Slow Leopard

Hi there
Ever since installing the 10.6.1 update, my computer cannot run Mail and Safari at the same time, I get the beach ball cursor every 10 seconds and it lasts for about 10 seconds. Then I press AltCmdEsc and then Safari is not responding in red and as soon as I quit Safari, Mail is also not responding in red.
I can't believe I am having such trouble with Snow Leopard, it is about 3 times slower that Leopard was right now.
Does anybody else have this issue? I can't work anymore, I am fed up.

Ok, so I deleted Envelope Index and the RSS folder. Opened Mail again, now Mail wanted to re-download all my mails as I use IMAP with GMail (2 accounts, 9000 mails), and that would take about 300 hours, rough estimate by Mail. I am not willing to re-download every mail that is already on my computer, it is out of the question and I won't delete some of my mails for this issue.
Anyway, I restored Envelope Index to its original folder and restarted Mail again. Mails were back though, obviously, except RSS feeds as the RSS folder from /Users/myName/Library/Mail was currently in the trash. Still Mail was uselessly slow, so I decided to put the RSS folder back in its original place.
Anybody have another solution for me? I use Mail 24/7 and are picking my hair out one-by-one because of this issue. I can't believe the trouble I am having with one of the most basic apps Apple has, is Steve back at the office yet? If not, STEVE WE NEED YOU!!!! PLEASE THIS IS RIDICULOUS, everything worked fine till the 10.6.1 update and I don't know what to do. I am scared of losing my mails and having to download all mails again. And my POP mails will be lost because I don't leave a copy on the server.
BTW: I have two IMAP accounts and two POP accounts on Mail right now, but that has NEVER been an issue. So clearly, something went wrong between 10.5.(11 was it? oh well, the last update) and 10.6.1.

  • Slow Leopard Takes forever to open MS Office 2008

Over the last few weeks/months, I have noticed that it is taking minutes (NOT Seconds) to open MS Office Apps (Excel, Word, Entourage). This has now become very, very annoying and wondering if there is something I can do to fix this.
Or do I wait for Snow Leopard to replace Slow Leopard.
    Please help.

    Greetings,
It should not take minutes, but it will take a few seconds, to load. I have used Office 2004, and 2008 - they both work fine for me, and always have. I'd say that Office 2008 loads up Excel in about 15 seconds, and that''s with email up, and maybe one browser instance. I just did it, and it was 17 seconds to load Excel and be ready to enter data.
Do you have enough memory, and are you loading an excessive number of apps? Look in your account profile and see what you're starting there. Also are you indexing, is Time machine running, or any other activity going on when you are trying to load Office?
Find out what is running a the time you are trying to load Office.
    Cheers,
    M.

  • Slow Leopard, possible plan of attack...

I have Leopard running on an iMac G5 1.8 GHz PPC with 2 GB of ram. My Canon LiDE 35 scanner and Canon iP6600D printer work fine. But Leopard is much slower on my system than Tiger.
Plan of attack: 1. create a bootable backup of Leopard 10.5.1
    2. erase and install Leopard
    3. bring over apps, docs, etc from firewire HD during install
    4. update to 10.5.1
Sound OK? Feel free to give suggestions to help my slow Leopard OS.

I'm glad it worked out well.
The idea of starting in Safe Mode is that it runs a directory check and eliminates everything but Apple installed startup items, fonts other than System/Library and other items. It often helps to isolate an issue. (But not his time).
The re-install you did was probably best and easiest way to handle it. When you update use the 10.5.1 Combo Update This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update (the one from software update) so it should overwrite any files may still be damaged or missing.

  • Slow Leopard after update

Every single time I do an update Leopard is very slow the next two or three startup's (boot).
And the Download stack in the Dock don't show any preview of e.g. movie files.
    Why is this?

  • "Slow" Leopard with bonus mouse issues!

I have a Mac Mini at work, and ever since upgrading it to Snow Leopard, it's been driving me insane. I haven't had time to deal with it, so I've gotten used to all the annoying performance issues I'm having. Simply put, Snow Leopard is super slow, or "dopey" as I like to say. Every thing I do (EVERYTHING) happens slowly. Here are a few examples of what I'm dealing with. Switching between apps takes too long, from many seconds to minutes for an app to "wake up" again. When I click Print in Numbers, the print window takes up to a minute to appear, and then another 10-20 seconds before I can actually click print. As an added bonus, the mouse does a couple of "nifty" things on a regular basis. The first thing it does is it "locks" the left-click as if I'm holding down the button. I have to click it again to "release" it, so a lot of the time, I'm clicking the mouse three times just to do one click. The downward scroll also stops working intermittently. Now take the goofy mouse and mix it with the dopey leopard, and you've got yourself a wacky guessing-game! Is the mouse button locked or am I just waiting for the dopey leopard to wake up? Let's click again and see what happens! Maybe the pinwheel will show up, or maybe an open window will move halfway off the screen. Or better yet, maybe I'll delete two emails instead of just the one I wanted to! Weee! And by the way, the mouse issues happen whether I'm using a wired USB Mighty Mouse, wireless Mighty Mouse, or a Magic Mouse. Every once in a while, I get brief glimpses of the real Mac Mini - everything zips along beautifully for a couple minutes - but then it goes back to "dopey" mode. I don't even know who this Mac is anymore. My seven-year-old iMac at home works better than this thing. It doesn't do much anymore, but at least it shows me some respect.

How full is the hard drive?
Try resetting the PRAM. Info here:

  • Snow Leopard or "Slow Leopard"?

Since I installed the latest update of Snow Leopard and Safari 5, my Mac Book Air is incredibly slow. 40 minutes to switch users, (I think Apple called it "fast user switching' originally). 5 minutes to save keynote, and so on. Anybody got a solution to this?

I've seen various ways to solve this but it's difficult to suggest solutions without more info.
Launch Activity Monitor before switching to see what is eating resources.
What login items do you have active? Check in Sys Prefs-Accounts-Login items tab.
Try disabling Fast User Switching, then reboot and then enable it again.
Here are some suggestions from Apple when 10.6 is slow.

Come back with more info or questions.

  • Mac OS X 10.6.1 SLOW Leopard issue. Is it just me?

When I first loaded Snow Leopard, everything was fine. Faster, in fact. Since then there's been an a upgrade or two and I don't know what happened but my iMac is positively CRAWLING. I see the multi-colored spinning wheel more often in an hour than I have in the last two years. I dumped alot of extra space in external storage, did full system sweep, reset and repaired permissions- all of that - and all I have a is a very pretty, very SLOW 17" desktop iMac. What gives?!?!?

Have you installed the recent Performance Update 1.0 ?
Repair Permissions before and after installation.

  • Extremely slow Leopard 10.5 since reinstall

I recently did a clean reinstall of Leopard onto my 20in iMac (iSight).  However, since then it is extremely slow.  Before doing the re-install, I backed everything up to Time Machine.  The only information I then transferred back was the network connection etc, as I wanted a clean installation.
The aim of the re-install was to clean the machine up and, therefore, make it faster.  In fact, it has had the opposite effect.  Internet pages load slowly and an attempt to download a file (Quicktime from the Apple site) of 70 MB only reached about 58Mb after one hour.  I then downloaded the same file onto my MBP and transferred it to the iMac by USB stick.  This took over 2 minutes.
A restore of iTunes from Time Machine is currently forecasting about 40 minutes to transfer 81GB; this doesn't seem bad compared to the Internet download or USB stick.
Can anybody please advise what to do?

hi i had your exact same problem
only thing that could solve this was backing up my files and do a clean install, and then update back again
and now everything works just fine

  • Very slow Leopard start-up on my G5

    Hi everyone
I have just installed a Seagate harddrive as my new systemdrive on a Powermac G5(the late 2005 IBM model)
    The Problem!
It takes about 40 seconds from pressing the powerbutton to the Applelogo appeares on the screen, and the full boot-up to my user log-in takes 1 min. and 30 seconds... that is a very long time!!! (compared to other, and smaller machines)
The system is 10.5.1, installed on a clean and brand new Seagate HD.
The Hardware test from the orig. system disk, shows NO sign of any hardware problems, (btw. a very long hardwaretest about 1 hour and 40 min)
I removed the optional ram, but same problem
A "Bench" test on the machine gives a good result compared to another smaller G5, but the new harddrive has a very very bad performance, only around 20% of the other machines HD(a matrox drive, like the one in my machine before the change)

Does the slow start up, got anything to do withe the new hardrive...or do I have more than one problem on my G5??
    Hope you can help???

I have the same problem too after the 10.5, done all the erase and install with only little help.
It is running quite slow on iPhoto's photo editing with few crashes.
Is this telling me that it is a right time to sell my G5 and go for Mac Pro?

  • 2011 27" iMac cannot boot from a slow leopard install DVD

I just got a new iMac 27". It came with Lion preinstalled. I wanted to install Snow Leopard on the 2nd hard drive and it wont let me boot from the DVD or run the Snow Leopard install from the DVD when running under lion. When I try to boot from the DVD I get a kernel panic. I am also having problems with computer not waking from sleep. I think I should return this computer as defective. Anyone else have this kernel panic problem?

As stated, you can't use SL on the Mac, so the kernel panics should subside if you're not trying to boot from SL. However, there are plenty of other posts re. freezing/not waking after sleep.
So, if you do want to run SL, you could try to find one that still has SL installed (and you'd get the free upgrade to Lion) - there are quite a few refurbished units at the Apple Store. If you're within the 14 days and purchased it at an Apple store, you can return it and could order a refurb with SL (or find a new one at a reseller who bought up the left over stock). That's what I've usually done.

  • Overall very slow leopard 10.5.5 function

I have recently bought a 2.6 Ghz core 2 duo, 4 GB Ram macbook pro... I thought this should be a very fast machine but it turned out to be as as fast as my old 1.6 Ghz core duo, 1 GB ram...all the applications takes ages to launch and the wheel always spins for no apparent reason. I have updated to 10.5.5 recently and I have a new problem: it takes ages now for the computer to boot into the login screen...I did all kind of repairs (permission and disk) and than did an archive and install to no avail. below is a copy of my console (kernel filtered) immediately after login:

I have been testing a number of Draft N routers ... and the Netgear was the least compatible with various clients.
In particular ... it was VERY incompatible with my Intel MacBook which I believe uses the same Atheros chipset as the MacBook Pro.
I have found that the AEBS is by far the most compatible of Draft N wireless routers.

  • Painfully slow internet after upgrading to Snow Leopard

hi all, i recently upgraded to Slow leopard.
My internet has soon become painfully slow, taking (literally) minutes to load pages. I have checked my modem & router, they seem to be fine as my iPhone & Vista laptop run perfectly on the same network.
does anybody know what this could be?

If you have not done so since upgrading to Snow Leopard, you should run Disk Utility and use +Repair Disk Permissions+.
Have you used Software Update to apply Apple's latest updates after upgrading to Snow Leopard. If there are updates, you should run it a second time to ensure there were no dependent updates.
As a test, you can create a new admin user account in System Preferences Accounts pane.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/8235.html
Log out and log in to the new account. Try the things that caused the problems. Is it fast in the new account, or is it the same? If it is fast, then the cause is likely to be in your normal user account. If it is the same, then the cause is likely to be with the overall system (the OS).
You can also try doing a Safe Mode startup
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455
This will do some maintenance during startup and also load only Apple's essential system extensions and processes. Any third party software you have installed will not automatically run. Check the performance while in safe mode, and if there is improvement, restart normally to see if the problem comes back or not.

  • Can we please have a FINAL solution to slow internet in Snow Leopard?

I've read so many discussions but none of the proposed solutions work for me.
I installed Snow Leopard a few days ago and ever since internet pages take forever to load.
Before SL my internet was running perfectly. I have the same strength connectivity, my router didn't budge and I didn't even move my laptop location. I'm convinced it is SL and I am not happy that I may have to uninstall it and have wasted $30.
I also couldn't believe that there is no way to contact Apple in a way they can respond. They're just leaving the solutions up to regular users and maybe offering an update if a few million people complain.
Anyways, does anyone have a solution to Slow Leopard?

  • MacBook Pro 15 early 2011 slower than it must be...!!!

    Hello everybody,
I have an MacBook Pro 15 early 2011, 2.2 Ghz, 4 RAM... It is running Mavericks 10.9.5, the latest update... The Etrecheck statistics seems to be very fine. So, here are some good and interesting questions: Why does my Mac work not that fast as it was on Slow Leopard? Why do I wait around 25-30 seconds to run Microsoft Office Document? Why the operating system is booting around 60 seconds? Why when I use software like MatLab, it turns that is not so possible to switch between the apps really fast, because multitasking freezes?
At the beginning, when I installed Mavericks 10.4.1, I thought that it is not enough RAM, after I read some comments from people that are using 2009 MacBooks running Mavericks and everything is fine, I canceled this possibility. Then I thought that my HDD is dead, I checked it 1000 times, its fine... So, the question is: what could it be, slowing my mac???
I plan to increase my RAM to 16 GB, but I am really not sure if it will help, because mavericks has another algorithm of RAM usage...
Really hope to hear some logical answers!

Remove "MobileGo," or else refer to its developer for support.
Any third-party software that doesn't install by drag-and-drop into the Applications folder, and uninstall by drag-and-drop to the Trash, is a system modification.
Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job.
I never install system modifications myself, and except as stated in this comment, I don't know how to uninstall them. You'll have to do your own research to find that information.
Here are some general guidelines to get you started. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickMyMac” (a hypothetical example.) First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickmymac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, contact the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickMyMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickMyMac.” If not, open “BrickMyMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button. The uninstaller might also be accessed by clicking the Customize button, if there is one.
Back up all data before making any changes.
You will generally have to restart the computer in order to complete an uninstallation. Until you do that, there may be no effect, or unpredictable effects.
If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase and install OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.
Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" such as "AppCleaner" and the like that purport to remove software.

  • Very Slow Internet Lion (This one is for the "Apple Network Team")

    hello,
    i'm joão from Portugal, Europe.
a couple of weekends ago i've updated three macs to Lion.
    2009 MacMini, 2007 White Macbook, 2010 iMac 21".
    problems? only with the iMac.
no connection drops but slow slow slow very slow internet. wired, speedtest marked 15Mbps download. wireless? 1Mbps, 0,3Mbps, 3Mbps, very unstable.
with Snow Leopard everything was ok.
tried every solution from every site and finally got it working flawlessly.
tried clean install instead of update.
    tried new dns servers.
    tried disabling ipv6.
tried remove wifi interface then add it again.
    tried service order.
tried PRAM, NVRAM, SMC, you name it, reset.
    tried removing preferences folder.
tried different browsers -> same symptoms.
    tried disable/enable airport.
    tried 10.7.1, 10.7.2, combo, delta.
    tried router's firmware update.
tried putting the computer closer to the router.
tried resetting the router, factory defaults.
    tried changing router's channel.
    tried disabling router's firewall.
tried watch router's event log, nothing suspicious.
    tried disabling router's wep password.
tried pinging a site for a couple of minutes, 2% packet loss.
tried hundreds of pages and forums...
during this attempts, macmini and macbook showed very good wireless internet speed.
iMac? slow, slow, slow, slow, slow, like seeing gmail's loading screen for more than one minute...
    again and again speedtest 1Mbps, 0,3Mbps, 1Mbps, 1Mbps, 0,3Mbps, 3Mbps.
discovered the pingtest utility in the same site and iMac's ping was grade C, grade F, grade D, with big values...mac mini and macbook were alwas grade B, with low pings (imagine 25ms on them vs. 138ms on the iMac).
i was fed up with the situation, every week tried and failed. iMac's owner was wanting to get his Lion money back and stick to Snow Leopard again. imagine recent Windows switchers thinking they went back to the same situations....
but then i found this website. and then realised macbook and macmini's wi-fi were both powered by a broadcom chipset. iMac's was powered by an Atheros chipset! did what the guy says on that site (replaced Lion's Atheros kernel driver by the one on Slow Leopard), and now everything is perfect, like on Snow Leopard. very good speed.
what a relief. thank you sir.
    hope it can help you.
hope it reachs apple's network developers...this is not good, you can't fail on something so simple and essential as decent wifi quality...

    humm...
i've clean installed one macbook (late 2008?) and one mac mini (early 2009) both with broadcom adapters and both of them were ok, after the install.
so, speedtest and pingtest are websites (speedtest.net and pingtest.net), both test your internet connection with the help of a 'local' server. it's useful, for instance, if you want see if two different computers connected to the same router have the same connection quality.
so if you can connect to some routers nicely and you have problems with your router, to me, it seems like you have some problems with the connection between your computer and the router.
an old router might bring you problems (there are some advices on the internet to change router's channel and so...), i would recommend to see if motorola has some sort of firmware update to your router. if you don't have complex router configurations, you might try to reset to factory defaults (search the manual). that, once, fixed a problem with a smc router and two macbooks (one, older, could connect easily, the other wouldn't connect to the router).
if that atheros driver trick, resolved your issue, that's strange
make sure broadcom isn't your ethernet adapter and not your wireless adapter
did you resetted your pram and smc? do you  have Mac OS 10.7.2?
i hope you can figure that out.
