Slow ipod updating

slow ipod updating

All we cansayin this Apple forumis that downgrading the iOS is not supported by Apple.
Now:
Periodically double click the home button and close all the apps in the recently used dock. Then power off and then back on the iPod. This frees up memory. The 4G only has 256 MB of memory.
Next try:
- Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
- Restore from backup. See:
iOS: How to back up
- Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.

  • Very Slow IPod Updates

I just moved my music to an external HDD and am now updating. It is taking forever -- about 1/2 hour for 24 songs. Surely this should not be happening? My notebook is a Pentium 1.6GHz; my external drive is Iomega 80GB. My IPod is new 30GB color screen. Updates used to happen in a flash on same equipment but the notebook's internal drive.
    thx

How do I tell? I called up properties, but it just told me the drive name (Hitachi DK23FA-40). If it helps, this is an Iomega 80GB drive I bought in HK about 1 year ago.
However, now that you say that I remember this is passing through an HP/Targus USB Hub that my HK dealer gave me as a freebie when I bought the notebook. That's probably slowing it down -- 3 sets of cables, not one. Think that's the problem? I'll try that next time.

  • Slow Ipod update with itunes

When ever i plug in my ipod to update with itunes it takes FOREVER. Why is this? Can I help this and make it faster? I have alot of video podcast and movie content thet changes alot so is that why its sooooooooooo slow. Just to let you know, the computer itself isnt slow. Its one of the fastest ive ever used. PLEASE HELP!!! ITS DRIVING ME CRAZY!!!

I've been frustrated w/ the speed for a long time.
When I first got my video ipod it took over 24hours to initially load it. This was w/ only 10-12GB of music.
The other week I had to reinit my ipod and fully reload it. This time I had approx 12GB of tunes, and tons of video files. Total load size around 50GB. This time it took just over 12 hours.
I discovered that the video interface of the Windows version of iTunes is a CPU hog.
Minimize iTunes while its loading your iPod. This more than doubled my data transfer rate to the iPod (over USB2.x)
fyi, I run an old PCI ATI graphics adapter. My friends w/ way faster graphics never complain about the speed issue.
On older versions of iTunes I also found that it helped to set all the iTunes processes affinity to the boot strap proc (first processor typically as Windows sees them). This had helped w/ speed, but also helped eliminate blue screens. The need to do this seems to have been eliminated in the v7.x iTunes.

  • IPod slow to update on B&W G3

I have a B&W G3 PowerMac and I'm connecting my 4G iPod via Firewire, and it is ludicrously slow at updating (like 20 seconds per song!). I have no other Firewire devices connected. I actually posted about this issue a long time ago and received a response on here that there might be a firmware setting on the Mac I can change to help this out, but unfortunately that posting has long since scrolled off here. Anyone able to help out?
    -Tim

It might be your fire wire card and u might hav 2 upgrade ur compure u can buy the parts @ macsales.com

  • IPOD Updater - Error 1324 - The Folder path contains an invalid character

I tried to install ITUNES on an external HD (I didn't want to slow down my computer by putting all of my music on my internal HD). ITunes installed and then crashed. I removed all traces of ITUNES and IPOD that I could find and went to install ITUNES again on my regular internal drive. Now it goes through the installation and REMEMBERS my IPOD serial number (so obviously I can't find all of the files to remove) but doesn't give me a choice of where to install (it still must be trying to install to my external HD) the ITUNES. All I get is the following Error message:
IPOD Updater - Error 1324 - The Folder path "Program Files" contains an invalid character
Does anyone have a solution out there?
    Thanks in advance!

IPOD Updater - Error 1324 - The Folder path "Program Files" contains an invalid character
Interesting. It's choking on the old iPod updater application. (iPod software updates are no longer handled by a standalone application ... that function was folded into iTunes beginning with iTunes 7.0.0.70.)
    Let's try the following procedure.
Download and install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility:
Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility
Now launch Windows Installer CleanUp ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"), find any entries called "ipod for windows \[date]" or "ipod updater \[date]" or just "ipod for windows" in the list of programs in CleanUp, select those entries, and click “remove”.
Quit out of CleanUp, and restart the PC.
Does an itunes install go through properly after that?

  • After runnin iPod Updater 2006-06-28 for my 2GB iPod Nano my computer froze

I installed iTunes 6.0.5 and my 2GB iPod Nano was recognized... everything seemed OK. I then tried running iPod Updater 2006-06-28 and this is when my problems began. After running the Updater program my iPod froze during the update process. I had to shutdown my computer in order to stop the updater program. Upon restarting my computer, iTunes no longer recognizes my iPod and if I run the updater program again it continues to freeze or does not recognize my iPod. When I plug in my iPod, Windows recognizes my iPod but my computer becomes very slow. Please note that when my iPod is not connected to my computer it appears to be OK but all my data has been removed. The updater program also appears to have been successful in updating my iPod to v1.2.
To try and resolve this issue I performed Apple's Five Rs and also followed Apples instructions for "iPod shows up in Windows but not in iTunes." Please see the links below for these procedures.

  • I can't install iPod updater 1.2

I just downloaded iTunes 7.0 and there was a pop-up asking me to install iPod Update but when I clicked 'Install' my iPod seemed to eject itself and showed main menu on the screen instead of 'Do not disconnect'.
Few sec later on the window, it said that iPod couldn't be updated. An unknown error has occurred (1417)!?
    What was that about?
And one more question, when you click eject iPod then you want to add some more songs, you quit iTunes and open it again, is iPod suppossed to respond and show that it's connecting with the iTunes or it's just dead and you have to pull the plug then plug in again!? Because lately mine doesn't seem to have any respond after ejecting, it used to, anyway.
    Help!!!
    Thanks

Forum Regular Hi There, i had the same issues and followed these instructions. They worked for me so, im hoping they will work for you.
1)Plug in your iPod and wait for iTunes to tell you an update for it is available
2)Click the Install button on that dialog and keep an eye on your iPod
3)When your iPod screen switches from the flashing "Do Not Disconnect" message to the Main Menu screen, unplug the iPod, wait a couple SECONDS, plug the iPod back in
4)You should notice some slow-down in the progress meter and a new dialog box should come up and tell you your iPod is being updated and to not disconnect it until the update finishes
5)That's it. Wait for the update to finish and iTunes will re-recognize it and show its new up-to-date status.

  • ITunes and iPod updated software is impossible to download

I download stuff all the time, but I have not been able to download any recent itunes or ipod updated software since december 2005.
Of course, Apple provides no easy contact info just this useless message board.
There is nothing wrong with my cable modem. There is something wrong with the apple servers. overloaded or something.

If you go to apple.com, you'll find a Contact Us link at the bottom of the page. I have a copy of iTunes for Windows downloading now for a friend who has a slower connection than mine so the server seems to be fine.

  • Brand New IPod Mini - Can't mount iPod from IPod Updater

Just bought a brand new IPOD mini. When I try to use the IPod Updater, I get an error message "Can't mount iPod".
Windows XP Services shows IPOD services is started.
The IPOD appears in My computer as "Removalable Disk".
Also, my IPOD does not appear in iTunes.

This is a very reasonable strategy. It has been previously used for USB problems with battery charging.
See this link: The iPod Battery Unplugged..
A synopsis of it is as follows:
"For best results, try not to use computer ports to charge your iPod. USB is especially sensitive to how many devices are on it and what the resulting bus voltage is. It may even display the charging icon but not be adding much to the battery. USB versions prior to 2.0 will not charge your iPod (and probably be too slow for its other functions). Even USB 2.0 is limited to 700 milliamps and an iPod "likes" to see one full amp for charging, plus some to spin the HD while mounted. Some (early) iPod models will not charge from USB, period. Some PCs use 4-pin Firewire cables (all Macs are 6-pin) which carry no charging voltage, so they won't work at all for recharging and can allow your iPod to run down and cause serious problems while updating firmware, restoring, or loading songs. Both USB and Firewire require the iPod to be mounted by your computer as an external drive, which means the iPod's HD is spinning, using some of the juice that the battery might like to have. And if the computer sleeps or is turned off, the battery won't charge and in some cases will actually drain through the port circuits. Bottom line: if your ports are not doing a good job of charging your battery, use the wall adapter to charge for several cycles before questioning the battery's credentials. If you have a new iPod which only comes with USB, don't panic; it can work fine. But if you do experience problems, either take everything else off the USB bus (except mouse & keyboard) and/or get an AC adapter."

  • Ipod Update Freezes

    Any ideas?
    My thoughts:
-Comp USA PCI USB 2.0 card not functioning?

  • The difference between itunes update and ipod update

Sure, if you have an iPod, then the updater is used to make sure your iPod is running the latest firmware.

  • Won't show up on itunes or on ipod updater("ipod service error")

Every time i plug my ipod (4g w/ click wheel) it says on itunes software not installed correctly, it shows up as a drive but i can't see it on itunes, i have tried to reinstall itunes more than 5 times and nothing works. Also, when I try to restore my ipod with ipod updater i get an "ipod service error". I am going crazy here trying to figure this out, someone please help me!

Try this for can't mount iPod:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302538
You might also want to try putting your iPod in disk mode:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
Sometimes this does the trick (iPod normally needs to be in disk mode in order for it to show up in Disk Management)
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93499
If you're still unable to get your iPod to restore, you can try this:
Put the iPod into disk mode, according to the article above.
    Connect it to your computer.
    Click Start > Run
    Type compmgmt.msc
Click on Disk Management (in the left-hand column)
Let the computer go through its connection process
Right click on the iPod and click Format
    Set the format to FAT32
Leave all the other settings on their defaults
Do Not select the option to Quickformat
    Start the format.
It's recommended that you still try to restore the iPod after formatting, but it's not always necessary. This should get your iPod back into iTunes.

  • I think the latest ipod updater is broken...I don't recommend using it.

    Hi all,
I had ipod 30 gig video number 1. It would lock up and couldn't be reset so you had to wait for the battery to die to charge it up to use it again. Then it started skipping tracks. Then one day, post an update attempt of the firmware, the dreaded folder with an exclamation mark came up.
Well I finally managed to get the updater to try to restore it only to have it come back with 'firmware update failure - disc write error'. I figured it was just that the hardrive was toast.
So I took it to the Apple care center and got ipod 30 gig video number 2 replacement! Yea!
Brought it home, plug it in to charge a bit - said do not disconnect for a couple hours so I finally disconnected it. I could see the menus so it was working at this point.
Then I ran THE DREADED IPOD UPDATER!
Firmware update failure - disc write error!!!!!! AGAIN!!!!
Boom, right back to where I was with the first one. Can only either get 1) the folder of doom (explamation mark folder) or 2) disc mode; do not disconnect to show up.
Itunes 6.05 (reinstalled several times at this point) wont see it.
Ipod updater will come back with 'cannot continue because another app is using the the ipod' - except it has given me this message even when the ipod is not connnected!
I have tried pluggin in ipod with just itunes going, just the updater going, nothing going and starting itunes and nothing going and starting the updater. I have swapped the usb cable. I have stood on my head and whistled a tune.
    Nothing works.
I have gone thru the 'when your itunes does not see your ipod while windows does page' to no avail. I am not going to reinstall windows on a machine that is working perfectly well. Basically, these issues all started when I downloaded the newest ipod updater.
I am going to see if I can get an older copy or something but this is downright ridiculous. I have spent basically 3 hours tonight shutdown/restarting and searching for the phone number to call for my 90 days or support call to no avail on the website.
So, good luck people, you are going to need it!

    Hey there,
So I finally got the itunes 6.05 installed on the office machine as well as the ipodupdater 6/28/06.
I started itunes. I started the updater and it said hook up an ipod to update. I hooked up the ipod and after a bit (1 minute) I was given the option to restore (but not update). I choose restore and after about 2 mins it was restored and progress bar on ipod had moved as well as on the main computer screen. Then it showed the menu briefly (yea!) but then went to do not disconnect mode (boo). Fortunately, after another few minutes I was given the option to name the ipod on the main computer and then after that the ipod went back to its menu screen so I quick unplugged it.
So now I am back where I was when I took it from the shop the other day. Now to see if I can get songs on it tonight at home.
