Slow iPod sync with network drive

I run a small network for my home/office (I am self employed) with about 4 PCs for me and my family.
We have 3 iPods in our family and we just use one PC to host iTunes, but because we have so much music, I have put the music on a network drive served from my file server (Windows Small Business Server - Windows Server 2003 based).
There's no problem with this setup, except one:
I've noticed that when iPods sync with iTunes, it takes a very long time, perhaps 5 times as long than when I had my music files on an external hard drive directly connected to the PC on which we run iTunes.
This is fustrating. My question is: is there anything that can be done about this ?
I can't really understand why this should be an issue. iTunes has, stored in the library files on my local PC, the details of all my music files. So when my iPod syncs, surely iTunes consults the iPod and consults what is in iTunes and figures out what should change - and then and only then should iTunes need to connect to the network drive to actually get any necessary files. Is my understanding wrong of what iTunes is doing when syncing an iPod ?
The issue is that even with no changes, sync-ing is an issue.
Any help on this gratefully received - have looked in this forum and other places, but haven't managed to trawl and info on my issue.

Having been given an iPod video 60Gig as a present, I am sometimes forced to use it.
Recently I tried - I downloaded and installed latest itunes 7.5 on the PC running Windows XP.
Built up the library of music - tried to do a sync. So slow I nearly hit the PC. The transfer rate would merely get 40 Meg on in 5 minutes (thats my estimate all I know is it never finished). I tried to leave it running for 3 hours and still not finished - the size of music to transfer was about 2400 songs.
I then tried to use Vista Home Basic - with itunes 7.5 - it wouldnt even recognize the ipod.
After a few days of giving up and banging my head against the wall I tried Linux too - but that was slow too.
I eventually went back to Vista and de-installed itunes 7.5 - found version 6.05 and installed it. It went through like clockwork (well as clockwork as can be it was magically fast but fast enough to fill half of the 60Gig).
I then had the magic idea - why not update to 7.5 from 6.05 and guess what - its slow again painfully slow.
Version 7.5 *****!

  • Extremely slow ipod syncing with Music located on a NAS

    Hello,
I have been desperate to sync 3000+ MP3 songs located on my Synology ds412+ NAS Server to my ipod touch 5G (32GB) via itunes 11 and USB2.
I use a Sony Vaio laptop with windows 8 x64 and 8gb RAM.
First of all, it was very slow to add the songs folders into itunes's librairy. Itunes's media folder is in a mapped drive of the NAS.
Then prior to syncing, I went to the music tab and selected my own playlists. Itunes could not stop freezing, the blue wheel spinning and so on.
I had to wait several minutes for Itunes to get back to normal.
Finally, I managed to start the sync process. Songs are now beiing copied, but it only did 750 songs in 5 hours. Which means I would still need more than 10 hours to complete the process!
I hope some of you have experience in syncing music stored in a server.
    Thanks for your input.
    Regards,
    Ambientic

I don't believe you can do that. The convert to 128 bit only converts the songs being written to the iPod. Every time you play a song it changes (the play count goes up) so iTunes is going to go try to find those and update them every time it syncs.
I am able to disconnect my external that holds my movies and the movies remain but those are not being converted. I think that is where the problem is.
    Good luck!

  • No Sync when network drive connected

    Hello,
I have an ipod nano that won't sync through itunes when network drives are mapped.
I am not trying to sync to the network drive, but just the presence of network drives stops the nano from syncing with itunes.
As soon as I disconnect the network drives the ipod syncs with itunes fine.
I have tried this on two different computers and the same thing happens.
I am using Windows XP-sp2 with the latest itunes (6.0.4) and the latest updates for the ipod.
    Has anyone else experienced this?
    Any workarounds?
    Thank you in advance.

How many different computers can I sync my iPod with?  My laptop crashed and was completely wiped clean and this was the machine that my iPod synced with so I don't know if it will be counted as a "new" computer when I sync my iPod.

You can sync with onee at a time. Syncing to another will erase the current content.
Copy everything from your backup copy of your old computer to your new one.

  • CS 5 Bridge Downloader crashes with network drive

For the first time with CS5 I have tried "getting photos" from my camera. If I specify the destination on my local drive there is no problem. If, I specify a mapped network drive the downloader stalls, and eventually I have to kill the program in task manager.
I didn't have this problem with CS4. Has anyone tried using this workflow with a network drive with success?
Any ideas what the problem might be?
There is plenty of free space on the network drive.
    Thanks.

Adobe always answers that they can't guarantee anything working with networked drives because they can't know every network configuration out there.
Hence, always save to a local drive initially.

  • TM works with network drives?

Just to be sure - TM works with directly attached drives. But does it also work with network drives? I hope it does at least with Apples newest update.
    Thanks

There is plenty of documentation/discussion of a workaround that let's you make your computer recognize unsupported drives. Search for it using words like terminal network unsupported drive backup and you will find it. Some people say it works fine, and others caution against using it. I haven't seen a thorough discussion that really explains why Apple doesn't allow it, or why it's risky, or why it works, but that's typical of the boards that attract a techie crowd. Me? After spending $650 for a Terastation, I'm going to give it a try. Apple wants so badly for Windows users to switch to Mac, but they sometimes seem to make it very difficult and frustrating for us.

  • Excel 2007 and 2010 slow to save to network drive with Windows 7

I know this issue has been passed around and I know that there are some fixes out there. I will lay out my issue and resources, what I've tried and the things I've noticed.
I have a mix of Server 2003 32bit, 64 bit and 2008 64 bit. The desktop/laptop environment is mainly XP (no issues saving with an XP machine), a few Win 7 computers and a dozen thin clients running off the 2008 TS. The slow saving issue happens with either
a Win 7 machine or a client terminal served into 2008. It takes 60 seconds or more to save or "save as" an excel file to a network drive. Same thing happens with any Office product. No issue saving to the local machine. If you log into either 7 or
TS with the domain admin account, the saving takes no time at all. Only as a domain user does it hang.
I have tried the SMB2 trick, the 981711 hotfix, turning off indexing and starting the webclient service. I am probably forgetting a trick or two that I've seen online from various people having the same issue. Point is though, the issue remains and besides
being utterly annoying, it is preventing me from rolling Windows 7 out to my employees. Please Help. Thank you in advance for any advice posted

    Hi,
Have you tried to create a new txt file with notepad to test this issue? If this issue also happens on .txt file, you should check your network.
And I suggest all users disable their anti-virus to see if the problem goes away.
There are other things to try if the problem is evident in all of the documents you open. When EXCEL is not running, make sure you delete all the temporary files that
EXCEL may have left lying around various folders in your system. Look for files that end with the TMP extension, or files that being with the tilde (~) character. If your file folders become very cluttered with these temporary files, it can slow EXCEL down
    immensely.
Another thing to try is to start EXCEL with the
/a switch on the command line. This causes it to load without also loading different startup files such as add-ins and macros. If this fixes the problem, then you can bet that the slowdown is caused by one of those add-ins or macros.
You might also rename the Normal.dot (or Normal.dotm) file; if it is corrupted then it can slow down response times. (Renaming the file causes Word to create a clean,
fresh, empty one the next time you start the program.)

  • Why won't iPod sync with iPhoto library on external drive?

I've run out of room for my iPhoto library on my Mini's 80 gig internal drive - especially now that the iPod cache takes up an extra 7 gig! So I've moved the iPhoto Library over to an external firewire drive - but now I'm getting the dreaded error -50. The iPod synced OK with the same iPhoto library when it was hosted locally, but now it's on an external drive it won't sync at all, even if I host the iPod Photo Cache on my internal drive and link back to it with an alias.
Is this a known problem, has anyone else had this and found a way around it? Fixing permissions, trashing preferences, etc won't work. The iPod will sync with folders on the external drive, just not with the iPhoto library.
I'm running the latest of everything (60 gig iPod Photo with firmware v1.2, Mini running 10.4.2, iPhoto 5.02, iTunes 4.9).

You have to rename your Photo Library (before deleting it, a precaution). Then launch iPhoto...it will ask you where your library is...tell it the external HD...then when everything's hunky dory, quit iPhoto, launch iTunes and try to sync with iPod.
after everything's working fine for a few times, delete gargantuan renamed Photo Library on internal drive.
I've always run iPhoto and its library from an external FireWire drive for a number of reasons.

I wish that I could offer some help, but I'm about to post a topic with a similar problem.  I posted it on the iCloud discussion board a few days ago.  Since then I've upgraded to Yosemite, so I can get iCloud Drive on this machine and hopefully be in sync with what's on my iPhone & iPad in Pages.  But alas, the problem remains.  The files are not up to date on the desktop running Yosemite and just the same as they were when they were on Mavericks.
My other topic is posted here:Trouble logging into iCloud.com on Mac running Mavericks
One thing you might do, although I'm not sure is log out and back into iCloud (System Prefs) and see if that updates things.  You could delete files off of iCloud Drive, but I am NOT going to do that nor am I recommending it.  Just trying to think of solutions.  Stay tuned for a similar topic in the Pages board here.
    Thanks and keep us posted!

  • Finder is very slow, particularly when using network drive

I have a mid-2011 Macbook Air, OSX 10.9.4, and Finder is extremely slow, particularly when I am navigating my Time Capsule.  First, a little history.
I have tried the fixes listed in these three threads:
    (1) https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3358265?searchText=finder%20slow
    (2) https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1324280?searchText=Finder%20is%20slow
    (3) https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5495797?start=30&tstart=0
Second, my Time Capsule is new.  I bought it to replace a WD MyBook that used to work really well, and then something changed.  Unfortunately, I assumed that it was some problem on WD's side, so after a year or two of waiting to see if either WD or Apple issued an update to fix it, I assumed it was some kind of file system incompatibility (or other interoperability problem) that wasn't likely to go away, and just sprung for the Time Capsule.  However, after getting all the files on the Time Capsule, the problem remains.  So here's a rundown of what I experience:
When I navigate the directories on my Time Capsule, if I haven't been in a particular folder, it takes a very long time to load the contents.  On average, it will be 30 seconds, but it is not uncommon for it to be over a minute.  This can happen even if a folder is empty or has just a few files in it.  In addition, adding a subfolder and trying to rename it takes a very long time.  After renaming a new folder, it can then take another full minute or more for the folder to actually show the newly assigned name and bounce into line in alphabetical order.
Here are some other observations.  First, my connection is very fast, as I'm directly connected to the Time Capsule (albeit via wireless).  Second, there is clearly something extra going on in Finder that is contributing to this issue, because I navigated to different directories using Terminal and did an "ls" command, and as you would expect, the list fired out virtually instantaneously.  Yet, right after that, if I clicked on that same folder with Finder, it would take a minute or more to display the same file names.
Could it be that the Finder is doing other things at the same time as it is giving me a list of what is in the directory?  For example, could the Finder be loading ALL metadata for each of the files into some database or index being built on the fly every time I pop into a new folder, even if I'm not using a view mode where I am asking to see those other bits of metadata?  If so, that might make sense as I generally am using the network drive to navigate directories of my photographs, and they have a lot more categories of metadata associated with them than do Word docs and PDFs (e.g., date of picture, time of picture, aperture, shutter speed, exposure, etc.).  Or, perhaps is Finder trying to load previews of ALL of the files whenever a directory request is made, so that bouncing through the previews takes less time?  I sort of doubt that, because even after a directory listing finally comes up, it seems to churn a bit on each photo before the preview comes up, which I take as an indication that it's creating each preview only after a request is made for that particular file.  Either way, I will say that in old WinXP and even in the newer Windows 7, if you want to view files in a Detailed setting where you can see other metadata (called "Attributes"), it definitely prioritizes giving you a directory listing, and then continues filling in the various selected Attributes one-by-one after that.  Thus, if you want to sort by the date a photograph was taken (as opposed to its modified or created date, which seem to be default attributes that load as quickly (or nearly as quickly) as the filename), or by the photo's dimensions, it might take a few minutes to load in those attributes for a folder of a couple thousand pictures.  But, critically, if you are not planning on using those attributes, but rather, merely want to see how many files you have in that folder, or select them all and load them into a photo viewer, you won't have to wait for the file system to load the file attributes before you get a listing of the folder's contents.  It seems to me like the Finder, however, might actually be forcing you to wait until it has loaded all of those attributes.
Does the foregoing sound like a plausible explanation of the problem to those out there with knowledge of how Finder actually works?  And if so, does that bring to mind any potential settings that could be turned off or any other work-arounds (since those I've tried have not fixed the issue)?
If anyone has other ideas, I am all ears.  I am pretty annoyed that I sunk time into switching over to a Time Capsule on the assumption that Apple couldn't have had a bug this bad, only to find out that I was wrong.  The biggest irony is that my old WinXP computer used to rip through the folder structures with ease on the MyBook, but my fully updated Air is practically crippled by the same task.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.
