Slow Internet Even After Re-Install of OS X

I'm new to Mac and I was a first-time buyer in August when I got my Macbook. Within the last couple weeks my internet slowed dramatically, whereas my mom's laptop (three or four years old, HP) was still getting good speed. I read up on all the forums and it seemed that the people who had the same problem attributed it to their 10.4.10 update. I have Comcast high speed, and a Netgear router. I already checked the modem and router, and I tried a lot of the solutions listed on other forums, including an archive+install. That didn't do anything so I backed up all my stuff and completely re-installed Tiger, hoping it'd work. So I've spent hours doing this, and backing up things on my flash drive and iPod and everything, and I come online and I've still got that totally peculiar delay in pages loading. My download speed has ranged from 20 kb/s to 180 kb/s, so I can't understand why it's still doing this, especially after a complete re-install. It doesn't do it in my mom's laptop, and not even in my old, almost-dead dell laptop.
I refrained from downloading any of the software updates it presented me with after I re-installed at 10.4.9, because I didn't want to ruin any of the hard work I did. Apparently, the hard work I did was completely in vain.
I would really appreciate help on this, and I can try to give any other information I haven't provided yet.
I haven't done the update for the airport card or a few other updates, so if someone thinks it's all right for me to do that - or even beneficial - please let me know.
My Mac's info:
Model Identifier: MacBook2,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache (per processor): 4 MB
Memory: 1 GB

Oh, no! I didn't mean to post it in the iBook section, I'm sorry! D: I'm totally new to the forums thing, I'm really, really sorry.

  • SLOW and SLUGGISH after clean install PLEASE HELP!

My Macbook Pro started acting slugggish a few nights ago, and it seemed after a reboot that it ran better, but quickly slowed down.  I ran permissions, disk repair, reset the PRAM the SMC and etc... nothing helped.  I tried to do a Time Machine restore and after 10 hours of SLOW restoration (it still had 70 hours left) i decided to do a CLEAN INSTAL of Yosemite 10.10.
Same thing, takes over 10 minutes to boot up and i click on something and the beach ball will spin for a minute.
Disk Utility says everything is OK.... but even the internet is sluggish as if the entire machine is not processing the information fast enough.
ANY HELP is greatly appreciated as this is on day 4.
    Thanks
    Steve

CLEAN INSTALL took over 8 hours to complete, as if everything is running in slow mode.
Also, i ran this app as i see most ask for it.

  • I have very slow internet even though my provider says the speed is fast

I am experiencing very slow internet even though my provider says that my speed is fast.  The uploading of a page takes long to complete

If Safari is getting very slow:
(Presumably you regularly empty your Safari cache by deleting the following file:
    Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/cache.db
    and clear your History)
Adding Open DNS codes to your Network Preferences, should give good results in terms of speed-up as well as added security, (including anti-phishing and redirects) (Full information about Open DNS is here: http://www.opendns.com/home/nobloat ) and further independent information can be read here:
    http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-57338784-263/free-dnscrypt-tool-enhances-ma c-web-security/?tag=mncol;txt
    and here:
    http://www.macworld.com/article/1146064/troubleshootdns.html?t=234
If you are using a single computer: Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu, and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' add the following two numbers:
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
(You can also enter them if you click on Advanced and then DNS)
Sometimes reversing the order of the DNS numbers can be beneficial in cases where there is a long delay before web pages start to load, and then suddenly load at normal speed:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2296
If your computer is part of a network:please refer to this page: http://www.opendns.com/start/best_practices/#your_network and follow the advice given.
If you use a Router, make sure it has the latest firmware installed.
One reason for a slowness in page loading may be the 'DNS Pre-fetching' feature of Safari 5.x as is described here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3408?viewlocale=en_US
You can cancel DNS pre-fetching by going to Terminal and typing:
defaults write com.apple.safari WebKitDNSPrefetchingEnabled -boolean false
You have to restart Safari for it to take effect.
If Safari seems to hang for ages:
If you have a lot of tabs open and/or a lot of pages running Flash, Safari can sometimes 'hang', requiring a restart of Safari. This can often be inconvenient, and as it is rarely Safari itself that is hanging but merely one of its plug-ins, usually Flash, there is a way using Terminal to restart the plug-ins (without restarting Safari and losing your tabs) by quitting the WebPluginHost process:
Open the Terminal from the Utilities folder in /Applications and type
    killall -9 WebKitPluginHost
Note that this command kills all Safari plug-ins, not just Flash. All plug-ins should start back up when you reload the page.
Then go back to Safari and refresh any pages that were using the Flash plug-in. This also fixes the Beachball of Death. Try this whenever Safari gets slow or freezes. The later versions of Flash 10.1 onwards appear to have improved the situation somewhat, but haven't completed eliminated it.
For this and other reasons Apple switched their websites to HTML5 in January 2011:

  • Can't open itunes,even after un-installing and then re-installing!

I keep getting the following error message when trying to open itunes on my pc.
'The folder "itunes" cannot be found or created, and is required. The default location for this folder is inside the "my music" folder.'
This error message appeared even after un-installing and re-installing itunes.
I conducted a search for the 'my music' folder, and it came up with nothing.
    Please help!

If you truly don't have a folder named C/......./My Music, there are bigger problems with that PC.
That folder is a default windows XP folder and should be there.
The file extensions setting is easy to change. Win Explorer > Tools > Folder options
    http://www.fileinfo.com/help/windows-show-extensions.html
If your music folder really doesn't exist, see if you can do the shift-start and CREATE a new library. It will be blank, but at least that will tell us if itunes can even start. It will NOT run without an ITL library file.

i am not getting internet even after connecting to wifi. this occured after i tried to connect my i pad mini to a public wifi. i dont know weather it is a coincidence. any solutions??

My problem is solved. Actually i visited the apple autherised service centre. They told it may be because there was too many programs open in the background.the solution was
    1. Swipe up with four or five fingers to multitasking and then close them one by one by swiping up with a single finger
2.Reseting the i pad by pressing the sleep and home button simultaneously
the problem was solved on restarting

    Hello,
'''Try Firefox Safe Mode''' to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
''(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)''
    * You can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the '''Shift''' key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
    * Or open the Help menu and click on the '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' menu item while Firefox is running.
''Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"''
'''''If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode''''', your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] article for that.
''To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.''
''When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.''
    Thank you.

  • Wired internet doesn't work, even after fresh install?

So i'm fairly new to the linux stuff, but for some reason I cannot get my wired internet (eth0) to work. Bear with me because I've got a decent tale to give to fill you in:
After successfully installing archlinux for the first time, I was able to get the internet and everything working, but my boot manager was messed up. So I got a friend to fix that problem for me and I started updating my system through pacman. After successfully updating and changing the pacman mirror files I started downloading/installing gnome (and gnome-extra). I left it overnight and when I woke up in the morning all hell broke loose. After rebooting my computer and logging back into arch I found a number of my bash commands no longer worked (ifconfig, iwconfig, halt, shudown, reboot, dhcpcd, just to name a few I remember) so I had to manually turn off my labtop. At that point I decided to reinstall linux.
After reinstalling linux my network troubles began and from that point on I can no longer connect to the pacman servers and my eth0 times out upon booting into linux every time (for those of you wondering, yes I did change in rc.conf the eth0="dhcp" like I was supposed to). I get a transient failure or something of the likes. The wierdest thing is this:
When trying to reinstall linux using the ftp install I can configure my network (step 0), but when I get to trying to connect to a server and downloading the packages I fail to connect to the servers! Can someone please tell me what is going on?
Just for a few more backgrounds, I am installing arch64 on an intel core-duo processor with it dual-booting with windows vista ultimate. I don't think any of this is the problem considering I had it working once up a time, but now for some reason it doesn't work so i'm hoping for my wiser archlinux users to help me out.
EDIT: In a new turn of developments it seems my wired connection is now malfunctioning. Although just 5 hours ago at a friends house (when I was still having linux network problems) it worked just fine. My network card is a Intel(r) PRO/1000 PL card. Can my linux half screw up my windows half ethernet card and vice versa?
Just tried to uninstall and then reinstall my ethernet card and my wired connection still doesn't work. Any suggestions?

Well after many hours of toil, it seems that it has now decided to work. Still have no clue why my wired connection failed for that duration of time, but whatever. Archlinux is installed and running fine so I suppose all ends well.

  • Can't open any windows in Safari even after re-install

I can't open any windows in Safari, even after installing Snow Leopard, not even the "About Safari" info window. I'm using Firefox to get online. I can open the program itself, but can't do anything else. I'm suspicious that it may be a virus, because I'm getting some weird messages on restart, such as asking me if I want to use some wireless network I never heard of, and if I want to give somebody access to my Twitter account - very strange. My son was using a website when this happened.
    Message was edited by: Alba17

    Greetings,
I'm suspicious that it may be a virus
Not possible, since there are no viruses for Mac OS X. You should ask your son what site he was one and whether or not he downloaded and installed anything. And you should turn off wireless networking and delete any networks that you didn't specifically setup. Use Ethernet to connect to your modem/router for Internet access.
Are you sure that Twitter is asking to give somebody access to your account, or just authorize them to follow your tweets? I've never seen Twitter do the former for anyone, ever.

  • Major crashes even after clean install.  iCal/sqlite/MobileMe the culprit?

In 25 years of using Apple computers, I've never had problems like I'm having now.
My iMac was acting up severely with some strange symptoms such as:
    * The red & white portion of the iCal icon in the dock disappearing, while the date itself remained visible.
    * All kinds of 0K sqlite files showing up on the base level of the hard drive, and a lots of cfx pref files being generated (stuff like cfx#1t9Oiul -- these i understand to be corrupt pref files). The sqlite files, by the way, show up as things like etilqs_3HVA6IL9BWQtB9e
    * Freezes, generally slow behavior, and multiple crashes, including the "blue screen of death" where the color just shifts and the cursor comes and goes. Eventually, even after running DiskWarrior, I the computer would start up, then spontaneously shut itself down after the grey apple screen with the progress wheel.
Ultimately, I decided to just wipe the thing clean and start fresh from a backup.
Using a Leopard install disk, I attempted to do the clean install, but was unable to from the iMac's internal optical drive - the installer told me the disk was damaged or dirty (the optical drive is brand new, by the way).
Using a powerbook and putting the iMac in target mode, I was able to do a completely clean install.
I ran all the software updates and have added NO third party software.
    Problems are back:
Running a sync to get my calendar, contacts, and bookmarks back, I encountered my first problem again: address book wouldn't sync "due to inconsistent data" and told me to replace the data on the computer by resetting it -- which I attempted to do, multiple times, but the sync always failed.
Then , once again those sqlite files started showing up.
Then the iCal icon disappeared again and programs weren't responding. Moments ago I had to do a hard restart.
I've zapped the PRAM, I've tried everything I know, and I'm still having all these problems (some of which, by the way, are now beginning to occur on the PowerBook G4 I also have).
If anyone can provide me any guidance here, man would I love it. Is it possible the Leopard disk I have is somehow corrupted and is causing all these issues? Or is it hardware? Or is this some sort of problem that's being generated by synchronization?
I'm really at my wit's end.
Thanks to anyone who can give me a hand.
    Jon

Just wanted to update anyone who's interested:
After replacing the internal hard drive, all problems have ceased and my Mac is running beautifully -- fast (though I also upgraded the ram from 1 to 2 GB) and I couldn't be happier.
So just a word to the wise: those "software" problems I was so certain I was having turned out to be a hard drive that was slowly failing. A friend of mine who's a programmer said he's never heard of a hard drive failing anything but suddenly, but in this case that's what happened.
With the problems I was having, I was seriously beginning to question my loyalty to Apple.
As it turns out, now I'm questioning their loyalty to Western Digital -- that drive was a dog and I'm glad to have replaced it with a Seagate.

  • Slow Internet Speed after Leopard

I'm having a funny problem since the installation of Leopard and that is very slow internet browsing speed. But its not as simple as it sounds. I have another Windows PC on the same network; when its on mac internet speed is slow, when Windows PC is off the Mac internet speed if fast and normal.
I'm not alone in this problem. I read similar problems on Apple Gazette after installing Leopard. Any suggestions?

Had to search for it. I'm having the same problem as you see by my post in this forum. I hope this works for me. I also happen to be in South Carolina. Small world.

  • Slow speeds even after BT Engineer visit, Whats ne...

We've always had really slow internet speeds, around 1.5mbs down 0.4mbs up. (From the BT speed tester)
After many conversations with the helpdesk, an Engineer was sent out today to try and solve our speed issue.
Various tests were carried out on the line, all reported back as a good quality line. S/N ratio was 96% etc.
We are located pretty close to the exchange and the engineer has said we should be getting alot more than what we are. He has tried a reset on the line but this hasnt improved anything.
Whats the next step? Do we contact the helpdesk again? Are there more advanced level of engineers, i.e. for exchange issues?
All of the standard checks have been done :-
    - using main socket only. (BT Openreach ADSL)
    - line test 17070 option 2, results in a very faint crackle but could be the handset
    - BT Home Hub 2, package is BT Broadband Option 3 (unlimited)
    - The exchange is Billingshurst and has ADSL Max enabled
    - The engineer has now installed a dedicated socket. (phone and internet on the socket). Previously we had tried two sepereate filters.
    - wired conection
    - Hub is left on 24/7
Our next door neighbour is on an identical package/setup to us and gets 3.7mb down on the speed test.
The engineer has just reset the line hence the time log being low. Currently measuring at 1.2mb down, so slightly lower than before.
The Noise margin was at 6.5db, the engineer reset this down to 6db and it has slowly krept to the figure below:-

    Whats the next step?
Do we have to wait 5 days again, to see if the reset this time makes a difference?
From reading other posts our noise margin and line attention looks pretty good.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

ok there is certainly something restricting your connection speed as i posted earlier you should be connecting at 8mb with your current noise margin and attenuation
you say about a slight crackle there should be no noise heard on the could you try another handset
