Slow iPod

My iPod is constantly freezing and takes a long time to play songs when not frozen.
After my iPod freezes, I follow the standard resetting procedure, and yet it takes hours on the screen where it shows just a dark screen with the Apple logo in the middle. After the hours, it lights up with the sad face screen saying 'support.apple.com'. It takes almost twenty times until it works, and then it only works for a few songs.
This started after I updated my iPod. It began freezing a few times, and it was not that big of a deal. However, the condition worsened and worsened until this point.
I'm currently attempting to downgrade my iPod, but I don't have the time to wait hours for my iPod to tell me that it doesn't work. (The sooner I reset it after a response from it, the faster it becomes working again.)
When my iPod is in it's current state, where it just shows the Apple logo on a dark, unbacklighted screen, my computer and iTunes does not recognize it.
Any advice/help is greatly appreciated.

    slow ipod updating

All we cansayin this Apple forumis that downgrading the iOS is not supported by Apple.
    Now:
Periodically double click the home button and close all the apps in the recently used dock. Then power off and then back on the iPod. This frees up memory. The 4G only has 256 MB of memory.
    Next try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:

    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.

  • Slow iPod sync with network drive

I run a small network for my home/office (I am self employed) with about 4 PCs for me and my family.
We have 3 iPods in our family and we just use one PC to host iTunes, but because we have so much music, I have put the music on a network drive served from my file server (Windows Small Business Server - Windows Server 2003 based).
There's no problem with this setup, except one:
I've noticed that when iPods sync with iTunes, it takes a very long time, perhaps 5 times as long than when I had my music files on an external hard drive directly connected to the PC on which we run iTunes.
This is fustrating. My question is: is there anything that can be done about this ?
I can't really understand why this should be an issue. iTunes has, stored in the library files on my local PC, the details of all my music files. So when my iPod syncs, surely iTunes consults the iPod and consults what is in iTunes and figures out what should change - and then and only then should iTunes need to connect to the network drive to actually get any necessary files. Is my understanding wrong of what iTunes is doing when syncing an iPod ?
The issue is that even with no changes, sync-ing is an issue.
Any help on this gratefully received - have looked in this forum and other places, but haven't managed to trawl and info on my issue.

Having been given an iPod video 60Gig as a present, I am sometimes forced to use it.
Recently I tried - I downloaded and installed latest itunes 7.5 on the PC running Windows XP.
Built up the library of music - tried to do a sync. So slow I nearly hit the PC. The transfer rate would merely get 40 Meg on in 5 minutes (thats my estimate all I know is it never finished). I tried to leave it running for 3 hours and still not finished - the size of music to transfer was about 2400 songs.
I then tried to use Vista Home Basic - with itunes 7.5 - it wouldnt even recognize the ipod.
After a few days of giving up and banging my head against the wall I tried Linux too - but that was slow too.
I eventually went back to Vista and de-installed itunes 7.5 - found version 6.05 and installed it. It went through like clockwork (well as clockwork as can be it was magically fast but fast enough to fill half of the 60Gig).
I then had the magic idea - why not update to 7.5 from 6.05 and guess what - its slow again painfully slow.
    Version 7.5 *****!

  • Trouble playing videos, slow iPod

I have filled my iPod with lots of audio and video podcasts, and music from CDs, and some data, with only 500 MB free memory.
iPod is very slow to respond to the click wheel or other buttons. Sometimes a song does starts to play only in 5 seconds or more, not immediately. This did not happen when the iPod was new (i.e. emptier). This is annoying.
I have more trouble with video. Some videos do not start playing at all, or start only sometimes. Sometimes some video podcasts of the same podcast subscription play, and some do not. I assume all are in the same format.
I have formatted the iPod for Windows to use it sometimes as hard drive on a PC and charging, but iTunes is running on a Mac. I have not reset my iPod for some time.
My guess is that the iPod cannot handle a full hard drive and a big podcast and music library. But it's just a guess.
    Any suggestions?
    - Mikko

    I have the same problem. . . i think.
When i click on the name of the movie on my ipod video, 30 gbs, only the line of how long the movie has played, and a tiny picture of the movie will show up. The same with music videos and that stuff.
    But the sound works perfectly.
    Thank you!

  • Slow iPod Shuffle Downloads

Does any one know how fast songs should transfer to the iPod shuffle from iTunes 4.9 on Windows XP SP2 using USB 2?
My transfers have been slow; taking over 10 minutes to transfer around 500 Mb of songs, even if AAC compression is turned off.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?
    Thanks!
    --Al

I recently "upgraded" to a shuffle from a mini (I didn't use all the features of the mini and my wife wanted an iPod).
The fastest transfers were with the mini using firewire. Next fastet was the mini using USB 2.0. The shuffle with USB 2.0 was slower again. USB 1.1 is the slowest.
Interestingly, the shuffle over USB 2.0 is not that much faster than USB 1.1. As others have said, this is due to the slow write speeds of flash memory. USB 2.0 can burst data at 480MB/s but the flash is probably writing at around 20MB/s, which is much closer to USB 1.1's 12MB/s.

  • Slow iPod Synch with iTunes

I'm using a networked linksys NSLU to house my music library and music files. When I plug in my iPod (video), it starts to synch immediately (I have it set to do this). The problem I see is that it takes forever >10 minutes to just even evaluate my 16gb of music to determine if there are any changes to synch.
This seems extremely slow. Is this because it's doing it over the network to the linksys NLSU?
Anyone else with this problem? Suggestions on getting the synch to happen faster?
    Thanks.
Dell   Windows XP   Networked to linksys NSLU

I've been frustrated w/ the speed for a long time.
When I first got my video ipod it took over 24hours to initially load it. This was w/ only 10-12GB of music.
The other week I had to reinit my ipod and fully reload it. This time I had approx 12GB of tunes, and tons of video files. Total load size around 50GB. This time it took just over 12 hours.
I discovered that the video interface of the Windows version of iTunes is a CPU hog.
Minimize iTunes while its loading your iPod. This more than doubled my data transfer rate to the iPod (over USB2.x)
fyi, I run an old PCI ATI graphics adapter. My friends w/ way faster graphics never complain about the speed issue.
On older versions of iTunes I also found that it helped to set all the iTunes processes affinity to the boot strap proc (first processor typically as Windows sees them). This had helped w/ speed, but also helped eliminate blue screens. The need to do this seems to have been eliminated in the v7.x iTunes.

  • Advanced suggestions for slow iPod sync?

A few weeks after I upgraded to iTunes 7, I noticed that my 60GB iPod was taking several hours to sync. Using Task Manager, I found that everything is fine for about 30 seconds after starting the sync, then the processor pegs to 100%, making the system unusable. I have tried doing all of the "R"s, and also followed the tip of changing the Windows drive letter. I've also tried changing various options (disable disk use, only sync music, only sync podcasts, etc) but with no success. Can anyone offer any other suggestions? This has become an impossible situation. Thank you.

  • Very Slow IPod Updates

I just moved my music to an external HDD and am now updating. It is taking forever -- about 1/2 hour for 24 songs. Surely this should not be happening? My notebook is a Pentium 1.6GHz; my external drive is Iomega 80GB. My IPod is new 30GB color screen. Updates used to happen in a flash on same equipment but the notebook's internal drive.
    thx

How do I tell? I called up properties, but it just told me the drive name (Hitachi DK23FA-40). If it helps, this is an Iomega 80GB drive I bought in HK about 1 year ago.
However, now that you say that I remember this is passing through an HP/Targus USB Hub that my HK dealer gave me as a freebie when I bought the notebook. That's probably slowing it down -- 3 sets of cables, not one. Think that's the problem? I'll try that next time.

  • Slow iPod Backup : some Apps are the cause !

    Hello,
A lot of complaining has been heard on slow backup of iPod Touch. It seems some Apps are the cause of this issue : for example LinkedIn will create a backup file for every person - and every contact of that person - you ever visited !
Same is true for some newspaper sites, keeping every article ever read in a file ...
Currently my backup directory contains 23.000+ files, which is of course ridiculous.
    - Apps developers : please be aware that every file created will cost approx 4 sec of backup time - not a problem in itself, except when you have 1000+ of them for a single Apps
    - Apple : please use a mechanism of sub-directories, having 23k files in a single directory is madness, and makes it hard to identify the "guilty" applications.
Thanks for responding to these suggestions ...

  • Slow ipod touch

My second gen ipod touch is very slow. I need a way to make it faster. I was thinking about going into the settings and erasing all content amd settings, but im npt sure of that will help.

Try a Reset first: hold down the power and home buttons, wait for the Apple logo, let go of the buttons.
Try Restoring it from your Backup in iTunes if the above doesn't help.

  • Slow ipod touch 4g

    Hello.
My iPod touch 4g 64GB iOS 5.1 slowed down.
I would like to try to "empty" it, leave everything backed up in my MacBook Pro (I don't back up to iCloud, only to my computer) and then, slowly slowly, 1 by 1 start adding the applications (songs, calendars, apps, etc) and try to find out if there is something specific slowing it down.
It is slow also switching between applications and also with the Wi-Fi connection (I am experiencing also crashes from time to time).
    How do I "empty" it?
Thanks in advance for any help.

  • Slow iPod 4g, apps crash

My iPod Touch 4g is slow and lags, and randomly boots me off of apps and Safari. I don't know why. I have upgraded to ios 5, but it was doing this before that too. How can I fix this? Is there somewhere I can send the iPod to be fixed or tuned up?

Not me.  Neither I nor anyone in my family has had any problems with any of our iDevices upgrading to iOS 6.
Probably user error or faiure to take the recommended troubleshooting steps.
