Slow Internet/ Wireless Problems

I have had a black macbook for two months now, and have been having wireless problems. I put it next to my powerbook aluminum and the macbook shows a flashing wireless network (going in and out really quickly). Sometimes I also see the network but can't go to any websites, must either sleep it or renew DHCP. The internet has also been much slower than the aluminum. Any suggestions? SImilar problems?

hey there,
i'm going to copy and paste here as i've tried to resolve this a few different times with no joy!
when websurfing,it can take up a minute and a half for a page to open...i use wirless in my house so that could be the issue..when i brought it into uni it was pretty much instantaneous, obviously there are alot of hot spots there,so that made sense...but i tried it in my brothers house(wireless)i put it right beside his 3 year old laptop(siemens fujitsu)both computers about 15 metres away from the router...my brothers worked at top speed...my brand new MB went at a snails pace:(....is this normal???i have tried it with safari and mozilla same result,i'm careful to empty cache pretty much after every use...i've tried it whilst making sure nothing else was running and still its super slow!!is ther anything i can do/buy/download that may help me increase my speed..i do alot of online research so fast internet is really important for me...
pleasse help!

  • Slow internet (wireless)

I have a MacBook Pro laptop running Mac OSX on one partition and Windows XP on the 2nd partition.
I am connected to the internet through a wireless DLINK router.
Very strangely, the internet runs fine (ie. quickly) when the laptop is booted to Windows XP, however it is PAINFULLY slow in Mac OSX! It seems to stall for 10 sec. before it will connect to any page on the internet. It goes especially slow when connecting to a page that includes advertisements.
    Any ideas?
If I go back to one operating system on the laptop (Mac OSX) the internet runs fine.
    Strange!

I think Gnarly has nailed it, and if so... deserves a Star of some kind... I only point this out, as most everybody since Christmas thinks Santa Claus works here... and no recognition is needed!

  • T61p Very Slow Internet, Wireless Intel Card, Please Help!

I have a brand new t61p. it has 4 gb ram 2.5ghz processor and i have windows xp pro which i downgraded from vista too. I have the intel wifi link 4965 agn. My router is a linksys 2.4ghz 802.11b. I know that this is outdated but, i have 3 other computers. 2 Pc's one wireless and the other hardwire. i also have one other old dell laptop with a wireless card that only supports 802.11b. I go to speakeasy.net and i have ran the speed test on all 4 computers. the average for the 3 computers(not the t61p) is 2800kpbs. i should supposbly have 3000kbps according to verizion but that doesnt matter. Anyways when i run the lenovo on the speakeasy website the highest download rate i got was 1000kbps. genrelly its around 700kbps. I have made sure all computers have Excellent signal 100%. I noticed the laptop was slow using the internet on downloads and even web browsing and its a fairly big difference from the others. I feel like something is restricting my t61p. Please please please help me! if you need anymore info i will get it.

  • MacBook Pro, Lion and slow internet

I upgraded to Lion yesterday to see if it resolves a persistent slow internet connectivity problem but unfortunately to no effect.
    Symptoms are:
slow connectivity / download on both wireless and wired connections.
Compared to my Alienware Windows laptop, the MacBook achieves less than 10% of the downoad and upload speed in either state
Speed has been checked on many sites including speedtest.net  - practically, connection is sluggish for both web and non-web internet use.
Ping to sites is identical on the Macbook Pro and my windows machine. There is no drop of ping or excessive variation.
The issue is independant of browser - Firefox, Safari, etc
I have a BT 40MB infinity connection at home and a 10MB uncontended leased line connection at work - the issue exists wired or wireless in both arenas
I can achieve download speeds of around 38 Mbps on my Alienware, wired, and 17 Mbps wireless. This compares to less than 2 Mbps on the Macbook Pro
The condition started under Snow Leopard about 4 weeks ago - unsure if it was after a routine upgrade
Following advice on these boards I have tried changing DNS to various open DNS, with no success
I have tried altering the mtu settings as directed, with no impact
The issue is therefore independant of router, internet provider ( I have access to three), wired or wireless connectivity. It also preexisted the Lion upgrade
I know there are other, similar threads on here, but my symptoms are different (no drop of ping, not just a wireless issue, multiple networks)
Any suggestions or recommendations would be welcome.
    Cheers

Thanks for advise but now resolved.
Being paranoid and from a Windows background I had put an anti-virus program on - Sophos. Frankly I had forgotten about it. Turing it off resulted in a 1000% improvement in my internet speed. Who would have known?
OK I should have guessed a little earlier.
    Cheers

  • Slow internet speed -upgraded it to highest speed

I have had FiOS internet for about four years and never questioned the speed 10/2, but I had it plugged into the router.  On 3/4, I upgraded to TV FiOS/internet and phone bundle.  I do not have my computer where the router is located now (downstairs) and I had asked them to move it upstairs, but left before they had done it.  When I checked the speed (I guess the wireless speed since it is not plugged in to the router), it was 15.66/10 mbps.  I ordered the 35/35 mbps speed bundle.  I called Verizon and asked them about it and she checked the speed and said that it was "pretty good" considering it is wireless.  What?  I am not getting what I am paying for.  Do I need a DSL filter on all the phone lines?  Do I need a new router (I still have the old one)?  I have read on the community here that everyone has called several times to get an answer to the slow internet speed problem. Does anyone have the 35/35 mbps speed plan and have it work at this speed? I might as well go down to the 15 or 25 plan if that speed is all I am every going to get......But maybe if I go down to 25 plan, I'll get 10 or 15...... I will continue to try and work with Verizon to get this solved.   .Thanks for any help.

  • Who can help to live, or slow internet and large packages

I have slow internet(mobile gprs 10 kBytes/s). Updating packages like "kde-wallpapers" or "kdeartwork-wallpapers" take a long time despite the fact that the contents of the package no major changes. If you do a binary diff, for example on the "oxygen-icons" you can only download about ~300 kilobytes. Can support in the pacman binary diffs of packages, and on the server generating diff`s of these files by utility xdelta3? Or make it a separate utility (such as yaourt) which will download the differences and generate packets, and pacman will install it.
Who now cant help me, please generate diffs(from testing kde 4.9)

  • Slower internet connection when connection wireless network

Currently using a Linksys WRT54GL wireless broadband (firmware v4.30.5) router in conjunction with a Thomson Speedtouch 546i ADSL router (ISP provided).
My problem is that when I connect to the internet over the wireless network I experience a much slower internet connection in comparison with when I use a tp-cable.
Tested with various online "speed-tests" (I know they are not to be trusted, but they do give a basis for comparison):
    Over wireless network : ca.6000kbits/sec.
Direct cable from pc to router (tested on both routers):12-13000kbits/sec.
Hope anyone has any idea what the problem may be, and any help is greatly appreciated.

Change the beacon to 50 ....and reduce the RTS and the fragmentation by 40 each.....these options are found under the advanced wireless settings...
Also make sure that u have the latest drivers installed for the Wireless NIC.

  • SLOW internet while streaming??  Anyone else have this problem??

I've looked everywhere and I can't seem to find anyone that has this problem:
I have an appleTV using 802.11N on a gigabit AEBS, with a core2duo macbook pro. Here's the funny part. It syncs beautifully fast without a hitch. No dropouts or anything. However, while it's syncing, all internet connectivity on my macbook pro is entirely cut off! Websites won't load, email won't send, ichat logs out, everything just goes down to a crawl, meanwhile the appletv syncs very fast. I've tested to make sure the internet connection isn't down by surfing on my iPhone and my mom's imac, and they both have fine internet connectivity while the appletv is syncing.
I've also tested the network speed to and from the airdisk. I assumed if it was my macbook pro's airport card that maybe when it goes really fast, it doesn't allow other traffic. Well, I moved big files back and forth through the airdisk at high speeds and internet seems fine. It's only when it's between the appletv and the macbook pro that the internet breaks...
I also tried it through an airport express with 802.11g and slower network speeds with the same result, so that rules out the base station.
Has anyone else had this problem? It's so frustrating because I have been forced to turn off appletv syncing entirely!

Well I know when syncing my iPhone, I have issues with internet speed on my Laptop (windows based) and also I cannot check email (fails to connect). Once syncing is done, mail works fine and I am browsing at full speed again.
I can only assume the sync process itself on the machine it is on is the issue. I figured it was just gonna be more so for Windows machines as iTunes on Windows is a huge resource hog when doing anything (downloading podcasts, syncing, etc). I just figured my slow internet access was more about iTunes bringing windows to a crawl during the sync and as for email assumed the sync process hoses what ports I can get out on.
Nice to see it messes with Mac users as well
Not sure why you have to turn off syncing entirely though. Won't it only do a sync if something changes? Mine doesn't sit there always sycning.

  • RG54G2 Wireless Router Internet Connection Problem

    Hi,
(apologies for the long message - trying to cover all details - summary: wireless router often drops internet connection)
I recently bought an RG54G2 Wireless Router, a CB54G2 PCMCIA Wireless card and a D-Link GWL-630 PCMCIA Wireless card.  In addition to two laptops connected to the wireless router WLAN, I have two PCs (one Win WP Pro SP 1 and one Win98SE) connected to the router via wired LAN.  I also have a SurfBoard SB3100 Cable Modem connected to the WAN port (this connects to my ISP -  Optusnet (Australia) via DHCP).
The problem I have is that the internet connection is disconnected many times a day (often every few minutes, sometimes an hour or so).  I am able to reconnect by resetting the wireless router via the wireless router configuration page.  When the internet is disconnected I am still able to access the computers on the LAN/WLAN (via Windows Explorer and Ping), I am also able to ping the router and the Cable Modem, but nothing outside of the cable modem.
Also, when the internet is disconnected the System Status page indicates that the router is still connected to the internet, and the Diagnostics page passes the Test Connection test, though no external pings work.
I did not have this problem when the cable modem was connected directly to the Win98SE PC (and other PCs via ICS).
I have disabled the WLAN and the problem still exists with only the wired LAN.
I have changed numerous settings in the wireless router config page with no success (eg disabling DHCP and setting each IP address, minimising LAN and WLAN speeds to 10 and 11MBps plus others).
I have upgraded the wireless router firmware to R1.0.6.0 (no change to the problem).
Searching on Google I have found several other cases of routers with unstable internet connections (none refering to the MSI routers), but none had solutions that helped my situation (most replies suggested updating the firmware).
Any suggestions of how to make the router internet connection stable?
    Thanks,
    Mike

maybe this is the FIX 4 wireles router internet connection problem
please let me know if any one fix the problem with this tips
    thankz

Subject: SOLUTION to my router loosing connection to Windows XP
Reply | Reply to Author | Forward | Print | Individual Message | Show original | Report Abuse
I am happy to report that after 8 days of constant battles, reboots, phone
calls, cable pulling, router changing, it seems that I finally have found a
combination that has had me using Verizon DSL account for over 12 hours so
far without any kind of interruptions.
Since so many of you tried giving me comments and suggestions, I felt that
it is necessary for me to post this here so that the next person will not
(hopefully) need to go through this hell as I did!
My original problem was that when after I purchased a D-Link Wireless Router
DI-624, I would get disconnected from Verizon DSL at least once every 2
hours or so. My internet access would "freeze" and then a little popup box
at the bottom right system tray would tell me that the "LAN cable has been
unplugged".   After about a minute or so, my internet connection would be
back working   This was NEVER happening during the 2+ years I was using my
Westell modem alone (running in router mode).
Please keep in mind: The problem I was having was not wireless related as
it was happening to the desktop computer to which the router/westell was
    connected to!
During these last 8 days, I tried: one DI-624 wireless router, two Netgear
614v3 routers and two Linksys WRT54G v.2 routers. In addition, I received a
brand new Westell 2200 modem from Verizon.   I also tried about four
different CAT-5 cables. Here is the final outcome:
I have the Linksys WRT54G (version 2) wireless router connected to the
Netgear Fast Ethernet FA310TX network card in Auto-Sense mode (using the
built-in XP drivers, as Netgear told me that there was never a newer
revision released). I have DISABLED the built-in 3Com Gigabit LOM (3C940)
network card (via the ASUS P4C800 Deluxe motherboard BIOS), DISABLED the
Zero Wireless Configuration service, and have put in the IP/Gateway/DNS
address numbers inside my Windows XP Network Connections | LAN setup. My
operating system is Windows XP Pro SP1 and the modem is a Westell 2200
    configured as bridge only.
If my situation continues to be stable, I *might* try to go back to the 3Com
built-in card (disable any power management) and then re-enabling the Zero
Wireless Configuration services. But in reality, I am happy with the way
things are and have already spent enough time trying to get my router to
work with Verizon DSL without having it drop connections!
Now, the next step will be setting up the WIRELESS part of this. I don't
even yet have a laptop with me on the premises, but the 802.11g card that I
already have is the D-Link DWL-G650. I hope and assume that this will work
    okay with the Linksys...
One thing I must say is that I never realized that how many problems other
users are having. I would have thought that since 802.11x has been around
in the mainstream by now 2+ years, that things would have been much more
"system friendlier".   And again, my issues were not even WIRELESS related.
All 3 tech supports were not really helpful, as none of them realized that
the problem is somehow between the router and Windows XP (Ethernet card?)
loosing a connection, which of course results in Verizon DSL loosing the
    connection also.
One other comment about the Netgear 614 v.3 router: A number of people have
responded to tell me that they have had this random "router resetting"
happen to them (where the routers behaves as if someone turned the power off
and then back on, and the lights flash) just as if you first turn it on). I
was lucky to witness it myself during one of the "disconnects" that I had.
This was actually the reason why I went back to try the Linksys one more
time. So, I would definitely recommend staying way from this 614 (version
    3) model.
Once again - THANK YOU everyone!

  • Slow internet connection over ethernet, fast over wireless?!

Using an Airport Extreme (802.11n) I am connected to the internet through an X-Modem. My Macbook connects to the internet wirelessly and can download a large web page in 13 seconds, the same page takes 85 seconds when downloaded by my G4 iMac using an ethernet connection directly to the Airport (even if the MacBook is switched off).
I have eliminated the iMac as the culprit by plugging the ethernet cable directly into the modem as a test and achieving a decent connection speed.
Any bright ideas about how to solve this little connundrum?

    Glyn
Checked my Network settings as suggested. The DHCP was fine but somehow I had a specified server in the 'DNS servers' box. Cleared this and the iMac is now connecting perfectly.
Thanks to you and Duane for your hepl.

  • Rainbow spinning cursor and slow internet recently

I am not very tech savvy but I will try and describe what is going on. Recently (last week or so) my computer has been extremely slow and the rainbow spinning cursor seems to appear all the time. I notice it mainly when I am using the internet, mainly because I am mostly on the internet when I use my computer. I believe it is a problem with my computer because my husband has a 2011 MacBook Pro and he does not have any problems with his computer. My computer is a 2010 MacBook Pro, and I ran an Etre Check to see if it helps. I typically use Google Chrome as my browser (we both do) and my operating system is OS X.

  • Very slow internet after installing 10.5.3

Hello all, this is the very first time I have encountered any problems with my Macbook and I am hoping I can get some help here.
About a month ago I came home from college and hooked my Macbook up to the wireless router at home, everything was running fine. We have fiber optic internet so usually my speeds are blazing fast. Recently however I installed the 10.5.3 update and now my internet speeds are very dismal. I am having trouble getting my Macbook to connect to the router at all, much less load any web pages.
I have taken an ethernet cable and plugged my Macbook directly in to the router to see if things load any faster, and unfortunately things are still just as slow over a wired connection. After typing in a URL you will sit there at a blank web page for about 45 seconds to a minute before it even starts loading the page, and when the page does load it takes forever to pull up and images take even longer to display. If it helps at all our router is a dlink DI-524 wireless router.
I was browsing through these forums yesterday to see if I could find a solution to my issue. so far I have tried the following:
-set router to broadcast in G mode only (instead of mixed mode)
    -removed encryption from router
-tried various encryption settings (64 bit WEP, 128 bit WEP, WPA, etc)
-updated the firmware of my router
-created test account on my macbook, opened internet browser on it, everything still runs slow
-deleted cache for safari/mozilla as well as the .plist files, still slow internet
when i called apple the agent suggested putting in my os X CD and do an archive and install, i did and once i was set back to os X 10.5 i was unable to connect to wifi at all, and wired connection over ethernet seemed just as slow as before. when i check for apple updates the 10.5.3 update was my only option, i couldnt choose 10.5.2 so installing that would put me back where i was before.
in the end i set my computer up last night to do a restore from my time machine backup. my machine has been restored to the backup i created just before i tried the archive and install, so im back to running OS X 10.5.3 now.
I'm sorry this post got so long, I just wanted to make sure that I included details of what I've done so far. Again I would like to stress that I am having this problem on my macbook even with my computer hooked directly to the router with my ethernet cable. (using that same cable and hooking up any one of my windows computers in the house results in fast and effortless web browsing so i know the cable is good)

It's not a matter of Mac OS X being "picky" but rather various ISPs not keeping up with changes in the DNS standard.
In the most recent case, 10.5.3 had to revert to a previous method of performing some DNS lookups because various ISPs hadn't bothered to update their servers to handle what has been the recommended way of handling lookups for the past eight years.
OpenDNS also has done a lot of work to make sure their DNS servers work as fast as possible; ISPs have absolutely no incentive whatsoever to provide fast DNS services.

  • Slow internet connection via AirPort on MacBook running 10.5.7

The internet connection via AirPort on my MacBook is frustratingly slow, and I have no idea why.
I have an AirPort Extreme connected to a Virgin Media cable modem, a new iMac and a two year-old MacBook, both running 10.5.7. No problems at all with the wireless connection on the iMac - I get the full near-10Mbps download speed I'm paying for, despite the fact it's at the other end of the house. Not so on the MacBook, where I get barely 2Mb, even if I'm sat next to the router.
I've had other AirPort problems since the 10.5.6 update - notably one common to a lot of people on here, it seems, of the AirPort dropping the wireless connection every 2 mins. This was only 'fixed' by the fairly drastic workaround of essentially abandoning my user account and connecting via a different one.
For the slow internet problem, I've tried resetting the PRAM, turning off my cordless landline phone, changing the wireless channel - to no avail. I can't test the wired connection as my MacBook doesn't recognise my Ethernet port, it would seem, and hasn't for a long time.
Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.

I assume that you meant NVRAM as PRAM is not used with Intel-based Macs. Regardless, network settings are not stored here and resetting it won't really help. The fact that your MacBook is not recognizing the built-in Ethernet port is telling me that may have an issue with the system board ... that may be showing up as poor performance with the AirPort as well. I suggest that you take your MacBook in to your local Apple Store to have them take a look.
