Slow loading of images

When I go to a web page with lots of images (basically, all of them) Safari loads the text portion of the page promptly, then hangs up and waits and after an excruciatingly long time will give up and load question marks for all the images. If I reload the page the images immediately load properly. Sometimes I'll stop the loading process while it's hung up, and reload the page, and again all images appear fairly promptly. Anyone else having this problem? It helps to empty the cache and clear the history, but I can't do that every time I load an image heavy page. Any ideas?
iMac   Mac OS X (10.3.4)

Hi Elaine,
Welcome to Apple Discussions
Two areas to check:
Safari Preferences>Appearance panel. Make sure the "image load" selection is checked. If not, do so, then try a page load again.
Otherwise, go to your System Preferences>Network>TCP panel. There, enter 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2 (separate lines) in the DNS servers box. Then select "apply".
Restart Safari and try the page load again.
I notice your tag says 10.3.4. Is this correct? Latest version of OS X Panther is 10.3.9, which would give you an upgraded version of Safari (v 1.3.2). You can upgrade via Software Update in System Preferences. If you do this, do not use the computer during the upgrade process. After finished, make sure you "repair permissions" using Disk Utility>First Aid Panel ini your Utilities folder.

  • Slideshow page appears to load all images at once making it very slow. Is it possible to force it to load just the required items for the immediate page / slide

    Hi Everyone
    First post and a Muse / Web Noob.
    Im building my personal website with muse ( CC and now CC 2014 ) , its quite simple with slideshows embedded inside each other and is just 4 pages in total.
    My two slideshow pages appears to load all images at once making it very slow ( plus 20 secs on my system ). Is it possible to force it to load just the required items for the immediate page / slide. It would be so much faster and would work much better in this particular situation.
    Ive built all the images and icons at the correct size so optimisation shouldn't be an issue. The whole site is only about 42mb.

    Many thanks

    Oh well the problem seems to have fixed itself. It seems it was either a Java or Tumblr problem because the same thing happened when I installed Chrome. It is a lot more stable now and no more crashes yay.

  • Slow loading images disabling adjustments Aperture 2

    I am running Aperture 2.1.4 on an intel mac having just moved over from a powerpc. Its a big leap in many ways.
    In aperture all the images load so much faster than before except the adjustments are disabled and the heading at the top of the Adjustments sidebar is that the "Image Loading"
    The image is actually visible in the main window so its just the image levels box which is blank along with the above message.
    Any inputs? Is there anyone out there still using Aperture 2.1.4?
    Many thanks
    Anthony

    Is aperture 3 a new application rather than an upgrade to 2? I'm wondering how smooth a transition the process will be.
    Aperture 3 is an update from Aperture 2 which means it is a separate application then needs to be purchased through the Mac App Store. Upgrades (going from version 2.4 to 2.5 for example) are free but updates (going from version 2 to version 3) need to be paid for.
    Again good luck and take your time, document everything you do. Also have backups especially of things like the Aperture librssry, things that cannot be replaced.

    This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
    The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
    Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
    While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
    Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
    After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
    *Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
    The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
    Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot insafe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
    Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
    The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
    Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
    After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • Flash newbie questions about slow loading site

    Hi all. I am new to Flash and web-site building in general and I have been learning while doing. Its fun, but frustrating. I really need some help, hope someone out there with Flash experience can give me some advice.
    My problem is this: I built a Flash website, but it is painfully slow to load up (3-5 minutes via cable modem) when I visit the site (via Firefox, etc). Once it does load up, everything is fine with navigation. I'm having a hard time figuring out why its taking so long to load up on the web because, basically, I don't know how to trouble shoot. Hope you guys can help!
    Details: the site is just a portfolio site with pictures and a few motion-things, no complicated animations. The swf file is about 9MB. I do have a flash preloader, but it doesn't show up until after the 3-5 minute "load-up" time. When I do the testing via Flash, its Ok and doesn't show the lag. But once I upload the website files and try to visit my website, the load time problem occurs.
    My thoughts:
    - do I have to purge my Flash file/library of unused images before creating my swf file?
    - Is there a problem with my html code in my index file?
    - because it is a portfolio site, I've got about 90 images on it, each image about 300-400K.  Is this too big, or about right?
    Please help! Sorry for the long email, just desperate for help. Thanks in advance for any advise!!!! Just in case, here is the html code:

    Yeah I'm with Ned on this one. Dynamically loading your images is the way to go. The fact that you are new to Flash, try this tutorial (http://www.entheosweb.com/Flash/loading_external_images.asp). As you move along in learning Flash, look for tutorials on actionscript arrays and loading images dynamically. Arrays allow you to call each images from a folder outside your fla. That way your site moves right along without much loading time.
    Hope I was of help,

  • Slow loading website

    So I just finished my website but it loads piece by piece and
    a slower than I would have liked. is there anyway to improve this
    that would not require me redoing it all over? The site is here:
    http://www.martinpaulphotography.com/index.html
    thanks,
    Martin.

    A couple of things:
    (1) If the music is in your flash file, you can delay it a
    few frames. Too much in the first frame slows loading. You might
    consider adding a volume X button for those that want to browse w/
    sound.
    (2) Optimize the images of your page. There are a lot of them
    which is one of the reasons for the slow load.
    Is that your musical composition? If not, you should post
    your use with permission on the front page to oblige the author's
    permission. If you don't have that....lose the music. Be careful
    here, especially with professional sites.

  • Safari is extremely slow loading web pages, i have to latest software, no updating needed

    Safari is really slow loading internet pages and uploading images. I have the latest software update. I just purchased this mac book pro within the last 3 months..just frustrating that it's already this slow so soon....Any suggestions? I called tech support and nothing they walked me through helped. He was going to reinstall everything but I wanted to wait and see if there was anything else I could possible do before considering I just got this notebook, I hate to reinstall everything. It seems like there should be a simpler solution...

    This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
    Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
    Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
    Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
    The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
    Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including your login items.
    Launch the application(s) and test. Same problem(s)?
    After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)

  • Safari won't load some images (after upgrade to Mavericks from Lion)

    Hi,
    I've noticed that since I upgraded my OS from Lion to Mavericks, Safari won't load all images on certain websites.
    I've tried loading the same pages on my daughter's MacBookPro (she upgraded from Mountain Lion to Mavericks) and everything works just fine.
    We cross checked the Safari preferences and everything is identical.
    Below are two pictures, the first one taken from my computer, the second one from my daughter's. As you can see, in the first photo the image won't display, while it's been perfectly loaded in the second photo.
    Here's the website: http://blog.alice.tv/berengario/2013/11/16/trasmissione-su-arturo-tv/
    I've tried opening the same page on Firefox, and all images are perfectly displayed.
    Could you please help me?
    Thank you for your support!
    Kind regards,
    Leo

  • How to load mutiple image

    I'm trying to create a photo manager but I can't find a way to load multiple images onto my frame. I have a thumbnail class that makes thumbnails for an image (which is a modified version of the class ImageHolder from FilthyRichClient)
    public class Thumbnails {
         private List<BufferedImage> scaledImages = new ArrayList<BufferedImage>();
    private static final int AVG_SIZE = 160;
    * Given any image, this constructor creates and stores down-scaled
    * versions of this image down to some MIN_SIZE
    public Thumbnails(File imageFile) throws IOException{
              // TODO Auto-generated constructor stub
         BufferedImage originalImage = ImageIO.read(imageFile);
    int imageW = originalImage.getWidth();
    int imageH = originalImage.getHeight();
    boolean firstScale = true;
    scaledImages.add(originalImage);
    while (imageW >= AVG_SIZE && imageH >= AVG_SIZE) {
         if(firstScale && (imageW > 320 || imageH > 320)) {
              float factor = (float) imageW / imageH;
              if(factor > 0) {
              imageW = 320;
              imageH = (int) (factor * imageW);
              else {
                   imageH = 320;
                   imageW = (int) (factor * imageH);
         else {
              imageW >>= 1;
         imageH >>= 1;
    BufferedImage scaledImage = new BufferedImage(imageW, imageH,
    originalImage.getType());
    Graphics2D g2d = scaledImage.createGraphics();
    g2d.setRenderingHint(RenderingHints.KEY_INTERPOLATION,
    RenderingHints.VALUE_INTERPOLATION_BILINEAR);
    g2d.drawImage(originalImage, 0, 0, imageW, imageH, null);
    g2d.dispose();
    scaledImages.add(scaledImage);
    * This method returns an image with the specified width. It finds
    * the pre-scaled size with the closest/larger width and scales
    * down from it, to provide a fast and high-quality scaled version
    * at the requested size.
    BufferedImage getImage(int width) {
    for (BufferedImage scaledImage : scaledImages) {
    int scaledW = scaledImage.getWidth();
    // This is the one to scale from if:
    // - the requested size is larger than this size
    // - the requested size is between this size and
    // the next size down
    // - this is the smallest (last) size
    if (scaledW < width || ((scaledW >> 1) < width) ||
    (scaledW >> 1) < (AVG_SIZE >> 1)) {
    if (scaledW != width) {
    // Create new version scaled to this width
    // Set the width at this width, scale the
    // height proportional to the image width
    float scaleFactor = (float)width / scaledW;
    int scaledH = (int)(scaledImage.getHeight() *
    scaleFactor + .5f);
    BufferedImage image = new BufferedImage(width,
    scaledH, scaledImage.getType());
    Graphics2D g2d = image.createGraphics();
    g2d.setRenderingHint(
    RenderingHints.KEY_INTERPOLATION,
    RenderingHints.VALUE_INTERPOLATION_BILINEAR);
    g2d.drawImage(scaledImage, 0, 0,
    width, scaledH, null);
    g2d.dispose();
    scaledImage = image;
    return scaledImage;
    // shouldn't get here
    return null;
    A loop will loop through a collection of files and pass them to the constructor of Thumbnails to create thumbnails and then set them as icon for JLabels that will be added to a JPanel, but it throws a java.lang.OutOfMemoryError at this line:
    BufferedImage originalImage = ImageIO.read(imageFile);
    even when there're only about 8 image files in the collection (total size 2,51MB).
    I've seen other people's software that could load hundreds of photos in a matter of seconds! How do I suppose to do that? How to load mutiple images efficiently? Please help!! Thanks a lot!

    Thanks everybody! I appreciate your help! I don't understand why but when I use a separate thread to do the job, that problem disappear. You were likely doing your image loading and thumnail creation on the Event Dispatching Thread. Among other things, this is the same thread that updates and paints your panels, frames, buttons, ect.. When a programer does something computationaly expensive on the event dispatching thread then the GUI becomes unresponsive until the computation is done.
    Ideally what you want to do is load images and create thumnails on a seperate thread and update your GUI on the event dispatching thread. I supect that while you are finally doing the first item, you might now be violating the second item.
    Whatever, the program seems to be pretty slow on start up 'cause it have to reload images everytime. I'm using Picasa and it can display those thumbnails almost instantly. I know that program is made by professionals. But I still want to know how.I took a look at this Picasa you mentioned. It's the photo manager from google right? You're right in that the thumnails display instantly when starting up. This is because Picasa is actually saving the thumnails, instead of creating them everytime the program starts up. It only creates the thumnails once (when you import a picture) and saves the thumnail data to " +*currentUser*+ /AppData/Local/Google/Picasa2/db3/" (at least on my computer --> Vista).
    Also, if your looking for speed then for some inexplicable reason java.awt.Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit().createImage(...); is faster (sometimes much faster) than ImageIO.read(...). But there comes a price in dealing with Toolkit images. A toolkit image isn't ready for anything until it has been properly 'loaded' using one of several methods. Also, when you're done and ready for the image to be garbage collected then you need to call Image.flush() or you will eventually find yourself with an out of memory error (BufferedImages don't have this problem). Lastly, Toolkit.createImage(...) can only read image files that the older versions of java supported (jpg, png, gif, bmp) .
    And, another question (or maybe I should post it in a different thread?), I can't display all thumbnails using a JPanel because it has a constant height unless I explicitly set it with setPreferredSize. Even when put in a JScrollPane, the height doesn't change so the scrollbar doesn't appear. Anyone know how to auto grow or shrink a JPanel vertically? Or I have to calculate the preferred height by myself?Are you drawing the thumnails directly on the JPanel? If so then you will indeed need to dynamically set the preferred size of the component.
    If not, then presumebly your wrapping the thumnails in something like a JLabel or JButton and adding that to the panel. If so, what is the layout manager you're using for the panel?

  • Random, excruciatingly slow load time with 7900 Elite small form factor desktops

    Hi all, I have approx 300 HP 7900 Elite small form factor machines in my environment that were deployed just over two years ago. from the time of deployment we have experienced on about 50 occasions a random, excruciatingly slow load time that take about one hour for the user to login and open their programs. there has been no rhyme or reason for it, different floors, areas of the building, etc. I searched the forum for similar probs and didn't see one like this, I hope I'm not duplicating efforts from someone else's question... One thing we have noticed is that if we re-boot while it is going through the start-up process, it seems to "make it angry" and will lengthen the overall load time. We use the 32-bit Vista Enterprise OS. This is with a "stock" build, that is to say, our standard corporate build. our security policy does not allow users to install software, by the way. Thanks so much if you can help!

    Hi,
    How is the issue going? Usually, this error can be caused by missing third-party NIC driver. To solve the issue, we can download the missing network
    driver and update the WDS boot image to include it.
    In addition to the article provided by Chris, the following blog can also be referred to as reference.

  • Applet loading of images -- network or JAR approach faster?

    hi all,
    i'm stumped. my applet used to load images over the network. (it was actually designed by someone else.) yes, the applet used to load each image file independently over the network and incurred a network hit per image file.
    to avoid the overhead of a separate network connection for each image file, i bundled all the images into the same JAR file that contains the applet. yet, the loading time for the applet is somehow slower now. i'm totally mystified.
    i put the code for loading each image into a separate thread as well. here's the thread code:
    BEGIN CODE
    public class ImageLoaderThread extends Thread {
         private Hashtable images;
         private DesignApplet applet;
         public ImageLoaderThread(DesignApplet applet, Hashtable images, String imageFile) {
              super(imageFile);
              this.images = images;
              this.applet = applet;
         public void run() {
              try {
                   System.out.println("Starting to load image ...");
                   String imageFile = getName();
                   InputStream is = applet.getClass().getResourceAsStream(imageFile);
                   int arraySize = is.available() * 2; // CH: create extra space just in case
                   System.out.println("Image Loader Thread: " + imageFile + "bytes available: " + arraySize);
                   BufferedInputStream bis = new BufferedInputStream(is);
                   byte[] byBuf = new byte[arraySize]; // a buffer large enough for our image
                   int byteRead = bis.read(byBuf, 0, arraySize);
                   Image buttonImage = Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit().createImage(byBuf);
                   images.put(imageFile, buttonImage);
              catch(Exception e) {
                   System.out.println("Exception while loading: " + getName());
                   e.printStackTrace();
    END CODE
    imageFile is the name of an image file stored in the JAR file. it's not stored on the server anywhere, so i know the image is getting created from the JAR file. despite this, the speed of image creation seems tied to the network. in other words, when i attempt to load the applet over a slow link, it takes longer to load than over a fast link.
    any ideas what i'm doing wrong? i'm seriously stumped and could use help. my goals are to minimize loading time of the applet while minimizing network hits for the server.
    thanks!
    p.s. if you want to play w/ the applet, click on the following link and click the "Customize" button: http://www.cengraving.com/s/z/Photo-plaques/PP024.jsp

    Why are you using a thread to load each image why not just load the images in the gui thread?
    Each thread you create takes a finite time to be started and stopped. This will surely have added to the load and startup time.
    There is also blocking going on since using the Java Console I can see that each thread reports in sequence:
    "Starting to load image ..."
    And then after all threads have reported they are starting they then report in squence:
    Image Loader Thread: " + imageFile + "bytes available: " + arraySize information.
    This shows that there is at least some blocking going on with the threads.
    I don't think using separate threads to do the loading is helping at all. Just load them one after another in the same thread (the thread all your threads are being started from).
    The putting of the images into the images Hashtable will also be blocking since Hashtable is synchronized.

  • Poor performance when dragging item within a list loaded with images - Flex 4

    Hi,
    I have a custom built List component that is using a TileLayout. I am using a custom itemRenderer to load images into this list from our server (in this test, 44 images rae loaded). I have enabled dragEnabled and dragMove so that I can move items around within the list. The problem comes when I start dragging an item. The dragging operation is very slow and clunky.
    When I move the mouse to drag the item, the dropIndicator does not get refreshed for a few seconds and the movement feels like my PC is lagging pretty badly. I've also noticed that during this time my CPU usage is spiking up to around 25-40%. The funny part is I can scroll the list just fine without any lag at all, but the minute I drag the application starts to lag really bad. I do have some custom dragOver code that I used to override the dragOverHandler of the list control, but the problem persists even if I take that code out. I've tried with useVirtualLayout set to both true and false and neither setting made a difference.
    Any ideas as to what could be causing the poor performance and/or how I can go abouts fixing it?
    Thanks a lot in advance!

    Ahh, good call about the Performance profiler. I'm pretty new to the profiling thing with Flex (haven't used Builder Pro before
    the Flex 4 beta) so please forgive me
    I found some interesting things running the performance profiler but I'm not sure I understand what to make of it all. I cleared the Performance Profile data when right before I loaded the images into the list. I then moved some images around and then captured the Profiling Data (If I understand Adobe correctly, this is the correct way to capture performance information for a set of actions).
    What I found is there is a [mouseEvent] item that took 3101ms with 1 "Calls" (!!!!). When I drill down into that item to see the Method Statistics, I actually see three different Callees and no callers. The sum of the time it took the Callees to execute does not even come close to adding up to the 3101 ms (about 40ms). I'm not sure what I can make of those numbers, or if they are even meaningful. Any insight into these?
    The only other items that stand out to me are [pre-render] which has 863ms (Cumulative Time) / 639ms (Self Time), [enterFrameEvent] which has 746ms / 6ms (?!), and [tincan] (what the heck is tincan?) which has times of 521ms for both Cumulative and Self.
    Can anyone offer some insight into these numbers and maybe make some more suggestions for me? I apologize for my ignorance on these numbers - as I said, I'm new to the whole Flex profiling thing.
    Many thanks in advance!
    Edit: I just did another check, this time profiling only from the start of my drag to the end of my drop, and I still see [mouseEvent] taking almost 1000ms of Cumulative Time. However, when I double click that item to see the Method Statistics, no Callers or Callees are listed. What's causing this [mouseEvent] and how come it's taking so long?

  • Choppy Slow Loading.....again

    I have been reading other peoples posts on the slow loading of sites, the choppiness and the problem with viewing on windows.
    I have made 4 or 5 sites now and most have been ok to get by, but my new one seems to load alot worse. Whats the point of having a website program to make simple web sites if you have to be a guru to get them to work properly?
    Is the optimization program the only choice? What is a good one?
    I ran my site through a checker and it said too many objects and images sizes where too big? It wanted the page less than 30k?? Most of my images are 4k 12k and sometimes 20k Only my splash page is 128k. This should be more than fine for hispeed users.
    PLease check out my site www.soundministry.ca

    Let me know any thoughts

    Your site loads OK for me.
    You could try HTML optimizer. It will optimize 50% of your files in the trial version....
    http://www.tonbrand.nl/
    You can drop your photo files into ImageWell and it will give you an indication of the download time on dial-up and allow you to reduce them.....
    http://xtralean.com/IWOverview.html
    More than half the surfers in the USA are still using dial-up!.
    A lot of people put a hundred photos or three or more movies on a page and wonder why they are slow to download.

    There have been a few reports on here where Corsair RAM seems to have caused users a lot of grief with crashes.
    The recommendation on here, mostly, is to only buy RAM from macsales.com or crucial.com as they guarantee their modules will work and offer a no quibble lifetime guarantee.
    I'd put the original RAM back in, return the Corsair chips for a refund and re-order from one of those two companies.
