Slow iTunes podcast download

Hi,
It takes me, and others, 11 minutes to download our new episode (69MB) from iTunes.  Other people's podcasts, of a similar size, I can download in 1 or 2 minutes.
My internet speed is solid, and I've just contacted godaddy support, and they insist that it's an iTunes problem; as downloading episodes from our RRS feed directly is very quick.  Additionally, I'm on win7 with iTunes v11.0.4, but have recieved complaints from mac users as well.
I cleared my roaming iTunes cache manually, as well as through the iTunes preferences, and restarted to no effect.
I'm concerned about alienating our meager listenership with unusually long iTunes download times, any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks for your time,
D.

It's nothing to do with iTunes. When I tried downloading your latest episode in FireFox it said it was going to take fifteen minutes. (My connection, by the way, is 100Mb/s.) It might be the server, or anything in the connection between wherever it is and me (in the UK), but you can rule out iTunes as an issue (in fact when I subscribed it said it would take 11 minutes which is slightly better).

  • Itunes Podcast Download so slow?

Finally tired of the slow podcast downloads on my Itunes on my Macbook Pro wanted to ask what I can do to increase the rate?  I have 25 MB/sec internet that works great for Netflix and all other websites.  BUT for Itunes it takes forever to attempt to buy a movie rental I always give up. Any advice much appreciated!

There may be a number of reasons. What is the actual speed of your internet connection (speedtest.net). Are you trying to download SD or HD iTunes movies.

  • Itunes podcast download (-39) error

Persistent fault with a (-39) error relating to broken/corrupted downloads. Itunes doesn't seem to cope too well with this and the tmp download file that's created is sometimes unrecoverable
    In the following path...
    C:\users\username\music\itunes library\itunes media\Downloads\Podcasts
Delete the file/folder concerned, go back to itunes and update podcast and it'll start again with a fresh download.

    Mmm interesting.
Googling the error returns some people having problems syncing their photos, pointing to an iTunes client problem, which would make sense since you can subscribe to the podcast.
I still can't subscribe to it but I am hopefully the only one.
    Thanks for your help.

  • ITunes Podcast Download Failing

I recently reinstalled OS X to give me a nice clean fresh install, after this i transfered my whole library back to this new clean install, but after reinstalling i've subscribed to my favorite podcasts, the videos download but as soon as there done they dont show up under the podcasts title in the podcasts section. This is quite annoying, i've tried serveral times and as a person who uses itunes to download his favorite podcasts and sync it to my ipod is even more annoying, i've tried creating a new library file, but that doesnt work ether.
    Any ideas guys?

I had a similar issue. I had to authorize my computer again for my purchases associated with my apple account. This is found in the Advanced menu.
However, I'm having a different problem no. Iy seems to have happened as a result of upgrading to iTunes 7.5. The problem I'm having now is that my podcasts aren't even downloading now. When I click on the "!" it says "there was a problem downloading 'podcast title' You do not have privileges to make changes". This is very frustrating. It doesn't seem to happen with my free podcasts, only the ones I have user names and passwords for, does it give me this issue. I even tried deleting a podcast and re-adding it, but the same exact issue still exists.

  • ITunes podcast downloading problem.  "Authorization is required to access" error message.

I've been subsribing to a podcast through iTunes for years with no problems, but today I get the error message:
"There was a problem downloading (podcast name).  Authorization is required to access (url feed)"
Its a BBC podcast and I now get the same error message for all the other BBC podcasts that I subscribe to.  I also cant play or download any BBC podcasts from the iTunes Store.  All other podcasts by all other providers are fine.
Weirdly this problem seems to be limited to the Macbook Pro as the iMac on the same network can access the problem podcasts with no hassle.
A few web searches have turned up very little, any ideas in Apple Communities-land!

Hey Roger and thanks for your amazingly quick response.
I did a quick confirm: it doesn't seem to work on any Windows machines I can get my hands on, so it isn't something specific to me (whew!).  It definitely DOES work on any Mac I can get my hands on (which you also confirmed - thanks).
That link, the feedproxy.google.com one, works fine on Windows and Mac alike.  I very much imagine that someone else is using FeedBurner and while I'm not huge into podcasts, there are a lot of others who are.  This issue would've come up if it were something like that.  Either way: I can access that link (and thus the content) just fine on any machine I'm on.
So, what you're saying is to ditch FeedBurner entirely and just submit the raw feed to iTunes.  That sounds good (and, if I want more indepth statistics later, I'll cross that bridge then)...but I'm afraid I'm not sure how to do that.  I've already submitted the FeedBurner feed to iTunes and I'm not sure how I'd go about changing it.  Would I simply ask iTunes to delete the old feed and more or less resubmit?
Thanks for the help about the artwork.  The individual files may very well be missing the metadata, as when I asked the guy doing that if he had included the artwork, he indicated he was rather confused.  I'll test that out in a bit.  The feed artwork, however, I must admit ignorance about.  Where might I be able to change that?  I'm using WordPress and...PowerPress/BluBrry (or whatever it's referred to).
Thanks again for being so incredibly helpful with all this.  And so timely, too.

  • Backup iTunes podcast download status for Windows XP reinstall

I'm preparing for a long overdue reinstall of Windows XP. I use iTunes to downoad oodles of podcasts; I have many episodes which I've not yet downloaded and won't until I've completed the reinstall. That is, their download status is still set to "Get".
My question is: How can I backup the status of my individual podcast episodes?
I know how to backup/export the subscriptions (OPML) and the already downloaded files of course. Does iTunes have a file (XML? .config? ...) or some metadata that I can hook into so that I don't have to re-download everything once my reinstall is done?

    Same problem for Windows 7

  • Itunes podcast downloading error (err = -3259)

    Hello,
I am using itunes with my IPOD since 2 years. all fine so far. Now, since a few weeks, some podcasts don`t get downloaded anymore. I always receive the error message (err = -3259) and thats it. Does anyone else have the same problem? I also tried a different timing and deleted the podcast and renewed it from itunes, but no change. I am already desperate.... and want to have the content updated for sure.
Thanks for your comments & have a prosperous and happy new year.

I've been having the same problem for about two weeks now. Before then, I had no problem downloading multiple podcasts. Now, only one downloads fine while all the rest time out. What is really odd is that they are all about the same size (even the one that I can download successfully). I've been searching for a solution online, but to no avail. I even disabled Norton and Windows' firewall, but that did not help at all. Completely frustrating...

  • ITunes Podcast Download

    Hi,
I'm just downloading the latest Apple Keynote, and it seems that since upgrading to iTunes 8.0 that I cannot watch it while it downloads.
Is this new in iTunes, I'm sure I've done this on previous versions?
    Cheers

I have also found this to be a major failing of iTunes.
The facts are network timeouts do happen, some connections do drop out, and some podcasted files are really big.
The Podcast function should know how to resume a file as long as it hasn't changed (checked by date modified, size, etc.).
It isn't a technically complex feature to implement. Even just the option would be nice.
It's especially frustrating when you're near the end of a large file and then iTunes has a sad and restarts it.

  • Slow iTunes Store downloads - again

Few days ago it took me over 3 hours to download album just 180 MB in size - I though that it was bad.
An hour ago I got notification that new episode of Grey's Anatomy is ready for download - so I fired up iTunes and started download. It is crawling...
What used to be a 35 to 40 minutes download now shows 36 hours (yes, hours!!!) remaining.
I remember we (a lot of reports here at that time) had such slow downloads several months back and problem lasted for about few weeks.
Are we heading for another slow months????

I usually test around 5 as well, but sure enough I noticed a HUGE slowdown in my internet speed after an evening of downloading rentals last week. The slow speed (less than 1.5!) continued on after that and it took a tech support call to my ISP to get it "fixed".
My guess - Qwest is "throttling" video-intensive internet use. Torrent or not.
I believe Qwest automatically throttles any encrypted downloads but I don't know if AppleTV downloads are encrypted?
My speed is back up around 5 again, and I will keep a close eye on it next time I rent.

  • ITunes Podcast Downloading RSS Feed

Hi, I'm trying to submit a podcast, but it keeps asking for an RSS feed. What is this? How do i figure out what to put in?

The Store checks only the latest episode of your feed when you submit your podcast. The media file URL for your latest episode, Day 21, is
    http://adamstadtmiller.com/wp-content/uploads/podcast/P4YE21DAY121.mp3
and there is no file at this address. This is because you've mistyped it: the actual URL is
    http://adamstadtmiller.com/wp-content/uploads/podcast/P4YE21DAY21.mp3

  • ITunes' podcasts no longer download (?)

iTunes' podcast downloads had for the most part been downloading fine until the partition that they had been on was deleted and I had to recreate the iTunes folder on that partition from a backup.
When booting from my primary drive using 10.3.9 I can no longer manually, or automatically, download podcasts. And oddly, even podcasts that exist on that partition will not even open in iTunes.
Yet... when I boot from 10.4.9 on a secondary drive which shares the same recreated partition with my iTunes folder (with the podcasts on it) I can download podcasts manually and automatically and it will play all of them without problems.
Common sense would simply be to delete the com.apple.iTunes.plist and maybe even the com.apple.iTunesHelper.plist files. (Which I did.) But this didn't work even though I did this with iTunes inactive and rebooted. So... it would seem that the next step would be to reinstall iTunes. So I deleted both the iTunes app and the preference files again and rebooted. Still my podcasts won't either manually download or automatically download and the really strange thing is that the ones that were downloaded while booted from 10.4.9 will not play when booted from 10.3.9.
I then resubscribed to the broadcasts (i.e. podcasts) and though the available podcast lists appear for each broadcast with "Get" next to each... when I click on them they won't download and I get the icon at the far left showing there is a problem.
Though this might be a prebind problem for the last issue... I don't see how that would affect iTunes not being capable of downloading podcasts from 10.3.9.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I've been listening to iTunes' podcasts for years without this problem so I can only imagine that it must have something to do with the fact that the partition had to be recreated (though I can't see how that fact would affect iTunes in this way when I DIRECTLY drop the podcast files on to the iTunes app icon... and they still will not play. This would bypass any prebind problem it would seem).
Thanks for reading this lengthy post.
Systems 10.3.9 and 10.4.9 on separate internal drives in the same box using iTunes 7.01 (7). Though I had been using iTunes 6.05 with 10.3.9 before this problem occurred. But when I couldn't solve the problem I upgraded to 7.01 with 10.3.9 -- since it was working with 10.4.9 I thought I'd give it a try -- but even that didn't solve the problem.)
    RonL
Mac OS X (10.3.9) 10.3.9 and podcasts don't work, but 10.4.9 and podcasts do work

It appears that I solved the problem. (I like to post my solutions so as to both not waste peoples time and so that if this ever happens to someone else it might help.)
My iTunes alias of the iTunes folder that is by default placed in the Music folder (i.e. ~/Music/iTunes) was broken after the partition where I had moved it was recreated.
Or... since I also forced a re-prebinding (not a simple 'update prebinding') it may have been this since my music in the same folder (on the recreated iTunes folder on the recreated partition) was playing fine and from 10.4.9 the podcasts played fine.
So it may have been both... but anyway... the podcasts are working fine again.

  • Very slow podcast downloads since 10.4.11 update

All Downloading has been fast until the new update to 10.4.11 the other night. 55mb and 63mb which use to take 3-4 minutes now take 2 hrs or more and a 228mb podcast download showing over 9 hrs. Never had this problem before and it is new since upgrade. Anyone else having this problem or found a fix to it.

I have experienced the same problem.  I have several season passes to TV shows which previously downloaded in 10-15 minutes.  Now each episode is taking 7-10 hours to download.  I have been through every recommended fix including deinstalling itunes and reinstalling it, rebuilding the library, restarting my cable modem etc.  When I first installed the update, itunes became unstable and crashed several times forcing a reboot.  I did a repair which failed to fix the problem.  Only after I deinstalled and reinstalled a clean version of itunes FOR THE SECOND TIME did itunes become stable again.
However the download speeds are unacceptably slow.
I contacted itunes tech support, went through two levels of non-tech support and have an open trouble ticket currently.
I have a commercial account at home which provides 25mbps download speed.  Currently itunes is downloading at between 50kbps and 250 kbps.  I have monitored the network performance and its a sawtooth waveform that indicates that my client asks for a download, waits for several milliseconds, then itunes store sends a packet, itunes client asks again, and there is another pause.  it appears to me based on viewing the network performance that the itunes store is just sitting there for a "long" period of time between each transmission that is resulting in this huge loss in performance.
if anyone has any thoughts on this I would appreciate hearing them.

  • Podcasts downloaded to "wrong" folder, then ITunes can't find it anymore

    Hi
When I subscribe to a podcast or download the newest podcast, it will be saved not to the folder of itunesmusic/podcasts/name of podcast, but to /itunesmusic/downloads/podcasts/name of podcast, apparently as tmp-folder. Synchronising just then with my IPOD works, but when I exit ITunes and restart it, the podcast is not found anymore and I get the exclamation mark. When I search for it I can't find the podcast then anymore.
I have ITunes 7.0.2.16 and running Windows XP.
Any one has an idea how to solve this?
Also is there a way to downgrade ITunes to version 6 or so? Because there it worked without problems.
    Appreciate any feedback.

Too my a bit to work out *** was going on, but it was driving me insane with podcasts vanishing on me.
To clarify, this is a full description of the issue:
I have a problem with iTunes losing podcasts. They'd download, seem to play, but when I exited and reloaded iTunes a load of them would be lost and give me the exclamation icon. I've managed to work out why iTunes is losing my podcasts, but have no idea how to fix it.
I've got a folder specified which I want iTunes to use to store my stuff in (E:\Media\itunes).
When I subscribe to a new podcast it downloads to a file called E:\Media\itunes\Downloads\Podcasts\File on 4_ Phone tap evidence - 21 N.tmp\download.mp3 and creates a folder called E:\Media\itunes\Podcasts\File on
I think it's supposed to save it to the first location and then copy it across to the second folder when it's finished. Except it doesn't. iTunes can run the podcast now, but from the temp folder.
When you restart itunes, it nukes everything in the E:\Media\itunes\Downloads\Podcasts folder - I assume as it thinks I have no downloads outstanding and anything in here is just junk.
Apart from manually copying, renaming and point itunes to this file - how do I get around this problem. It's only started since I went to iTunes7 and a complete uninstall/registry/config cleanse followed by a reinstall doesn't fix the problem.

  • Can no longer play podcasts downloaded on itunes on 2nd generation shuffle, is there a fix?

Ever since the latest version of itunes was unleased (Apple is so going downhill if this is any indication) my ipod Shuffle 2nd generation (I have 2) will not play podcasts downloaded on itunes. I get orange, green, orange, green lights and then nothing - because the ipod cannot recognize the files apparently. They both do the same thing, I load, they show up as loaded on itunes, I press play, the lights. If I download the podcast from the originator site directly, they play no problem. I have the latest update for the Shuffles, have reset them numerous times and yet the problem persists. I only use these Shuffles to load podcasts daily. I remove them as soon as I listened and then put new podcasts on the next day. Why do I have 2? Because I bought a second one when this started and I thought the Shuffle was broken - now both act exactly the same. Even old podcasts that played fine months ago will not play on the shuffle any longer. Is there any fix? I assume someone else is a podcast listener and is having this same problem and maybe has a solution.

Switch the mode to single plat, not shuffle.
