional peak in speed showing greater download rates are possible i think i am going to have to abandon them.
The wireless connection desite having all g+ devices are also recieving low speeds, lower than on the previous hub before infinity so i do not think the hubs wireless is suitable either
As BT say that thier responsibility only extends to getting speed to the hub not further my plan is to buy a wireless N router and connect it via direct ethernet to the hub then connect the PC's and laptop to the external router with wireless N adaptors. Any other devices such as phones/ non-N adaptors would connect wirelessly to the hub.
Does anybody know if this will work and have any recomendations on the routers?
I logged this with BT technical support on the 16th August and so far have received no callbacks when promised (current count of nonexistant callbacks is 8 ) and zero updates as to the possible cause of the fault or any plan to resolve it. I've been told that it is with the Networks, Investigation, Management and Wholesale teams but noone will actually tell me whats going on.
I'm posting this here and will contact one of the mods to see if theres anything they can do to help. Although if i'm honest I think I may be finished as a BT customer and will pay my way out of the contract and go elsewhere despite being 2 months into an 18 month contract.
Shocking service, amazing product (when it's working)I would give the Mods time to resolve the problem, meanwhile have a look (link removed) for your legal rights which would mean you would not have to pay to get out of your contract.
Sorry the link is incorrect. I'll get back with the correct one.
