Slow listing of network shares

Hi all,
after clicking on a computer on a computer (mac or windows), the list with shares takes about 8 seconds to appear. on another macbook the shares are shown directly after the click. any solutions?
greetings
soCram

Hi, I am from Germany too. Experienced same problem as you did. Don't know if the thing I did fixed the problem but it seems that this is the case.
Do following:
Open your network preferences, push the button with says "more options" ("weitere optionen"). Select "Ethernet" in the Options (the last option category) and change MTU Size to manual and to the value of 1492. Im my case the speed was as with mac os x 10.4.x after this modification.
Hope this helps

  • Really slow directory listing on network shares

    Customer of mine recently purchased 2 brand new iMacs and 1 MacMini (NOT running the server OS). They also have an older iMac, running 10.6.8, on site.
    Using the MacMini as network storage. Setup a few users and a few network shares. The MacMini is not used by any one.
    Issue seems to be that when the iMacs browse to the shares it takes a really long time for the file listing to come up.
    So here's the process from any of the iMacs:
    Connect to the MacMini (afp://server)
    Click on a shared folder
    Wait 10-15 seconds for the files to show up.
    Some of the folder may have like 2 dozen small word files in it, so I can't believe it's an overabundance of files causing the issue.
    Once the folder has all it's files listed everything is normal speed. They can even copy the files at normal speed, it's just the initially populating the folder, if you will.
    Slightly stumped as they use to use an ancient, underpowered, Vista machine to for the network storage and didn't report this issue.
    Any thoughts would be appreciated.

    This issue can be caused by a slow or incompatble DNS server on the network, especially a Windows DNS server. If the sharing clients are configured (in the Network preference pane) to query a local DNS server, change the address of the primary DNS server to something outside the network, such as the ISP's DNS. Test.

  • Very Slow to save Office 2013 files (Excel/Word) to a network share

    I have an issue with a customer's system whereby they experience problems with saving either a Word or Excel file to another workstation on the network.
    The network share is located on a Windows7 Pro x64 machine. The problem can be seen on a machine that's running Windows 8.1 Pro X64 along with Office 2013. When the user attempts to save the document back to the network share, there's
    a very long delay (sometime around a minute) before the save completes.
    I've tried turning off indexing of off-line files (via indexing options) and also declaring the network location as a trusted location (via the Trust Centre settings from within Excel & Word).
    If I simulate the same, but with a local file (eg loaded/saved to the Desktop) then there's no delay, so I conclude that it's something related to the process of saving data to the network share.
    The normal copy speed across the network, and between these 2 machines, is very fast. It's only when running Word/Excel that  the problem manifests itself.
    Any pointers would be gratefully received!
    Martin

    Hi Martin,
    Please first try to disable your antivirus software and check the issue again.
    This issue may also occur if you use the Encrypting File System (EFS) to secure the Temporary Internet Files folder. If this is the situation, please refer to the following article and try to fix the issue:

    In addition, please check if the information in the following link applies:

  • Domain user network share browsing slow, but domain admin is fast

    I've seen quite a few threads about slow network share browsing in Windows 7, and I've tried every fix to no avail.  I did notice something that has not been mentioned in any threads that I've seen though, and that's the behavior is different when using
    a user account with administrative privileges.
    Environment: SBS2011, domain, 14 Windows 7 PC's that all exhibit the same behavior
    As an account in the domain users group, browse to a network share with approx. 400 items to display, and it takes 4-5 seconds for explorer to show them.  Same delay exists when creating new folders in this folder.  Displaying this folder in any
    way reproduces this delay, whether navigating up or down the file system, or by going straight to the share's UNC path.
    Folders with fewer items have less of a delay, the effect seems proportional.
    As an account in the domain admins group, navigation is lickety split.  Tested with two different administrative accounts.  Tested on multiple PC's.  Also took a user account that exhibited the issue, added them as a member of domain admins,
    and this resolved the issue for that user account.
    Any ideas?

    Did you ever find a solution to this issue?
    We are running into a similar issue.  We have a few specific Domain Users who are reporting difficulty navigating or searching network shares.  Searching a small folder of files is taking 30+ seconds.  All of our domain admins can search the
    same folder instantly.  If we add this Domain User into Domain Admins his searching is instant, when we demote him back down to Domain user its slow again.  The Domain User is having the same issue no matter what computer he uses.  Us Domain
    Admins can log into the same computer and it comes up with search results instantly, log out and log back in as the Domain User and suddenly its slow again.
    Any help would be appreciated.

  • Office files slow when opening from a Network Share

    Hi!
    So, we have a client who moved from having regular Office installations to Office 365 for Mid Size business and reinstalled the Office that comes along with Office 365. Ever since we did
    that, there is a delay in opening any office files from a network share. Opening up a Word or Excel document takes up a lot longer than it did before. We have another client with the exact same issue who have Office 2013, so I think its mostly something to
    do with office 2013. This problem has been going on for a month, and I have tried everything I can. I have gone through most posts on technet and the internets. Tried disabling AV, Office File Validation, added the network share to trusted locations, removed
    add-ins. Nothing works! All other files opens up quickly, pdf, jpg. We can open larger jpg or pdf files faster than smaller office documents. This is a significant problem with our clients as they work in recruitment and open up resumes all day from the network
    share and it takes forever to open.
    Any advice or help is appreciated!
    Thanks!
    Shaneez

    Hello,

  • My iCloud drive is slow to save and share Pages documents with my IOS devices

    My iCloud drive is slow to update and share my Pages documents with IOS devices.  When I save a document to the iCloud drive I get a Cloud symbol in the Name line (behind the document name) and a bar in the Size column (like it's trying to save the document but is unable to do so).  When I see the document in the document list on the Pages app on my IOS device it has a gray line along the bottom and I can't open the document in the Pages app.

    Same for me, too - for the last few days.  Reminiscent of a few weeks back when iTunes and Apple TV ground to a crawl.  Of course Apple system status is green.  After several days it just started working again.  At least with Mac iCloud I have tried to use multiple networks/carriers so now there's no blaming AT&T on this one.
    Called support and got the extended wait time message.  Gave up.
    Love my devices and software, but Apple really has poor cloud support.  They won't even own up to the issues.  If my employer didn't block dropbox, absolutely done deal I'd be off iCloud back with Dropbox.

  • Multiple Users Mounting the Same Network Share?

    Hello, first time posting...
    I'll cut right to my main question: Is it possible, on OS X v10.3.9, for multiple users to simultaneously connect to the same network share?
    Here in my office, we have a single Mac that is used by multiple people throughout the day. It has two accounts on it, 'Communications' and 'Studio'. 'Communications' is an Admin account that is used by a co-worker who spends the most time on the Mac. He created the no-limitation 'Studio' account for the rest of us to use.
    There is a certain Windows network share that we both frequently use. We've found that if one user connects to the share first, the other user will not have access to it; using 'Go -> Connect to Server' will result in the share being greyed out in the list, and the share will not show up in the Finder.
    However, there is one way around it. If Studio connects to the share first and then Communications (the admin account) attempts to make a connection of it's own *through a shortcut on the dock*, then a 'clone' of the share will be created on Comm's desktop, with a "-1" after the name (though it might be some other number).
    This may sound like I've answered my own question, but what I'm looking for is a way for the non-Admin account to access the share after the Admin account already has (so that we don't have to log-in and disconnect Communications everytime Studio needs to manage files on the share).
    We have Thursby Software's DAVE installed on the Mac, but I'm not sure how it fits into all this.
    Any thoughts, suggestions or advice?
    Thanks.

    Bizarre. It turned out I could merge them, but only in to the mapped drive - L: - and only by explicitly clicking on the drive icon - if I typed L:\series in to dialog box it converted it back to \\nas\share\series... Not helpful.

  • Data Federator: Access Text file from secured Network Share or Sharepoint?

    Hi,
    I am using BusinessObjects Data Federator Designer XI 3.0 Service Pack 2 - 12.2.2.0 (Build 1002172322) and I'm new to DF.
    I am trying to use the Text File Datasource type to connect to a file on a secured Network Share and from a Sharepoint 2010 document repository. Is this possible?
    I am currently able to use the Text File datasource to read a file from a public network share (
    share\public\folderpath\file) or on the local federator machine using the "Local File" connection but cannot put in a username/password for accessing a secure network share. Is there a built in DF username/password that should be granted access to the share?
    Neiher the FTP File System or SMB Share seemed like it would work here either.
    For the Sharepoint connection, I know that I can make a webservice on a list and connect DF to the webservice, but I want to just connect to the document repository. I was unable to get this to work even with Sharepoint repositories using WebDav since the Local File method did not accept the url string (http://mysite.<org>.com/personal/<user>/Shared Documents). Is there any way to do this without having to change the way the file is exposed on the Sharepoint side?
    How is this normally handled? Put the files on a unsecured network share or on the DF server? Import the files into a DB and just use DB connections?
    Finally, is there a way to import XLS/XLSX files in DF or only CSV files?  I saw DI has an Excel Adaptor but didn't see anything for DF and when I tried it either could not retrieve the XML schema or reading the file's data failed.
    Thanks alot for the help.
    Kerby

    Bump, any help here with Data Federator usage?  Sharepoint, XLS files, or using secured network share?

  • Crashes when running applications from network share - "Windows cannot access the file for one of the following reasons"

    Hi,
    starting a couple of weeks ago, we get the following error(s) when running applications from a network share. We don't know what causes this, we are not aware of any major changes in our network infrastructure or client/Server configuration. We did upgrade
    a lot of machines to Windows 8, but the issue also occurs on older Win7 computers.
    We figured out a workaround though: The applications run fine when launching from a FQDN share (like
    \\share.domain.Company.com) and only cause problems when running from
    \\share directly. They have worked fine for years without FQDN though.
    Any ideas?

    User Action
    1. Open the file again. This situation might be a temporary problem that corrects itself when the program runs again.
    2. If the file still cannot be accessed and
    - It is on the network, your network administrator should verify that there is not a problem with the network and that the server can be contacted.
    - It is on a removable disk, for example, a floppy disk or CD-ROM, verify that the disk is fully inserted into the computer.
    3. Check and repair the file system by running CHKDSK. To run CHKDSK, click Start, click Run, type CMD, and then click OK. At the command prompt, type CHKDSK /F, and then press ENTER.
    4. If the problem persists, restore the file from a backup copy.
    5. Determine whether other files on the same disk can be opened. If not, the disk might be damaged. If it is a hard disk, contact your administrator or computer hardware vendor for further assistance.

    Hi,
    >>The applications run fine when launching from a FQDN share
    It sounds like a DNS suffix issue. When this issue occurs, please try to ping share on the client, then check if the corresponding IP address is correct. If the IP address is wrong, please adjust your settings of DNS to make sure that the client can resolve
    the share correctly.
    If it's very hard to change the settings of the DNS for some reason, as a work around, we can add the entry into the clients' hosts file.
    Best Regards.

  • How can I stop an network share from auto mounting?

    I have a recent 13" MBPr and I installed Steam.  For kicks, I told it to save the library on my 10.8 mac mini server.  This worked well.  It worked so well, I started up Parallels and did the same thing for my steam library on my boot camp partition. I closed Parallels and Steam then put my laptop to sleep.  I was away from my home network and repeatedly received messages about not being able to access my server in a standard Finder pop-up.  No big deal, I opened Steam to try and remove the library from my list.  It was no longer listed.
    Upon arriving home I opened steam and still could not find my share in the list.  I removed Steam and all it's support files.  Still on every boot I get the finder error about not being able to connect to my server.  When I boot up my parallels boot camp VM I get the same Finder error.  It pops up several (I never bothered to count) before it stops after I keep closing the pop-up.
    I've looked at /etc/auto_master and /etc/auto_home, my login items, and I cannot find the process that keeps trying to mount the network share.  When I am at my home and reboot my mac or boot parallels I do not receive the error.  But I also do not see the mounted share on my desktop.  I do see it when I perform the ls command on /Volumes.  When I try and cd into it I get a Permission Denied error.  Root/Wheel seems to own the mounted share.  When I sudo the folder I see all the files stored on that volume.
    Does anyone know how I can stop this from happening without resorting to creating a new user?  I just got this one the way I like it (before I screwed it up with steam!)
    Thanks for reading my short novel.

    did the restore through itunes but to no avail.
    Then you must have restored and installed your backup when requested.  To remove those emails, you have to restore as new, i.e. without your backup, as roaminggnome suggested.

  • How Do I find out what app is auto-mounting a network share and stop it?

    I have a new laptop, the 13" rMBP.  I installed Steam and wanted to use the network share on my server to store the game files.  Everything went OK.  I closed Steam, disconnected the share and shutdown my laptop.  When I opened my laptop later on at work, it started to try and mount the network share.It keeps on going it.  I removed the Steam app and all files related to Steam that I could find.  I've looked at fstab, auto_home, auto_master and a large list of other files and directories and I *still* cannot find the offending file that's auto-mounting the share.  It's really frustrating.
    The share auto-mounts when I am home but not on the desktop or in finder.  I find it by looking at /Volumes/ in terminal.  If I mount the share manually under /Volumes/ it shows as Games-1 and mounts on the desktop under Games.
    Does anyone have any ideas on where I should be looking to find the offending process/file/daemon?
    Thank you!
    Trevor

    thanks for the reply but are you sure about this? What difference would it make? Why 5 apps?
    Even if it does work, which I doubt, at some point, I will have to resync ALL my apps again and surely the same thing will happen again, and I will be none the wiser. I still won't know which app it is. There must be a way of finding this out.
    Any ideas?
    What is really freaking me out is how it is connecting to my carrier (who is charging me) with Cellular data switched off.......?
    Thanks again.

  • Problems with VPN and Windows Network Shares

    I'm in the middle of a Windows domain migration and I've setup the two way trust for the domains.
    Cisco VPN clients authenticate against the old domain.
    A user with an account in the new domain and whos laptop is joined to the new domain (also has a user account in the old domain) can connect to the VPN but is asked for Windows authentication when they connect to a network share in either domain.
    Users whos account/laptop are in the old domain don't have this issue.
    Any ideas or suggestions?

    This may happens because broadcasts do not go through an IPSec tunnel.
    Browsing Network Neighborhood is a function of the Microsoft browsing service. Any problems are usually because the PC or master browsers do not function properly. Network Neighborhood is officially not supported. However, it works if configured correctly. Browsing Network Neighborhood works by obtaining the browse list from either a master or backup browser. This list is obtained locally on your LAN by using NetBIOS Broadcasts to locate domain browsers.
    Inorder to resove this :
    Make sure you have NetBIOS over TCP enabled on the adapter that you use to connect to the domain.

  • Windows 8.1 Network Share 0x8007003b Error Copying Files

    Hi All,
    I'm having an issue when copying files from a Windows network share. If the file is above 5MB it will start copying and then after a minute or two I will get an error such as:
    Interrupted Action
    An unexpected error is keeping you from copying the file. If you continue to receive this error, you can use the error code to search for help with this problem.
    Error 0x8007003B: An unexpected network error occurred.
    The network share is in a different office and is accessible over a point-to-point VPN, so the connection is not that fast.
    But before everyone tells me to start diagnosing the router and or VPN please take note of the following:
    My colleague who is running Windows 7 can copy files from the network share fine
    If I run a Windows 7 VM on my Windows 8.1 laptop I can copy the files across fine
    I also know it isn't an issue with this particular file share. I set up a little lab, where I had one VM which had a shared folder and 2 other client VMs one running Windows 7 and one running Windows 8.1. I limited the bandwidth to the two client
    VMs to a similar speed we see across our VPN. The result was that the Windows 8.1 failed with the same error above, whereas the Windows 7 copied fine.
    There is also a noticeable difference visually when copying using Windows 8.1 and Windows 7:
    Windows 7 - The progress bar progresses smoothly giving the current speed and estimated time remaining
    Windows 8.1 - The progress bar progresses in a jumpy fashion. E.g. it shows no progress, then after a minute it jumps and shows 16% progress, then shows no further progress, then jumps by another 18%. There is no estimated time remaining.
    I ran Wireshark to investigate what was going on at the network layer. I see the following behaviour:
    Windows 8.1 - The file is copying fine then all of a sudden there are a lot of TCP dupack packets. After which the Windows 8.1 client sends a RST packet and then the error pops up.
    Windows 7 - The file is copying fine then you also see a load of TCP dupack packets, however no error is displayed and it continues copying fine.
    I'd appreciate any help with this I'm hoping there are some settings I can change to make Windows 8.1 behave more like Windows 7!

    To answer your original questions.
    Do you mean the file below 5 MB will copy fine ?
    5MB is not a hard limit. If the file is small enough it will copy before it errors out. A file of around 5MB or so fails with an error.
    Have you tried to copy the files from another Windows 8.1 machine (This will help us to verify whether the issue is casued by the specific machine)?Have you tried to copy another file from the network share to have a check ?
    Yes I've tried from another Windows 8.1 machine and have the same behaviour. It is the same with different files from the network share. And the same with different network shares.
    I am seeing nothing in the event viewer when the error occurs. I do not believe this to be a VPN issue because I can recreate this situation perfectly. As I mentioned in the original post- I
    also know it isn't an issue with this particular file share. I set up a little lab, where I had one VM which had a shared folder and 2 other client VMs one running Windows 7 and one running Windows 8.1. I limited the bandwidth to the two client VMs to a similar
    speed we see across our VPN. The result was that the Windows 8.1 failed with the same error above, whereas the Windows 7 copied fine.
    Basically, I had virtual machines all on the same local network. One virtual machine was hosting a file share with files on it. I created one Windows 7 VM and one Windows 8.1 VM. Using VMWare Workstation you can limit the network bandwidth to the VMs. When
    I did not limit the network bandwidth I could copy all files of all sizes fine. However, when I limit the network bandwidth to a speed of around 30-50KBps, the Windows 8.1 VM fails to copy files with the same error. But Windows 7 VM copies the files fine.
    The point of limiting the bandwidth in this way is to create a similar scenario to that I see when connecting over the VPN.
    This all leads me to believe there is some sort of issue with copying files from fileshares over slow connections using Windows 8.1.
    Cheers,
    Zak

  • Not able to access network shares on a Win 7 Pro SP1 machine on certain machines

    I have computer "FileShare"
    It runs Windows 7 Pro SP1 and it's current on updates.  Password Protected Sharing is OFF, Advanced Sharing is set to "Everyone read/write"
    I can access it from other PC's in the same workgroup and no passwords are prompted for.  The other PC's run XP or Win 7, and they all work fine.
    However I have a Laptop running XP Pro SP3 current on updates, and a Win 7 Pro SP1 TestBox also current on updates.
    The Laptop and TestBox require passwords to log into the network shares.  I've tried rebooting all of them, adding "guest" to the user list for shares on computer "FileShare", and have even set a blank password to Guest on "FileShare".
    Tried Turning Password Protection off and on again. Rebooting again. The Laptop and Textbox still need passwords, while numerous other XP desktops can access the network shares just fine.
    Any ideas on what to do?

    Hi,
    This behavior may occur if all the following conditions are true:
    a. NetBIOS over TCP/IP is not turned on (enabled) on one or more computers in the workgroup.
    b. The Computer Browser service is not started or is turned off on one or more computers in the workgroup.
    This behavior may also occur if File and Print Sharing for Microsoft Networks is not installed or is blocked by Windows Firewall.
    Step 1: Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP
    Control Panel > Network and Internet Connections > Network Connections > Right-click Local Area Connection, and then click Properties > Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then click Properties.
    > click Advanced > Click the WINS tab > Under NetBIOS setting, click Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP, and then click OK two times > Click Close to close the Local Area Connection Properties dialog box.
    > Close the Network Connections window.
    Step 2: Start the Computer Browser service
    Start > right-click My Computer > Manage > Double-click Services and Applications > Double-click Services > On the right side, right-click Computer Browser, and then click Start.
    > Close the Computer Management window.
    Step 3: Temporary disable firewall and antivirus programs for test.
    It also can be caused by software conflicts. If the issue disappears in the Clean Boot environment, we can use a 50/50 approach to quickly narrow down which entry is causing the issue.
    How to perform a clean boot to troubleshoot a problem in Windows 8, Windows 7, or Windows Vista
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135
    Since the issue does not occur in all computers, you should also compare the different settings between them to narrow down the cause.
    Hope it helps.

  • Scipt to prompt and authenticate users to AD and then map 2 next available drive letters to 2 network shares

    Hi,
    So I have been trying to write some code that will
    prompt users to authenticate to AD and use that authentication to map the next 2 available drive letter to two network shares.
    I have adopted using the HAT format as this provides me with the ability to prompt for a username and password and authenitcate to AD.
    <script language="vbscript">
    Function setSize()
    window.resizeTo 350,300
    Window.moveTo (screen.width-240)/2, (screen.height-600)/2
    End Function
    Function cmdSubmit_OnClick()
    Dim strUser 'User Name variable
    Dim strPW 'User Password variable
    if auth.username.value = "" Then
    msgbox ("ERROR: No User account information provided. Please Try Again!")
    cmdSubmit_OnClick = False
    Elseif auth.password.value = "" Then
    msgbox ("ERROR: No User account information provided. Please Try Again!")
    cmdSubmit_OnClick= False
    Else
    strUser = auth.username.value
    strPW = auth.password.value
    Authenticate strUser, strPW
    End If
    End Function
    Public Sub Authenticate (Byref strUser, Byref strPW)
    On Error Resume Next
    Const ADS_SECURE_AUTHENTICATION = &H1
    Const ADS_SERVER_BIND = &H200
    Dim strPath 'LDAP path where the Users accounts are listed
    Dim LDAP 'Directory Service Object reference variable
    Dim strAuth 'Parses the User Name and Password through the DSObject
    strPath = "LDAP://fanzldap.au.fjanz.com/rootDSE"
    Set LDAP = GetObject("LDAP://company/rootDSE")
    Set strAuth = LDAP.OpenDSObject(strPath, strUser, strPW, ADS_SECURE_AUTHENTICATION Or ADS_SERVER_BIND)
    If Err.number <> 0 Then
    intTemp = msgbox(strUser & " could not be authenticated", vbYES)
    if intTemp = vbYes Then
    'window.location.reload()
    End If
    Else
    For Each obj in strAuth
    If obj.Class = "user" Then
    If obj.Get("samAccountName") = strUser Then
    msgbox ("Success! " & strUser & " has been authenticated with Active Directory")
    window.close()
    Set wShell = CreateObject("Wscript.shell")
    wShell.run "Firstletterali.vbs"
    End If
    End If
    Next
    End If
    End Sub
    </script>
    <head>
    <body style="background-color:#B0C4DE">

    <input type="button" value="Exit" onclick="self.close()">

    </body>
    </html>
    using the above I can succefully authenticate users but I cant work out how to then use that authenticattion to map the next to available drive letters to a network source.
    The code I have for that is
    Option Explicit
    Dim strDriveLetter, strRemotePath, strRemotePath1, strDriveLetter1
    Dim objNetwork, objShell
    Dim CheckDrive, DriveExists, intDrive
    Dim strAlpha, strExtract, intAlpha, intCount
    ' The section sets the variables
    strRemotePath = "\\mel\groups\Team\general"
    strRemotePath1 = "\\mel\groups\Team\specific"
    strDriveLetter = "B:"
    strDriveLetter1 = "H:"
    strAlpha = "BHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ"
    intAlpha = 0
    intCount = 0
    err.number= vbEmpty
    ' This sections creates two objects:
    ' objShell and objNetwork and then counts the drives
    Set objShell = CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
    Set objNetwork = CreateObject("WScript.Network")
    Set CheckDrive = objNetwork.EnumNetworkDrives()
    ' This section operates the For ... Next loop
    ' See how it compares the enumerated drive letters
    ' With strDriveLetter
    On Error Resume Next
    DriveExists = False
    ' Sets the Outer loop to check for 24 letters in strAlpha
    For intCount = 1 To 24
    DriveExists = False
    ' CheckDrive compares each Enumerated network drive
    ' with the proposed drive letter held by strDriveLetter
    For intDrive = 0 To CheckDrive.Count - 1 Step 2
    If CheckDrive.Item(intDrive) = strDriveLetter _
    Then DriveExists = True
    Next
    intAlpha = intAlpha + 1
    ' Logic section if strDriveLetter does not = DriveExist
    ' Then go ahead and map the drive
    'Wscript.Echo strDriveLetter & " exists: " & DriveExists
    If DriveExists = False Then objNetwork.MapNetworkDrive _
    strDriveLetter, strRemotePath
    call ShowExplorer ' Extra code to take you to the mapped drive
    ' Appends a colon to drive letter. 1 means number of letters
    strDriveLetter = Mid(strAlpha, intAlpha,1) & ":"
    ' If the DriveExists, then it is necessary to
    ' reset the variable from true --> false for next test loop
    If DriveExists = True Then DriveExists = False
    Next
    WScript.Echo "Out of drive letters. Last letter " & strDriveLetter
    WScript.Quit(1)
    'Sub ShowExplorer()
    'If DriveExists = False Then Wscript.Echo strDriveLetter & " Has been mapped for archiving"
    'If DriveExists = False Then objShell.run _
    '("Explorer" & " " & strDriveLetter & "\" )
    'If DriveExists = False Then WScript.Quit(0)
    'End Sub
    On Error Resume Next
    DriveExists = False
    ' Sets the Outer loop to check for 24 letters in strAlpha
    For intCount = 1 To 24
    DriveExists = False
    ' CheckDrive compares each Enumerated network drive
    ' with the proposed drive letter held by strDriveLetter1
    For intDrive = 0 To CheckDrive.Count - 1 Step 2
    If CheckDrive.Item(intDrive) = strDriveLetter1 _
    Then DriveExists = True
    Next
    intAlpha = intAlpha + 1
    ' Logic section if strDriveLetter1 does not = DriveExist
    ' Then go ahead and map the drive
    'Wscript.Echo strDriveLetter1 & " exists: " & DriveExists
    If DriveExists = False Then objNetwork.MapNetworkDrive _
    strDriveLetter1, strRemotePath1
    call ShowExplorer ' Extra code to take you to the mapped drive
    ' Appends a colon to drive letter. 1 means number of letters
    strDriveLetter1 = Mid(strAlpha, intAlpha,1) & ":"
    ' If the DriveExists, then it is necessary to
    ' reset the variable from true --> false for next test loop
    If DriveExists = True Then DriveExists = False
    Next
    WScript.Echo "Out of drive letters. Last letter " & strDriveLetter1
    WScript.Quit(1)
    Sub ShowExplorer()
    If DriveExists = False Then Wscript.Echo strDriveLetter & " Has been mapped for archiving"
    If DriveExists = False Then objShell.run _
    ("Explorer" & " " & strDriveLetter & "\" )
    If DriveExists = False Then WScript.Quit(0)
    End Sub
    Now the above script will find the next availabe letter and map one location to it...I still havent worked out to create another loop for it to do it again. It obviously also requires that you already be authenticated to map to that location.
    I looking for some help on how to marry these to scripts together.
    Thanks
    Ali

    Hi Ali
    Here is some code that will enumerate two free adjacent drive letters. It starts searching from "C" all the way to "Z" for two drives letters that are adjacent and returns the results in an array then echos the results. You can easily adapt this code to
    map your network drives to each drive letter. Hope that helps
    Cheers Matt :)
