Slow internet after Engineer visit

1 - BT engineer replaced the multiplex on our block of 4 houses today.
2 - My Hub is connecting at 7339 down , 910 up.
3 - Internet crawls along at 344 Kbps according to www.broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk
4 - BT speedtester fails to run with error message to try again later or contact ISP.
Is it something the engineer did or is BT having problems for a while ?

  • Slower speed after engineer visit

After losing my broadband connection last week an overreach engineer came out today and found that an ant infestation further down the road had disconnected the cables! My connection speed is now only 1mbs when previously it was 4.5. Should I expect to see thIs increase fairly quickly in the 10 day period or will it take a while?

BT Speed Test gives my connection speed as 1.2mbps and estimated speed as 3.5mbps (I was getting 4.5mbps before the engineer fixed the connection issue)
I am connected to a spur off the master which is about 4 meters away and when I have connected directly to the test port I get the same result.
I have also tried the quite line and hear nothing.
    Thanks :-)

  • Slow speed after engineer visit

I joined BT broadband from AOL. With aol I had an average speed of 2.5 meg, which is fine for me. Move to BT and since the arrival of the bt home hub have had a download speed of 0.000 . I am not kidding.
After 3 weeks get an engeneer out who yesterday fixed the problem, saying something about cables, and that the one thousand errors (not kidding again) had now been resolved.
Wake up this morning. Issue returns. It has taken me 20 minutes to load the BT web page. I have tried BT help, who after ordering me to restart my router...even when I protested..and seamed to preach about my distance from the exchange, I have given up phoning them for them not to understand I had an engeneer out yesterday and yesterday issue was resolved only to return again.

As you can see my router is getting speed...but I am getting pages and pages of packet errors. I know I have not been online that long..due to a stupid reset ordered from BT support... but yesterday the BT whole sale test had my speed at 3 meg... am now at the following
my speed now is the above, it varies from this then drops all the way down to 0.00.
I am using the test socket
    Filters are new
I only have one phone line
I do not have any devices causing any Rein on the premises
Phone line is used for nothing other than my broadband.
How do I get past dealing with the twenty same questions when I phone BT. The engeneer yesterday was here for three hours and said he would add a note on my file..but when I phone BT I get the usual 'do a speed test..reset your router...blah de blah you're some distance from the exchange...are you using wireless or wired.'

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Slow Internet after Lion Install

Lion installation was successful on a Mac Mini.  The only problem I have is a slower internet connection.
I am getting about 2 to 3 Mbps for download when it should be about 10 -12 Mbps.  On another Mac stil running on Snow Leopard I'm getting an excellent download speed.  I cannot see how this could relate to the Lion install, but after dealing with the modem, router and checking that other Macs have good internet access, I turned to this forum.
I am using a Cisco Valet plus router.  Lion was installed on a Mac Mini. 802.11g  The RSSI value is -70. Transmit rate is between 12 and 18.
    Any ideas?

    From the menu bar, select
     ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Network ▹ Advanced... ▹ DNS
Under DNS Servers you should have one or more numerical addresses, such as “192.168.1.1” or “10.0.0.1”. What are those addresses?

  • Very slow internet after installing 10.5.3

Hello all, this is the very first time I have encountered any problems with my Macbook and I am hoping I can get some help here.
About a month ago I came home from college and hooked my Macbook up to the wireless router at home, everything was running fine. We have fiber optic internet so usually my speeds are blazing fast. Recently however I installed the 10.5.3 update and now my internet speeds are very dismal. I am having trouble getting my Macbook to connect to the router at all, much less load any web pages.
I have taken an ethernet cable and plugged my Macbook directly in to the router to see if things load any faster, and unfortunately things are still just as slow over a wired connection. After typing in a URL you will sit there at a blank web page for about 45 seconds to a minute before it even starts loading the page, and when the page does load it takes forever to pull up and images take even longer to display. If it helps at all our router is a dlink DI-524 wireless router.
I was browsing through these forums yesterday to see if I could find a solution to my issue. so far I have tried the following:
-set router to broadcast in G mode only (instead of mixed mode)
    -removed encryption from router
-tried various encryption settings (64 bit WEP, 128 bit WEP, WPA, etc)
-updated the firmware of my router
-created test account on my macbook, opened internet browser on it, everything still runs slow
-deleted cache for safari/mozilla as well as the .plist files, still slow internet
when i called apple the agent suggested putting in my os X CD and do an archive and install, i did and once i was set back to os X 10.5 i was unable to connect to wifi at all, and wired connection over ethernet seemed just as slow as before. when i check for apple updates the 10.5.3 update was my only option, i couldnt choose 10.5.2 so installing that would put me back where i was before.
in the end i set my computer up last night to do a restore from my time machine backup. my machine has been restored to the backup i created just before i tried the archive and install, so im back to running OS X 10.5.3 now.
I'm sorry this post got so long, I just wanted to make sure that I included details of what I've done so far. Again I would like to stress that I am having this problem on my macbook even with my computer hooked directly to the router with my ethernet cable. (using that same cable and hooking up any one of my windows computers in the house results in fast and effortless web browsing so i know the cable is good)

It's not a matter of Mac OS X being "picky" but rather various ISPs not keeping up with changes in the DNS standard.
In the most recent case, 10.5.3 had to revert to a previous method of performing some DNS lookups because various ISPs hadn't bothered to update their servers to handle what has been the recommended way of handling lookups for the past eight years.
OpenDNS also has done a lot of work to make sure their DNS servers work as fast as possible; ISPs have absolutely no incentive whatsoever to provide fast DNS services.

  • Slow internet after mountain lion download

web pages open slowly or not at all after mountain lion download

I'm having the same problem but only at home with a slow internet service.  At work with faster internet my macbook pro works fine.  I wonder if Mountain Lion requires some minimum internet speed?  Our old macbook pro (not using Mountain Lion) still works fine with our slow home internet.  This change happened when I installed Mountain Lion.  Also I can boot from by back up disk and bypass Mountain Lion and work with my slow internet at home. ???

  • Slower internet after using Azureas?

I briefly used Azureas/Vuze for a week or two and now my internet seems to be slower, even after uninstalling it. Its not drastically slow but Youtube videos for example are taking a lot longer to load than before. Is there any chance that Azureas created the problem, or am I just getting paranoid......

Every time I use the Envy 100 (or to be precise: when the Envy has made a wireless connection) I lose internetconnectivity. But only after I end a session at my router (Linksys WRT610N). When I turn the router off and the next time on, It can't connect to my internetmodem (Linksys AM200) at all. Wifi is up, but I have only local access, apparently router can't establish a connection with my modem (which indicates both the cableconnection with the router as the internetconnection is up.
This happens only after sessions where I have used the Envy, otherwise everything is OK. During those sessions there is no problem, only after starting a new one. The only way to re-establish connection is to hard reset my router and reconfigure.
Btw. I am one of the Envy users who can't get a connection for the webapps, but has working ePrint - which is another thread on this forum. Not sure if both problems are or aren't connected.
    Any help, or pointers?
A FW update was released recently to resolve the issue with apps access...if you haven't received notification on the Envy of an available update, you should be able to go to your Envy display and select Settings (wrench icon)>Web>Product Updates>Check for product updates to get the most recent FW installed on your printer.
Regarding the other issue - routers aren't intended to be turned off/on constantly, but it should still connect to your modem reliably after restart.  Complete the FW update and see if the issue persists.  Also, can you share why you turn off the router regularly - there really is no need to do so.

  • I5 iMac slow internet after sleep

When waking from sleep my iMac has incredibly slow internet until I reboot it. Is this a known issue? If so, how do I fix it?

    Hello,
See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH7029
Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free Disk space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
In the Memory tab of Activity Monitor, are there a lot of Pageouts?
    Any external drives connected?
Have Console in Applications>Utilities  open & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.

Have you reset Safari? Yet?  Top left corner of the screen next to the apple logo click on the word Safari, then click reset safari, make sure everything is checked then click reset.  Also try:
Repair your permissions.  Go to applications then to the "other" folder then go to disk utility, on the left hand side you will see a white box.  Select the second option, usually called "mac HD" with that selected click on "repair permissions" in the center towards the bottom of the screen.  Wait for it to complete, then see if this fixes the issue.

    Good day,
I'd like to confirm a few things:
What action/activity are you performing in Acrobat when it crashes?
Is the crash consistent at the same point?
You stated in the subject '..after upgrading to 10.6.7'
What OS was on your iMac when you purchased it?
Was this problem occuring when using an earlier verion of 10.6.x?
Have you applied to font update Apple released to address some of the problems they introduced with 10.6.7?
Did you perform a clean install of Acrobat on your iMac after you purchased it or was the application transferred in some way?
I hope we can get this resolved for you!

  • Painfully slow internet after upgrading to Snow Leopard

hi all, i recently upgraded to Slow leopard.
My internet has soon become painfully slow, taking (literally) minutes to load pages. I have checked my modem & router, they seem to be fine as my iPhone & Vista laptop run perfectly on the same network.
does anybody know what this could be?

If you have not done so since upgrading to Snow Leopard, you should run Disk Utility and use +Repair Disk Permissions+.
Have you used Software Update to apply Apple's latest updates after upgrading to Snow Leopard. If there are updates, you should run it a second time to ensure there were no dependent updates.
As a test, you can create a new admin user account in System Preferences Accounts pane.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/8235.html
Log out and log in to the new account. Try the things that caused the problems. Is it fast in the new account, or is it the same? If it is fast, then the cause is likely to be in your normal user account. If it is the same, then the cause is likely to be with the overall system (the OS).
You can also try doing a Safe Mode startup
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455
This will do some maintenance during startup and also load only Apple's essential system extensions and processes. Any third party software you have installed will not automatically run. Check the performance while in safe mode, and if there is improvement, restart normally to see if the problem comes back or not.

  • Super slow internet after Sept security update for OS 10.4

I updated my computer last week with the Sept security update (for OS 10.4) and now my computer has come to a crawl when using the internet. My wife's PC still zips through the internet without problems. It's not the router causing the problem.

HOLY MOTHER$%&*$& SH*& and other various expletives. I have been pulling my hair out for a week trying to figure this out. I had advice to change my router security from WPA to WEP, turning off the Ipv6 configuration, you name it.. I tried it and this worked like a charm! My internet is blazing again! Come to think of it, could this be the reason that about a month ago I would go to trusted websites I have been using for years and when I would click on links it would redirect me to all kinds of various websites that had nothing to do with what I was looking for. It was to the point where when I would click on a link I would look at the bottom left of the window (firefox) and it would always start with the same IP and I could tell it was doing that redirection thing.
    Anyway, BDAqua.... THANK YOU!!!

  • Slow speeds even after BT Engineer visit, Whats ne...

We've always had really slow internet speeds, around 1.5mbs down 0.4mbs up. (From the BT speed tester)
After many conversations with the helpdesk, an Engineer was sent out today to try and solve our speed issue.
Various tests were carried out on the line, all reported back as a good quality line. S/N ratio was 96% etc.
We are located pretty close to the exchange and the engineer has said we should be getting alot more than what we are. He has tried a reset on the line but this hasnt improved anything.
Whats the next step? Do we contact the helpdesk again? Are there more advanced level of engineers, i.e. for exchange issues?
All of the standard checks have been done :-
    - using main socket only. (BT Openreach ADSL)
    - line test 17070 option 2, results in a very faint crackle but could be the handset
    - BT Home Hub 2, package is BT Broadband Option 3 (unlimited)
    - The exchange is Billingshurst and has ADSL Max enabled
    - The engineer has now installed a dedicated socket. (phone and internet on the socket). Previously we had tried two sepereate filters.
    - wired conection
    - Hub is left on 24/7
Our next door neighbour is on an identical package/setup to us and gets 3.7mb down on the speed test.
The engineer has just reset the line hence the time log being low. Currently measuring at 1.2mb down, so slightly lower than before.
The Noise margin was at 6.5db, the engineer reset this down to 6db and it has slowly krept to the figure below:-

From reading other posts our noise margin and line attention looks pretty good.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

ok there is certainly something restricting your connection speed as i posted earlier you should be connecting at 8mb with your current noise margin and attenuation
you say about a slight crackle there should be no noise heard on the could you try another handset

  • Cant download LION on slow internet. Starts over after disconnection.

Currently deployed to Africa with USAF. Hard drive crashed on old white macbook. Installed new drive and reinstalled original Snow Leopard. Fully updated all software.
Went to app store to download Lion. I can download approx 1 GB per day on slow internet. Each time my laptop is disconnected from the internet and I reconnect later, Lion starts its download from ZERO.
I "pause" it and it says "780mb downloaded" etc.... I come back the next day and it starts all over again from zero bytes.
    Help!
I wouldn,t care so much being stuck with Snow Leopard, except my personal USB drive is encrypted with Lion so I cant access it right now.
    -Bryan

Ok, after some more mucking about I have made some progress. By changing MTU to 100 I can get pages to load, albeit slowly. At least now I can post about this from my main box ;-).
I have noticed the following things:
    - With MTU 100 pages load, but my adsl broadband is about as slow as an old modem. I get about 1Kbps on ftp downloads. After ~200K the transfer stalls.
    - When using aMule i notice that my eth0 monitor (in superkaramba) indicates outward traffic of about 20 Kbps, eventhough aMule itself only indicates 5Kbps being transferred.
    - When I ping my router by doing "ping 192.168.0.1" I have about 10% packet loss. This does not happen on my laptop.
So, I'm stuck with the following questions:
    - Why does my internet grind to a halt when I use MTU>1000?
    - Why do my downloads halt after ~100K?
    - Where do I start looking for differences in my LAPTOP setup, which works fine, and my MAIN BOX, which does not?
