Slow internet connections with Mountain Lion

HughesNet, the satellite internet provider, has been installing its new, faster (10Mbps) service and has found that downstream speeds max out at around one Mbps only with OSX 10.8.2. All previous OSX versions and other OS's get the full 10Mbps speeds, but Mountain Lion does not. Apparently a Mac running Lion on the same home network as one with Mountain Lion will have 10x the downstream speed as the one with ML.
They are attempting to troubleshoot the problem and a technician says :
"We are continuing to investigate Mountain Lion's behavior. From the outside looking in, it is tough to diagnose somebody else's (Apple's) software. However, what we see is that for individual TCP connections, Mountain Lion stops sending ACK packets regularly, which causes pauses in downloads and overall reduced speeds. If you have multiple connections going at the same time, each is able to get about 1Mbps, so applications (or websites or speed tests) which use multiple connections are less affected.
There are a few kernel settings which can be adjusted on Mountain Lion which improve things, but not drastically. We are hesitant to publish those since they don't seem to address the underlying behavior of Apple's TCP stack - they just mask the symptoms by increasing some of the buffers."
Has anyone else experienced anything like this? Has Mountain Lion changed some fundamental behavior that could be causing this problem?

Apple Support does not participate in ASC nor do they read these threads.
An AirPort Extreme is not a panacea for the phenomenon you describe, and whatever the problem is, it is not common enough to draw any conclusions. The number of variables that affect a wireless network is so large that a solution to your complaint from Apple Support will be elusive. Read this for one example: New Panasonic blueray player won't connect to my network if my iMac is running. Crazy things like that can drive you up a wall.
All I have to suggest is to break down your network to the simplest possible arrangement. "Hard reset" your Extreme or other router and configure it anew. Confirm one client works reliably and if it doesn't, fix it. Add a different client to the network and repeat. If you are fortunate you will find that adding device #3 (for example) breaks everything, and you will be one step closer to solving the problem.
Having an AirPort Extreme is convenient for participants here, since it reduces the number of unknowns. Third party routers just introduce an element of uncertainty and complicate troubleshooting.

  • My 2007 mac pro has a slow internet connection with lion

    Hi:
I've been dealing with a severely slow internet connection with my 2007 mac pro - dual quad core.  I have os 10.7.3.  I use wifi.
Typically, I'll experience difficulty loading websites completely.  Certain sites have a 90% failure rate to load most elements.  Other sites operate quickly from time to time.  Often, a site will simply fail to load at all.  My cable company cannot find anything wrong with my connection and other, newer devices don't have a problem loading sites.  It seems the issue is most likely related to my computer.
Interestingly, I can usually "jump-start" the connection by turning my wifi connection off and on and this will (temporarily) allow me to get an image or video to download.
    Any ideas?
    Thank you for your time.

In case of lost internet connection during mountain lion download from app store, do i have to start over?

How do I speed this up.  I have a fast internet connection but this is obviously not right.
The speed of the downlaod is dependant on the speed of your Internet connection. "I have a fast Internet connection...," doesn't actually mean anything unless you provide some numbers.
I have a cable Internet connection with 32 Mbps download speeds, but if you have DSL, you would probably be limited to 1.5 Mbps. Some would call both of these connections "fast," but obviously one is faster than the other.
What is the speed of your Internet connection?? Don't say, "fast."
    Test it here: http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest?flash=1

  • Slow shut down with mountain lion 10.08.02

slow shut down with mountain lion 10.08.02
I purchased the ML 10.08.02, two days ago, and installed over Lion 10.06..., on my Mac Book Air 11', the shut down that with Lion was around 3 sec is actually long around 20 sec.
    What to do ?
    Thanks

Update.  My slow shut down came back! And got fixed again.  But Im not sure what happened to fix it.  I did call apple and they had me reset my pram and do an smc reset.  That didn't change anything.  About an hour later, the problem went away.  I have no idea what fixed it for me.  But everything is running faster, opening quicker and my macbook is closing almost instantaneously.  I have an internal SSD so it is fast to begin with.  But I would say that with mountain lion, all of my applications are working faster.  I use final cut pro x, so I use software that is very cpu demanding.  This is the best OSX  I personally have ever used.  Wish I could figure out what actually fixed this problem for me.  If I can, I will post it here.  For now everything is better than before I upgraded to Mountain Lion!

  • Slow internet connection with gigabit ethernet?

I have a 1Gbps (1000Mbps) internet connection from my ISP, using the internet speed testing service provided by local authorities, my internet download speed is shown to be at least 250Mbps (close to the max limit of the test) when my iMac directly connected to my wall ethernet socket.
However, when Mac is connected to the internet through my 2012 Time Capsule (all ethernet and time machine disabled), my internet download speed is slowed to 96-98Mbps.
I understand that all ethernet ports on the 2012 spec Time Capsule is gigabit ethernet, and I have checked my connection using the network utilities, which confirms that my linkspeed is 1Gbps.  The hardware tab on my Network preferences also shows that my ethernet is set to 1--base T, full-duplex.
So where did the 60% speed decrease come from?   Is this ~96-98Mbps speed limit a hardware limitation? Or is my time capsule set up incorrectly?
I understand that similar questions might have been posted in the forum before, but I haven't b thread with the exact issue I described above.   Any help would be appreciated.

Many thanks for your incredibly detailed reply.  All the information in your solution is correct, and while it did not directly solve my problem, it would have taken my a lot longer to figure out the issue without the information you provided.
I didn't realize we're missing so many functions in airport utility 6.0.
Anyways, upon reading your advice, I installed Airport utility 5.6 on mountain lion and checked the link speed settings.    Apparently it was automatically set to 100Mbps when connected to my cable modem.
Strangely, if I manually change the link speed to 1000Mbps full duplex, Time Capsule would report an "ethernet unplugged" error along with the consequential "internet connections" and "no DNS servers" error.   Since my ISP has been supporting consumer 1Gbps internet for a few years now, and since I am able to get an over-100Mbps actual link speed with directly connection to my cable modem, I am certain that my cable modem connection supports 1000Mbps local connections.

You're also correct in that Time Capsule does not have a settings for "half duplex" for 1000Mbps link speed.  But hooking my my mac directly with my cable modem, Mac network preference pane reports that the 1000Mbps connection between my mac and cable modem is full duplex, so my ISP does allow full duplex 1000Mbps connection.
After NUMEROUS tests, I discovered the problem is down to a FAULTY ETHERNET CABLE, which I did not use for my Mac -> cable modem direct connection.  This was why I was able to get gigabit ethernet speed with a direct connection but not through time capsule!
I replaced the faulty cable with a new cat-6 ethernet cable and voila! problem solved!
So here're the test results (using an more up-to-date speed test) before and after I replaced the faulty lan cable:-
(while I'm at it, I've also thrown in some additional results demoing the wired and wireless throughput of the 4th gen Time Capsule)
    Faulty cable through Time Capsule:-
    New ethernet cable direct connection:-
    Wired connection through Time Capsule:-
Wireless Connection (wireless-n 5GHz three streem 450Mbps transmit rate) through Time Capsule:-
I'm a bit surprised that a damaged cable resulted in a lower link speed rather than no connection at all.
Also, while the throughput of Time Capsule can't really match the link speed of the direct connection, I'd say it's not shabby at all.
Thanks again LaPastenague for your solutions.

  • Loosing internet connection after Mountain Lion update

    Hi,
    I'm working with a MBP 2012 model.
After the update to Mountain Lion, the MBP is loosing the internet connection now and then.
I've did a PRAM reset, but the issue is still present.
Are there any tips oder way to solve the issue?
    Thank so far

I'm having the same problem on my brand new 2012 Macbook Pro with Mountain Loin. After being online for a while, Safari or Chrome will just stop connecting to the interent, even though everything says it's connected. I don't have this problem with other computers on the same network that are not upgraded to Mountain Lion yet.
If I restart the computer, it works again for a while.
    Very frustrating.

  • Epson 3880 printer doesn't connect with mountain lion

My Epson 3880 printer is connected to my Macbook Pro running Mountain Lion with a USB cable.  Since changing to Mountain Lion, I have been unable to print.  I've replaced the driver on the original software disc with the current driver shown on the Epson website with no improvement.  The message I get tells me that the printer is "not communicating" with the Macbook.  Any thoughts on how to fix this would be great.

Try deleting the /Library/Printers/Epson and /Library/Caches/Epson folders, resetting the printing system in Print & Scan prefs, then installing the printers from here: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1398.
    Hope this helps

  • Slow internet connection with a Mac

Im in the Philippines using Globe 1mb/s internet service. It is a hard line connection to a Tatoo router. It is only running at about 107kb/s yet, when the tech's attach a PC computer, it runs at 850kb/s. What is the problem?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Mac App Store applications don't need an installer. In the case of iLife applications, you can just transfer the iPhoto, iMovie or GarageBand application to another Mac by transferring the application from the Applications folder, and you will get the applications updated on your Mac.
If you haven't got another Mac with a fast Internet connection, you can only download the iLife applications with the slow connection

  • Ultra slow internet connection with Maverick

After having installed Maverick my IMac 27 reduces The speed of my internet connection from 6 Mbs to 0.02 Mbs.
Who I shuttle down IMac  The connection for my IPad and Iphone works fine.
How can I fix The problem?

Have you looked into Activity Monitor to see how the system resources are allocated, what they are, and then determine if they're enough to adequately run Mavericks OS X 10.9.x?
You may have to go into the Network preferences and double-check them, perhaps reset the base station and set up a new connection. Maybe a new Location, to test the settings, so you don't lose the older settings.
Here is a link to check general slowness in Mavericks...
•OS X Mavericks: if your Mac runs slowly
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH13895
There are a few other things that may cause an upgraded OS X to run slower in the computer than a previous one more closely designed for an older computer, but the hardware upgrade is a place to look first.
{PS: not certain what you meant by the reference to other internet devices.
A shared connection could slow them all down, but not by that much. They
all share the same base station, so the issue would be in Mavericks settings.
    Or in the general system to include possible items noted in the link above.}
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Slow internet connection with wrt56g ver. 4

My internet connection at school is fast as long as I have my computer plugged directly into the wall port.  If i plug the router into the wall and then my computer or Xbox into the router,  I can barely get a connection.  I disabled the wireless broadcast, but that doesn't seem to help. any thoughts?

Connect the computer directly to router …..Open routers set up page using http://192.168.1.1 ….you will get username & password screen …leave username blank & under password use admin.
Click on status tab …check firmware version & try to upgrade the firmware.

  • Very Slow internet connection with WRT150-N Wireless Router

I have a WRT150-N wireless router hooked up downstairs to the modem and I am upstairs right now with internet that is very slow, it shows it is 18 megabytes/second and the connection says poor (i have a wireless G card in this computer).  I have another computer that is about 10 feet away from the router with a wireless N card and it says that the connection is 160 megabytes/second, but again it is running very very slow.  The third computer is back upstairs by this one and it has a Wireless N USB adapter and is running about 170 megabytes per second.  They are all about the same speed in opening websites but again are very slow to do so.  Any ideas on what is going on or how I can get it faster?

First of all, the speeds you are quoting all sound like Mbps (megabits per second) connection speeds, not data throughput speeds.  You really need to measure your actual download speed to tell what is actually going on with your system.
Use speedtest.net and test your system.  Turn off all other computers except the test computer.  Test under the following conditions:
    1)  connect one computer, by wire, directly to your modem
    2)  connect the same computer, by wire, directly to your router
    3)  connect the same computer wireless to your router
    4)  connect your other computers, wirelessly to the router, one at a time
Also, state the speed that you are paying your ISP for.
Report your download and upload speeds for all of the above tests.
Note that the speed that you are paying for should be about the same as your results from test 1 and 2 above.
After you have done these tests, it will be much easier to tell where the problem is.

  • Experiencing Slow Internet Connections with new Macbook Pro

I have had the laptop since December and I have had several problems regarding the internet. Just a little background, I have always had pretty fast internet and have never experienced any of these problems with any other computers. My family owns 2 other PC's(ew) and they don't have any problems with internet speed.
    Examples:
-90% of the time my arrow will not change to the hand when something is clickable
-downloading songs takes forever, even when they are only 10 megabytes
-pages wont load even simple ones such as search engines
The overall feel of my connection is slow and the sites i use are the basic ones which dont require too many flashy things.
When I reset my modem the internet works better for a little bit but then goes back to its old ways.
If you guys could give me any tips on the preferences i should have please help

How are you connected to the internet?
How large is your hard drive and how much hard drive space do you have left?
Solution may be found if you search in the "More Like This" section over in the right column.

  • Super slow internet connection with time capsule.

Time Capsule wireless internate speed is insanely slow its super anoying, i have 15mb from comcast, and speedtest its scoring under 3.5mb down and 0.06mb up with a ping of 1025ms yees 1025ms this is unacceptable its almost impossible to use the internet please i need some help.

How can I get my time capsule to work like it used to?
Your TC is too old.. the power supply is on the edge of dying. The hard disk is probably also on its last legs..
The wireless card itself might be nearing EOL.. it is now 4years old.. or a bit more.. most stuff now is really not made to last more than 3years.. and the early TC tended to die in droves at 2years.
If you are prepared for some DIY.. you can fix it.
    https://sites.google.com/site/lapastenague/a-deconstruction-of-routers-and-modem s/apple-time-capsule-repair/repair-type3
I have several suggestions. At various prices and difficulty.
I would replace the hard drive.. it is out of warranty and has run in a super hot environment that is outside its spec.. and still it refused to die.. at the very least run a full pass erase from the disk utility, and see if error come up or the drive is slow. It might be weak read areas of the drive.
Frankly .. unless you like the challenge, it is simply time for a new one.

  • Slow internet connection with time capsule

The only way to have the real speed is in bridge mode, do anyone has a solution?

    Hi all,
first of all please forgive my English but I'm sure you'll understand the below.
I bought a time capsule 3T recently and after 2-3 weeks I faced the same above problems with internet speed.
Everything was perfect in the beginning but twoo weeks later I couldn't browse the youtube site so imagine to watch a video.
    The setup is:
ISDN modem>speedtouch adsl router> via ethernet timecapsule-bridge mode.
To the home network of timecapsule are connected one imac one macbook pro.
Since there were two wireless networks, the speedtouch and time capsule,
I decided to choose the speedtouch network for iphone and ipad.
After the problem with internet speed appeared for the imac and macbook,
I checked the connection through ipad and iphone and was perfect and very fast.
I was confused and I read all threads about the same problem.
So I decided to join the speedtouch network for imac too and to change network-to timecapsule-
whenever I need to backup to the timecapsule.
I was surprised to see that imac connected to timecapsule, without have joined its network
and also it was possible to enter timemachine without changing the already joined network
    of speedtouch router.
I think that the connection is possible because timecapsule is connected via ethernet cable to the
speedtouch so the connection is something like "dublex" or "bidirectional" (I don't know how to write it)
Now the problem has been fixed, timemachine works perfect and the internet speed is fast
    as before.
I hope this helps and let us know if will work for you.
    cheers,
