Slow internet on Mac Pro?

Any idea why my 2009 (Nehalem) Mac Pro gets a 9.74 download speed on Speedtest.net but my 2009 MBP and 2011 MBA both get speeds above 20?
All are obviously on the same wireless network and all are running Lion... could it be the Airport Card in the Mac Pro? Heard their placement inside the machine has caused reception issues...
Any thoughts appreciated.

I just got my Mac Pro tower this week. 2.66 quad with 6 gigs of RAM. I'm having the exact same issue. I ran my MacBook Pro (early model w/2 gig RAM) next to my new Mac Pro tower - both working wirelessly. My MacBook Pro is loading the exact same pages 2-3 times faster than my brand new Mac Pro tower.
I've been using a program called Mr. T1 to measure my internet speed on each machine - http://198.170.88.241/coin-operated.com/?p=777
It is really disappointing and upsetting to see my brand new machine getting smoked by a 3 year old laptop. What gives?

  • 10.9.2 is so slow on a MAC PRO 2011

    OMG
i took a chance and upgraded from 10.6.8 on my fully optimized MAC PRO
on the IMAC 2012  things go faster
    what a fool i am
why are things slower on the MAC pro
and faster with the older system??
    i repeat OMG

How much RAM installed in your Mac Pro,
How full is your Mac's hard drive?
Do you run any antivirus software on your Mac? Antivirus software can slow down the normal operation of OS X as well having negative performance effects on OS X and other adverse system issues.
Do you have apps like MacKeeper or any other maintenance apps like CleanMyMac 1 or 2, TuneUpMyMac or anything like these apps, installed on your Mac?
These types of apps, while they appear to be helpful, can do too good a job of data "cleanup" causing the potential to do serious data corruption or data deletion and render a perfectly running OS completely dead and useless leaving you with a frozen, non-functional Mac.
Plus, these type of apps aren't really necessary.
    They really aren't.
There are manual methods to clear off unnecessary data off of your Mac that are safer and you have complete control over your Mac and not just leave a piece of auto cleaning software in charge of clearing off data off of your Mac.
Their potential of causing OS X issues outweighs the implied good and benefits these types of hard drive or memory "cleaning" apps are written to do.
Plus, the software company's that write these apps make it hard to easily uninstall these apps if something DOES go wrong and these apps work in a way where you have no recovery or revert function to return your Mac back to its former, working state in the event something does go wrong.
It is best to never download and install these types of apps.
The risk to your system and data is too great a risk!
Your Mac Pro could have Mavericks incompatible hardware and/or software.
You may need to update all of your third party software if there are OS X Mavericks updates that can be applied. You may need to, ACTUALLY,  go to the third party developers' websites if there are no updates through the Mac App Store.
Update all of your Web browser Internet plugins, also.
Also, if you have any connected third party devices, like non-Apple, third party keyboards, mice, drawing tablets, hubs, card  readers, etc, you need to go to the device maker's website and update the drivers for these devices to OS X Mavericks compatible versions, if available or needed.

If you are still within your 15 day return period,  nicely explain that you may return the computer without iDVD. That usually does the trick.  (Ask to speak to a senior advisor.)

If that doesn't work you can purchase iLife 11  (includes iDVD) on disk (don't get the download) for about $39.

  • Adobe Bridge CC very slow on New Mac Pro

Im running both Bridge CC (6.1.0.115) and CS6 on my New Mac Pro
the Bridge CC is obviously slower than Bridge CS6.
CC also very easy to get the spinning ball every click on Bridge CC, very annoying.
Also Im using Dell 4K monitor, If I load monitor size preview will be really slow, even on the New Mac Pro. is there any way We can set a specific size of the preview? which can speedup the preview loading

If you go to the menu File > Project Settings > General and set the Renderer to Software Only, any change?

  • Slow internet on Mac but not on PC

I've had my mac for about a year and also have a Dell desktop and a Dell laptop. I have DSL with a Linksys wireless router. My mac is an OS x 10.5.8 and I don't have antivirus software on it. I am still very new to the mac and don't know much about it.
We just had a new modem installed and our speed increased and my mac is very slow to connect to pages, but my Dell desktop and laptop are way faster. Did a speed test and download speed is 539 kb and upload speed is 389 kb.
What can I do to speed it up? Is a virus possible? Does my machine need regular maintenance like cleaning files or something? Wish I knew as much about my mac as I do my pc.

bumping because I've been having the same issue ever since I came home from college. basically the situation is that websites load extremely slowly on my mac pro, but not on any other computer (all windows pcs) connected to the same network. I even disconnected my mac pro and plugged in my windows laptop and the connectivity was fine - which makes me think it has something to do with the settings on the mac.
I disabled IPV6 and reboot my mac, router, and modem but to no avail. what's wrong?! has anyone found a definitive solution for this problem? it's very aggravating.

  • Why is Compressor way slower on 1 Mac Pro

This is about Compressor 3.5.3 but it's not really about the version.
I have two identical MacPros 2,1 models both running OSX 10.6.8 and Final Cut 7.0.3 and Compressor 3.5.3.
The only difference in the machine is one has 20 gigs of ram and the other has 24 gigs.
I'm capturing BetaSP tape, 30 min loads, and then converting it to ProRes LT with Compressor. Same settings in both instances of Compressor.
I load 12 captures into one machine's Compressor and hit submit. It finishes in a little over two hours.
I load only 5 captures into the other machine's Compressor and hit submit. It finished in over 5 hours.
They are both 8-core machines with the same processors and are identical otherwise. I can't believe that 4 more gigs of ram would make that much difference.
Also they are sourcing off identical raids as well and writing back to identical raids.  Why is one machine so majorly SLOW!

    Hi
How much free space is there on the Main Hard Disks ?
    • Exactly the same ?
    • one is 5Gb or less the other 100Gb or more
I never go less than 25Gb for work with interlaced SD-Video Quality
think that about 4-5 times more will work OK for full quality HD progressive - may be ?
What Processes are running in back ground ?
    • Time Machine
    • File Vault
    • Internet
    others
    NON on my Video Mac
else things that matters reg. speed and performance (for iMovie/iDVD - but are really general)
TO GET IT TO WORK SLIGHTLY FASTER
    • Minimum of 25Gb free space on Start-Up hard disk
    • No other programs running in BackGround e.g. Energy-Saver
    • Don’t let HD spin down or be turned off (in Energy-Save)
    • Move external/secondary hard disks that are not to be used to Trash - To be disconnected/turned off
    • Goto Spotlight and set the rest of them under Integrity (not to be scanned)
    • Set screen-saver to a folder without any photo - then make an active corner (up right for me) and set
pointer to this - turns on screen saver - to show that it has nothing to show
    • No File Vault on - Important
    • NO - TimeMachine - during iMovie/iDVD work either ! IMPORTANT
    • Lot's of icons on DeskTop/Finder also slows down the Mac noticeably
    • Start a new User-Account and log into this and iMovie get's faster too - if a project is in a hurry
    • And let Mac run on Mains - not just on battery

  • Can too many Photos slow down a Mac Pro?

Hi, I have atleast 100,000 photos on my pc, would this many photos slow down a 2.66GHz quad core mac pro with 6 gigs of memory? thanks

I have 60,000. I use non-boot drive of course for data. Some people have huge music and video libraries of 2TB spanning 2-3 drives on stripped RAIDs.
Mac Pro and OS X really likes RAM, and the base for DDR3 8-core is to have 6 DIMMs and I'd go with 6 x 2GB, either Apple or 3rd party RAM, then add 3 x 640GB drives (WD Black Caviar). Stripe two, even if you partition it as 400GB each. http://www.barefeats.com/nehal04.html
And keep the boot drive to OS and applications primarily.

  • Slow boot on Mac Pro

I've got a mid-2010 Mac Pro that has a very long boot time.  Here is what it is doing:
    Power on
Blank screen for 35 sec then boot sound + grey screen
At 1 minute I get the apple
At 1:10 get the spinning circle
At 1:39 get the login icons
This seems far far to long for this machine.  It has awesome specs so I would think it is a lot faster:
    2x6 core CPU's
    96GB RAM
    1TB SSD boot drive
    12 TB internal stripped volume
Two ESATA cards with 5-bay Drobo's on it
Whatever fast video card they came with by default
I've tried reducing the ram to 64GB (which was once the source of a problem with an OS upgrade).
    I've disconnected the ESATA drives.
    I've removed the ESATA cards.
    I've reset the PRAM
    I've reset the SMC
The ESATA cards in particular with the Drobo are VERY slow, so that is why I thought pulling them might resolve the issue (they don't have great support in the Mac Pro, but they do work).
I'm at wits end here.  This thing should scream.  My MBP retina 15"  with SSD boots very fast and I would have expected the Mac Pro to boot similarly fast.
The SSD is attached to the same cable that the DVD-RW drive is on (i.e. that cable has two heads and the SSD is on one of them).  Could this be the issue?
    Any help?

Still has quite a bit of space free.
No, that is what Mac OS X says. But it is calculating for Rotating Drives.
Mac OS X deletes a block and adds that block to the Free List (it does not erase it). The amount of reported Free space it reports is adjusted.
Without TRIM, the drive is not notified that the data in that block has been deleted. On a Rotating drive that has blocks pre-allocated and pre-numbered, that is not an issue.
Without TRIM on an SSD, which requires an erased SuperBlock to write anything, it is still carrying the deleted data as if it were good. When a write comes down, it tries to find a Free SuperBlock to write into, and when they run low, it is forced to revert to Read-Modify-Write cycles (much slower) to get anything done.
If you have run a Speed Test, you have written many blocks to your SSD. Unless TRIM is enabled, all that data are still carried along, even though Mac OS X will Never reference them again except to overwrite those blocks (which the SSD does not literally do, it writes a SuperBlock instead).
However, when I ran a disk utility repair on the old one mounted in an external ESATA dock, it didn't give the message Trimming unused blocks".
Enabling TRIM for a specific Drive makes a change in Mac OS X, not in the drive or the Driver that is loaded off the drive. In order to effect the Big TRIM, you would need to have ALSO Installed and Enabled TRIM for that drive on your alternate Mac OS X. TRIM cannot be Installed in a Recovery_HD (at least, not yet).

  • Wireless connection to internet with mac pro tower and airport extreme base station?

Hi, I have an airport extreme base station and a mac pro tower without a airport card. My internet wireless router is a great distance from my computer so I can't connect the base station directly to the router. I've attached the airport extreme base station to the tower via an ethernet cable, the base station seems to be wirelessly connected to the home network but the browser is showing "not connected".
    Please help.
    Thanks

Shouldn't the Airport base station be able to connect to it wirelessly?
It might be possible, but the Ethernet ports on the AirPort Extreme would not be enabled, even if it did connect to the Thompson' WiFi signal.
As Tesserax notes, among the Apple routers, only the 802.11n versions of the AirPort Express have the capability to "join" a wireless network with the Ethernet port being enabled.

  • Slow Performance On Mac Pro 12-Core

    Hello Everyone,
I just recently purchased a 2012 Mac pro 12-Core and i have been getting unbelievabley slow performance with it. I am using Premiere Pro CS6 and it seems that the footage can sometimes get a bit laggy at times and not play back smoothly, sometimes rendering can take a bit of time as well. However here are the specs of my system:
    Mac Pro 12-Core 2.4GHz (2.67GHz Turbo Boost)
    40GB of Ram
    ATI 5770 Graphics Card
1TB scratch disk (with a user on the drive that i can boot into)
    OCZ 120GB Vertex 3 SSD OS/APPS drive
First question i would like to get answered once and for all.. Did i make a bad decision by purchasing a computer with such a slow clock speed (2.4GHz)?? I figured since The new editing software is switching to 64bit it shouldn't depend on clock speed anymore? (i just want to be sure that i purchased a more than capable machine) However i will be buying a Samsung 840 Pro Series 256GB SSD Drive for Scratch within the month. (I dont have the budget to buy a Raid controller yet to utilize 6GB/s transfer speeds, so 1 Fast SSD drive will have to do for now)
I should mention the current SSD drive im on right now only has 13GB remaining, would that affect performance? Also, my 1Tb media drive is filled up with CRAP from my previous computer (Migration transferred EVERYTHING to that drive, only 120GB remains) would that drive with the media im working with affect performance too? Also just as a test, i took some footage from my GoPro Hero 3 camera and put it on my SSD to see if that would eliminate the lag, but still lag was present in Premiere.. (the footage was in a crappy .M4P format, so that may have affected it, but I dont know)
    Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!
    -Thanks in Advance!

The new editing software is switching to 64bit it shouldn't depend on clock speed anymore?
    Wrong, clock speed is everything.
I should mention the current SSD drive im on right now only has 13GB remaining, would that affect performance?
    No, not really.
Also, my 1Tb media drive is filled up with CRAP from my previous computer (Migration transferred EVERYTHING to that drive, only 120GB remains) would that drive with the media im working with affect performance too?
When fill rates go up, performance goes down. With almost 90% fill rate, the disk performs only at around 50% of a new disk.
Two disks is absolute bare minimum, and your cores will constantly be waiting for the disks to read or write data, sitting idle most of the time.
Also just as a test, i took some footage from my GoPro Hero 3 camera and put it on my SSD to see if that would eliminate the lag, but still lag was present in Premiere..
GoPro material requires a very fast computer, which yours is not with the low clock speed, outdated E5620 CPU's, only two disks, and a non-CUDA capable video card.
Take a look at the PPBM5 Benchmark and look at the system at rank # 854, which is a MacPro, very similar to your system, dual E5620, AMD video card, less memory but uses three disks.
So, your system would be around the same rank as the one above, among the slowest 25% of all systems and something like 10 - 15 times slower than a fast system. You tax your system to the extreme with the GoPro Hero3 material, and the consequence is the slow performance you see.
Sorry, not much you can do, other than get a new system. If you sell it now, it may get you a price, good enough to get a much faster Windows system and maybe even keep the change.  Simply said, you bought a MacPro for € 3.5 K, sell it for € 3 K, buy a PC for € 2.5 K that is around 5-6 times faster and your loss is recovered.
However i will be buying a Samsung 840 Pro Series 256GB SSD Drive for Scratch within the month
What a pity the MacPro does not have SATA 6G ports, only SATA 3G, because then that SSD will run at almost half speed.

  • Slow render speed:  Mac Pro vs. Mac Mini (FCP Vs. FCE)

About a year ago I purchased a Mac mini (2gb ram, 2.0 dual core processor running OS 10.4) and using Final Cut Express. Understandable, rending and exporting took awhile.
A week ago I upgraded to a Mac Pro (10gb ram, 2.8 8-core processors running OS 10.5) and Final Cut Pro Studio 6. I assumed that I would see a rather dramatic decrease in in the time it takes to render (and to export).
However, the I am seeing virtually no difference whatsoever in rendering speed between the Mac mini running FCE and the Mac Pro running FCP. I'm very disappointed.
What gives? I'm editing virtually the same material and it's just as slow as before.
Any ideas anyone on what may be causing this?

I am generally using SD video imported (log and transfer) directly from the hard drive of a Sony HDR-SR12 camera, although I also use captured video from a Panasonic HVX200 camera. My "Easy Setup" setting has been DV-NTSC for both Final Cut Express and now Final Cut Studio.
The rendering that I'm talking about, for example, is when I put an effect on a video track that requires rendering before I can play it.
I'm then typically exporting the finished video to a Quick Time movie DV-NTSC setting.
Again, there is no improvement at all in the time it takes to render and export using the Mac PRO vs. the Mac mini using identical settings. I would think there should be a significant improvement.

  • Very slow speeds with Mac Pro talking to a Ubuntu Raid Server

So I have an environment where mainly macs and a couple Windows PCs use a Ubuntu Raid 50 file server. When attempting to access the server the Mac Pros take typically 1 minute to view the file structure and sometimes timeout, the Windows machines take about 1 second. Also this seems to affect copying and deleting which takes much longer from the Mac side. The server is setup simply with a samba mount to allow access.
Any suggestions for how I can attack this issue? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Colin

Nope. The Macs and PCs are on the same subnet and plugged into the same switch, from the wall.

  • Render times very slow on new Mac Pro and Premiere CC

    Hi there
I have a brand spanking new Mac Pro  (specs below) working off a G Studio r 24 TB array. Rendering anything in Premiere is taking an age (2 minutes timeline is taking 30 minutes). I am cutting 4k Sony F5 footage (XAVC). I have done tests with 1080 material and this doesn't make any difference.
I have spoken to Adobe support and reset permissions plus all the basic workarounds suggested: but there has been no improvement. I was due a call back but have not heard anything.
Can anyone suggest a solution - i have several important deadlines coming up, and can't really deal with the downtime.
I understand 3rd party apps take longer, but even with PP effects, rendering is taking way too long: especially with a super fast system like this.

  • Failing to connect through AFP and FTP from the Internet on Mac Pro?

    Hi all,
I have tried to access my Mac Pro (located at home) from my work place without any success. I used to do this on a regular basis with my old G4, and never faced any problem.
All the boxes are ticked in the Sharing Prefs pane, I have keyed in the correct IP address to access my machine, and for some obscure reason it simply doesn't work...
I'm sure someone must have tried this, I'll be interested to know if I am missing something somewhere...
Looking forward for an answer here!!
    Thanks,

    Hi Ned,
You have hit the right spot! I couldn't remember having set up this NAT for my G4, that was too long ago, but I went back into the Belkin Router and readjusted the settings, and it's all fine now!!
For those interested, it took me a while to find out that with the Belkin 4-Ports Router, you can only direct the traffic for AFP or FTP to ONLY 1 IP Address... A bit short in my case, but I manage to find a workaround where I have assigned 1 IP address for the Mac Pro to do AFP (File Sharing) and 1 IP address on my old G4 to do FTP (File Transfer Protocol)...
And if anyone needs help to connect to their home machine while physically being in another place, I'll be happy to help...
    And it's happening!
    Thanks again Ned, well spotted!!!
    Cheers,

  • Slow internet with macbook pro retina (late2013)

The longer I'm having my new Macbook Pro Retina, the slower it gets concerning the internet.
There is sometimes no speed at all... I have to wait about half a minute to start the loading of for example an ebay site.
As I use my old Macbook Pro (late 2009) right beside the new one, I have the perfect comparison. The old one is fast as ever. Even my Iphone is much faster in our home WLAN. The new one just works and works on heavy loading site after site.
Shouldn't it be the opposite way?
    Has someone the same problems?
    Any solutions?
