Slow iTunes Streaming..

Just a heads up... for whatever reason I was getting REALLY slow streaming for podcasts especially.. took 2-3mins to buffer enough to play.  This was happening for a few weeks.. resets, restarts etc, etc.. nothing worked..
I did a network test in Settings and next day streaming performance was back to normal... so worth a try if you happen to have this problem too!

Welcome to the Apple Community.
Intermittent problems are often a result of interference. Interference can be caused by other networks in the neighbourhood or from household electrical items.
You can download and install iStumbler (NetStumbler for windows users) to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.
Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel.
There are other types of problems that can affect networks, but this is by far the most common, hence worth mentioning first.

Can ATV2 serve as source for Airplay speakers?  I'd like to send non-iTunes streaming (e.g. Netflix movies) directly from ATV2 to Airplay wireless speakers.

No that's not currently possible sorry.

  • Older Apple TV and iTunes streaming problem

I've set up a Mac to act as an iTunes streaming host, mostly for standard-definition video.  Other computers and iOS devices on my home network can play back the content with no issues.  However, two older (hard disk based) Apple TVs we have are unable to play video from the iTunes streaming server.
One of the Apple TVs is connected via ethernet, the other via wifi.  They can play audio just fine via iTunes streaming.  With video, however, they either lock up for extended periods of time or play the audio while showing a frozen video frame.
Since audio plays back fine but video doesn't, I'm wondering if the video data rate is too high for these older Apple TV boxes.  The video is standard definition in h.264 format encoded by HandBrake.  The settings used for the video are:
    Video codec:  H.264 (x264)
    Framerate:  same as source
    Quality:  Constant quality (RF: 20)
Can anyone think of something I might be able to do (other than re-encode all the video at lower bitrates) that might help?

What bitrate are they, the Apple TV 1 is stated to play video up to 5 Mbps, but I've tested video at 11 Mbps without any problems. You might also try re-encoding a small part of the original source file using other conversion software at the same bitrate to see if it's a problem with handbrake.

  • Slow video streaming with WRT54GC v2.0

I have a WRT54GC v2.0 wireless router connected to a DSL modem. Connection speed when viewing web pages and downloading files from torrent is good but when streaming videos, it is very slow. Streaming video from youtube and other sites lags. I have tried it both on a laptop wirelessly conneced to the router and on a desktop wired to the router. When I connect the PC directly to the modem, everything works fine. Video playback is normal. What could be the problem with this one? I have already updated the firmware of my router.

I have already tried reconfiguring the router.
Someone advised me to use the mac address cloning. His explanation, my ISP is probably identifying the device connected to the DSL modem and if a router is identified, they limit the speed of connection.
I tried it and it went well for a couple of days. After that, it became slow again. I did not change any settings after that. I tried redoing what I did before and still do not work.

  • ITunes streaming to Airport Express - Gibberish error message

    Using
    - Airport Express (older 802.11G only model) with 6.3 firmware,
    - iTunes 9.2.1
    - Macbook 10.6.4 with all updates as of posting
iTunes streaming to Airport was working a few weeks ago, but now if I try to select the Airport as iTunes output speakers, iTunes takes a moment to try, then gives me this foreign gibberish as an error message:
    http://img715.imageshack.us/i/screenshot20100824at427.png/
    Anyone know japanese?

after spending an afternoon digging through this, I found the solution of adding a service triggered port as described here:
    http://forums.macworld.com/index.php?/topic/120307-airport-express-itunes-9x-err or-15006/page_p_778164&#entry778164
Although Apple should fix or at least correctly localize that crazy error message

    Hello Mark Malecki,
Thanks for the question, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
I understand you are having some issues with iTunes on your MacBook. You may want to isolate the issues further by testing to see if they persist in a new user account:

  • Does anyone experiencing slow iTunes download?

I experience slow iTunes download in last 24 hours, keep getting connection timeout error. I wonder if it is just me or the iTunes server is facing issue? Can anyone give me some clue? Thanks

Yes! Still experiencing that error right at the end of the download. Has been happening for a few days. Have tried connecting to a different internet service provider and still have the same problem. Telstra sayits not them, iTunes helpdesk says its not them. Just have to keep on trying for now.

  • Why can't itunes stream movie audio over airplay?

This is more a suggestion to Apple engineers rather than a request for assistance but any comments in support (or otherwise) are welcome.
So, it goes like this, I use my iMac as my TV, entertainment centre, etc at home and I stream audio from there to an Airport Express hooked up to my stereo. Using Airplay in iTunes and third party apps like Rogue Amoeba's Airfoil this works for just about anything: my music library, live TV through EyeTV and non DRM movies...but I like to download rental movies from iTunes and for some reason I can't stream audio from iTunes movies. I understand that this is a documented limitation of iTunes and Airplay, and there can be some issues with audio and video getting out of sync due to the buffering, but if Airfoil can do it, why not iTunes? The Airfoil video player is pretty basic, but it compensates for the buffering delay without any problems, and I can even use VLC to manually add a delay into the video track.
Would it be possible to include this as part of a future iTunes update? I mean, I'd much rather rent movies legitimately through iTunes than resort to other more nefarious means to be able to enjoy watching movies on my Mac. What's more, I have this pathological antipathy toward hooking things up with cables, so Airplay is the perfect solution for me and loads of other people as well, I'm sure.
So come on Apple, show you really do care about Airplay and let iTunes stream the movie audio so that I can enjoy my entertainment in High Fidelity.
    Thanks,
    Joe.

    Well, here's some good news!
Looks like a feature of Mountain lion that didn't make the front page solves my problem. To get movie audio over Airplay, on OSX 10.8 go to Audio and MIDI Setup app, make sure you have the Audio Setup window open (Window - Show Audio Window) and if your Airport or other Airplay device is online it should appear in the list of audio IO devices on the left hand side.
Right click on the Airplay icon and select "Use this Device For Sound Output" and away you go. iTunes (10.7 at least) seems to be smart enough to realise that it is playing audio to a streaming device and buffers the video accordingly. Viola! Glorious hifi sound sans wires.

  • Extremely slow podcast streaming in AppleTV

I have a second generation AppleTV and I have found that some video podcasts are extremely slow to stream to the point that it takes hours to get a 5 minute clip. If I try the same podcasts on my IPad or computer using the same wireless network, they are not slow and I can even use AirPlay to watch them on the TV. I have upgraded to the latest AppleTV software release. I don't seem to have the same issue when streaming Netflix movies or Apple movies. Has anybody encountered this same issue? Some  of the Podcasts I am having trouble with are: ESOcast HD, Hubblecast SD, NASACast Video.

    Hello,
I am relatively new to ATV2 and have experienced slow playing of videos and trailers. Here is some insight I found by trial and error, perhaps relative to your situation.
I have about 4000 high resolution photos shared (I noted elsewhere in the forum others with 20,000+ photos) and set my photos as the screensaver. Once I removed the photos from Home Sharing, movie trailers and videos ran without interruption.
Basically, I relieved some of the 8G memory buffer space which gave more room for streaming video.
    Hope this helps.

  • Slow YouTube streaming videos

Why is my iPad 2 slow at streaming YouTube videos? When I use my iPod touch under the same wi-fi network, it seems that it is faster than the iPad 2.

I have the same problem, my ipad3 was really fast, now it takes 3 days to download one episode of whale wars (40 min programme) and the internet connection is on and off. My Thinkpad is on the same WiFi network and is fast as ever (fiber optic).
Really bad, I almost binned the thing last night, it is now a very expensive photo frame. I have not used Apple products since 1996 and I thoiught I would have a go with the new Ipad. Clunky and unreliable as ever.

  • Airport Express - iTunes streaming and wireless bridge at the same time?

I know the Airport Express (AX) can do iTunes streaming. And I know it can act as a wireless bridge - meaning, a wired device can plug into the AX as if they were plugged directly into the local network.
What I am wondering - before I buy one - is whether the AX can do both at the same time. I have been reading around, and some people say it cannot, but I am getting the feeling that might be an older version perhaps.
Here is my set up -
    office:
cable modem > Airport Extreme 802.11n base station
    desktop computer
    family room:
DVD, TV, TiVo, etc. -- all would like a wired network connection
Stereo -- would like to stream iTunes from desktop computer
So can the AX stream iTunes to the stereo, AND serve up the network to the TiVo, etc. at the same time?
If so, I assume I can plug an Ethernet Switch into the AX and have it simultaneously service >1 device (e.g. TiVo, TV, etc.).
    Thanks a lot!

The newer 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn) can be setup in any of the following three configurations to enable its Ethernet port to provide network connectivity to wired clients:
    1) As a remote base station in a WDS with another 802.11b/g/n AirPort.
    2) As an extension to another 802.11n AirPort/Time Capsule.
    3) As a ProxySTA (Ethernet bridge) with any wireless router.
I have verified that it can support both performing as an Ethernet bridge and stream simultaneously for the first two configurations, but have not had an opportunity to try the last to verify that case as well ... but I believe it should.

  • Does itunes stream tv shows or do i have to download it first?

can itunes stream a tv show or do i have to download it first?  i did download one tv show and it took what seemed forever and i have a dsl commection. Amazon.com can stream the tv shows i purchase so i can watch them instantly. new to itunes with ipad2. please let me know.

All purchases from the iTunes Store are download, not streaming, though with an Apple TV, at least (not sure about computers and iPads), many movies and TV shows can be viewed before they have completely downloaded.
    Regards.

  • Possible solution to ATV2 slow library streaming.  iTunes movie buffering issues

    All,
I'm not a common user of forums so forgive ettiqute/nomenclature errors.
We were recently having issues with non-stop buffering when trying to stream movies from our iTunes library.  I've seem numerous topics and posts on this same issue.  Since we had just purchased the ATV2 we were able to call the apple care number and the tips we received made the difference.  I have to preface this by saying that we also use an Airport Extreme router.  The "helpdesk dude" had us do an "about this mac>more info>system report>WiFi".  Our transmit rate was 5 and it should be way way up there at the 100+ range(some lucky peeps get a 400-450 range I guess).   So if you are having these issue perhaps check the channel you are using and your strength of signal.  We changed channels and went to a transmit rate of 117 and our issues are resolved.  There is a signal/noise component aswell, but we ended up focusing on the transmit rate.  So take this for what its worth, hope it helps.

OK — I've gotten things resolved. Unplugged and replugged the ATV2 for a reset. Now everything streams just fine — even a rented iTunes movie from my Mac. Too, I have now gone into the ATV2 settings and instructed it to select standard (non-HD) movies for rentals. This is many times faster and on our large flat screen Sony, I see no difference. In any case, HD or not, the wise thing to do is to do your download well in advance of viewing — i.e. hours. The flash memory in the ATV2 should hold it for at least 48 hours (or so Apple Support tells me). As it turns out, "streaming", even with a 10 mb line and an "N" wireless system, streaming is not exactly streaming. But it comes closer to it if you select non-HD movies.

  • Slow movie streaming

I am curious as to why my Apple TV cannot stream a purchased movie in a reasonable amount of time. When I try to stream something from the Apple Store, it tells me it will take over two hours! If I try to stream from my computer in the next room running iTunes, it still takes forever to load. You may say that my network is slow, but if I want to watch a Netflix movie, it is almost immediate.

Netflix adapts to the network. iTunes content is at a fixed rate and needs to load a portion before playback occurs.
Yes, that will be related to the network. The fact that it continues on the computer also confirms this.
If you want to verify your current connection go to speedtest.net (HD needs at least 6mbps)

  • Extremely slow iTunes download

Recently, my iTunes has been EXTREMELY slow at downloading things as small as a podcast. I'm currently trying to download a podcast and it says that there is 24 minutes remaining on 88.2 MB podcast. Can anyone explain to me what's going on?

Oh, thanks! I also noticed that I can't listen to the 30 second samples any more because the stream always interrupts Seems to be a problem with iTunes Europe
Are there any more information available... when will the problem be solved (maybe some Apple employees are reading the Discussions too
