I am having problems with slowness, too - ever since installing the latest Yosemite update I downloaded a few days ago.  EVERYTHING - Safari, QuickTime, MS Word for Apple, the DVD Player, everything - runs slowly and I get the "rainbow pinwheel of frustration".  It's taken me three minutes to type these few sentences.  It's really starting to frustrate me.  Here is my EtreCheck report:
    Problem description:
Since I installed the latest Yosemite update (10.10.2), EVERYTHING runs slowly.  I get the rainbow pinwheel whenever I click on anything on Safari, and have trouble typing via Safari; videos stop and start on QuickTime; MS Word for Apple runs slowly - EVERYTHING seems to be slowed down.  It took four minutes to get the above sentences typed.  Please help me escape the “rainbow pinwheel of failure”!

  • Another slow Mac after installing Mavericks

    Hi,
I've been using Mavericks for some time now, but it is painfully slow, particularly when using Adobe software and OpenOffice.
I have read a few tips here but reached my limit on what I can do to solve it. I have uninstalled previous Adobe software, Font Explorer and other bits and pieces, but I am afraid to clean up further lest I delete something important... I have run Etrecheck and fixed a few things, but there are still a few red lines there. I have posted the results below. Any tips will be appreciated!

how come my mac isnt showing my external hard drive after installing os x maverick? and how to i fix that??

How do you mean it isn't showing the external drive?  If you mean on the desktop, click Finder on the menu bar, Preferences, General and check the boxes for Show these items on the desktop - make sure hard drives is checked.
If you mean it is not showing in Finder or Disk Utility, make sure it is turned on, reboot and see if that mounts it so it shows up.

  • Slow operations after installing Mavericks

Slow operations after installing Mavericks. How can this be changed to faster operations?

    jlgapple,
whenever a new version of OS X is installed, Spotlight will spend some time reïndexing the boot disk to update its metadata on the updated files in OS X. If Spotlight has finished its reïndexing, have you ensured that all of your third-party apps, plug-ins, kernel extensions, &c. are compatible with Mavericks?

    Maps
    Photo Booth
    Apple Script Editor
Color Sync Utility (did launch but after pressing the "Profiles" button, it crashed)
    Grapher
Also struggling with streaming sites like Netflix, extremely slow launch the video (No network issues, tried on different network).
The problem isnt percistant, occasionally the programs will launch and work.
I have tried re-installing OSX. I sent the machine to apple service, where they told me my hdd was defective. So i bought a new SSD harddrive and installed Mavericks and i still have the same problem.
Does it sound like a hardware or a software problem?

    HI,
I would check System Preferences > Internet accounts and see if an item is active for Messages that should not be.
Alternatively delete the account in Messages > Preferences > Accounts.
Highlight then use the - button at the bottom of the list.
You could also use iForgot and check if the ID does in fact belong to you.
    NOTE.
An Apple Issued Apple ID (@Mac.com, @me.com and @icloud.com) can be used as the iMessages registration ID as well as a Valid AIM Screen Name.
An @me.com could have been issued any time during the MobileMe era and may not be active if it has not been "Converted" to iCloud.

My Macbook pro later than 2009 model slowed down after installing the new OS Lion
any suggestions to speed it up

First suggestion ,there have been a number of identical user questions like yours, in the Lion Community. If you want to talk to other MacBook Pro owners, try the forum they have.
    http://www.apple.com/support/macbookpro
What you do not need is some gizmo to "speed up" or clean caches etc.
Maybe you need to make more room on your hard drive, or add more RAM.
For now, hold down Command-R and run Disk Utility to check the health of your system drive (Lion Recovery Mode)

  • Letter A replaced all words in top bar and info boxes so I cannot read them. This soon after installing OS X Maverick, so I suspect this is related. Restart and Command-Control-P-R do not help.

? - Letter A has replaced letters of all words in top bar and  program boxes so I can read nothing, and therefore have no way to enter commands. This comes soon after installing OS X Mavericks, so I suspect this is related. Restarting and command-control-P-R have not helped. Can anyone suggest a cause?

    Back up all data.
Launch the Font Book application and validate all fonts. You must select the fonts in order to validate them. See the built-in help and this support article for instructions. If Font Book finds any issues, resolve them.
From the application's menu bar, select
    File ▹ Restore Standard Fonts...
You'll be prompted to confirm, and then to enter your administrator login password.
Boot in safe mode to rebuild the font caches. Boot again as usual and test.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. In that case, ask for instructions.
Also note that if you deactivate or remove any built-in fonts, for instance by using a third-party font manager, the system may become unstable.

Open System Preferences, select Startup Disk, and make sure your internal drive is selected as the startup disk. Then click restart!
This worked for me, personally with the same issue.
    Good luck!

  • MacBook overheating after installing OS X Mavericks

My MacBook overheats when running for mutliple hours. The issue started during first use after installing OS X Mavericks, and has occured every use since.

That is a normal place for the computer to get warm when there is some CPU/graphic intensive activity.
After an upgrade like this it is normal for Spotlight to re-index your disk.  This can take quite some time, depending upon your computer, and it certainly adds some heat.  Eventually this will stop. Of course, this may or may not be your problem.
If you use Activity Monitor, with "All Processes" selected in the view menu and then sort by CPU usage, do you see anything using, say, double digit % ?  (You may have to wait a few seconds for things to settle down after switching to Activity Monitor.)  Are you using an external display or anything that is graphic intensive?
