Slow/lagging performance while screen sharing in OS X.

I am running two "headless" '09 Mac Mini. I control them with Screen Sharing in OS X from my MacBook 2.1ghz & MacBook Air 1.6ghz. After 10.5.7, screen sharing is very slow in response. This is the same for all my Macs, not just the Mini. My wireless bandwidth is 14 mbps down & 8 mbps up so it is not my network connection. Please look into this.
Thank you,
Mike

This forum is for the exchange of information between Mac OS X customers. It is NOT a communications channel to Apple.
If you want to report this to Apple, then use one of the following methods:
<http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html>
<http://bugreporter.apple.com> Free ADC account needed for BugReporter
If you want fellow customers to take a stab at diagnosing this, please provide some additional information.
How are the systems connected? Ethernet, WiFi, over the internet (some or all of the above may apply)? A simple diagram such as
modem -- ethernet --> wifi base station
wifi base station -- 802.11n -> MacBook Air
wifi base station -- ethernet -> Mac mini A
wifi base station -- 802.11g -> Mac mini B
would be useful.
If over the internet, what method do you use to establish a remote connection, and did you have to make any special configuration setups to allow that connection?
If WiFi, is it 802.11b, 802.11g, or 802.11n. If 802.11n is 'n' working in the 2.4GHz or the 5GHz frequences (it matters).
If using the 2.4GHz frequences (802.11b, 802.11g and 802.11n in 2.4GHz mode) can all be affected by interference from neighbor's WiFi equipment using the same channel, 2.4GHz cordless phones, 2.4GHz baby monitors, microwave ovens (I'll discount the microwave oven unless you cook 24/7).
You can check on the neighbor's WiFi channel using with a utility such as
AP Grapher
iStumbler
KisMac
AirRadar
You should be able to find any of these utilities at
<http://versiontracker.com>
<http://macupdate.com>
What Mac OS X 10.5.7 installed on ALL the systems, or just the MacBook Air?
Besides upgrading to Mac OS X 10.5.7, have you made any other equipment changes (new router, new ethernet switch, moved equipment to a new location, played with any router configuration settings, etc...).
Actually some of this information would useful to Apple as well, if you should choose to report it to Apple.

  • I accidentally set a remote mac to "remote management" while screen sharing. Can I remotely reset it to screen sharing?

I accidentally set a remote mac to "remote management" while screen sharing. I did not realize that this set it to require the commercial Apple Remote Desktop application to get to it. Can I remotely reset it to screen sharing? It has disconnected me from accessing it using iCloud.

Good question, and I am not sure. I believe the remote login WAS checked, so if that is needed, I think that is a available, unless checking Remote Management unchecked Login.
I am not computer illiterate, but I am not a professional IT guy. I read about more subjects than I know. Back to My Mac should still be set up in iCloud and I have seen some discussion of using ssh with that, and I am gathering that you are talking about ssh when you talk of remote shell access?
    Thanks.

  • Certain apps crash when opened while screen sharing

Hello all, I'm looking to see if anybody else is experiencing what I'm experiencing.  I have a Mac Mini (MacMini2,1 - Core 2 Duo - Mid 2007) that I use as my families iTunes server.  This box runs as a headless device and serves up our iTunes library to all of the computers in the house.  After installing Lion on here, I have found that if I Screen Share to this box from one of the other Macs in the house and try and open certain apps (like App Store) or sometime even if I try and simply open a finder window they will crash.  The crash doesn't bring down the whole box, the apps simple crashes and I get the "report to apple / reopen" window.
I think the issue might be related to the GMA 950 and some driver issue with Lion but I can't be sure.  I do know that if I put a head (monitor) on this unit and try running apps natively (not remote over screen sharing) they work just fine.  One last piece I have noticed is when I am remoted in to the box and TimeMachine is backing up the screensharingd and screensharingagent are chewing up most (75%) of the available CPU.  This whole issue is very strange and I'm trying to decide if I should just blow this box away and start over?
Anyway, let me know if you have any ideas and or if you have seen something similar.

I am having a similar if not the same problem with my late 2009 Mac Mini running Mac OS X v10.7 Lion.  When I try to use remote desktop to it after it has gone to sleep, screensharingd will complain with:
screensharingd[45619]: 3891612: (connectAndCheck) Untrusted apps are not allowed to connect to or launch Window Server before login.
screensharingd[45619]: kCGErrorFailure: Set a breakpoint @ CGErrorBreakpoint() to catch errors as they are logged.
Apparently when the mac mini comes out of sleep there is something that causes the digital signature of the screen sharing app to be invalidated.  Perhaps a time of day issue or something similar is temporarily causing the app to show up as having an invalid digital signature and causing screensharingd to freak out and hang.

  • Mouse pointer/cursor clicking fails while screen sharing in Messages & iChat

Has anyone else had this problem?
My work partner is sharing her screen using iChat on OS 10.6.8 and I'm controlling it with Messages on OS 10.8.3 - usually working on Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop.
Every few minutes or so, I lose the ability to click anything on her screen. Audio/video works fine, and my keyboard commands run fine on her computer, I can usually even move the pointer fine but, clicking my mouse or trackpad has no affect on her computer. This is sometimes accompanied by a flashing stalled pointer.
We can usually fix it by having her click her mouse/trackpad a couple times and then I can continue with clicking again from mine.
But, sometimes she's not at the computer so there's no way for me to recover screen share clicking when her computer is unattended.
We both have high speed internet with 10+mb down and 5+mb up speeds.
I've also tried it with bluetooth off and still have the same problem.
Does anyone know how to recover from failed mouse clicking during screen sharing?
    Thanks.

    HI,
I have not see this but at the same time I do not Screen Share as extensively as you seem to describe.
One interpretation I could out on this from what you have written is that not only is your girlfriend getting bored and wondering Off  ( ) but her computer may also be going to sleep.
I have never waited long enough for one of my other computers to go to Sleep during a Screen Share to find out what happens.
    1) does the Share Screen go dark ?
    2) do you lose the connection as it closes the network ?
    3) Is a Screen Saver starting that you can see ?
    4) what does your girlfriend see when this happens ?
I would guess there is something about the VNC part of the iChat Screen Sharing that stops the Shared computer going to sleep.
However I am not sure if a Screen Saver can be active or if you are bumping into the time set for one to start.
I would also be interested in what the other computer is doing in a "behind the scenes" way.
Is something using up the Processor cycles and holding up the Share view as it were ?
I would guess her computer is doing something on it's own such as fetching Mail or similar or even the Time Machine Back up which can be known to cause the computer to be held up for a moment or two.

  • Black screen while screen sharing

I bought a Mac Mini about a month ago to replace an aging PowerBook as a file server and iTunes library. Up until today it has been absolutely fine, but as of today - with no change of software on the Mac Mini - Screen Sharing has stopped working.
The symtoms of the problem are that I can see and connect to the Mac Mini, but the shared screen window is totally black (apart from the cursor). Connecting from another Mac gives the same result, so I'm pretty sure the problem originates from the Mac Mini end, not the client. File sharing still works fine, and iTunes (which is an auto-launch item) also still works as I can use the Remote App on my phone to get it to play music and the AppleTVs in the house have no problem playing video.
I rebooted the Mac Mini (had to pull the plug, which I hated doing, since I couldn't see the screen) - but exactly the same problem when it restarted.
The Mini is running the latest version of 10.8 with only File Sharing and Screen Sharing turned on in the sharing prefs.
I've gone through this site and Google searches, but can't see anything that would apply to this situation.

  • Slow graphics performance - login screen, launchpad, full screen video all stutter

Since installing Mavericks, I've found that several system animations are slow/stutter. This is on a 2012 MacBook Air with maxed out hardware specs so its not b/c I'm running an old system.
    Some examples:
    - When booting up, right before I reach the login screen, the display quickly flashes blue. This leads me to believe something funky is going on with my graphics card/drivers
    - The login animation, where you click your username and it floats to the middle of the screen so you can type in your password, is very jerky, taking 2+ seconds to complete. Previously it had been fast and smooth
    - When using Launchpad, expanding folders often takes several seconds. The folder will start to expand, freeze, and then finally finish. This tends to be more of a problem for folders with 1 row of icons. Large folders oddly seem to expand ok / smoothly
    - Watching full screen video in iTunes causes the audio to stutter (the video playback is still smooth). If I make the window smaller, audio and video playback are smooth again
Is anyone else experiencing these kinds of graphics issues? Any idea whats going on or how to fix?

Quit Chrome and see whether there's any change. If not, see below.
    Step 1
When you notice the problem, launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the View menu or the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for User, System, andIdle at the bottom of the window.
Select the Memory tab. What value is shown in the bottom part of the window for Swap used?
Next, select the Disk tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
    Step 2
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combinationcommand-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

  • Copy and paste while screen sharing

While screensharing during an ichat session with my mum, I'd like to copy a URL from my mum's Safari address bar to my computer. Is that possible?

    Hi Gil,
Not a problem  (I actually had to Check first)
I have not mentioned iChat 6 as I don't have a version in front of me (Although my son has Upstairs - and he was not here when I posted yesterday)
    The iChat 4 Help says
This does require some manual dexterity.
Defcom's solution is a lot more elegant with the features iChat has.

  • Switch Screens while Screen Sharing

    Hi
I'm wondering if there's a keyboard shortcut that allows you to switch between the local and remote screen instead of clicking on the miniaturized screen.
Another thing I couldn't find was a way to share screens, yet disallow the guest party to control the mouse and do keyboard strokes (sort of "view only mode").
    Any ideas?
    Thanks! -sven

    Hi,
iChat Help does not describe anything for the first.
I have not discovered anything either.
The second is a bit different the local computer tends to hold on the the mouse/cursor if constantly on the move. but generally no there is no way to do this either.

  • Screen sharing questions

    Merry xmas everyone.
I have a few questions I hope you can answer.
I just discovered screen sharing between my mac mini and macbook laptop via a physical ethernet connection using a linksys router (no wifi).
I go to the finder and see the other computer and click share screen, and it shows up beutifully. But without asking for a user name and password. I tried logging in from a guest account and it then asked me for a user name and password. So just to make sure for my peace of mind, both machines have the exact same user name and password (and .mac account), so is that the reason they can both connect to each other easily without the need to verify.
Is this share screen even possible via wifi (using Finder and not ichat)? Or just via a hard line connection?
2nd... is there a way to share the audio between both machines? My overall goal is to connect to my main computer from my laptop from my night stand so I can listen to my podcast, and have them marked as listened to, so that I don't have to wrestled with keeping two podcast libraries on two different machines sync to my ipod... ugh.
plus i won't have to drop the extra cash on an ipod dock.
    Thanks
have a great new year everyone

    1. While screen sharing is it possible to drag a document from the remote screen to the computer you are using?
No, but if you use iChat as your screen sharing tool you can copy the file(s0 manually that way. In Finder you could also simply both screen share and mount the filesystem of the mac.
    2. Does screen sharing work over the internet (like web sharing)?
Not using the direct screen sharing abilities. But if the mac you're trying to control is set up to be accessed from the internet (with afp://) then you should be able to enter that address into the "New..." menu item window in the screen sharing application. The application is at: /System/Library/CoreServices.

  • Any Better  Screen Sharing VNC alternative ?

just stat to use Screen Sharing to control my other PCs at home ,
not sure is it some setting problem or what.
Every time Screen Sharing first start it will run fine, but after a while screen sharing will fail to refresh the remote computer screen at the mean time still having control the remote PC it just don't refresh the screen or don't refresh completely.
so is there any thing i can do to improve SS ? or is there any other VNC viewer for OSX , the only free viewer i find is Chicken of the VNC it had very limited function.
    any suggestion is welcome
    thx

Apple's screen sharing is the most compatible solution, though any VNC viewer should work. Most are rather buggy and Chicken of the VNC was the best that I came across. The best is "Apple Remote Desktop", but you have to purchase it. From my experiences the screen sharing is the best alternative to ARD.

  • JavaFX Stage Paint issues when Mac Screen Sharing

When using Mac's screen sharing application you have to force a stage resize in order to see the Scene content. I don't have this issue when running native Mac apps while screen sharing, only JavaFX applications.

PS, also running Netbeans 7.1.2 gives the same results. I'll post a thread on the Open JDK forum for the mac as well.

  • Jdbc thin driver bulk binding slow insertion performance problem

    Hello All,
We have a third party application reporting slow insertion performance, while I traced the session and found out most of elapsed time for one insert execution is sql*net more data from client, it appears bulk binding is being used here because one execution has 200 rows inserted. I am wondering whether this has something to do with their jdbc thin driver(10.1.0.2 version) and our database version 9205. Do you have any similar experience on this, what other possible directions should I explore?
here is the trace report from 10046 event, I hide table name for privacy reason.
Besides, I tested bulk binding in PL/SQL to insert 200 rows in one execution, no problem at all. Network folks confirm that network should not be an issue as well, ping time from app server to db server is sub milisecond and they are in the same data center.
    INSERT INTO ...

    total 2 0.02 14.29 1 94 2565 200

    SQL*Net message to client 1 0.00 0.00
    SQL*Net message from client 1 0.00 0.00
    ********************************************************************************

I have exactly the same problem, I tried to find out what is going on, changed several JDBC Drivers on AIX, but no hope, I also have ran the process on my laptop which produced a better and faster performance.
Therefore I made a special solution ( not practical) by creating flat files and defining the data as an external table, the oracle will read the data in those files as they were data inside a table, this gave me very fast insertion into the database, but still I am looking for an answer for your question here. Using Oracle on AIX machine is a normal business process followed by a lot of companies and there must be a solution for this.

  • Screen Sharing Insecure

When I ran a screen sharing session with a friend, he had control of my screen. I couldn't find an option to limit access to my system while screen sharing. Anyone know where it is? Or does apple still have to implement some form of option for that?

that's just what screen sharing is for. if you don't want it, disable screen sharing in system preferences->sharing or keep it enabled but don't give out your password to friends.

I'm not sure what you mean. when someone is sharing your screen you get a scrrensharing menu icon and you can stop a screen sharing session from there. is this what you are asking?
