Slow Lion

I was wondering whether anyone else is experiencing Lion as slow.  The install went fine but generally my MacBook Pro is slower with more multi-colored spinning wheels than I had seen before.  It just seems like it is lagging overall.  If anyone has any suggestions that might speed it up, I would appreicate your help.
I have a MacBook Pro, running Mac OS X 10.7, 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo and 4 GB of memory.
Thank You.

This is what I did and it seems to have been successful:
Open Disk Utilities
Run Verify Disk->Use Repair Disk if necessary.
Run Verify Permissions->Run Repair Permissions.  I had a lot of errors.
Spotlight will reindex your disk, let it do it without opening a bunch of applications.
If necessary, restart your computer holding the alt-option key down, choose Recover and run Disk Utilities from there.  I did not need to do that.
Tell me if this works for you.

  • So disappointed with the slow Lion performance & don't know what to do

I am an apple fan and I'm expressing my sincere disappointment! I guess those people who gave Lion 4-5 stars either installed it on their brilliant macbook pros or on those huge imacs or haven't used it before voting! I have a 2GB ram macbook and after installing lion it's gone terrible. Even text edit which is relatively a very light programme is not functioning many times!
I care about Apple and I think if they don't do something asap it's gonna turn to their version of Vista and change the OS game's balance.
I'm thinking of going back to Snow Leopard, that was way much faster. One funny thing is on AppStore it doesn't let me review the product saying you should have bought it from AppStore. Well of course I bought it from AppStore and you have it in your records, why don't you let me save others from this disaster. It takes a lot of my time now to go back to Snow Leopard. Honestly, with all due respect, and not in an angry mood Lion is bad! And makes your computer run much slower. DISAPPOINTED

Apple says 2gb of ram is the minimum needed for lion. If you have an older machine and just the minimum ram lion will be slower than SL. I worked with a friend who had a MacBook model with minimum ram. When he upgraded the ram to 4gb his machine was about 40% faster.
Memory is relatively inexpensive these days so you might consider buying some to get to 4 or 8 gb.

  • Slow Lion - really high virtual memory use

Lion is running really slow on both my Mac Mini and my Mac Book Pro. Both systems are less than two years old, both with 4 GB of RAM. I checked Activity Monitor (right after restart, running Chrome, Mail, and iTunes only) and I get a VM size of 266.42 GB! Is this normal? And could this be the reason why it seems so dreadfully slow?

    budusa,
Take a really deep breath and let it out. Relax. The universe is ok.
You have to step back at look at what your data is showing you.
    Physical Memory: 4 GB
Virtual Memory: 266.42 GB  < notice this larger than your physical.
Note the amount of memory used by your system, Wired, 675.4 MB. From what I understand so far of how OS X lion uses memory is that your system is using less a 1 gigabyte of memory.
Now note the amount of Inactive memory, 535.7 MB. I bet if you looked for the processes you used the amount they where accessing would equal that amount.
Also note your Active memory used, 1.52 GB. That was currently being used at the moment of your snapshot. Note also it could reflect was used recently also.
Ok, now look at your Free memory, 1.30 GB.
And the last part, the Used, 2.70 GB.
Do you notice something yet? Do you see it?
Ok, you have 4 GB of Physical RAM installed.
According to your information you used only, roughly, 2.70 GB of Physical RAM.
That means you used 2.70 of 4 GB of physical RAM.
Now if you notice your free memory, 1.30 GB.
    If you take 2.70 - 4 = 1.30 < notice the answer, Free memory, 1.30 GB.
Basically your system used 2.70 GB of 4 GB to run the applications listed.
Look at your Virtual Memory, 266.42 GB. Notice it larger than 2.70 GB?
My understanding of how a 64 bit OS works, and the key item why it works better than 32 bit, is the Virtual Address Space. This is how the OS allows programs to run with out taking up all the physical memory. The programs go there to play as I like to say. Another way to look at it is do want only 4 GB's or 8+ Terabyte's of Virtual Address Space?
So, the Virtual Memory you see is ok and is normal.
Do not follow some advice I have seen here about switching programs to run in 32 bit mode. You defeat the purpose of 64 bit.
If you system is running slow then look at your installed programs. Note also that if you have a small hard drive it can cause sluggishness too.
I hope this helped. Maybe it confused. Sorry for making it long as I did.

  • Slow Lion/MBP

The same with me.  I've tried all the recommendations, verify disk, repair permissions, and I even backed it up and installed it from the original factory settings, installed Onyx, etc.  My version of Lion is not an upgrade and I'm using a brand new Macbook Pro that is only one month old.  I don't have a lot of photos, videos, and third party software.  This computer was slow out of the box, especially when using the internet.  It doesn't seem to matter whether I use Safari or Firefox.  My daughter has an older Macbook Pro with Snow Leopard and she has no issues.  I'm so frustrated and sorry I sold my old Macbook Pro.

  • Slow Lion Animations

I've got a mid-2011 21.5" iMac and today after I download Thunderbolt Software Update, Lion animations became very slow and sluggish, any help?

Nope, all you have to do is:
    Lunch the Mac App Store
hold down the OPTION key and click on PURCHASES tab
You can see the OSX Lion and the gray Install Button.
If you do this correctly, there will be a "Install Mac OS X Lion" app in your application folder!

  • Slow Lion Time Machine- 465,335 days remaining...

I have the early 2011 15 macbook pro.  I am trying to do a time machine backup to a firewire connected drive.  First timemachine backup on this empty drive.  Lion logs everything out and the backup fails if I leave for more than 20 minutes.  For the second time, backup failed because of not being able to index a file in the developer applications.  Earlier the backup of 400 GB across a firewire 400 was slated for 5 hours.  After the failure and restart it was slated for three days... erased the external and started again - but then another backup error at indexing.
Now a fourth attempt this one will be finished in 465,335 days.
I don't think this is funny.  If Steve Jobs was still around I don't think he would sit back and let this happen.  Looks like I won't be waitng for 1,273 years after all - another file indexing failed, on the iphone simulator software.
After many years of boosting mac to my friends, I am saddly going to have to start looking for alternatives.  I expect more for the price I paid.

Hey Marlin, yes you are correct, it was not a question (I unchecked the "is this a question" checkbox)
Partly this is my method of documenting my (unfortunately many) issues with my 2011 15" macbook pro, and I think this is a better venue than shouting frustrations at the sky.
The external hard drive is a iomega 500Gb with room to spare, formated as Mac OS extended.  Disk utility finds no problems before running time machine.  After a failed time machine there were errors found, and I reformated and tried again.
The most frustrating thing is that the mac logs me out of the computer if I leave it alone while doing a time machine backup, causeing it to stop the back up!  I have turned off the automatic log out in settings, but it still logs me out.  This happens every time on a first time time machine backup.
Also really cool is the screen I see when I wake the computer - I call it the 'scratch away' screen, since moving the mouse 'scratches' away either black or a desktop.  Ill see if I can attach a screenshot for you.
<hmmm cant seem to attach a 1.8 Mb foto taken with my iphone... click insert imager and nothing>
I will also include my console errors incase that helps.  I have noticed the indexing fails on different files each time.

  • MDS, slow Lion and the missing memory

    Hi;
Updated to Lion a week ago, and apart of a couple apps that needed to be retired (PPC), here is my dilema:
The iMac (4gb) starts to slooow down to a crawl and I cannot use more than one app at a time. Open large files in Photoshop?, forget it. I got Safari on, and iStats shows free memory just dissapearing: from 4gb to 200megs (Same for PS and iTunes). Activity confirms it,...
I'm seeing a lot of posts with the same problem, no solution.
    Anybody that could help?. Thanks

Lion has sophisticated new memory management. I don't know iStat understands it. You mentioned MDS but didn't discuss it. Run Activity Monitor and see which processes are using the CPU and "Real mem".

  • Lion OS - Apple's CATwalk ... in slow motion.

Worse waiting ... I have bought last weekend the latest MacBook Pro i5 with Lion OS.
Speed wise, based on a 3.5 years old MacBook, I was expected to experience a 'real' difference ... Thanks to Lion and its 'fashion' ways to display/run applications as basic as ical to iPhoto (heavier), it slows down the ENTIRE machine.
I cannot find a way to change the setting and minimize all these 'good looking' activities (ie: do we really need to see the page turning on iCal?! do we really need to see email flying on mail?!) to more efficient way.
Using my mac to work, wasting so much time, is very, very, very frustating ... Almost feel like going back to Snow Leopard to get the Job done.
For the next Lion's update, it will be appreciated if we can have an option to cancel all these options, that are only slowing down a great beast.
    Thank you.

PS - Shame after Snow Leopard to move to Slow Lion...
PPS - If we can have iSync as well!

A 3.5-year-old MacBook is probably skirting right along the lower edge of the system requirements.  That's never a good idea.  I don't have such a machine to test with, but Lion works well on my newer machine.  One gotcha...  I've noticed that it seems to get bogged down in high-memory-use situations that didn't cause SL problems.  My machine's memory use definitely indicates that it needs more RAM now, so I'm upgrading it to 8 GB (as soon as the RAM arrives on my doorstep).
If your machine isn't maxed out on RAM, do so now.  Otherwise, follow some of the basic tips provided by the Mac OS X Speed FAQ.  If nothing helps, revert to Snow Leopard and hold off on Lion until you've got newer hardware to run it on.

  • Why is my finder so slow after upgrading?

I came from OS Snow Leopard on a fairly basic Macbook Pro 13 inch model, and upgraded to Lion.  I use Finder a lot, and something I noticed immediately was how SLOW finder is now in OS Lion.  Does anyone else seem to be having this problem?  When I use the space-bar to preview something it can take up to 10 seconds for me to load a preview, where it used to be instantaenous in Snow Leopard.  I also have problems moving around in finder, like going from Downloads to Desktop, there's a 5 second delay minimum.  What could be causing this issue?  Is there any solution?  Or am I just stuck with a slow Lion?

    Your Noodleship:
I would say your Lion Finder performance is far from typical.
A few things I would consider if this were happening to me:
    * Is the system still indexing files? (Spotlight?)
    * Is there some other RAM hog wallowing in your system?
    * Is there some other CPU hog wallowing in your system?
The first can be answered by clicking on the spotlight symbol.
The other two can be investigated via Activity Monitor.

  • After updating from SL to Lion my iMac does not start

    Hi,
after I updated from SL to Lion, my iMac did not boot correctly. It came to the apple and the turning wheel, or at the best up to the desktop and then the black screen > maschine was off. I repaired the HD, after 6-7 trials, I reached a very slow Lion environment, not satisfieying at all. I installed Lion again, no change. Now I can only use the iMac after star with shift key, i.e. protected mode.
    Any idea what to do?

Imagine calling to your Doctor and saying "I'm unwell. Please advice (sic)"? What would he say? I think he'd start by asking a for a whole lot more information, wouldn't he? So, same here.

  • Help, Lion keeps hanging

hi everyone, lately over the last week or two OSX Lion has been strating to hang anf i get the spinning wheel condtsntly, i doubt i have a virus as i checked my system with kapsrski, i am now starting to get frustrated with it, i am fully upto date with everyting,
i am using a mac book pro 2011 bought only in april, can anyone help

I'm was running a MBP early 2011 with and i7 processor, with the original 4 gigs installed. I had all of the problems everyone else is describing with laggyness and long boots and shut downs. Did everything that has been amply documented in these dicussions searching on "slow Lion." I had incremental improvements in performance, but was less than satisfied.
My problems were solved when I installed 8 gigs of memory. The only lag I have  experienced since is Mail on boot up. I seems to take an additional 30 seconds to become responsive. I typically run 6-8 desktops with 9-10 apps running and can switch between desktops and apps instantaneously. TIme to complete shutdown, 45-60 seconds. Boot up, 120 seconds to login screen and 60 seconds to all the apps up and responsive (except mail)
It is kind of wishful thinking to list minimum specs of Lion as 2 gigs of RAM. Even 4 gigs is taxing the limits of the system. With the above configuration and software deployment, I'm using about 6.5 gigs of RAM as reported by Activity Monitor.
Do yourself a favor if you like Lion and install the additional memory.

  • My Macbook pro is running slow. Should I do a clean install before installing Mountain Lion?

My Macbook Pro has been taking forever to start up, and open windows, plus I get a lot of the spinning wheel of slow death when I'm working in my design programs. I HATE messing with my systems, because something always seems to go wrong.
Also, I have an iMac too. Can I install it on both machines if it is downloaded instead of a disk? Is that allowed?

Fix your Machines BEFORE Upgrading the OS... Otherwise you will only compound your issues...
Basically... Make sure you have enough Free Hard Drive space for your Mac to Perform as expected...
Rule of thumb is about 25 GB +
This is what Apple has to say.

You can install it on any computer you own... Providing the System Requirements are met...
Install Mountain Lion on multiple Computers
Log into App Store on your other Computer(s), being sure to use the Apple ID that Originally purchased ML...

  • Lion is super slow! Should I reinstall?

    Hi,
I have a 13” MacBook Pro that has a 2.7GHz i7 processor and 4GB of RAM. I bought this June at it came pre-installed with OS X Snow Leopard. In July, I upgraded to Lion and initially, my computer just had the spinning beach ball a lot more, but a day or two later, my computer seemed like it was running as normal (I’m assuming this was due to Spotlight indexing everything).
However, of late I’ve noticed my computer is SUPER slow! I first noticed the lag in processing speed when it took five minutes to transfer 1GB to a USB flash drive. (I then transferred the files to a Windows PC and back onto the same flash drive and the entire process occurred in under a minute). It takes over two minutes to start up and anywhere between ten seconds to a minute to open a regular application (i.e. iTunes, iPhoto, Firefox, etc). And my laptop heats up a lot faster these days too!
I’ve looked around the discussion forum and tried all the suggested solutions i.e. resetting the PRAM and the SMC, verifying and repairing the disk/permissions (including the one where you have to go through the recovery partition). But nothing has helped. If anything, it's getting worse! Every time I open disk utility now it says it’ll take 4 hours to verify the disk permissions! AHHH. And it’s not like my laptop is filled with useless files, either; my hard drive capacity is 500GB and it still has 372.7GB available. Oh, and I don’t have a virus either because I’ve run the Sophos anti-virus scan three times.
Normally, I’d have taken my laptop to the Apple Store and asked them to figure it out, but I’m currently in the Philippines and they only have Apple Resellers and fake Apple Stores here. I realise it sounds ridiculous but I’m deathly afraid they are either going to kill my MBP altogether or steal my parts.
I was wondering should I completely re-install Lion? If so, how exactly would I go about doing that? I do have a Time Machine back-up of everything on my 1TB external drive, but I don’t have any back-ups prior to getting Lion because I purchased my external later. Also, if I were to re-install Lion and restore from my Time Machine back-up would all my applications still work? I have Microsoft Office 201, Adobe Pro, Photoshop, etc. and if they get uninstalled, I don’t have any of my installation CDs here!
I’d appreciate any help! If you have any ideas, comments, suggestions, anything – shoot me a response. Thank you!

Try to find out what is causing the loss of performance by starting the "Activity Monitor" (from Applications -> Utilities) and sort the processes according to real memory usage or CPU time by clicking at the column headers.
Also have a look at the free Disk space.
According to Apple the minimum hardware requirements for Lion are 2GB of RAM, but I found that not to be sufficient with the Applications I like to be running at the same time. For my workflow I needed 4 GB RAM when on SL, and with Lion I needed 8GB of RAM. The Activity monitor will tell you if you need to upgrade your RAM.
The second bottleneck with Lion is free disk space. Lion will run much more smoothly if you keep a least 10% (and a minimum of 20 GB) of your disk free.
If you find that you do need more RAM, but don't want to upgrade right now, look at the "Activity monitor" to find out which of your processes are fighting for memory and try to avoid running those together at the same time. I found that quite often Safari was eating the available memory and quitting Safari when I did not really need it did help a lot.

    Léonie
P.S. There are quite a few threads in this forum discussing this. Search for "Lion slow"

  • Slow Internet after Lion Install

Lion installation was successful on a Mac Mini.  The only problem I have is a slower internet connection.
I am getting about 2 to 3 Mbps for download when it should be about 10 -12 Mbps.  On another Mac stil running on Snow Leopard I'm getting an excellent download speed.  I cannot see how this could relate to the Lion install, but after dealing with the modem, router and checking that other Macs have good internet access, I turned to this forum.
I am using a Cisco Valet plus router.  Lion was installed on a Mac Mini. 802.11g  The RSSI value is -70. Transmit rate is between 12 and 18.
    Any ideas?

    From the menu bar, select
     ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Network ▹ Advanced... ▹ DNS
Under DNS Servers you should have one or more numerical addresses, such as “192.168.1.1” or “10.0.0.1”. What are those addresses?

  • HT1338 I updated my MacBook Pro with Mountain Lion and now it is starting slow and opening with some of the programs. How can I fix the problem?

I updated my MacBook Pro with Mountain Lion and now it is slow in starting up and loads a number of probrams. How can I fix the problem?

Have you tried starting in Safe Mode and see if the slowness still occurs?
    Restart holding the "shift" key.
(Expect it to take longer to start this way because it runs a directory check first.)
If this works look in System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login items and delete any third party login items (-), you can always add them back with the (+). Also look in /Library/Startup Items. Nothing is put in that folder by default, so anything in there is yours.
    Reboot normally and test.
