Slow internet speed at peak time

I signed up for 25Mb/25Mb Fios internet service. Most time the speed is reliable, however, during the peak time, in particular at evening time, the speed dropped significantly. The download speed was less than 5Mb last night. We live in a single family residential area, the housing dentisty is fairly low. I don't know this is a common issue to most users out there, or Verizon intentionally control user speed...Your input is greatly appreciated.

  • Slow network speed during peak times

I have begun experiencing very slow network speeds in the evening.  My Mifi and other devices go from routinely getting 10 MBS down to 1 MBS in the evening.   Is there any way to address this?

        Rickrdn1,
Thank you for all of the detailed information.  The coverage in the area looks great.  All of your devices seem to drop in speeds at the same time?  How is voice and text working during these times?  The coverage in the area looks great, but can still be affected by congestion at peak times of usage. We may want to investigate your area further with a remedy ticket.

  • Slow internet speeds and dropping connection

hello, I am making this post on behalf of my dad, for a good few months (5-6 maybe even longer) we have been experiencing slow internet speeds and a dropping connection when ever the phone is picked up. when an incoming call is answered some or all devices connected to the internet drop out for a second then come back online, the connection does not completly disapear but causes any voice chat, streaming or gaming to disconect. We have BT wireless phones (not sure what exact type) which we have had for a few years. they are connected through an ADSL filter which as far i can remember has been there for years. We have a netgear DG834GT router which has also been there for a few years. I went onto its settings and got this information, not sure if its usefull or not.

I also got this from the BTW speed tester
    1. Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
    Download  Speed
    1.24 Mbps
    0 Mbps
    2 Mbps

For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 0.4 Mbps-2 Mbps.
     Additional Information:
     Your DSL Connection Rate :1.76 Mbps(DOWN-STREAM), 0.45 Mbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 1.25 Mbps
I hope this is enough information to figure out what is going on with it.

put everything back as it was and this is what it looks like now:

  • Slow internet speed -upgraded it to highest speed

I have had FiOS internet for about four years and never questioned the speed 10/2, but I had it plugged into the router.  On 3/4, I upgraded to TV FiOS/internet and phone bundle.  I do not have my computer where the router is located now (downstairs) and I had asked them to move it upstairs, but left before they had done it.  When I checked the speed (I guess the wireless speed since it is not plugged in to the router), it was 15.66/10 mbps.  I ordered the 35/35 mbps speed bundle.  I called Verizon and asked them about it and she checked the speed and said that it was "pretty good" considering it is wireless.  What?  I am not getting what I am paying for.  Do I need a DSL filter on all the phone lines?  Do I need a new router (I still have the old one)?  I have read on the community here that everyone has called several times to get an answer to the slow internet speed problem. Does anyone have the 35/35 mbps speed plan and have it work at this speed? I might as well go down to the 15 or 25 plan if that speed is all I am every going to get......But maybe if I go down to 25 plan, I'll get 10 or 15...... I will continue to try and work with Verizon to get this solved.   .Thanks for any help.

  • Slow internet speed, being used by unknown websites

    Hello all,
For about a month i have been experiencing slower internet speeds than usual. Contacted the isp and went through all the processes and there was not a problem at their end. I was advised to go to network utility and check how many processes there were, found out that there was too many to count.
It seems i have internet processes coming from my macbook ip address from uknown sources such as ookla.com etc. Now i have downloaded spyware programs for mac which have failed to find any viruses or spyware at all.
Now i know the problem is coming from my macbook as the unwanted guests our appearing under the macbook ip address, my router is receiving the right speed so it can't be the isp?
Right now i am just wondering what to do to stop these processes using up my internet connection and potentially turning my router into a server.
    Any help would be grateful.
    Mark Lees

Yeah i have little snitch but it appears to not spot these websites, i can send you a screenie of the netstat screen
Then that would imply the only connections going out from your mac are from legitimate applications.
lots of things will engage outbound connections.
    safari
    firefox
    itunes
    spotify
and sites that you visit that have embedded video often host the video on other servers. So you would be suprised at how many socket connections you have at anyone time.
If you have little snitch look at the monitor window and it will show all the recent connections.
You could reset little snitch to default rules and then you will be prompted to allow or deny each new connection.

  • Slow internet speed - terrible service

For the last 5 weeks I have been plagued with very slow internet speed. I have spent at least 4 hours on the phone with verizon techs. They always say that they will call back and never do. This is absolutely the worst service imaginable.

Step one: Visit http://www.giganews.com/line_info.html and post up the Traceroute the page shows, if you wish. Be aware that your non-bogan public IP Address will show up.  It might shown up as the final hop (bottom-most line of the trace)  might contain a hop with your IP address in it. Either remove that line or show only the first two octets. What I'm looking for is a line that mentions "ERX" in it's name towards the end. If for some reason the trace does not complete (two lines full of Stars), keep the trace route intact.
For example this what I saw when I was using Verizon
    news.giganews.com
traceroute to 71.242.*.* (71.242.*.*), 30 hops max, 60 byte packets
        1 gw1-g-vlan201.dca.giganews.com (216.196.98.4) 13 ms 13 ms 13 ms
        2 ash-bb1-link.telia.net (213.248.70.241) 39 ms 7 ms 7 ms
        3 TenGigE0-2-0-0.GW1.IAD8.ALTER.NET (63.125.125.41) 4 ms 4 ms GigabitEthernet2-0-0.GW8.IAD8.ALTER.NET (63.65.76.189) 4 ms
        4 so-7-1-0-0.PHIL-CORE-RTR1.verizon-gni.net (130.81.20.137) 6 ms 6 ms 6 ms
        5 P3-0-0.PHIL-DSL-RTR11.verizon-gni.net (130.81.13.170) 6 ms 6 ms 6 ms
        6 static-71-242-*-*.phlapa.east.verizon.net (71.242.*.*) 32 ms 32 ms 33 ms
Step two: Can you provide the Transceiver Statistics from your modem?
#3 If you don't know how to get that info:
    a) What is the brand and model of your modem?
    b) If you have a RJ-45 WAN port router connected to it: What is the brand and model of the RJ-45 WAN port router?
#4 If you have a RJ-45 WAN port router connected to the modem, even if you know how to get the Transceiver Statistics from the modem: What is the brand and model of the RJ-45 WAN port router?

  • Painfully slow internet speed, even during off-pea...

I have BT Home Hub, I share a house with 3 other students and we are all on the internet 24/7. Been here for a year and it's never been a problem, apart from the monthly emails from BT telling us we are over using our "unlimited" download policy (fair usage and all that) and warnings that they are limiting us to 1Mbps during peak times.
Not that this matters because my speed is below 1 during peak times anyway. I would welcome 1Mbps.
Anyway, none of this really bothered me. But in the past week or so my connection speed has been running between 0.1 and 0.4Mbps all the time. Be it 4pm, or 2am. It's beyond slow. And I don't know what the cause is.

your connection as in your wifi link or your connection as in your routers sync or just the achievable download speed from a server, or your download speed under best effort from a speedtester?
it might sound pedantic but its can be quite important.

  • Slow internet speed/ dropping internet

I am on the Bt Ifinity 2,  last year at summer time (8/10/2014) every thing was fine 59 mb/s down 19.55 mb/s up. bettween then and the 11/11/2014 speeds fell to 13.8mb/s down 10.24mb/s up. (mediafire link for page download for internet speeds http://www.mediafire.com/download/24vs7ra8pyl09qc/bt+stats.rar )
during this time untill the 19/11/2014 the internet would just drop randomly, 3,5,6 times a day commonly (not shown on the graph for due to no internet). the internet droped and the router was not connected to the internet shown by the ui in 192.168.1.254. internet speed is lower then the what was on the speed test so would strugle to steam youtube videos.
i thought that this was a throtling thing origionaly, but i tryed off peak time 1-4 AM the connection dropped slow speeds
we called a bt enginer out for the 19/11/2014 we a router replacement and some line was changed there was no internet dropping untill reasontly speeds increased slightly.
8/1/2015 I was downloading addons for battlefeild on my playstaion when the internet started dropping again the internet speed on speedtest.net showed a resonable speed of 30mb/s down 1.97mb/s up which should be fine for content consumption. well thats what i thought, youtube videos in 240p would not play.
in my oppinion it looks like bt has being throtiling my traffic, but i know bt only "manages p2p taffic during peak times"
any one know whats wrong, by the way there is know other users on the network at the time of the speed tests
    Thanks for reading

Next time your speeds are bad, or right now if they are now, please try this:
In order to rule out the Homehub as potentially being the device responsible for your speed loss, you can connect the Openreach modem directly to the PC and see if the speed improves.
To do that follow these steps:
Step 1: Remove the homehub from the modem cable
Step2: Connect your pc/laptop to the modem via the cable instead
Step3: Open network and sharing centre on windows and click set up a new connection or network
Step4: Connect to the internet then click make a new connection Broadband PPPoE
Step5: Username [email protected] and the password as BT
Step6: connect, If it doesn't,keep pressing try again until it does.
However, please note that this will stop any other access apart from the PC

  • Internet dropping at Peak Time, I'm being throttle...

    Hello
To put some context to this we've had problems for a while now with our internet and the connection dropping and being slow during peak times. I've recently been informed of throttling that can occur during peak times to high usage users. I'd qualify as a high usage user but as my package is Unlimited and the fair use policy has been abolished last year, thus I should not be getting throttled as I most definitely am. I have run tests and know enough about IT to know that this is the case but yet whenever I speak to someone over the phone (which I have done many times) they are not able to help me and tell me to do go through the same motions and state that there is nothing wrong with the line. I have been unable to get the throttling turned off over the phone and it's just infuriating now. To clarify I've had this package since before 2013 and as such my deduction is that the my P2P download speed is still being capped.
Can a moderator on these forums help me with this problem?

welcome to the BT community forum where customers help customers and only BT employees are the forum mods
in order for the forum members to help please can you post the adsl stats from your router you may need to 'show detail' to get all stats (if hub enter 192.168.1.254 in your browser and navigate to adsl or if HH4/5 then go to troubleshooting then logs and you are looking for 2 line together when hub last connected to internet and they will show your connection speed and noise margin or if netgear enter 192.168.0.1). Then run  btspeedtester  (MAC users may have problems). when first test completes then run diagnostic test and post the results ( do not reset the router).
If you have not renewed your contract since 2012 then it is possible you still have the p2p in your t&c. Run the gkasnost test and check.  It would be worth renewing your contract as you may be paying more than necessary for your broadband
    http://broadband.mpi-sws.org/transparency/bttest.php
are you connected directly via a filter to the NTE5 master or test socket or to somewhere else? Is the master the only phone socket in your home?
Have you tried the quiet line test? - dial 17070 option 2 - should hear nothing - best done with a corded phone. if cordless phone you may hear a 'dull hum' which is normal
Someone may then be able to offer help/assistance/suggestions to your problem

  • Absurdly slow internet speeds and often unable to ...

I'm used to getting around 13 Mbps Internet speeds from BT.
In the last few days, although the speed tests show similar results (assuming I can actually get online to test them), Internet browsing has become painfully slow, with many pages simply not loading at all.
I've called BT, and been through some tests with them, and they assure me that everything is fine, and that my Internet speeds are as high as ever.
I've also done some hunting around on google, and tried using open DNS settings, but to no avail. It's especially hard to upload data, and it's almost impossible to send email.
Occasionally, if I turn on my Mac after a longish break, I can get online easily, and send e-mail for a few minutes, then the problem returns.
BT insist that there's nothing wrong with the line, but the fact that the problem affects both my Mac and my iPad suggests that the problem is not with my computer.
Indeed, I'm now in the local pub, and everything is working just fine.
I've been through all the usual things - checking location of Homehub (even though it was absolutely fine for 18 months in its current location), changed the ADSL micro-filter, changed the wireless channel, etc, and to no avail.
    What else can anyone suggest?
    Thank you.

So, the first time I did this speed-test was on my return home, when everything was working fine again.

  • Two problems, disconnecting and extremely slow internet at a certain time of the day.

My first problem started to occur since the beginning of this year, after I've upgraded from 1MB/s to 3MB/s. EVERYDAY at 2:39 PM EST or sometime around there, my internet would disconnect (most common at 2:39). It would take some 5-20 minutes to reconnect by itself. I go to 192.168.1.1 and go to broadband connection and press disconnect, then reconnect to get myself back on asap. It would take me a few tries disconnecting and connecting to get the internet back up. I probably do disconnect during other times of the day, such as night time but I don't notice it as much because I am not using the computer at the time.
My second problem is slow download speed at night. As I said, I have a 3000/667 kb/s connection. My internet connection speed is normal during the day time .. but when I ran a speed test during night time, I get around 333 kb/s download and 600 kb/s upload. So, my download speed drops significantly at night and my upload speed is normal.
I am using a D90-327W15-06 modem and I am not using a wireless connection.
    Margin (dB) 14.5 11.0
    Line Attenuation (dB) 40.0 23.0
    Transmit Power (dBm) 18.4 11.9
Don't know if that information helps ..
P.S Sorry if this is a lot to read, I wanted it to be as much detailed as possible.

#1 Is wireless in the router enabled?
#2 If so, to question number one above: What level of wireless security is it set to ( WEP / WPA )?
#3 Did you try connecting your modem to the NID?
If not, please do that - and recheck those stats.
If you do not what a NID is, see http://www.dslreports.com/faq/1317

  • Windows 7 64 Bit Very VERY slow internet speed

I just bought two new laptops for my wife and I and we've been having terrible trouble with download speeds since taking them out the box.
We are using the exact same configuration and IP as before only our last two computers were on XP and Vista but there were no issues whatsoever. I even went and bought a new router just in case that was the problem but it made absolutely no difference, leaving
me with the conclusion its a problem with the 64 bit version of Windows 7.
Currently I cannot even watch a Youtube video because after loading the first couple of seconds, it stops loading and then after a couple of minutes there's a quick burst of speed and stops again.
I can't complete a speed test on my connection on either laptop. Normally this would take only a few seconds but the site (speedtest.net) crashes every time using windows 7.
    Setup;
    Windows 7 64Bit
    Intel i3 2310M @ 2.1Ghz
    4Gb of RAM
My IP is VirginMedia UK on a 10Mb connection (same problem wired or wireless)
As you can imagine this is very frustrating since I have just paid out over £1000 to find my browsing experience has virtually at a stand still.
Any help in this matter would be very much appreciated

I recently had the same problem after installing Windows 7 64bit.  The internet speed for some reason was really slow.  After looking for a solution I tried to flush the DNS.  It worked.
    Open start menu
type "cmd" in the search then hit enter key
when the new screen opens type:
    ipconfig /release
     hit enter and then type
    ipconfig /flushdns
    hit enter and then type
    ipconfig /renew
hit enter and the problem is solved.

  • Win 7 on bootcamp partition, very slow internet speed

    hi!
it might be an answer to my problem somewhere on this forum, but
right now i do not have the time to browse through - so ill just post my problem quick and simple.
im running windows 7 ultimate on a intel imac, via bootcamp. the issue is simple, yet pretty annoying.
in iOS, my internet speed is great, as it should be (my bandwidth is 12/12 mbit).
but in windows 7, for some reason (been like this ever since install) things are going SO slow.
i mean, watching videos on youtube is a nightmare, every 3 second at lowest quality possible, it still
has to buffer. same goes for other streaming sites/services. downloading usually does not exceed 300 kb/ps, but in
ios this could easily hit 1,5 mb/ps.
if i listen to music on say grooveshark (adjusted to lowest quality) the music stops to buffer if i load a different webpage. its that bad.
ive taken a bandwidth check in windows and in iOS, and in iOS the speed is normal, in windows its 1/10th of what it should be.
anyone know why this problem persists?
as i know of, windows 7 doesnt have any bandwidth limiting of default.
so i thought it might be a windows 7/imac hardware conflict. help?

Hi, I'm having the same problem.
    I installed win8.1(64bit) on a iMac7,1 20inch(mid 2007) using Winclone.
Everything was working fine after I downloaded some driverhelper and installed those drivers.
Yet the internet on Win8.1 is very slow, the download speed is merely 60-100kb/s .
While if I open the Mac system, the same resource can easily to beyong 2MB/s.
As I have 25Mb/10Mb connection at home.
I'm new here , don't know exactly what driver I need to fix this problem.
    Try to install boot camp.
However, I tried 5.0 / 4.0 , it all said bootcamp x64 is not supported on this computer model.
Don't know where i can download the bootcampe 3.0 to have a try ?
Or is it just too old iMac to be fixed?

  • PC to Mac - slower internet speed?

I have just purchased my first mac (entry level imac 17"). I love the computer and the operating system. However, the internet speed is extremely slow (almost like dial up). I have a pc and a mac, both running off the same connection. The mac is significantly slower surfing the exact sames sites. It's not a cache issue or anything like that. The mac is just slow. I have tried both the wireless and ethernet connections and it's slow either way. I have tried downloading Firefox and that doesn't seem to make a difference either.
    Any help?
    Thanks

    Clint,
Have you tried using the "Automatic" setting that you first saw after setup? Unless you made changes to it, I'd imagine it's still in effect, just not active since you're now using another "Location:" setting. Or, was that "Automatic" setup too slow as well?
If you'd like to try yet again, using the same basics as included in the Network Setup Assistant, but with more stringent settings:))
There's no need to dump any of your current setups that already work - at System Preferences>Network in the "Location:" selector simply use "New Location..." to name yourself yet another new setup (perhaps "wireless Feb 11") and proceed:
Set the "Show:" selector to "AirPort" and choose the "TCP/IP" pane. Check that "Configure IPv4:" is set as "Using DHCP." No other settings are necessary on that preference pane. If you make any change, be sure to click the "Apply Now" button before leaving that preference pane.
Switching from the "TCP/IP" pane to the "PPPoE" pane, if the isp connection settings are already held within your wireless router, which I think they most likely are, the "Connect using PPoE" box should not be checked. There would also be no need to have checked the box "Show PPPoE status in menu bar." If you make any change, again be sure to click the "Apply Now" button before leaving that preference pane.
Now switching from the "PPPoE" pane to the "AirPort" pane, have the box "Show AirPort status in menu bar" checked, and I suggest setting the "By default, join:" selector to "Preferred networks." Eliminate all other networks listed [remember, you'll only be eliminating them from this new location setup, not from your other, already working "location" setups], then add your wireless network security method, name and password to the preferred networks list, and click the "Apply Now" button.
Then within the "Options..." button, I would set the "If no preferred networks are found:" selector to "Keep looking for recent networks" and check the box "Require administrator password to Change wireless networks." I would definitely NOT check the "Automatically add new networks" box. Click the "OK" button and again the "Apply Now" button.
Now switch the "Show:" selector from "AirPort" to "Network Port Configurations" and drag the activated "AirPort" configuration to the top of the list. Once again click the "Apply Now" button.
Even with this new setup now activated, when you open the menu bar AirPort icon you will continue to see the other wireless networks in your area that are visible to your AirPort - but you won't have to worry about them confusing your Network connection, as it will no longer be considering them.
To return to one of your previous connection setups, simply switch the "Location:" selector to the one you want to use, and click the "Apply Now" button. The new setup just completed will remain unchanged in the "Location:" selector under the new name chosen.
Now, in the "Location:" selector name a second "New Location..." (such as "enet to router Feb 11") - this will be for ethernet access to your router.
Set "Show:" to "Built-in Ethernet" and select the "TCP/IP" pane. Check that "Configure IPv4:" is set as "Using DHCP." No other settings are necessary on that pane. If you make any change, be sure to click the "Apply Now" button before leaving that preference pane.
Switching from the TCP/IP pane to the PPPoE pane, if the isp connection settings are already held within your wireless router, which I think they most likely are, the "Connect using PPoE" box should not be checked. There would also be no need to have checked the box "Show PPPoE status in menu bar." If you make any change, again be sure to click the "Apply Now" button before leaving that preference pane.
Now switching from the "PPPoE" pane to the "Ethernet" pane, check that the "Configure:" selector is set to "Automatically" and if any change is made, click the "Apply Now" button.
Now switch the "Show:" selector from "Built-in Ethernet" to "Network Port Configurations" and drag the activated "Built-in Ethernet" configuration to the top of the list. Then drag the activated "AirPort" configuration to the position immediately under "Built-in Ethernet." Once again click the "Apply Now" button and that new setup is completed and activated. Your iMac will be connected to the router by ethernet and at the same time can use wireless to connect to a wireless printer or to another wireless computer.
After both new setups are in place, I suggest to boot from your Install Disc 1, get past the first (language selection) screen, and (after fully loading) the second screen will contain a "Utilities" pull-down in the menu bar. Open and select Disk Utility. On the left side of the box, select the top-most drive shown, on the right side select "First Aid" and then click the "Verify Disk" or "Repair Disk" button. Allow to run to completion. Run a second time to be sure. Do not run Disk Permissions Repairs, but instead quit the installer version of Disk Utility, quit the installer process, and restart to your usual startup disk, which you can re-select using "Startup Disk" also located in the "Utilities" pull-down where you found Disk Utility. After restarting, Repair Disk Permissions in a similar manner after opening the version of Disk Utility located in your Applications>Utilites folder.
Please don't hesitate to let me know the results of the above series of recommendations.
However, if all that doesn't make for some improvement, I'd think you'd want to check with your router maker's website (or the router supplier's website if it was supplied by your isp) to see if there's a firmware update that might be applied to your router. Such an update might help your router's encryption capabilities, or might provide updated Mac support for the Intel-based Macs.
Beyond that, I'd be calling AppleCare for support with your connection, since you're still within the 90 days of AppleCare phone support that is part of your new Mac purchase.
