Slow iTunes rip speed

Have seen previous threads on this topic, but no answers. Just got an iPod for xmas. Am trying to rip CD's and getting speeds of 1.2 to 1.5X. I'm using 6.0.1 on an iMac. I do not have the use error correction box checked. The CD's are spotless. Is this fixable? Am I doomed to slow download speeds? Are earlier versions of iTunes better?

iTunes' AAC encoder is heavily optimized for the Velocity Engine instruction set, which G3 processors cannot take advantage of, so I suppose that your slow speeds might be normal. Encoding to MP3 might be faster.

Has anyone tested ripping a CD yet? I was wondering what kind of average and max rip speed you were seeing. I have a G4 1.42 with pioneer 107 with firmware update to unlock extra burn and read speeds and I average about 18x and I have seen about 25 once in a while. Does the Mac Pro kill this or is it limited to the speed of the DVD drive? I have a Mac pro on order and was just curious about a real world test.

I have a Mac Pro 3.0 Ghz with two superdrives. I imported a cd earlier today, and on average, I was getting 25-28x.
    Hope this helps.

  • Slow iTunes rental speeds

    Ok,
    two things.
    1. When you click on the text "x hours/minutes remaining" as you are downloading a movie, you can see the "speed" it is downloading at.
The speed iTunes tells you is SO absolutely incorrect, it amazes me. I am running MenuMeters and am seeing total throughput of about 70kb/s right now, while iTunes is telling me the movie is downloading at about 400kb/s.
Its wrong because if it really WAS downloading at that speed, I wouldn't be waiting hours, and hours and hours for this movie to download.
(I rented one last night that said it was going at 2mb/s, when in fact it was topping out at about 600kb/s)
    THAT BEING SAID
    2. Has anyone else noticed an unruly slowdown in speeds today? 60-70kb/s is unacceptable.

Just as a reference that your issue may be unique, I downloaded
6 SD movies this morning between 5:30AM and 8:AM EST. I have
the 15 megabit Comcast service. Also, wasn't continuously downloading
during this period, i.e. when I would finally notice one was done, I would
    start the next.
Also, were you doing simultaneous downloads or only downloading
only one item at a time? This can "seem" to slow things down as
it is a attempting to deliver multiple items at once, and bandwidth
    is shared between them.

  • Very slow iTunes download speeds

I've been having slow download speeds in iTunes for a while now. Downloading a 1 hour TV Show used to take 1 hour or so. Now it's taking 11 hours. Xfinity speed tests say I'm getting 28 mb/s downloads.
    Some info:
    iTunes 10.6 for Windows
Apple Air Extreme - the pc is hard wired to the router
    Comcast as ISP
    Using my ISP's DNS servers

I have a 50x5 Mbit cable business class modem, from Time Warner, in my house (doing that give me priority bandwidth over other residences).... Also as a business class there's no data caps or port blockings.  The most I EVER get from the iTunes Store is 4-5MBytes/sec (about 35 Mbits)... Usually I get 1-2 MBytes/sec to iTunes or any device
    My guesses are
    1) Apple just doesn't have the bandwidth during certain times
    2) I notice they throttle accounts. If I download an entire hd season, I start out fast, then it slows after a few hrs... Im guessing apple has a max data cap per day then slows you down.
    3) I also don't think Apple is capable of handling all the new 35-50Mbit connections that are now readily available from the big cable companies.

  • SuperDrive slow Data Transfer Speeds

I have several home movies DVDs I would like to loadback onto my mid-2011 27" iMac but it is taking for ever to complete the transfer. One DVD disk takes 6 hours because the transfer speed is crawling.  I read up onthis and info says my HL-DT-STDVDRW GA32N (FirmwareVersion KE06) is made by HLDS and they have implemented riplock which slows the data speed way down to preserve SuperDrive life expectancy anddecrease noise level. How can I disable this riplock to restore the data speed. I bought this fast/expensive machine and the SuperDrive of all things is slowing medown. Completely unacceptable.

I was having a problem ripping store bought CD's to ITunes and opened a case with Apple for suspected hardware issue. Turns out the problem was Norton AntiVirus by Symantec which was blocking my external drives. Even though the CD is internal it was killing it. Once I shut off Norton everthing started working.
The way I came to figure out it was a Software and not hardware issue was that the Superdrive worked perfectly under Windows 7 inside of VMWare Fusiion.
If you have any sort of AntiVirus, try shutting and down and using the Superdrive.
My machine is the same , late 2011 with Firmware KE06

  • ITunes download speed

Im experiencing severe fluctuations in download speed from iTunes. One minute its fast and then it slows right down. Is anyone else experiencing this? doing it on my iPhone and PC. I have never had this problem before. Not sure if its iTunes or my ISP, but I can download web pages with no problems.

In the last month or two iTunes Store in the UK has become so slow that it's virtually useless at times, and I think it's probably ISP throttling to blame, but Apple may also have a hand in it.
Virgin Media in the UK openly throttles traffic according to a complex and ever-changing customer disservice policy http://www.virginmedia.com/traffic
However, I've studied the current Virgin throttling policy and it doesn't account for the abysmal iTunes Store download speeds we're experiencing. Specifically:
    - It is not unusual for my 100Mbps down Virgin service to actually run at close to rated speed, and it almost always tests (ookla speed test website, or FTP to a server with a gigabit internet connection at my company's UK data centre) at least 40Mbps down.
    - Virgin claims that "fair use" of my 100Mbps service is 10GB during the period 4-9pm, and that once I've used that they will throttle my download speeds by 50% for 5 hours.
    - It's not that unusual for me to exceed the 10 GB limit.
    - If Virgin's policy is to throttle me 50% from 100 to 50 I should be seeing something like 50 down. But actually I NEVER see that (even if I'm on a gigabit fibre connection at the office, so I think Apple DOES have some sort of throttling), but I do frequently see iTunes running at 18-20 down. So being throttled by Virgin from 100 to 50 should make no real difference.
    - HOWEVER, on my Virgin connection, evenings in the last 2 months I'm FREQUENTLY getting 2 Mbps OR SLOWER itunes downloads.
    - Now here's the rub: at the same time I'm being effectively prevented from using iTunes or Apple TV, I can run a speed test (or download a file from my data centre OR pull streaming video from a server at my data centre) at 20-60 Mbps.
SO... It appears that Virgin may be SELECTIVELY throttling iTunes and/or Apple is throttling us.
Anyone have any further input on this? Or corroboration?

  • Itunes download speeds

We recently switched from using the mobile phone network (dongle) for our internet to satellite internet with a wireless router.  Everything else has gotten faster except itunes and apple downloads which have become impossible.  A song takes over an hour and software updates take days.  Does anyone have any thoughts on why this would be and a solution?  Our itunes library is on an external drive and all the software was up to date until we changed internet service.

Also experiencing slow iTunes download tonight - have not had this issue previously.
I am also staring at a "Waiting..." badge for an iPad app to update, so perhaps there are performance issues ith AppStore also.
My Internet speed/connection is great ATM, except for iTunes/AppStore.

  • HT3176 How can the slow motion playback speed be adjusted on Apple TV (pause and clicking right/left)?

I am looking to adjust the paused slow motion playback speed of Apple TV. On one of my Apple Tv's when paused I can click right or left to view tv in frame advance (or one second advance) on a different Apple TV there does not appear to be any advance even after multiple clicks. But, it will jump 10 seconds when paused and left or right is held down as it should.
Third gen. (A1427) Apple TV Software version on both 7.0.3

Unfortunately with that speed you are not going to have a good experience with HD streaming. I would make sure everything is set to stream SD. Go into the settings - iTunes Store and you can switch there for any purchases/rentals made through them.
If you use Netflix (or other streaming sites) go into your account(s) and see if you can switch to a lower quality stream. I know Netflix has that in place.

  • Slow wifi download speeds on 3gs??

Is anyone else experiencing slow wifi download speeds?? I upgraded from a first gen iPhone to the 3gs & the first thing I noticed was downloading stuff from iTunes, app store, or YouTube, Takes forever!! Example... If I put both of my phones side by side, both connected to wifi, start downloading a 36 mb podcast at the same time, my first gen iPhone will finish the file in about 2 mins and my new 3gs will take anywhere from 8 to 10 mins. Is there a problem with the 3.0 firmware or is the problem just my phone?? Any help would be much appreciated!!

I'v been dealing all day on this issue, I upgraded to the 3GS model and my wife still has the 3g, I don't have the fastest network at my house (1.5 meg) but her phone is coming in about 1021kbps and mine is 241, which seem like a big difference, especially when trying to view youtube, apple store just gave me a new phone, and it still has the same problem. I reset it, restored it, replaced it, and after replacing it I did not restore from backup but still have the same issue. I do access internet via a time capsule for whatever thats worth, and I also checked with tech support about that being the problem and we found that to not be the problem. *****, I paid $300 and committed to AT&T for another 2 years, for internet at a quarter of the speed...

  • HT1577 iTunes download speeds

I have 20mb/sec download service, and can download from 'anywhere' at that speed, except iTunes.  iTunes runs about 1mb/sec.  Are the iTunes servers that slow?

  • Slowing down or speeding up music?

Iv tried numerous times to to slow down or speed up music, I assumed it was changing the tempo but that didnt work and now im at a loss of what to do, can someone help???

I do not understand how you are not getting results after adjusting the tempo in Master track. I do it all the time to listen to note lineup and such. Go to Master Track, look for tempo and either adjust the slider or highlight the actual numerical tempo and type a new tempo setting. This will speed up or slow down the recorded material.

  • Slow firewire 800 speeds on early 2008 macbook pro 17"

I've got an early 2008 macbook pro 17". I'm transferring files between a WD mybook studio II (2TB) configured as raid-1 to a sata dock with a seagate 1TB drive daisy-chained over firewire 800. both 1TB drives in the WD mybook and the 1TB seagate in the sata dock are 7.2k rpm. I'm running a block-level clone FROM the mybook TO the seagate using Carbon Copy Cloner which i would think would be the fastest real-world test i could do. I'm getting pegged speeds of 40MB/s. This is on par with other regular read/write speeds i've noticed in the past. this seems way off. to remove variables i unplugged my two firewire 400 drives (as i've heard that may slow things down, even though they're not doing anything during the clone) and it SLOWED DOWN the fw800 clone to 38MB/s ! plugging the two firewire 400 drives back in during the clone brought the speeds back up to 40MB/s. i don't have a unibody 2009 mbp that had the firewire issues.
    1) HDD's should read at 70-80MB/s and at least write at 59 MB/s, why am i not getting that using firewire 800 and two 7200 rpm drives ?? (i know the wd mybook is raid-1 but i'm reading from it...shouldn't effect read performance)
    2) (less important) why on earth would having two firewire 400 drives plugged in and inactive make the firewire 800 transfer speeds go up/down 2MB/s
i'm willing to experiment with anyone's suggestions. huge thanks in advance.

    i have a similar problem.
i have a new seagate freeagent 1tb drive w/FW800, FW400 and USB2.0 ports, and its connected via the FW800 port/cable to my macbook pro, and read/write speeds are really slow, particularly read speeds.
i'm currently working on an audio project with around 15 audio tracks running at once, and it chokes the drive ('HD overload' errors), so i've done some benchmark testing using Drive Genius and Xbench. the results show that the drive is averaging around 12mb/s read speed, and around 26mb/s write speed. grim.
i tried the drive with the FW400 connection on my missus' old imac g5, and its much faster than my mbp's FW800 connection, so i decided to try the drive back on my machine with OSX booted in Safe mode, and benchmark it again. the results are massively different; the FW800 connection is very fast (as you'd expect).
both the tests were done with all my peripherals attached (usb hub, ethernet cable, usb2 ext. drive) so i don't think the problem is with those.
what i'm wondering is if there are any known system extensions that can screw with the FW bus speeds? if not, any pointers as to where i should start troubleshooting?
    many thanks!

    Hello Mark Malecki,
Thanks for the question, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
I understand you are having some issues with iTunes on your MacBook. You may want to isolate the issues further by testing to see if they persist in a new user account:

  • Slowing the Particle Speed in After Effects Particle World?

Hi folks, does anyone know if there is a way to slow down the line particle speed in after effects?
I've already tried the Velocity and Gravity but these affect the shape and projectory of the particles, I'd like to just slow down the speed?
    Thanks

There are other particle systems that offer more control if you really need it. Expensive.
Build your main comp at a higher frame rate, render the movie, and bring it back into a 30fps comp. You can precompose and nest but the movie is generally easier to manage in your head. The highest frame rate I can use on my AE is 99fps. A more current version may offer higher frame rates.
