Slow internet on one device

Why is my internet slow on just my Mac Mini(desktop)?
Here is my setup: I've got Time Warner Oceanic Cable internet running to my Airport Extreme, which in turn provides a wifi connection to my Mac Mini (about 6months old), two iPads, two iPhones (when both are in the house), an old Macbook Pro, as well as a wired connection to my Vizio TV and my gaming console. For some reason, my internet connection on my desktop is dreadfully slpw. I've done side by side comparisons where my iPad will be 15mbps download and my desktop will get between .5-1.5mbps. All of my other devices seem to get good speed, although this depends on time of day. Regardless, the desktop is nearly always slow by comparison.
I've tried changing channels on the router, but that doesn't really do anything. The desktop has full wifi signal, as does the iPad, even though they are a solid 40 30 feet away in another room.
Any thoughts?

WiFi signal and link speed can be different..
Post the screenshot showing the link.. hold down the option key while you click the wifi symbol.
Remember wifi is shared.. if other devices are using the bandwidth, the mini cannot use it.. nothing to do with signal or link speed.
Use the wireless diagnostics.. what does that tell you??
Open the utilities and do a wireless survey of the area.

  • Slow Internet Speed - Multiple Devices

I have the 50mbs internet with Comcast and last night I was unable to game online (PS4) while my roomate watched YouTube videos.
My game was lagging extremely bad to the point where I couldn't play.
50mbs seems like it should be plenty of speed considering there were no other devices even connected to the internet (I shut down my computer and laptop).
I did a speed test this morning and it said I was running over 50mbs down and 12mbs up.
Are my speeds slower at night? Can I only use one device at a time?
    Thanks.

What is your speedtest showing at night? You said it displays 50 Mbps in the morning, but never stated the speeds at night aside from saying they're slower.

  • Slow Internet on all devices when Mac is connected to network

    Hi all
For the last few days, my Internet has been slow when my Mac is connected. I have 6 Mbps, and usually get around 5 via speedtest when everything is fine, but at times it drops to 2.5 or even 0.5. The problem is intermittent. Someone from my ISP came yesterday to look at it. However, he says it is a problem with the Mac, as when disconnecting the Mac completely, and connecting via pc, the speed is fine. The mac is not currently downloading anything in the background, or anything like that.
Once the Mac is connected, the pc has more or less the same speed issues as the pc. The issue is the same whether connected by wireless or cable.
He said it is a virus on my Mac and that I should format it. Doing some reading though,I can't find any evidence online that would back this up. I do use p2p sharing, but am always careful not to install programs or anything suspicious looking.
Is he likely to be correct, or is there another solution? And if it is a virus, is there anything less drastic than formatting to resolve it?
Many thanks in advance - I am tearing my hair out over this one and don't know where to turn!
Ps Mac is new this year, and has all the latest updates

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including Wi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • NH1005, only one device at a time connects to internet

I just switched my net to suddenlink cable (4mb/down, 512k/up) from a 756k clearwire broadband connection. I'm using the same network setup as before, all my machines set to auto-acquire IP and DNS addresses. Now though, I can only get on the internet with one device at a time, the other machines cannot find the DHCP server. I thought my NH1005 router had gone nuts, but that wasnt the case, went and got a new one at walmart and it does the same crap.. tried as well to access my router via 192.168.1.1, and even went in and tried using my gateway address to access my router.. both failed. I'm at a loss for what to do, especially seeing as how my old ISP just WORKED when i plugged it all in. Yes, i've reset my modem and all that stuff, many times, just at the end of my rope here. BTW my machines are a winXP laptop, and 2 playstation2's running Final Fantasy XI online.

hi..it seems that you have got a cable modem..and as NH1005 is a hub , only one computer can get connected at a time....
multiple computers can go online only if the hub is connected to a router...

  • I want to use Back to my mac. When I try to turn it on, it says "Back to My Mac may be slow because more than one device on your network is providing network services.   Turn off NAT and DHCP on one of the devices and try again." How do I fix this?

Not sure if I am doing this right. This is my first time in the support community.
I imagine what I put in my heading was supposed to go in here.
I want to use Back to my mac. When I try to turn it on, it says "Back to my mac may be slow because more than one device on your network is providing network services. Turn off NAT and DHCP on one of the devices and try again. See the documentation that came with your device for information about turning off network services"
Does anyone know how I do this? I contacted my ISP (Telus in Canada) and they did not know anything (not that they usually do).

Why do ISPs insist upon making things so difficult for their customers?
If you cannot get them to understand that you would prefer to use your own router over their piece of cheap junk, perhaps the information in the following will be useful:
    http://keithbalomben.wordpress.com/2012/03/29/telus-actiontec-v1000h-hacks-and-i nformation/
    Scroll down to DHCP Settings
You will need to log in with proper "technician" credentials. They are provided in the above link as
    Username: tech
    Password: t3lu5tv
... but these may or may not work. Try it, and if you cannot get anywhere at least now you know what to ask Telus to do in return for your business.

  • I have qualitynet either wired internet. I buy a card good for a month at a time, I can only log into one device at any one time.  Are there settings I can adjust on my airport express to allow all my devices to connect to wi-fi without having to log out.

I have qualitynet either wired internet. I buy a card good for a month at a time, I can only log into one device at any one time.  Are there settings I can adjust on my airport express to allow all my devices to connect to wi-fi without having to log out of one devise before using another?

Some Internet providers that limit access to a single device at a time do so by the device's hardware MAC address. If your ISP is one of those, you may be able to substitute the MAC address of your AirPort Express base station for the computer. I would suggest that you contact them to find out if this is allowable.

  • Very Slow Internet Lion (This one is for the "Apple Network Team")

    hello,
    i'm joão from Portugal, Europe.
a couple of weekends ago i've updated three macs to Lion.
    2009 MacMini, 2007 White Macbook, 2010 iMac 21".
    problems? only with the iMac.
no connection drops but slow slow slow very slow internet. wired, speedtest marked 15Mbps download. wireless? 1Mbps, 0,3Mbps, 3Mbps, very unstable.
with Snow Leopard everything was ok.
tried every solution from every site and finally got it working flawlessly.
tried clean install instead of update.
    tried new dns servers.
    tried disabling ipv6.
tried remove wifi interface then add it again.
    tried service order.
tried PRAM, NVRAM, SMC, you name it, reset.
    tried removing preferences folder.
tried different browsers -> same symptoms.
    tried disable/enable airport.
    tried 10.7.1, 10.7.2, combo, delta.
    tried router's firmware update.
tried putting the computer closer to the router.
tried resetting the router, factory defaults.
    tried changing router's channel.
    tried disabling router's firewall.
tried watch router's event log, nothing suspicious.
    tried disabling router's wep password.
tried pinging a site for a couple of minutes, 2% packet loss.
tried hundreds of pages and forums...
during this attempts, macmini and macbook showed very good wireless internet speed.
iMac? slow, slow, slow, slow, slow, like seeing gmail's loading screen for more than one minute...
    again and again speedtest 1Mbps, 0,3Mbps, 1Mbps, 1Mbps, 0,3Mbps, 3Mbps.
discovered the pingtest utility in the same site and iMac's ping was grade C, grade F, grade D, with big values...mac mini and macbook were alwas grade B, with low pings (imagine 25ms on them vs. 138ms on the iMac).
i was fed up with the situation, every week tried and failed. iMac's owner was wanting to get his Lion money back and stick to Snow Leopard again. imagine recent Windows switchers thinking they went back to the same situations....
but then i found this website. and then realised macbook and macmini's wi-fi were both powered by a broadcom chipset. iMac's was powered by an Atheros chipset! did what the guy says on that site (replaced Lion's Atheros kernel driver by the one on Slow Leopard), and now everything is perfect, like on Snow Leopard. very good speed.
what a relief. thank you sir.
    hope it can help you.
hope it reachs apple's network developers...this is not good, you can't fail on something so simple and essential as decent wifi quality...

    humm...
i've clean installed one macbook (late 2008?) and one mac mini (early 2009) both with broadcom adapters and both of them were ok, after the install.
so, speedtest and pingtest are websites (speedtest.net and pingtest.net), both test your internet connection with the help of a 'local' server. it's useful, for instance, if you want see if two different computers connected to the same router have the same connection quality.
so if you can connect to some routers nicely and you have problems with your router, to me, it seems like you have some problems with the connection between your computer and the router.
an old router might bring you problems (there are some advices on the internet to change router's channel and so...), i would recommend to see if motorola has some sort of firmware update to your router. if you don't have complex router configurations, you might try to reset to factory defaults (search the manual). that, once, fixed a problem with a smc router and two macbooks (one, older, could connect easily, the other wouldn't connect to the router).
if that atheros driver trick, resolved your issue, that's strange
make sure broadcom isn't your ethernet adapter and not your wireless adapter
did you resetted your pram and smc? do you  have Mac OS 10.7.2?
i hope you can figure that out.

  • Internet connection instable on only one device, via airport extreme

    Situation
I have the strangest situation. In my setup, every device connects just fine with the WLAN. Yet, one iphone 4 is for periods of time losing internet connection whilst still connected to the WLAN.
    Setup
I have my airport extreme connected to a Zyxel modem and set my airport extreme to bridge mode. I turned the WIFI off for the modem, and ON for the airport extreme.
All but one device have no trouble connecting
The following devices operate just fine:
    Mac Pro [wireless]
Playstation 3 [wired into airport extreme]
    Playstation Vita [wireless]
    HP laptop [wireless]
    my girlfriend's iphone 4
The problem occurs solely on my iphone 4.
    Oddities
While me and my girlfriend have the exact same phone (not jailbreaked) and both just the latest version of iOS, hers works fine while my phone has this connection trouble.
The connection with the WLAN is never lost; I can communicate with other devices on the same LAN, it's just the internet that's not working for periods of time.
    Workarounds
If I turn on the WIFI-settings on the modem directly to create another WLAN and connect my iphone to that network, the connections is stable again. The problem is just that the range of my modem is not as good as that of the airport extreme.
While it works fine in most of the house, in the bedroom my iphone receives 1 bar of signal. It however receives 3 bars on the airport-extreme network.. but as mentioned: with instable internet.
    Help required
I can't seem to locate what the problem is. It's easy to suggest it's my iphone that is somehow broken, but then it's fairly odd that the problem is limited to only my airport extreme WLAN network. Yet, if the problem is with the WLAN network than why is it the only device that has trouble connecting to it.
Hopefully someone has a suggestion to what could be the problem and a way to solve it?

I have nearly the same issue.  Using your template here is my situation.
    Situation
I have the strangest situation. In my setup, every device connects just fine with the WLAN. Yet, one iPad Retina is for periods of time losing internet connection whilst still connected to the WLAN.  Most often it happens on the YouTube app or downloading app updates.
    Setup
I have my airport extreme connected to a comcast cable modem with no wifi (so airport extreme only).
All but one device have no trouble connecting (it's funny how close our situation is)
The following devices operate just fine:
    Mac Pro 1 [wireless]
    Mac Pro 2 [wireless]
Playstation 3 [wired into airport extreme]
    Mac Air [wireless]
    my girlfriend's iphone 4s
    my iphone 5
    Apple TV [wireless]
    my iPad Retina (only issue)
The problem occurs solely on my iPad Retina.
    Oddities
When the iPad is not working, all the other devices (phones included) work fine.
The connection with the WLAN is never lost; I can communicate with other devices on the same LAN, it's just the internet that's not working for periods of time.
    Workarounds
My iPad is 4G so if I turn off wi-fi it works fine over 4g.  NOTE:  I HAD THE GENIUS BAR REPLACE THE IPAD LAST WEEK.  NO CHANGE....
BECAUSE I CHANGED OUT MY IPAD, I THINK IT MAY BE AIRPORT RELATED BUT CANNOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM EITHER.
....I feel just a bit better that I'm not the only one.

  • Internet Speeds drop drastically on all devices when one device is streaming media

As described in the title, when one of the devices on my home network begins streaming media, speeds are drastically reduced across all of the devices.
Comcast has always stated that you can do whatever you want on any device without it affecting the other devices in your home.... but streaming on one device brings all the other devices in my home to a crawl.
This was always the one thing that set Comcast apart from AT&T in my opinion, and if this is no longer the case, then Comcast can say goodbye to my subscription.
I am paying the extra $10/mo for Blast internet also.... and this is completely unacceptable.

exactly the same experience here, installed the xfinity app on an ipad, and when someone is streaming to said IPAD from the xfinity app, the other wireless connections in the house become practically unusable.  Even wired connections to the modem/router itself start lagging out. Even something simple as looking at a forum and making a post is almost impossible if someone is streaming a t.v. show. Clearly not what is advertised. Really dissappointed.

  • Only one device connecting to the internet?

Lost power from Hurricane Sandy, internet would not come back online, replaced the cable modem, now one laptop connects to the internet but not the other computers or iPhones or iPad.  Comcast is USELESS (most polite description I have for them).
My Airport Extreme shows Excellent quality on all devices connected to it, but the Internet (brand new cable modem Motorola SB5120) shows yellow, connection: Disconnected, but does have a router address for all but one computer which is able to connect to the internet via this network.  I have restarted, rebooted, and reconfigured my network.  Why is one device able to connect but no others?  What are my troubleshooting options?
    Thank you!

Only one device (the laptop) can connect to the Internet?
    Or
Only one device at a time can connect to the Internet?
Power off the laptop that can connect
Power off the cable modem and AirPort Extreme as well
    Wait 5-10 minutes
Power up the modem first and let it run a few minutes by itself
Power up the AirPort Extreme next the same way
Power up the iPad and see if it can connect to the Internet
    Post back on your results

  • Unable to connect more than one device

    Hi.
We have copper Broadband with a fairly decent speed (13MB) and a HH3.
I run a desktop PC for general internet access but my wife uses an iPad and is always downloading films, music etc. We also have a BT Vision box which is connected via Ethernet direct to the HH3 (there are no issues at all with the Vision).
The hub is located centrally within very close range of the devices with no major structures blocking the path, indeed wireless strength is excellent.
For a long time now it has been the case that with one of us on, the other cannot use their device as the connection is either too slow or it actually knocks the other off-line. I used to run an Ethernet connection for my PC (my wife is wireless) but having read that the HH3 does not like mixed connections I bought a wireless dongle which initially seemed to help but now we are back to where we started.
Re-starting the hub sometimes seems to help but not always and might just be a coincidence.
Obviously it is very inconveniant being able to only use one device at a time.
Does this sound like a hub issue?

It could be a faulty hub because the HH3 should be able to handle multiple connections of both wireless and Ethernet without problem.
The first thing do do is try a factory reset of the homehub by pressing a pin into the recess button on the rear for about 20 seconds which can often sort out configuration problems.

  • Can't connect more than one device.

I just bought an Airport Express 2 gen from a friend and I have two issues: I tried to reset it to factory settings and could not do it. Tried holding the reset button for 10 secs, unplugging and plugging back in while holding the reset button, holding the button for a longer time and nothing worked. I had no choice but to create another network. Once created, I can't connect more than one device. If I have my MacAir hooked up the network and I try to get my Ipad in, the minute I type the network pass in my Ipad, a screen pops up where I have to log in with my internet provider account. When I do that, it will connect, but my MacAir will disconnect automatically.
    Appreciate any help!

Things are a bit different with the 2nd Gen AirPort Express and other newer AirPorts.
A Factory Default Reset is now the same as what was previously known as a "Hard Reset".
Power up the AirPort Express and let it run a few minutes.
Hold in the reset button on the Express for 10 seconds
Release the reset button and allow a full minute for the Express to restart to a slow, blinking amber light
If the Express is operating correctly, it will be back to factory default settings at this time.
If you try the reset a few times and the Express will not return to default settings, the Express is defective.

I'm having a problem with really slow internet on Arch, but it's working really fast and smooth on Windows. This started to happen once i moved my old HDD to a new built computer, so i wouldn't have to reformat etc. (Now i have reformatted and also tried Debian, same thing there and now)

I have a wireless N server (belkin) which I now have only sending out G to help.
any thoughts appreciated. so sorry to bother you. hope you are well!

p.s. is my airport card a wireless G or B?

There's no reason you should have slow connectivity with that Mac, but you haven't given any details about how your internet connection is set up, what you're using for DNS, etc. There are plenty of hints for how to fix your Internet connection in Leopard in these forums. You might start by manually entering an openDNS server to replace the one you're using and see if DNS resolution is the problem.
