Slow Internet on Mac and not PC

A couple of days ago, my Mac started downloading Internet web sites much slower than normal. What took a couple of seconds (DSL connection) is now taking 10—15 or more. I have tried it wireless and wired. I get the same result. Even Itunes is extremely slow!
At first, it was on my Mac and my husband's PC. We rebooted the modem and restarted our computers. My husband's PC is zooming along. My Mac is still slowly downloading pages. I have rebooted my computer and DSL modem several times.
I also downloaded the latest edition of my browser, Firefox. I tried loading pages on Safari. Slow, slow, slow. Even launching the browsers is slow. All other applications are loading just fine and in a short amount of time (5 seconds or less). I have also cleared out my Firefox cache.
Just a few minutes ago I updated my security packages. That didn't help. I also verified and repaired my hard drive permissions.
Any ideas? Help! Thanks!

The musigal,
I would go to your System Preferences -> Network -> Built in Ethernet (Show: Network Status must be selected) and under TCP/IP click renew DHCP lease if you are using a dynamic address. Next write down the DNS Server information there (if any) and then delete it. You will need to do this for Airport as well. Reboot and try your internet connection.
If you still are having issues, check the results of the command "ipconfig /all" on the PC in command prompt and compare the "default gateway" and "DNS Server" to the "Router" and "DNS Servers" in System Preferences -> Network -> Built in Ethernet.
If you get it fixed you can further speed up Safari by using the command in Terminal.app First quit Safari and Mail:
sudo defaults write com.apple.Safari WebKitInitialTimedLayoutDelay -float 0.25
and further speed up Mail.app if you are using POP not .Mac mail:
cd ~/Library/Mail
sqlite3 Envelope\ Index
vacuum subjects;
ctrl D (to end)

  • Slow internet on Mac but not on PC

I've had my mac for about a year and also have a Dell desktop and a Dell laptop. I have DSL with a Linksys wireless router. My mac is an OS x 10.5.8 and I don't have antivirus software on it. I am still very new to the mac and don't know much about it.
We just had a new modem installed and our speed increased and my mac is very slow to connect to pages, but my Dell desktop and laptop are way faster. Did a speed test and download speed is 539 kb and upload speed is 389 kb.
What can I do to speed it up? Is a virus possible? Does my machine need regular maintenance like cleaning files or something? Wish I knew as much about my mac as I do my pc.

bumping because I've been having the same issue ever since I came home from college. basically the situation is that websites load extremely slowly on my mac pro, but not on any other computer (all windows pcs) connected to the same network. I even disconnected my mac pro and plugged in my windows laptop and the connectivity was fine - which makes me think it has something to do with the settings on the mac.
I disabled IPV6 and reboot my mac, router, and modem but to no avail. what's wrong?! has anyone found a definitive solution for this problem? it's very aggravating.

In iCloud preferences when I deselect an item, e.g. documents I get a message saying the info in documents will be taken off my mac and kept in iCloud. I would rather have the info on my mac and not in iCloud. How can I keep my data on my mac?

My mistake, my OS is 10.9.4.
    Thank you for your reply.
I guess, I really don't understand iCloud and how files are stored and where. I gather when I was asked to set it up I should have declined. Anyway, it looks like some of my files are stored in the cloud. If I shut off "documents" in the preferences it will remove those docs from my macbook, but they will remain in the cloud and I could get access to them for another computer if I set it up.
I also gather to avoid this, I have to, on a file by file basis, save them to my mac and then they will be on my mac. What I don't get, is that these files must exist on my mac because I can edit it without being connected to the internet. Maybe those files I see when disconnected from the internet are on my mac and I wouldn't be able to see cloud files unless I was connected to the internet.
My concern is that when I deselect "documents" in the iCloud preferences it warns me that those documents on my mac will be removed from my mac. I am afraid to deselect "documents' or "calendars" as a result.
If I seem confused, I am. Please don't feel obligated to reply if my message is too muddled.

Ok Apple users...Is there a way to delete e-mails on my Mac and not have to delete the same e-mails on my iPhone, and iPad...and vise-versa. I have the Cloud, and thought that everything would sync all of the time. If you know of a setting I need to adjust, please let me know.

Are you referring to @mac.com, @me.com or @icloud.com emails? Or some other email providers emails?
If the former, it should do that automatically. If the latter, no. iCloud does not (nor is it supposed to) sync non-Apple provided emails.

  • Backup itouch on another mac and not lose whats on itouch when sync

backup itouch on another mac and not lose whats on itouch when sync

Make sure your new Mac is authorized in iTunes. Disable autosync in itunes, connect your ipod, right click on it in the device list and choose backup.
This will save data, pictures and settings to itunes. See what's included in this backup here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766
Transfer your purchases the same way to copy all apps and bought media from the Store to your computer.
Set up at least one contact and event on your new Mac, to be able the merge your calendars and contacts after your ipod got wiped during the first sync.
The rest of the data can be restored from the backup you made.
    Restoring: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414
Music is one way only, from the computer to your device, unless you bought the songs in itunes and transferred your purchases.
There is 3rd party software out there, but not supported by Apple, see this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2013615&tstart=0
You can save other data following this article: How to back up your data and set up as a new device

  • Why do I receive some text messages ONLY on my mac and NOT on both my phone AND mac?

I have my iPhone linked to my messages app on my macbook pro. Often times incoming messages are only sent to my mac and NOT my phone. When I turn on my mac I see that I have missed several text messages. This didn't happen before I upgraded to the latest software for my phone.

Have you checked to see which accounts are active on your Mac?

I want to copy fotos to a mass storage external HD, but my emac only allow me to copy from the HD to the mac and not from the mac to the HD, how can I do it? thanks in adavance for your help

The external HD might be set to Read Only on your eMac.  Try this:
If the external HD shows on your desktop, single click the HD to highlight it.  From the Finder Menu bar at the top of the screen, click on File, pull down and click on Get Info.  At the bottom of window that opens, under Sharing and Permissions, you might see something like:
    System:  Read & Write
    Admin:  Read & Write
    User X:  Read Only
User X being your user account.
    Good luck.

  • HT4968 My "Home" calendar only appears on my Mac and not the Cloud even though "Home" is checked in all places.

My "Home" calendar only appears on my Mac and not the Cloud. If I uncheck "home on my mac" all events disappear even though it's still checked on the iCloud calendars.

(unless you already have one) Create a new empty calendar from the iCal file menu, select which account you want to create it in.
If you have only a few appointments you can move them individually by editing them and changing the calendar in the edit options.
Alternatively you can copy all the appointments in one calendar to another and delete the original.
To copy a calendar ctrl-click on it from the menu that appears when you select the calendar button (top left corner of iCal) and choose export (export it to your desktop for ease)
Double click the exported file and choose the new empty calendar to import them into.
Ctrl-click on the original calendar from the menu that appears when you select the calendar button and choose delete.

  • Slow download on Mac and Linux using sockets

We have a need to download as much as possible for a couple seconds using sockets, and we have noticed that Adobes flash player on Mac and Linux are slower then Windows while we get good results on all tree OS using Goggles flash player in Chrome.
Our setup, client side, is a 1 Gbit/s internet connection throttle by a 100 Mbit/s switch. On the server side, we have an Apache web server (during testing) on a 1 Gbit/s internet connection.
For testing purposes, we download as much as possible of a 2 Gb big file for approximately 10 seconds. After we connect to the server, via a socket, we send an http request to start downloading the file. Using bytesAvailable, we get the number of bytes downloaded every half second, calculate the average speed for that half second and store that value in an array. After 20 times, we stop downloading and close the socket connection. Finally we calculate the average download speed of the 20 measurements.
All tests are preformed on version 11.6.602.180 except for Adobe Flash player on Ubuntu were the 11.2 r202 version. Adobe Flash player on Firefox 19.0.2 (other browsers were tested with similar results) and Google Flash player on Chrome 26.0.1410.43. Each OS/player was tested 5 times and presents the average.

In further investigation we built an easy Flash based latency meter. We download a small txt-file, measuring the time between just before we send http-request and until we receive a response from the web server.
We have the setup as for the speed tests, but we do this 5 * 20 times with each OS/player.

        writeln("GET " + path + " HTTP/1.1");

    private function writeln(str:String):void{

        socket.writeUTFBytes(str);
    private function socketDataHandler(event:ProgressEvent):void{
        var latecy:Number = new Date().time - nStart; // latency in ms
Using a packet analyzer (Wireshark) on the OS X/Adobe player, the time from http-request is sent to data is received is approximately 2 ms. An ack is sent less then 0.04 ms after the packet is received. Using the socketData event to send a new http-request, just after we measure the time for the last package, can see event created delays. We have a delay between 64 and 67 ms compare that to OS X/Google player with between 1 and 3 ms delay.
Note: When playing around a timer, that fired a number of times during parts of a large number of latency measurements, we notice that measurements when the timer was running were better. Testing having a empty timer firing as fast as possible constantly during both download and latency measurements we got significantly better results on OS X/Adobe player, although not good. Average download 31,82 Mbit/s and average latency 16,59 ms.

Bumping this topic again as it's still sort of bugging me, but the problem has been isolated to a few certain sites. On some i get the maximum speed and on others i get snailspeed. One of the slow ones unfortunately is basically anything that has to do with Apple....So all Quicktime movie trailers, iTunes stuff, movies etc are slow, except podcasts that are German. I'm downloading the 30 day trial of iWork and i'm getting whopping 19,2KB/s, when i should be getting about 1300KB/s. You can just imagine the frustration:/
I'm just wondering am i alone on this or is anybody else excperienceing similar? And as usual, on windows i'm getting full speed all the time, anywhere, grrrr....!

  • Slow internet on Mac compared to XP machine

    Hi all,
I'm relativiely new to the Mac World so my knowledge is limited to what I read on the posts here on Discussions and some web sites you guys refer people to. I've been working on this problem for two days now and I hope you guys can help!
I have two machines connected to the same Linksys router.
    Mac: 2.1GHz 20" iMac G5 (iSight) 1.5GB 250GB HD OS X 10.4.3.
    PC : 1GHz Pentium III 19" 1GB 170GB HDs WinXP SP2.
I tried Using three different Web Browsers on Mac : Latest version of Mozilla, Firefox and Safari, so problem is not browser specific.
Alternating test between both machines within about 45 secondes. And with all browsers on Mac and Internet Explorer on PC.
Using "http://webservices.cnet.com/Bandwidth/" to test bandwidth on both machines I get the following:
    Mac: 859 to 1662 kbps
    PC : 3489 to 3541 kbps
Mac got 525 to 785 before I tried BandwidthOptimizer
Mac is running clean (no Anti-virus, no firewall and no other app than browser running)
Shutting down Cable Modem, Router and Both machines did nothing to help speedup Mac.
Anyone has an idea why Mac is so slow?
    TIA for your help!
    Dan

Hi Bob and Thanks a lot.
I already had my ISP's DNS info entered so that wasn't it. Although the faster DNS were not the ones my ISP was advertizing or the ones my router said it got from my ISP but some other DNS I picked up from other users of my ISP. And like I said, I tried three different browsers on the mac with the same results, so it wasn't browser related either.
As for network configuration, the original order was Bluetooth, Integrated Ethernet, Airport, Integrated FireWire and all were active. I changed the order to Airport, Integrated Ethernet, Bluetooth, Integrated FireWire and deactivated Bluetooth and FireWire.
    Network Status now shows:
Integrated Ethernet active with an IP address and that I'm connected via Integrated Ethernet.
    Airport is actually closed.
I do use Aiport, but not at home so I keep it deactivated from the menu bar status icon.
My new configuration rocks, most of the time the MAC is now faster than the PC.
Just a couple questions more though. Why should Airport be the first connection on the list? And shouldn't the preffered connection be the first one and then go down the list?
    Again, Thanks a lot.

  • How can I make my iPhone sync with iCal on my Mac and not with iCloud?

I live and travel in Africa and wi-fi is frequently a luxury.  iCloud syncing between Mac and my iPhones (a 3GS & 4) is not possible but when I turn iClod off, it deletes the calendar on my Mac.  In another forum it was suggested that you export your various calendars (personal, business etc) to the desktop, log out of iCloud and therefore have your iCal calendar deleted, re-boot to clear anything in the cache, import the calendars which are then on My Mac and sync.  It worked all the way until the last bit.  Syncing the iPhone is clunkingly slow and it only syncs one of my calendars which is the only one that appears in the info dialogue box in iTunes when the iPhone is connected.  Can anyone help?  iCloud is I am sure fine for those who have regular access to wi-fi but not me - I will be happy to go back to my time capsule which has done me well over the years.
    Some advice please

Plug yr iPhone to your compu in the old fashioned way with cable.
Just to cover yourself...select the iPhone in Devices of left pane of iTunes window, then on main pane, select radio button Back up to Computer. Right click on the iPhone in devices, do a backup. It shld then be on your compu'.
Then, back in main windo, select Info 'tab' from top of the right pane, and tick the Sync iCal events.
    I'm sure this will help.
If it all goes pear-shape, u have the backup to restore the pre-sync device.

  • Why are some messages pushing to mac and not phone?

I am very frustrated, as, I have had occational times where a text bypasses my phone and goes to my macbook. My wife will use the laptop frequently and it happens sometimes when she is on the computer.   It will somtimes send a text the computer even if somone is not using it, though.  How do I get the system to send the message to both devices, or, to simply stop all texts from going to the computer?  thx

Log out of iMessage on your Mac, and the messages will be forced to only go to your phone.   If your phone has no signal at time the message was sent to you, that could explain why Mac is getting but not your phone.
I'd first try to logout of iMessage on both devices, then reactivate first on your phone, then your Mac.   See if problem fixes itself.

  • Photos look great on a MAC. and not so great on a PC. why?

    the subject says it all.
my photos look perfect on a MAC(safari and firefox). when i view my photos on a PC(explorer and firefox), they look dark, over saturated, and sometimes out of focus! can somebody tell me why this happens ? can this be fixed? its not the monitor because i've looked at the site on several machines.
any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I look at you site with safari on the mac and ie on the pc side and see so difference.
If you are accessing with ie on the mac, it's not going to work. very outdated.
On the pc side make sure it's the latest version and java is enabled.
again, it look the same to me.
    good luck
